    10:31 The German Quote is "Man muss noch Chaos in sich haben, um einen tanzenden Stern gebären zu können" and is translated as "One must still have chaos in oneself to be able to give birth to a dancing star" and it's a quote by Friedrich Nietzsche

    You've cracked the BTS code . . . fun bop, deep ass meaning. This song is deeply influenced by Demian by Herman Hesse. A major theme in that book is about embracing the chaos that lives inside of us all, and that only by embracing all aspects of yourself, can you become a whole person. The visual themes are very much about facing and resisting (or not resisting) temptation.

    71 year old BTS Army here. BTS has gone far beyond "Kpop" and is a global phenomenon. The depth of their lyrics has made them the biggest group in the world.
    Herman Hesse's book "Demian" is the inspiration for this song. It is all about yielding to temptation. V is the fallen angel at the end. He was the "demon angel" and was punished by losing his wings.
    Thanks for your reaction! 💜

  • @ashliza
    @ashliza 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +94

    I actually read Demian because of this song! The themes are heavily influenced by that book, and I gotta say it legitimately impacted my worldview and my life in about 100 concise pages. If anyone checks it out, I'd recommend the shortest translation you can find! I don't think it needed any extra fluff so I have no idea why so many translations are longer. It's a refreshingly honest coming of age story from 1919 Germany all about how hard it is to actively "journey toward oneself" consistently throughout life, and it so clearly illustrates why you'll never reach your full potential if you reject the "darker" sides of yourself. RM and some of the other members have cited Demian as being really important to them and their development. I'm grateful they made me aware of it, great read!
    As always, thanks for your reactions Nick! Don't worry too much about pausing, you can't please everyone so it's best to do whatever's comfortable for you. Appreciate your perspectives! Borahae

    BTS really turns their fans into philosophers. They base a this and several other music videos on differences novels and books about philosophy. This video is extra trippy and actually has 7 short films and another music video that were released one a day leading up to it’s drop. BTS MVs are like short films themselves but they have a ton of other short films too, mostly all intertwined. It’s one part of why the BTS rabbit hole goes so deep. Not all MVs are about the timeline, but often once people stumble onto it one and get super confused it makes them want to watch more and more to figure it out. It’s so fun to get sucked in!
    Plus a lot of BTS albums have over arching stories or come in trilogies to tell a story or cover certain themes. And they do tons of sequels to songs and references. Basically making it so the more music you listen to the more you can enjoy the rest of the music and it’s super satisfying to listen to entire albums in order. As opposed to most artists we listen to we pick our few favorite songs to add to a playlist.
    One really cool example of a sequel song is “I’m Fine.” In 2016 the song “Save ME” came out and it was this tropical house/pop track about desperatly asking a lover to stay by your side in dark times and save you.
    Then in 2018 they dropped the track “I’m Fine” which was about no longer needing someone because they had grown to realize they could save themselves and are fine whether or not someone came to save them or not. What’s really cool is the second track actually samples the same synth as the first song, only played in reverse. Even the choreo interlocks as “Save Me” has a lot of hands reaching out for help and ends with them falling to their knees, but “I’m fine” choreo has them literally pull themselves back up to their feet.

    To give some info and answer the title of the video:
    No, "kpop" which is a term referring to a specific part of the korean music industry, generally speaking, is not that deep. BTS is though. That's a part of the reason why they're so appreciated and loved by many people. They're authentic, honest and have deep lyrics. (They also have just fun songs too! something for everyone 😊)
    (Btw the term "kpop" really just means the industry, it doesn't have anything to do with the genre of music because there are many different genres of music in what is called "kpop")

    Soooo much packed into this vid. If I had to boil it down, this is the gist: It's about temptation/desire, falling into that temptation/desire, and the aftermath of giving in to it. Also, the fact that you always have the power to resist/come back out of the temptation, but a lot of times you don't (example: Jimin is blindfolded and tied to the door, but his hands are free and he could just take the blindfold off and be free but he doesn't). There have been lots of explanation vids done for this if you want to look into them. Every set/scene/shot is PACKED with symbolism. Lots of religious and philisophical references as well as lots of famous art references.

