Serge Lutens was involved with Shiseido on the original release. The Serge Lutens Bois series (Bois de Violette, Bois Oriental, etc.) were variations of the original Féminité du Bois. Shiseido discontinued their version and Serge Lutens put it in his own line. I like the Serge version, but the Shiseido version was just stunning. If you can get your hands on it, grab it. It's hard to find.

its embarrassing that this youtuber doesnt know this, it was created in 1992, he got this wrong too - better go look for other stuff to review as you got no clue about perfumes

@@JuttaBerlin Holy, just real mean. He made a mistake. We are all human after all. I am sure you're even guilty of it from time to time. Certainly nothing he need be embarrassed about! 🙃

I love your Serge Lutens reviews. I own two of their scents and find the line really interesting. I actually wore 5 o’clock au gingembre the other day!

This is a gorgeous fragrance. Indeed it was one of those mythical perfumes that blogs wrote odes of several years ago. I love it dearly and have a decant but never pushed the trigger on a full bottle bc of longevity. It’s such a quiet personal perfume and it’s sooo gorgeous I want everyone around me to know abt it too. ☺️
It’s on my Buy List so perhaps I will own it in a year or so.
To me, I get lots of cedar. Cedary musk if that makes any sense. It’s prickly but soft. I imagine it a soft charcoal color but it’s furry. The edges arent distinct.

I've heard you say before you review fragrances when you want to, not when they're in demand. Good for you!! I just saw your post on this review of FDB and I clicked right away! I havn't watched yet, but I'm super excited to hear your thoughts! I love it!!! Let's see what you think.... :)

I have red somewhere that SL Bois et Fruits is more similar with an old FdB. Serge had artistic rights on FdB, if I understood well, so he just repeated it in his own line.
I love you soooo much! ❤️
Greetings from Serbia and sory for my bad English 💋

I’ve never tried this one because it’s a woody scent, with cedar, and it has rather mixed reviews. I may have to give it a try at some point. I am glad you don’t let the notes listed dictate your review. You call it as you smell it lol. I wonder if it’s the stone fruits, that come off fleshy sometimes, that is giving the waxy, suede/leather touch??Lovely review Tom!

To me, the original was a plummy wood. This version is a woody plum. I don’t care for this version as much. It feels “bony” and dry to me. The Shiseido version was lush and full.

Really enjoyed your struggle to describe this and understand it exactly - but I do love this fragrance in the autumn season. You don't say much about the plum aspect which is fairly significant.

These reviews are great--where you break down the notes as you see them and share with us things you smell that might not be listed notes (i.e. the cola scent, the "skanky" and leather scents. Hope this makes sense, I'm only just having my coffee). You give vivid & in-depth analysis, to where I can almost "smell" the scent. :)

Dolce Vita and Feminite Du bois are both created by the same perfumer - Pierre Bourdon (although Christopher Sheldrake did some further work on FdB). Also, Feminite Du Bois was created when Serge Lutens was in charge of Shiseido's perfume department (he was also in charge when the legendary Nombre Noir was created), so he took the production right when he opened his own frangrance line. I have both the Shiseido and the Serge Lutens versions. But I agree with Luca Turin that Bois de Violette is superior than both.

@ouch110 Serge Lutens was the Creative Director for Shiseido in the 90’s, hence Shiseido had the whole makeup range inspired by Serge Lutens, that included Femiite du Bois.. all their advertising campaign was also inspired by that iconic Serge Lutens imaginary model... It was also at that time Shiseido relaunched their Basara perfume pour Homme to kind of matched Feminite du Bois perfume, their female perfume at that time.. Shiseido Basara for men, the gorgeous spicy effervescent oriental woody male perfume was indeed a good match for Shiseido Feminite du Bois. That is how i remembered because I was a loyal fan of Shideido skincare and makeup in the mid 90s...

Undeniably gorgeous and intriguing! Keeps me questioning and yes, there is something vintage/animalic about it that makes it grrrr. I'm in love w this one. Wish it lasted longer!! Even if closer to the skin..

I adore this one. My guess is the cinnamon and incense give it the subtle carnal aspect. I wear this on on cold Christmas Eve's because the woodsy Incense also feels the slightest bit churchy. Love your reviews.

Love FdB - it's one of my more lightweight, transparent orientals. I wear it all year round! Would love to get my nose on the original Shiseido some day.

Didn't Shiseido buyout Serge Lutens ?
Is there one of Sege Lutens that's like Lubin's Upper Ten ?
I know Un Bois Vanillie has changed .
I haven't sampled this one Thomas yet. Will do though .
I do like sweet woods though fragrances though.
Sotd AdP's Colonia . Super easy to wear.

Shiseido discontinued this in their original line but the Serge Lutens fragrance line IS still a Shiseido brand. (The way Tom Ford is an Estee Lauder brand.) So it was a convenient and safe move to re-release it in a non-mass format under a “niche line” for people who still want it. After all Serge used to be Shiseido’s Creative Director back in the day and had a hand in its creation.

Hi Tom. Are you at all familiar w/ YSL's NU? To my nose it is almost identical to FdB, but NU has a stronger projection.

Funny...I have a small bottle of the shesaido fragrance you mentioned that this is based on and it is animalic ,spices, musky sweet. Not sure what the fuss was about!

I had a small decant of Shiseido’s version and I didn’t like it, it was weak and boring. Serge Lutens feminite dubois is beautiful. I don’t get Coca Cola. It’s so beautiful and uniquely sweet, I can’t explain it either, it’s very nice . I am happy to have it in my collection, especially since I got the last one on the planet.

I bought it yesterday. I was thinking what is it smells so unusual in the end. I think that it is ladan like in the chirch. It's not bad, but if I knew this before I bought it, may be I think twice. Anyway, I have a profundis in the my collection. I come to the conclusion that Serge Lutence has his own signature in those two.

Oh I wanted to really like this...bummer. On my skin it's a very aromatic, balsamic spicy fume...that heavy 'root soil smell that shoots up the nostrils like horseradish and then slaloms right down the throat' vibe which sadly Portrait of a Lady did to me also. Patchouli is a note that I have to be very careful with-- same with clove and ginger (both feature in Feminite du Bois, I think), which you have to handle with such care as a perfumer as even a micro dose extra can dominate an entire composition. I'm in a real minority I realise, as I can't stand Portrait of a Lady. What a bizarre choice of name for that fragrance. The one Serge Luten fragrance I am beyond excited to try is Fille en Augilles as so many people have said it smells very similar to TF's 'Plum Japonais' but is the 'superior version and what TF wishes Plum Japonais was like'. Woah. I'm intrigued as pine is a key not in FeA and I am not a pine fan, nor do I associate pine with Plum Japonais. Another volatile note for me. Thank you for all these videos-- I love visiting your library and watching old videos of yours when doing other tasks at home. You're on the big screen in my living room, ha!
