    Great video. Finally someone posted a video about the W220 on how to install and after market radio. I did this install myself a couple of years ago. 2 tips for you. You can disregard them for you don’t like them. 1- you don’t have to go to the canbus distribution block if you don’t like to run the wires and remove the plastics. The faster and easier way is to tap into the harness for the AC switch panel which is right below the radio. You will find 2 twisted wires there for canbus high and low colored brown and red/brown. By tapping to those 2 wires you will be connected to the can-bus system and it will work fine. At least for me it did work fine and saved me about 30min to 1 hour or installation. 2- as far as the radio antenna goes, you have to buy an antenna extension cable which is sold separately for these cars and has a OE connector. I believe the length of the antenna extender cable is about 6-7 meters long which translates to 20-24 feet, not sure of the exact length. Or put an aftermarket antenna but I doubt it will work as good as the OE one. Now all it’s left is to figure out the best way to mount a back up camera. There are a couple of ways but still not sure which one is the fastest and cleanest way. Looking forward for you to post a video about that install. Great video again. Thank you for posting.

    • @frenchineer
      @frenchineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
      I ended up tapping into the distribution block for the CAN bus since I wasn't sure if it would interfere with signal to tap in to another system's wires, but it's good to hear that's a viable option! I may try out an aftermarket radio antenna down the road, but for now I use android auto anyway. I'm not sure I feel up to running a wire through to the trunk just yet.
      I have installed a backup camera nice and cleanly, but I need to refine and test something before filming anything about that install. I'll also be installing a dashcam, and filming a review of the head unit down the line too!

      @@eugenewong504 because the radio Antea doesn’t have a wire in the back of the original HU. It’s in the left side of the trunk by the unit amplifier. So you need an antenna extension from the trunk to the Seicane HU. At least for USA it’s setup like this. I hear that for the other markets the antenna it’s not in the trunk but in the back of the OE unit.

      CAN Bus Wiring... not yet mentioned...it is assumed these two wires do not carry a constant signal or voltage or current that adds additional loads to either side of their connections. If so, it would create added loads to either connected sides. And, may potentially develop, effect or create overcurrent and or short circuit issues? Agreed? Or, not an issue?

    Normally one should connect a blue wire (from the car) to the antenna power pin from the radio. Otherwise, FM reception might be pretty bad since the antenna amplifier of the car is not activated. EDIT: Apparently on the W220 there is no antenna cable for the radio anyhow (it plugs into the amplifier/audiogateway in the trunk); hence activating the antenna amplifier wouldn't help. For those working on different models (e.g., W209) that have an antenna cable to plug into the radio, what I wrote above applies.

      Thank you! If you're talking about the W221 S-Class, there are options for a similar type of radio. In that case, it involves replacing the nav screen, so the completed install still looks factory! I'm not exactly sure what type of connections would have to be made. Basic research looks like it's a piggyback system that ties in to the existing system with a new screen, which could mean there's no splicing required.

    This looks to be a better alternative to the Avin and Dynavin units for those of us who own MBs of this era. Does this unit play iPods through USB? I’m also curious what is shown on the instrument cluster as far as audio and navigation from the unit. Any insight?

      I was able to try it out today, and with a CD through the head unit's player no information was displayed on the instrument cluster. Unfortunately that's a function that is lost in the upgrade. The regular car functions like trip mpg, maintenance, etc, are unaffected of course.
      If you plan on using the head unit's interface, do note that the up/down arrows on the steering wheel are intercepted as commands to the head unit (next/previous track). This does not happen with Android Auto for me though.

    I have a pre-facelift w220 and I was considering buying this. Do you know if the Seicane model integrates with your Instrument Cluster multifunction display? The multifunction display gives you navigation information from the original comand module and I dont want to lose that.

    • @frenchineer
      @frenchineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's an interesting question, I didn't know it showed navigation information! I installed this very soon after getting the car and didn't test out the original GPS system.
      Since the new head unit replaces the navigation unit, you would likely lose that functionality (Android Auto does not interface with my cluster display). Instead you would get navigation all displayed on the new unit with the new built in option, Android Auto, or Apple Carplay. It's definitely a tradeoff if you're used to the navigation info in the cluster.

    what are you getting from the CANBUS - is there any reason I couldn't use that optical adapter and install a more mainline unit like alpine or kenwood? I realize it's only 2 channel but I assume it's just converting audio from the RCA in, not doing any amplification or anything.

    • @frenchineer
      @frenchineer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you could use that adapter for a regular double DIN head unit, but the CAN Bus decoder does make the steering wheel controls work, allow for automatic change between light/dark modes in android auto, and shows which door is open on the head unit. I'm also not sure whether volume adjustments on the new unit are passed to the factory amplifier via the CAN Bus or if it's just via the signal level input to the fiber decoder.

    From your install it look to me as the complete stock system is untouched? Was your system before this install work just fine? I ask because my audio gate way doesn’t work and the system as a whole doesn’t work without it. It will just turn on for 10 seconds then back off. I want to just eliminate the whole system but after seeing your install it looks simple enough, so I’m debating on going this route. But I’m curious to how the audio sounds. Is all of the speakers workings normally?

