  • The ubiquitous use of social media has caused many to fear that these personalized technology platforms are creating a generation that is narcissistic and self-obsessed. But before we dismiss personalized technology as the perpetrator of our current societal ills, Professor Alloway argues that we must take a closer look at how social media can improve not only our memory of events, but also the way in which we observe our own lives and relate to those around us.
Dr. Tracy Packiam Alloway is a psychology professor and the Graduate Program Director at the University of North Florida. She was awarded an Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2015 as well as an Outstanding International Leadership Award in 2014. She was also the recipient of the prestigious Joseph Lister Award for outstanding skills in communicating to a non-specialist audience from the British Science Association. Tracy’s research has contributed to the scientific understanding of working memory, and specifically in relation to education and learning needs. She has presented her research to national organizations such as the National Center for Learning Disabilities, and as well as internationally to organizations such as the Japanese Society for Developmental Psychology and the Center on Research on Individual Development and Adaptive Education of Children at Risk in Germany, among others.

I love the approach Dr. Alloway takes to social media! I find it amazing that many people, specifically the older generations, subscribe to the idea that social media is a negative aspect of society. I love that the research shared showed that social media actually contributes to our working memory. Instead of making our generation collectively dumber, it's actually exercising our working memory which is really amazing! I loved this talk and look forward to more in the future!

I absolutely love and agree with this. As a part of the generation that is “me me me.” I hear all the time that cell phones and social media as actually made us worse and it would always made me mad. It has always been one of my strongest arguments that we have become more adept at multitasking or using “floodlight brain.” I can focus on things while taking a phone call. I can play my TV show in the back while I’m doing homework. Next time someone brings up an argument that social media is bad for society, I will make sure to link this video.

As someone who uses social media quite frequently everyday, I’ve never realized how much it could help our working memory until Dr. Alloway made that point. I try to take a few hours of my day and not be on my phone so much but now it turns out that there might be a pro to all of it. Social media has helped me remembered little things such as friends birthdays, anniversaries etc and I think that’s my working memory at work. Amazing talk!

I can admit that I am one of those people who thought that social media was making my generation narcissistic. We are so involved in our phones that we tend to forget our surroundings and the people around us. For Dr. Alloway to research and show that social media can be a positive influence, especially on working memory, is refreshing. I believe that everything can have a negative and positive effect, depending on how you look at it.

I really enjoyed this TedTalk! Usually, we only hear about the negative side of social media. It was enlightening to hear that there are some benefits. We live in a very fast paced world where nearly everyone has social media apps. I especially enjoyed learning that social media can cause an increase in empathy. Professor Alloway is an engaging and confident speaker who provided such interesting information.

I really love the approach Dr. Alloway takes in social media. Out of all of the things I've learn in developmental psychology, it's been that social media is what makes us disconnect from the "real world". I can definitely see that, and I can see aspects of how it can lead to narcissism, but it has also socialized us to take a step back and think before we respond. Social media has created and outlet to network and create our own for of communication and understanding with possible employers.

Social media gets a lot of negative commentaries as does the amount of screen time people put in. Dr. Alloway takes a scientific perspective that supports a positive effect in multiple ways. This is great news because social media and excessive screen time have become essential to connection and will inevitably continue to be a large part of our lives.

It is a common view that social media leads to disconnection from the "real world" and the inability to pay attention to what is going on beyond the screen. I was interested to learn that, in fact, social media helps people develop their attention capabilities and process information that may have initially been missed. This is a skill that can be applied beyond social media to facilitate maximum information uptake in situations like work or school. I liked how Dr. Alloway brought a new perspective on social media, emphasizing its ability to benefit our social and attention skills.

This was an educative ted talk. In my own relationships, I've noticed how social media and personality interact, and interesting ways that people seek validation and approval through their looks on social media. However, it also can be helpful in documenting events and bettering relationships with those around us. The largest downside of social media is how it leads us to compare ourselves to others "best versions" of themselves that they chose to post, while concealing other parts.

I love this point of view on social media! I agree that online connections are just as important as face-to-face interactions, and it also helps us to learn empathy. Once we see posts online that we would not likely hear about without social media, we are often compelled to offer comments and sympathy. I also found it extremely interesting that social media improves our working memory as well.

This talk really gets me thinking about the way I view social media. I've always held a pretty negative attitude toward social media and honestly favored the spotlight brain, thinking it was better for focusing and keeping goals. But the more I've learned about working memory from Dr. Alloway and after watching this video, it's interesting to see how engaging with others on social media can enhance my brain's central executive functioning and strengthen empathy. Thank you for challenging my limited perspective!

As a dedicated user of social media and a member of the generation that is all too frequently put down for this use of social media it is refreshing to hear this perspective. The connections that can be made through social media to communities that are spread out through the world are of just as much value as the connections we make in our physical communities. More people need to see the research on this subject.

