The car is absolutely phenomenal I have maintained it at a Mercedes dealer local to be here in Kansas City. I drove it 240 miles a day for work one way so about a 500 mile a day commute for seven years-not one failure, the vehicle never strayed at once. I have been through two sets of air suspension shocks/struts and six pumps which I can do myself at this point. These are truly tanks and I also have a 1996 S320 with 640k miles. These are cab’s outside of the States and Canada. And I agree the 1996 whoops the 2004’s ass in reference to build quality mine has the 722.9 With the notorious conductor plate failure and valve body issues but once you have done it once it should not need to be done again for at least 500,000 miles.

So true. I sold my E55 within one month after buying an S class. The AMG is smoking fast, but the S class is just so smooth and elegant it makes you forget your in traffic.
I own a 2000 S500 AMG Designo. Mint condition bought at auction for $3500. Best car I have ever owned at 4 years in. Everything I learned about my car was online and from my mechanic who drives the exact same car.
This video helped me 4 months ago when I decided to switch from a boring 2010 Mazda3 with 108 000km to a 2003 S430 4Matic that had 220 000km. I will never regret it. Not only did it completely change my driving experience, but it also brought back the passion I had for cars when I was a kid. Now I'm about to take a course in mechanics and I'm looking forward to start my own garage. I love it ! Thanks for your help man, I'm not even exaggerating when I say I would probably not be where I am now if it wasn't for this video.
I just purchased a 2008 S550 with 59,000 miles on the clock for $15,000. Just did the spark plugs, dealer paid for and replaced right strut (aftermarket), calibrated the suspension, serviced the transmission, flushed the brake fluid and changed all filters. All in $1,264.72 from my local Indy.
Because your video I bought an S500 and I have never been happier in my life I'm going on two years of ownership and have spent less than $2,000 in repairs and service
@@DanielKon15 it's the truth you were a huge influence even tho I got a 2000 s500 I have fallen so in love I'm never going to buy another brand of car again I already love Mercedes but your video gave me the confidence to take the plunge
Went and bought my first Mercedes-Benz after watching this video, I went for the 04 CLK320 a lot more reliable, economical and in my opinion more stylish. Thanks for the video homes from Santa Ana, Orange County California U.S.A.
I've owned a 04 w220 s 350 for three yrs and its absolutely brilliant all that this man says. The best video I've ever seen for the above car. From Dublin 🇮🇪
Hey! I have a white 2003 S430 4-Matic! I have nothing but positive things to say about these cars! I ABSOLUTELY love mine. Shes a tank in the snow and fun to drive. I have 135,000 miles on mine right now.
@@RGMX92 I have a 2003 S430 4Matic as well, best car I ever had. Since I got it, I didn't have to replace anything major. Aside from the Airmatic issue, it's basically just sensors that wear over time and some normal wear and tear. The only big replacement I did was the headlight bulbs that I converted to LEDs, and it was purely for aesthetic.
@SMOG are you a DIYer ? Because if so you could have saved thousands of dollars here using the dealer machine called STAR Diagnosis System (or SDS). If I'm right, you replaced ALL the suspension components, but I think it is a nonsense. "If it's not broken, don't fix it".
Great video. Great advice all around! Patience is key when buying one of these. They always look nice. I bought a 2005 S430 4Matic this week. Has 90K mi on it. Its a granite blue. Such a nice color. I have to replace the HVAC blower motor. I took it to the Mercedes dealer that serviced it over its life prior and had all the oils changed, trans service/diffs/transfer case/oil. Then today I did the spark plugs (all 16 of them) and cleaned out the reed valve. I also drilled a second hole in the valve to prevent issues with water. Interior of this car was basically untouched. It was owned by an older person. Apparently this car was parked in a forest before I got it. My air suspension is fine and the car runs so nice. Its a second car for me. I love it.
I love my 2000 s430 . in my last 10 years of ownership I have spent under 2000 in repairs. of course that's not including consumables like brake pads and oil changes.
These are great cars. I bought one from an older German man meticulously maintained. Although I only drive it on weekends in 3 years only routine maintenance. Tires, driver control module went out, tape adapter broke. All minor things that anyone who's ever enjoyed a classic car would know are routine to fix. I look at my Benz like my cousins look at their old school muscle cars. These cars if well loved provide a ton of value. The safety tech alone is unbeatable at its price range. Side curtain airbags on a 20 year old car for less then 4k is insane value.