    • @frenchineer
      @frenchineer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My original head unit worked with no issues, and with the new system, all the speakers still work (you only lose the ability to adjust the volume fade front to back). The only thing replaced from the factory system is the head unit. This unit uses the built in fiber optics (MOST) system, so if you have an issue with that in your car the radio replacement may not fix it. It could be worth it to get a replacement gateway so you don't have to bypass the fiber optics system.
      The system sounds really good, especially after making some personal adjustments to the built in equalizer since it runs through the original Bose amplifier.

      I did not get it working, though I'll admit I didn't try yet. In the factory configuration, the FM antenna is wired to the rear components of the audio system, near the amplifier in the trunk. The CAN bus may have sent commands to the tuner in the original configuration, but would not have carried the audio signal.
      I believe you could use an adapter and run a wire from the factory antenna to the new unit up front. Another option get a windshield mounted aftermarket antenna and run the wire to the new unit (they are almost invisible and flush to the glass on the inside).

      If you have a facelift w220, there is nothing else to do for the fiber optics. If your car has the pre-facelift system, you would have to bypass the CD changer and wire up d2b wake up for the amp.
      For the CAN bus, you only need to run the wires from the driver footwell to the radio's decoder.

      I installed a wired camera that is mounted inside the car at the top of the rear window which was fairly simple. I will be showing how it is installed and how it works in a new video where I show more about the head unit.
      The fiber optic plug I show is how the original head unit sends information to the Bose amplifier located in the trunk. There are two versions available because prior to the facelift, a different fiber optics system was used, which uses a different connector. Since your car is a 2004 with bose, it should be the same fiber optic system as mine.

      Another viewer left a comment on how he got his set up working on his pre-facelift. Here's what he said, so hopefully it will help you out:
      I ordered the same head unit you did and added the fiber optic decoder (which is the correct one for my model 2003 s430 4 matic d2b Bose). Ordered the jumper wires you posted and followed all your steps. Connected the battery and the unit fired right up! But… NO SOUND 😱! Spent like 2days traveling the inter webs and stumbled across a video explaining the fiber optic loop issues. Found that the amp wasn’t turning on because the new radio wasn’t sending the signal to it. Found the wiring diagram for my original wiring harness and spliced into the d2b wake up. Then… bam! Sound! But then it was Intermitted and would cut out every 5-10 secs for 5-10 secs. Back to the inter-webs! Ended up having to bypass the factory CD changer because the fiber optic loop wasn’t getting the signal back from it so it would play sound constantly. After doing that the sound worked flawlessly! I even added in the wireless backup camera (to avoid the nightmare of running wiring throughout the car!

      Unfortunately, the way our cars are set up, there is no traditional antenna connector where the original head unit plugs in. I haven't done it yet, but I may be installing a separate antenna to get radio functionality. Otherwise it looks like the FM antenna connects to the amplifier in the rear of the car, so it may be possible to run a connection from there to the new head unit.

      The CAN bus decoder allows the new radio to interpret a bunch of signals that the car uses internally. For the S-Class, that includes steering wheel controls, knowing whether the headlights are on or off, if a door is open, etc. To my knowledge, all the Seicane kits for the W220 come with the CAN bus decoder.
      The optional fiber optics decoder box depends on the system you have in your car though. Since you have a 2003, the stock radio may look the same but have the earlier style fiber optics system. Before you order anything, I'd recommend checking the connectors on the back of your head unit so you can see which fiber optics decoder box you would need. If it's the older style, there are a couple more wires to connect.

All in all I’m super happy and even updated the radio to display the Benz logo on the head unit when it comes on! All that to say THANK YOU for your post. This usually happens if the battery voltage gets too low or the battery is disconnected. If you tested the radio with the car off, it probably drained your battery!
      To reset it, start the car and turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, then all the way to the right 3 or 4 times. The next time you start your car it should be reset.
      You should also check if your windows and sunroof open and close automatically. If they don't, manually open them and hold the switch for a couple seconds once it's open, then manually close and hold the switch a couple seconds once it's closed. This should reset them!

As well, a WiFi subscription and onboard phone subscription would be still be required for onboard SAT and Phone.

      While I think the later MB models may share some similarities, I don't think it would be possible to use them in the W220 since later cars (W221) integrate the music/radio system much more into the car's systems. I have helped install a similar type of radio in a 2011 E-Class (W212), and for that car the new screen works in parallel to the original system since that must be allowed to work for the factory camera and time settings (among other things). This isn't possible on our model though.
      I do think this Seicane unit is a very good option if you are willing to forego the CD changer. I recommend that you look into Android Auto or Apple CarPlay which integrate GPS and phone functionality using your cell phone.

In my wish list there are adding a reverse camera and to see if anyone had any experience with replacing old side mirrors with newer, or modified, units that have a light warning on the blind spot, like modern cars have. With these few improvements this W220 can become a truly timeless car. I wish you tried something like these side mirrors. I see a very limited use for the dashcam for myself but infinitely more valuable blind spot warning system.