The approach Dr. Alloway takes on social media is definitely one I have never heard. Growing up with social media at my finger tips, I had always been told "get off you phone and socialize in person". However, there are so many positive benefits that can come from social media like Dr. Alloway points out (processing information, empathy, and socialization). I think many people could benefit from this video because many people still have a negative connotation towards social media.

Does social media encourage empathy, connection and a sense of togetherness? I never thought of social media in these terms but when I look further into reasons behind my being on social media (family + social groups) I can see how social media can work as a means for connection and performance in memory tasks. In these times of COVID, social media can be great for staying connected while also staying apart. It’s amazing it works as a sort of a biofeedback method of expanding our working memory. Great TEDTalk!

Dr. Alloway brought light to social media that is often shut down or discouraged by users. In a time where being socially distanced and staying indoors is key, being online and connecting with others through social media is a pertinent way to develop our empathy and stay in touch safely. I initially had mixed reviews regarding social media use, but after listening to Dr. Alloway and the benefits she thoroughly described with social media use, as well as the supporting statistics from multiple age groups, I can agree that social media is not only enhancing our community, but also increasing our knowledge and working memory in a positive way.

One of the most insightful aspects of this Ted talk, is that social media can have positive implications in everyday life. The explanation of the "floodlight" brain was a refreshing takeaway. As a frequent social media user, it was very great to hear social media use in a positive light. I feel like social media is always viewed as a negative thing that the "younger" generation spends to much time on. Hearing that studies were related to social media makes this claim seem more reliable and makes me feel better about my social media use. I recently purchased an iPhone and it constantly is telling me how long I am using social media for and it always makes me nervous when I see a high number but from Dr. Alloway's research, I have started to not fret over the number as much because its not always a bad thing.

Dr. Tracy Alloway brings up several great points in her Ted Talk. This first is in stating that online connections can be just as meaningful as face-to-face connections. Social media has and always will be a gateway for communication and connection. It also serves as an outlet which we used to share updates about our lives, like Dr., Alloway mentioned. Through continuous exposure to others, points of view and other aspects of their lives we eventually develop a feeling of empathy towards them. These channels and constant interaction and engagement are also very stimulating to its users. We are always inputting, interpreting, analyzing and putting out information.

I really enjoyed the idea of how our online conversations could potentially be just as important as our face-to-face interactions with people. I have never considered this as an option, and have always felt guilty about spending time on social media sites. This video gives a whole new perspective to how social media should actually be used, and instead of demeaning those who spend time on Facebook or Twitter, it gives a sense of hope for our current and future generations. The correlation between empathy and individuals using social media for personal reasons is an amazing finding, along with the idea of how working memory can actually be improved through more prolonged usage.

I always think Dr. Alloway has a great method of speaking and storytelling to grasp the attention of the listeners. Especially in this TEDx Talk, I think to open with a personal story of going back to the UK, and then dislocating her knee at Christmas, she made the speech more of a conversation and less of a lecture. I love how Dr. Alloway challenges how we think about social media. Instead of seeing it as a hinder to our cognitive and interpersonal skills, she shows us through research how social media is actually improving our processing skills, working memory, and levels of empathy. This is incredibly relevant today as the power of social media is shown everyday and people are spending more and more time on their phones. I think if we can rewire our brain to think about the ways that we can use social media as learning tools and assets to our lives, we can create more positive rhetoric around social media. Instead of looking at social media as the next or current bad guy, she broke it down and explained in detail the benefits of social media. How one could learn and grow emotionally through the multitudes of connections garnered on social media. She even went further to state how social media increases our cognition, instead of being so focused we allow our brain to expand and gather more knowledge. I appreciate your fresh perspective on social media. Most adults overemphasize the negative aspects of technology whereas you choose to embrace it. Very informative TED talk, love the elephant guy too.

I like the way Dr. Alloway shows the positive side to social media, such as how it can actually help our working memory. Many people tend to constantly bash all social media but it's good to see that it truly can be helpful. I also enjoy how she encourages us to reach out and connect with someone online, after all, you never know what wonderful connection or friendship may come out of it.

This was awesome! I’ve always been told that social media is a bad habit to get into. I honestly found it very interesting to hear a different point of about social media and all the good that it brings. Even though that I don’t comment on others post, it’s a good way for me to connect with my family and friends I grew up with who live far away.

Dr. Alloway takes such a fascinating approach in this topic. It is such a contrast to what is usually said about social media, and very refreshing and interesting to hear! I never thought social media use could be linked to improved working memory. I think social media is a great way to interact with others and with our changing world!