    6:30 lumpens directed this mv, and most of their mv's. He's their go to, been with them from the beginning. He's a genius imo. 💜 this song is about temptation and is based on the book demian, as well as Nietzsche. It's also part of their storyline that includes numerous mv's, short films, short stories and a mobile game to tell a cohesive story. 💜 eta that writing you were curious about is a quote from Nietzsche
    BTS is known for making upbeat, even goofy fun songs, while giving a deep, often sad meaning.
    It's pretty much all temptation, not just romance, it encompasses all temptation

  • @enicole1203
    @enicole1203 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    In the context of the BTS storyline, they were originally singing songs of youth and innocence, and at this point in the story the youth is encountering the world and all the temptations that come at them, and the desire to give in, knowing they should resist, so I always interpret this mv as just the many things out there that might tempt someone down the wrong path because it seems beautiful and intriguing even at the same time they know it's dangerous. Drugs, sex, money, excess, etc

  • @NanciBK

    If you really want to appreciate their dance, I highly recommend checking out their dance practice videos for songs as well, because when you watch the MV you miss a lot due to the cinematography and storytelling going on as they cut to various scenes, whereas the practice videos, which are more like demonstration videos, are designed to show off the choreo. They don't have cuts and give you a continuous view. Their choreography is not just dope ass moves, it is visual performance art storytelling as well, with many moves related to lyrics or themes of the songs. There are practice videos for most of their hundreds of songs. I also highly recommend watching live performances too as they are EVEN BETTER live, crazy as that sounds. They never lip synch and their stage presence is insane.

    I actually feel that you understood the meaning (at least one of the meanings) of the song perfectly even after watching the MV! Its based on a book that essentially says that in order to mature and become an adult you have to recognise and accept a dark side of yourself. I love your interpretation! When it comes to this song, there are no wrong answers.

    BTS loves write deep lyrics and each one of the members are amazing songwriters and producers.
    They have like album series and each one of them have an specific topic.
    The fun thing about BTS's discography is that you can really see them grow as people on each album they've released chronologically and the feelings they had at the time. For example, the first 3 albums talked about school because their ages were between 15-20, then they talked about youth, then temptation (this song belongs to that era), then about loving yourself going through all the stages of love, their identity, their thoughts and feelings during the covid pandemic and so on. And it has to be said that they also have individual solo projects while they are in the same group.
    There is a lot of stuff but they’ve been in the industry for 10 years now ;)

  • @Mark-vj7zd
    @Mark-vj7zd 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    The Nietzsche quote above the mirror is “One must have chaos within oneself to give birth to a dancing star”.
    The statue is Abraxas, a god of both good and evil. In kissing it, Jin (or rather the character Sinclair from the Hesse novel ‘Demian’) is accepting the dark side of his human nature. This song and album marks the start of their exploration of Jungian psychology, which was influenced by Nietzsche.
    The whole mv is packed with images of temptation, choice and falling, beginning with the painting ‘Fall of the Rebel Angels’ that captivates Jin (Sinclair).

    this was my first bts comeback and let me tell you, i wasn’t prepared at all. the mv is connected to the bu so that’s why you might not get a few references but overall you can get the meaning as an individual mv too.
    something i’ve always really liked about bts is that they keep their lyrics just vague enough that it can apply directly to the listener. so in this case, the you can be whatever it is the listener is struggling with. it might be a person for them or something else entirely. they tend to do this a lot. words like you or yours can be people or emotions or different states of their own being. it’s so amazing to read tbh.

    @15:30- great commentary and analogy. This song can definitely encompass the idea of excess or indulgence of anything. To the point that it becomes our temptation and it leads to bad results or destruction. I thought the MV captured that well at the end with everything getting destroyed including Jin’s face cracking.

    The whole album blood sweat and tears is from (wings) is an ode about becoming an adult, giving in to temptation and getting “tainted” that’s what all the simbology of green blood and tears comes from, also the apple as the forbidden fruit. I always related the meaning of blood sweat and tears to fame like you, specially in the kpop industry, they knew all the heartbreak and the toxicity they were getting themselves into, but gladly took it anyway… but there’s so many ways to interpret the song and all are valid

    I hope you get into their albums. Their albums have set themes and arcs. For example, the wings album, blood sweat and tears is the lead single from the album, is loosely based on the novel demian by Hermann Hesse. It's about coming of age and temptation.
    Their first album trilogy was about the education system in korea, students and school love...
    Another trilogy of albums is the Love Yourself series, which has a three part structure like a movie and follows a person who 1. falls in love, 2. looses themselves for this love, and 3. then rediscovers themselves through self love.