I used to have S500L 2003 with 5 speed gearbox. I used to drive it more than 800KM every Thursday and 800KM every Saturday which are more than 1600 in every weekend.. I drove it till 400K KM and . Then I found that's in 2005 model the gearbox is 7 speed. So I sold it and bought 2005 . I still have it now and it's pass half million KM . It's really comfortable and makes me like driving .
I have a 2003 cl600 biturbo with the 5 speed box. to be honest you can't really notice the gears. I heard it had the 5 speed box rather than the 6,7 or 8 because the 5 was able to handle the power.
Dumb move, everybody knows the 5G was better than the 7G. It could handle more horsepower and was better at not breaking parts, less gears less maintenance. Common knowledge, how a owner does not know these things....
Very good video, thanks alot. You helped me clearing up a lot of questions and I finally decided to buy a W220 myself. I got a well maintenanced pre facelift 320 from '00 with 180.000km and I own it for a month now. Had some small repairs to do and I will have to remove some rust, but it rides like a charm and I love it. I've been driving about 3.000km now and it makes me smile every time I sit on the drivers seat. It consumes about 11l/100km, but I guess it's okay if you consider the advantages of the car. Thanks alot for this video dude
This is by far, the best video I've seen about the Mercedes W220. I bought one for my girlfriend, after testing that air ride, i'm looking to buy one for myself too hopeuflly a S600 I was afraid of the issues I could encounter with it but man, your video is sooo inspiring. I'm from Canada too and I used to work in Burlington so I know Oakville pretty well and their dealer ship. Back in the days, there was a garage near the MB dealership that specialised in Mercedes Benz, and man that guy was just a gold mind of knowledge and how to fix things quickly and not too expensive. Since I moved to MTL i've lost contact with him and honestly that's why I stopped buying Mercedes Benz, but I'm slowly getting the hitch again after driving my girlfriend S430, and your video have really boost my confidence on buying one. Thank you very much
I had my eyes set on a C55, after college but you reignited my love for these old S-Classes and comforted my fears about some of the issues they have. The choice is going to even harder.
I’ve had my 2003 S500 4Matic for 3 years and it has been great Ive had some suspension work done and I did have a battery drain issue. Other than this is been fantastic. Great video.
@@lostnmusiqueyes actually. It turned out to be the trunk release handle. Bought a replacement swapped the key cylinder from the broken one to the replacement and no more drain.
because Bruno Sacco designed them, italian designer!!today models are garbage and ugly and cheap looking because they have shit designers, korean designers and slovenian designers....
For the Mercedes headlight issue with the bulbs dying quickly, you should upgrade to LED bulbs with the attached error code eliminating converter box. I upgraded and it stopped from bulbs blowing out frequently. Its actually been a year since the upgraded and no issues in my 2006 R500.
Only downside of LED bulbs is cold weather where the headlights can have snow buildup but without the heat generated from HID or Halogen it will not melt.
Oh my god I literally just sat through this whole video of yours. Well done my man. Well done. Lol enjoyed every minute of the video. I have always wanted to get my mother a Mercedes Benz for her ride in luxury and true comfort. And this video just proves my instincts. Thank you.
Great video. I bought a W220 S430 for $3999 from a the first owner. A wealthy German man. He had stacks & stacks of records. It came with beautiful sheep skin covers, seats are mint under neath Aside from the 109k the car looks, smells and feels brand new. He replaced the transmission and airmatic suspension and updated the front and rear lights right before I bought it, at San Rafael Mercedes. Most important I bought this car for my long freeway trips. I also own a new Prius but do not like driving it on the freeway. If you can get a well taken care of S class, but it. You will never find a safer more well crafted vehicle at this price point.
Wow! amazing video for us Benz-lovers! I had so much fun watching it and I learn so many new things, thanks Daniel!, Now the W220 seems so much better than its reputation:). I own a 500 SL R129 1993 in mint condition, its such a joy to own and drive but I need a car for more regular use, and of course in winter time. I will look for a W220! Merry Christmas! Greetings from Sweden
I think your autocorrect kicked in....the word you meant to spell was BULLSHIT, right? Autocorrect won't let you type it that way because it is actually two words.....so yes, it's spelled BULL SHIT, but we all know what you meant ; )

Great video ! I currently have a 99 W140, very interesting to see the other side of this vehicle. Everyone always gives the w220 a bad rap with the suspension. Glad to hear you are doing very well with it!
I Bought my S430 for about 5500 in excellent condition just a few small blemishes and it performs beautifully. For my first Mercedes seeing it value go up just brings such delight to my soull.......
