Bethesda has spent so much goodwill these last few years it's practically bankrupt in the faith department. Fallout 76, as has been laboriously documented, is a cavalcade of humiliation and laughably bad corporate decisions.
Then we have Obsidian coming along with The Outer Worlds, just after Bethesda launched an expensive - and broken - subscription service for Fallout 76. The Outer Worlds is pretty much everything 76 isn't, and more besides. Hell, it's the best Fallout game since Fallout 2, and it isn't even a Fallout game.
Basically, we don't need Bethesda anymore. It has served its purpose - barely adequately - and we have something better now.

People are getting too attached to brands. Blizzard, EA, Bethesda, BioWare... they used to be the best in the business, but times change. Success made them lazy and greedy. That is why you should always give a fair chance to underdogs, independent studios as they have the thirst for success and passion needed to produce a good game.
Unfortunately, you can thank the hyper-capitalistic, corporate-focused society we've allowed to happen. People see brands and corporations as a thing to aspire to, to put on a pedestal, practically worship like a god. In turn they think the loyalty they show, will be rewarded by their 'gods', and it never is, and it never will be. Those corporations only see us as wallets to empty, and until the mindset of enough people change to make society change, it won't ever improve for the better.
I got detached from all these brands years ago. Independent devs are and have been better for awhile now.

And Obsidian has been a Microsoft-owned studio since 2018.

With some use of brain we can stay away from pretty much most of the trash. The Outer Worlds throws that "Games are expensive to make so we'll give their loot boxes/live services a pass" argument into the trash bin.
That argument was already there with The Witcher 3 and it's gonna be made even more clear with the release of Cyberpunk 2077. A few years ago AAA was where every developer tried to be, now they are a "living, breathing" list of things to avoid.

Well since Obsidian is owned by Microsoft who have unlimited money I should hope so. It's the same with games from Sony owned or contracted developers. When you have a company that earns more in a month than all the AAA publishers combined do in a year it's easy.
And produces a game that's relatively short (for an RPG), with a relatively narrow world with limited combat. It doesn't look great graphically either. It's simply an OK game, but because it's not Fallout 76, it's somehow the best game ever according to Jim. Probably want to actually finish the game before commenting. This game isn't even large enough to be able to even attempt to justify monetization. There's nowhere you could fit it in anyway other than a few cosmetics. I think Bethesda has turned to shit, and they've been recycling since Oblivion, but that doesn't make TOW a masterpiece. New Vegas is still better overall aside from the bugs.

Dude Bethesda the publisher is completely different and seperate from Bethesda the developer. There is a huge difference between publisher and developer, even in this case where it's technically the same company. They _published_ one bad game that wasn't made by the Bethesda studio. Everything has been fine to excellent. But you are right, everything made exclusively by the Bethesda studio has been in decline for a long time and has officially gone to shit.

i have liked obsidian since kotor 2, but Alpha protocol was where they got me as a lifelong fan, for a game thats only kind of a role playing game, the way they work your choices into a continuously evolving story that actually is different, not just that you go talk to one or two exclusive factions was great. plus, they weirdly were one of the few developers to let a "martial artist" character actually have great animations.
Armored Warfare was and could have been great too..... then the publishers pulled a Bethesda and fucked it up. lol Mail.RU

TW3 Is a great step above Skyrim and most other RPGs. But it did have game breaking bugs (R O A C H) for a LONG time, the game is on version 1.31? at the moment and the first couple of weeks/months were spicy.

Wow, I never actually connected these dots. It's true, horse armor was the first "jUsT cOsMeTIc" DLC ever, and it started I can still remember the incredible outrage it caused back then. "Wait, you expect us to pay for cosmetic mods?! Are you INSANE?! We'll never stand for this!". And now look at us today...games come out completely broken, and the only thing that works is the in-game cash shop for cosmetics and p2w stuff and no one bats an eyelid. Fallout 76 is just utter nonsense that failed expectations weeks after release and yet somehow continues to dig a bigger hole for itself. There's Pillars of Eternity and Divinity, if you're okay without the first person aspects. One of those is made by Obsidian lol
Outer Worlds was sick but after about 10 hours you realise the game is hard split between places where you talk to people and the lifeless shooter arenas where you only shoot and loot, and that with the exception of the science weapons, the bug queen and the final boss you have actually seen literally every enemy and weapon in the entire game.
The writing was actually fucking fantastic though. Couldn't believe the quality and sheer variety of the lines that fly out of practically everyone you speak to.
Can't wait for the follow up.

It's too bad Fallout 76 turned out how it did. If it had actually been the Fallout game I had hoped for, I would've considered paying an extra $100 towards it. Instead I played the beta at a friend's house and never purchased the game. Shame.
Same here beta was such a waste of time. Obsidian was the majic behind Fallout. Bethesda made a huge mistake cutting them out. They need to stick to publishing and leave the games to the talented.

Yeah when they first started publishing and had all those great games they started releasing (the first evil within, dishonored, doom) I was so excited and happy that there was a publisher that let people make great games and didn't fuck with how they made them. Now they honestly out EA EA. It's like some crazy Jekyll and Hyde situation. I honestly hope that the people that actually give a fuck and were part of when bethesda were good leave the company and create their own. Or that they just go under and it's like they never existed lol.

@@89PigDestroyer Yeah Bethesda is a shell of their former self. It's very depressing, as I was a fan of theirs way back in Morrowind. Their glitchy games were acceptable because they both gave awesome stories/experiences as well as insane modding capabilities. Now, there is just no redeeming quality. 76 is the amalgamation of everything wrong. Quirky glitches are now game breaking. Modding capabilities are gone/hidden behind a paywall (You best believe they'll do the same with Starfield and ES6). Microtransactions and pay2win tactics are all over the place. Story is bland and (according to lore hounds) contradicting. It's legit depressing. They were my favorite Western developer/publisher for years. Defended them time and time again. But I'm not defending them anymore.
I remember when Jim was effusive in his praise of Skyrim, for proving a deep single-person narrative-driven experience could be a huge hit at a time when every other publisher was focused on MMOs and forcing online multiplayer into everything. How times change.

We can say the same about Bioware. The Outer Worlds reminds me of a pre-EA Bioware game with smaller, focused hub worlds, more effort given to the story/lore and great dialogue with decisions to make that affect the plot. Obsidian did a great job with KOTOR2 (after Bioware's KOTOR) despite the bugs, cut content and restrictive deadlines.
I'll throw in I enjoyed Obsidian's attempt at their own IP that was Alpha Protocol. Another game that showed so much promise but was shot in the foot by publisher interference.
To be fair, the squad selection screen is a dead-ringer for the later Mass Effect squad selection screens