    loved both reactions to blood sweat and tears and fire and you got fires meaning correct however there were some things you missed by not going over the lyrics on doolset. in the "stop comparing " the lyrics are : "What kind of spoon you are to say such a thing to me,calling me a spoon when I’m a human" the entire line is talking about classism. Spoon class theory refers to the idea that individuals can be classified into different socioeconomic classes (spoon classes) based on the income or assets of their parents and that one’s success in life depends entirely on being born into a wealthy family. The most commonly talked-about spoon classes are (in hierarchical order): the gold spoon, the silver spoon, the bronze spoon, the dirt spoon. (side note: there’s something called “the diamond spoon class” even above the gold spoons.) BTS, coming from a small entertainment agency in an industry that is dominated and almost governed by few big agencies, has been gone through unfair treatments and unnecessary hardships. many people look down on bts even to this day because they didnt start at a big label and them and their label were never supposed to succeed.

    The words Namjoon reads are from Hermann Hesse's book Demien. Written in German, heavily influenced by Jung and Nietschke, published in 1919, the book is the journey of a young boy/man finding himself. This section is about temptation and evil.
    The engraved words are Nietschke.
    The painting is by Pieter Bruegel the Elder called Rebel Angels. 1562. Art in those days was beginning to question good and evil, Bruegel was really (literally) sticking his head out.
    The green drink is absinthe, 148 proof, tastes like licorice.
    The statue in front is La Pieta, the Virgin Mary. The one he kisses is Lucifer.
    Unlike other industry k-pop groups, Bang P.D., director of BigHit, told the guys to write what was in their hearts.
    RM, Suga, J-Hope wrote lyrics, and Jimin wrote the melody.
    You're obviously well-educated and thoughtful and I like that! BTS is so deep that you could probably get a PhD studying them. I'm sure people are doing that already!
    This was the 5th or 6th song I saw in a row, sitting here stunned about everything. I had seen that painting in Europe and studied the artist - I knew this group was smart way beyond imagination. The best thing I've done is learn the history of the songs. There's another Patreon site Enjoybtsmore which has all subtitles and a lot of information.
    While you're at it, watch some Run BTS to get to know their personalities, and there are lots of guides and interviews.

      i don’t think that the statue seokjin kisses is lucifer, i think it’s abraxas since at the end of his journey sinclair, in demian, converts to abraxas’ cult.
      it would also explain why the virgin mary’s face breaks, since sinclair starts to doubt his faith in cristianity during his journey.

  • @lightefilit
    @lightefilit 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    You're on the right track. Among other comments who already explained the theme of temptation, I would like to add that a kiss with the devil in most literature means sealing a deal with the devil. Traditionally, you seal your deal with evil sources with either a kiss or even... well, sex. So, in this case, the kiss with the statue was literally him giving in to temptation and "accepting the devil within".

    BTS is deep, generally speaking "kpop" is not. I can not recommend enough for you to watch "A Guide to BTS Members: The Bangtan 7" by Taylor Mari. These guys are crazy talented and great song writers. I kinda find it ironic that they are the face of "kpop" while being almost the antithesis of it, they write their own music for one and their roots are in hip hop. Almost everything people assume about them is wrong. They came from very humble beginnings with a small company working their way up and the kpop industry was far from welcoming to them most looking down on them for not having much money. Now that they are hugely successful suddenly the same people who ridiculed them are sucking up to them instead. But they are some of the kindest and humblest humane beings. Before BTS I only listened to rock alternative or hard rock like Tool, Deftones, Mudvayne, Flaw, Alice in Chains, Nirvana list goes on. I had never before been a fan of rap or hip hop music but I absolutely love the rappers in the group, love them all really. I've never connected as a fan as much as I have with these guys, it's kinda amazing really.