Dr. Alloway did a fantastic job at explaining how social media is having an impact in the world. Opposed to many people’s negative outlook on social media, Dr. Alloway suggested that social media can help with working memory, empathy and using the “flood-light brain” to multitask. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this TED Talk and would encourage others to watch this video if they had doubts about the benefits of social media.

during the pandemic i had a hard time getting through being holed up in my house most of those days, but what got me through was a couple of friends I made online, they were countries away but kept me company. It's nice to see a positive look at it rather than the usual negativity of people we meet online and the effect social media has on us

I like that Dr. Alloway takes a step back and looks at social media in a different light. I tend to agree that social media can be used as a great platform to connect and enhance our lives. From personal experience, many of the great adventures an memories that I have stem from seeing and being inspired by something I found online, usually Instagram or Facebook.

I really love this perspective! I get incredibly frustrated when people in older generations, critique my generations use of social media. Any time I have personally tried to explain how I am facilitating connections I’ve been shut down, so to know that the research backs up my experience is incredibly validating.

I think many people would benefit from watching this talk, and I will definitely recommend it to friends and family! There are many viral videos warning us about social media and how it makes us more impersonal or diminishes our mental faculties. I have always been irritated by these videos that ignore the positive effect that social media has on us! I believe that social media has enabled people to communicate with people different from themselves in multiple ways, and that we should embrace our new ability to reach others that may be thousands of miles away.

I loved the approach taken by Dr. Alloway. A lot of the negative aspects of social media are often talked about, and the opposite perspective she had taken while incorporating other aspects into her discussion was nothing but thought-provoking. The whole thing was phenomenal and gave me a lot to think about. Amazing job!

I found this talk to be very interesting and enlightening to me about social media. It had never occurred to me that using social media increases one's empathy, but I can easily see that now. I have made some very close friends through social media in the past year, one of whom I have met up with face to face in the past few months. I also found it sort of incredible that social media can improve our working memory so much because I have always thought that it was not something that did any favors for our brain. Learning that social media can help us filter out irrelevant information in favor of relevant information and help us develop a floodlight brain in which we are able to focus on multiple pieces of information at once was very intriguing to me. It makes a lot of sense now that it has been brought to my attention, and I can understand now why it might be a good idea for me to use it more often. I thought that Dr. Alloway did a great job!

Absolutely love that presentation! Professor Alloway gives hope for my personal use of social media as well as alleviating many worries I have for my kids using social media. As many people mentioned before me social media just like any other tool can be used for doing much good for our fellow humans. True to her form Dr. Alloway is fun and engaging. I just can not believe my luck that I am able to study under such a brilliant academic. How humbling and inspiring!!

I find it extremely interesting when Dr. Alloway talks about the "floodlight brain". How we can multi-task and be even more accurate in our detail to attention. I'm very happy to hear, and learn that social media does in fact have pros to our life, because I do not see it going away anytime soon.

This view on social media and the effect that it is having on our society is so far from what people assume. It makes you think differently and reevaluate your perceptions. Social media has certainly changed the way we focus our attention, but not necessarily in a bad way. Thinking of it this way is refreshing and gives me hope for the future!

Social media is something that, though relatively new, does not seem to be going anywhere for the foreseeable future. It is something that is becoming more and more necessary in everyone's life, and yet we are often told how damaging it is and what a negative influence it has on us. I really love Dr. Alloway's talk because it points out the good side to social media as well. It is wonderful to involve a psychological basis, working memory, that allows us to look at social media in a new way. I believe that social media is unparalleled in its ability to expose people to new perspectives and connect people who are thousands of miles away. I found this talk to be very informative and look forward to more research on this topic.

This was such an amazing and thought-provoking talk! Despite the negative associations attached to different aspects of social media, it is still an incredibly prevalent part of many cultures. Social media is unrelenting and here to stay. I enjoyed this TedTalk because Dr. Alloway explained how we can use social media to our advantage. Through building empathetic connections, we can embrace social media as a positive part of life; nonetheless, like everything else in life, a healthy balance of social media usage is important, because too much Facebook, Twitter, etc. is where the negative side-effects of social media begin to play a role.

I'm happy to hear that quantifiable positive effects on cognition can be gained through social media use since it's become such a cornerstone of everyday life. Unfortunately, online communities can be home to surprising negativity. I think an important takeaway from this presentation is that ultimately we have the choice to spread positivity on the Internet, which in turn builds empathy and improves our face-to-face interactions. We can obtain the other cognitive benefits of social networking once that foundation is set. That being said, the tips and challenges provided at the end of this enlightening talk are definitely things I plan to put into practice. Thank you, Dr. Alloway, for another great lesson!

Her insightful exploration of how personalized technology can actually enhance our memory and deepen our connections with others is not only thought-provoking but also a breath of fresh air in a world often quick to criticize these platforms. It's a reminder that technology, when harnessed mindfully, has the potential to enrich our experiences and relationships. Her credentials and awards speak to her expertise in the field, making her talk both informative and inspiring.