    A short explanation from an online article written about the song:
    The song is about sacrificing everything to achieve your deepest desires, be it, love, success, or anything else; As for BTS , the composition reflects the their willingness to pursue their dreams to the fullest despite having to deal with the dark temptations that come their way.

    if you want really deep K-pop, try Park Hyo Shin - Wildflower. Do a live version of it though as you can see and hear the emotion more in his voice during the performance. My favorite and most emotional one is with him wearing a black suite with white butterflies on it and having white hair sitting on a circular stage surrounded by the audience (search Park Hyoshin - Wildflower | 박효신 - 야생화 [Yu Huiyeol's Sketchbook / 2017.07.26] ). It's truly incredible and one I keep going back to over and over again. 🥰

    Re: your title - Not really...But BTS is deep.
    BTS transcends K-Pop in many, many ways. It would be better not to refer to them as a representation of K-Pop because in many ways, they break the mold and do not fit. K-Pop is an industry, not a genre. It covers many styles and genres and there is argument about what is and is not K-Pop. Things are changing now in the industry because of the success of BTS and there are many, many things that they started or popularized which are copied by many now, with mixed results. Boracity Magazine has some videos on 'Trends BTS Started' if you want to see more about that.
    BTS were also very mistreated by the industry as not fitting. They didn't have connections with other artists and labels from the start, coming as they did from a broke, tiny company and all cast as unknowns, not traded around as trainees as many large agencies do. And for years they said they didn't even feel like they had been invited to the award shows they were attending because of how the other artists treated them, and to this day they have few friends in the industry because most of the other labels don't like their artists fraternizing with BTS. Again, this is starting to change since Big Hit fairly recently restructured as Hybe, (Korean pronunciation mix of Hive and Hype) a large legal entity with a grape cluster of smaller labels under it, including Big Hit. Big Hit still only represents Lee Hyun (a soloist and BTS' only senior artist at their label) BTS and their newer junior group TXT, plus each BTS member as a soloist. And that's it. That's all the artists at Big Hit. But other labels under Hybe are now technically in the same company with BTS, the company that BTS built from the ground up. So BTS has more opportunities to make friends with other artists. But they say now people find them intimidating and hard to approach because of their fame. 🤦‍♀
    A big part of the reason they blew up internationally, and survived despite industry lockout, suppression and multiple attempts at sabotage, is that they were forced to take to the internet to reach fans because their company was broke and because of industry mistreatment (press slander, not invited on the variety shows groups typically use in S Korea to get known, mistreatment by show hosts on rare occasions they were invited, cut from broadcasts, cut from live shows, etc.) So they blogged and vlogged and streamed their own content, as no one else in their industry was doing in 2013. As a result, they accidentally/incidentally found an international audience. It was unexpected. They continue to face industry pushback and suppression, including almost no radio play, being used as ratings bait while being mistreated behind the scenes, being denied Grammys despite being by far the most accomplished people in their categories, racism, xenophobia, and much more.
    If you want to know more about the above you can see xCeleste's videos about 'BTS Hardships,' bby gang mag's videos 'BTS Vs K-Pop,' 'BTS: More than K-Pop' and 'How BTS Paved the Way;' and Boracity magazine's videos 'BTS Paved the Way,' 'Why Most ARMYs Don't Like K-Pop,' 'BTS vs Radio' and 'Why the music industry is terrified of BTS.'
    Their story is very much unique to them and it doesn't really bear comparing it to anyone else in K-Pop or outside of it. I also recommend Taylor Mari's intro video 'Guide to the Bangtan 7' to help you understand a little more about the guys and how they came up from nothing, against all odds.
    Yes, their music is layered and mutli-faceted and deep, speaking on and inspired by topics highly uncommon in K-Pop like socio-politics, economics, history, philosophy, mental health, self love, visual arts, current events and more. This particular song is inspired by German Swiss existential philosophy and psychological theory from the beginning of the 20th century, as is this whole album, Wings. This song is essentially a song about growing up. It is about temptation and how the innocence of childhood must be shed in order to become a fully realized adult person. You must have both dark and light inside you, the duality, the chaos, in order to grow. The duality is represented by a hell of a lot of symbolism of innocence, temptation, and falling from innocence in the video. There is a seduction taking place, as the shadows and temptations seduce the guys. In the end Jin, the main character in the video who begins with his contemplation of the painting "The Fall of the Rebel Angels" embraces the duality by kissing the statue of Abraxis, the God of both Good and Evil, and then his shell of innocence begins to crack and fall away as he looks into the mirror with the Nietzsche quote above it. There are also a lot of hidden clues in the video to the fictional storyline that runs through their albums, but that is separate to this meaning.

    While this video can stand on its own, it does, technically, have to deal with the BU (Bangtan/BTS Universe), which is a fictional storyline which runs throughout some of BTS's music videos and content. So there is a larger story at play here, but, to sum up, it deals with the themes of, well, sin, basically. Greed, lust, being tempted by 'evil'. I think you got it perfectly when you said that there was something sad to it.
    Edit: By the end, I think you hit it completely on the head.

    The music video's visuals are largely references to the book Demian by Herman Hesse as well as references to the myth of Icarus. Also lots of opposing images of good and evil. A white door and a black door, a demon statue, an angel statue, etc. The opening painting is the fall of the rebel angels. There are also two different famous painting in the background the fall of icarus and the lament for icarus. :)

    Hi :) a german follower here. At 10:32 when you paused the video the line says "Man muss noch Chaos in sich haben, um einen tanzenden Stern zu gebären." And damn it´s such a beautiful verse. It translates into "You (still) need to have chaos in yourself to give birth to a dancing star (in a moon-universe-way of a star)." But it´s also a more passive phrase, not "having chaos" as in a "grabbing or working for the chaos", more like preserving the chaos and protect that little portion that is left of it.
    I would´ve overlooked that beautiful phrase, so glad you look at the videos in such a detailed way!
    - Also, on a little side note, wasn´t in Jimins epic solo song his body written all over with german lyrics?! Need to look that up again soon :D

    Interesting, it's literally rare for people to get BST on the first reaction. You're one of that.
    I can't believe you got that just because you trusted they don't mainly write about romantic relationships just based on two songs.
    Most of their songs may seem kinda for romantic aspect, there's truth to that as well. But layers man. All interpretation could be true at the same time.

  • @RB-zw6ym
    @RB-zw6ym 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Yeah you're interpretation is totally valid. Some other people also connect it to damien, which is a philosphy book aboit growing up, and temptation/falling into sin. I read because of them lol. I totally agree its an embrace of it, like in adukthood.
    Also before this song dropped, there were a b7nch of short films that tie to a storyline i loved. I still remember the hype back then as i waited for them on vlive lol. I woildnt react to any storyline stuff until you can recognise them, and you must start from the beginning.

    I'M enjoying your reactions to BTS. I have to say BTS is deep. I am going to make a friendly suggestion when you watch. First run, listen to the music and watch the imagery of the video, don't even bother with the lyrics just feel it. On second listen actually pay attention to the lyrics. I'm not telling you what to do honest, just a thought, you do you, i'll still enjoye your videos 🙂 have a great day!!!

And you wouldn't even imagine how profound it is in just first watch so I'd highly recommend watching the explanation vid for it: "Blood Sweat & Tears: What Does It All Mean?" It's a 10min vid but absolutely eye-opening. It has all the info you need.

    No worries on the pausing! MOST of us don't mind. We'd much rather see you take your time to appreciate it as a whole - cinematography, lyrics, choreography, and more - rather than rush through it. I actually feel bad for those who think they *have* to rush...they often miss a lot.
    Personally, I typically watch the new (group) MV's at least 10 - 15 times - once to focus on each member, once for the lyrics, once for the music, once for the choreo, once for that visual (why there? why did they do that? why those outfits? Etc.), and then again a few more times to focus on the background instruments, ad libs, and anything else I may have missed in previous viewings.
    They rarely ever "just make a video". Most of them have very deep lyrics and meanings if you actually pay attention and don't rush it. So, please, do take as much time as you need to.

    There are many clues in the MV but as someone else has said it's based on the book Demian it's about growing up, facing evil, temptation falling to it, loss of innocence and finally rejecting harmful behaviour's. I'll give you some pointers at one point we have Jungkook on that swing thing and tiny white feather's falling and the a large painting of the 'Fall of Icrus' Who fell to the temptation of pride. when he was told by his father not to flight too high but he sucomed and flew too high so the Sun melted the wax that held his wings together and he fall back to earth the impact killing him. There's a exploding of the statue Mary and the baby Jesus. There's the white door and and black door suggesting one way is pure the other is evil.
    The Statue Jin kissing is the god that is neither male or female but both neither good or evil but both I don't know the whole myth and I don't know who to spell it's name, sorry.
    Jin kissing it is him accepting all sides of himself so he can continue to grow (go forward)
    Suga (aka Agust D) playing the Church Organ is a referrence too the book the Church Organ Player who helps Demian to become and accept who he is get to accept the parts he wants to keep of himself while rejecting the bits he doesn't want.
    The whole MV is full of symoblism. Oh RM quotes from the book but he use's the English Translation not the original German.