You are fantastic and informative. I have a 1999 S320 V6 (which is strange because all the parts catalogues only list from 2000), but I'm in Australia and it is a gorgeous car purchased for $2500aud. I'm happy with it and thank you for the video.
Awesome vid! I just bought a 2001 cl55amg (basically an s class coupe) for $8000 US. Brilliant cars. I was sceptical about repairs and did extensive research and found great vids on just about everything, so if you're a good home mechanic I say do it! So far no repairs on mine, knock on wood.
car was a one owner vehicle and very well maintained by the owner. car was serviced at dealer and I have all the service records from new. Its my winter car, so far so good. great product
Excellent video. I've been telling people this for years that proper maintenance (and preventative maintenance) as well as buying the right car are essential for an enjoyable car ownership experience. Sadly too many people drop money on a cheap (aka neglected and worn) Mercedes and then bitch about problems that pop up. There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes - and going to the wrong mechanic$$$ who can't work on these cars. The W220 in particular should only be serviced by a qualified mechanic, not Joe's Garage around the corner.
Christian W Precisely what I have learned as well. The best mechanic that I know is not employed by Mercedes Benz, but that runs a small business for many many years and ONLY works on Mercs. Hey, that rhymes lol. A dearlership or equivalent prepurchase inspection is money very well spent. Obviously you would go over everything you can first. Also, as in my case just because the vehicle had very low klms, does NOT mean it does not need an inspection....I learnt the HARD WAY. However I love my S350L now. It really gets the best of care as well.
Hi Daniel, I agree with newton raymond and his comment. Your observations are spot-on and with good detail. You emphasize all the right things!! Except one thing......when you open the car door, you do not see 'chrome", you see polished aluminum. Today, the only 'chrome' you will see on cars is either a shiny vinyl wrap, or polished aluminum. It may be highly polished, but real chrome went out and off the market back in the '70's. You may be able to see yourself in the reflection.......still polished aluminum. All it really is minutia. Great video, with great information.
Really enjoyed your video. Finally someone who knows what he's talking about. I am a huge fan of the W140, but gotta say your Mopf(facelift) W220 looks quite good as well. ;)
one the best precise videos i have seen in my life ........hey I'm an Engineer but never thought u would make it that simple smart and easy this way ....i'm unable to explain just GOOD WORK
He kind of over simplified it. Lol mine had that water drainage issue and the repair was like $6000 at the dealer because i don't know anyone who can do it
Perpetual, buy one. I put US$8,000 aside for it. After two months of checking my local market, I found an S class that had been maintained exclusively at the local dealership and serviced several times a year. No accidents. One owner. US$6,000. Pre-purchase inspection revealed ~$1,500 in mandatory work. I talked him down to $5,500, paid cash, and had the work done. Then, I put in an android 8 head unit, back up camera, and DVR.
Great video, but I think you are sugarcoating things a bit, while they generally have solid engines and transmissions they can be money pits in several ares. For whatever reason rubber parts like suspension bushings and motor mounts that are labor intensive to fix are pretty much par for the course when you own an older Mercedes. There are also computers and sub-modules that are easy to replace, but expensive to buy that will fail in these older cars. Many of these cars for whatever reason tend spout oil leaks that you either must live with (you can for awhile) or labor intensive work to replace the seals and gaskets. I almost forgot to mention issues with the air $suspension. There is a reason why the price on these older cars is so low even when the vehicle still looks modern and has been well cared for and that is maintaining these things is not cheap.
Unless you do your own repairs and maintenance, owning can be expensive. When the dealer wants $500 for a spark plug change when you can get the parts for under $100, $300 to replace the trunk struts ($30 in parts), and $1000 for brakes and rotors, you will eat up any savings fast. However, when you can do all that for under $250 in parts and your own labor, they are a great buy. (Warning!!! You need a Mercedes specific scan tool to disable the SBC (brake controller) before working on your brakes. iCarsoft MB II for $150 will do the trick and pays for itself very quickly.)
Jetta Red - usually unplugging the fuse or just disconnecting the batteries is enough to work on the brakes. I’ve never had an issue on the 8 different MB’s I’ve owned over the years, both AMG and non-AMG models. But owning a scan tool like that is a good idea either way, no doubt.
@@Foxtechconsultants that is soooo damn funny to read about "brake controllers" and "disconnect the battery for replacing break pads"... when owning W126.
Amazing video I have a s class w220 I have had 2001 and now 2003 I must say the 2003 is way reliable and more better quality hope this helps with people buying s class
@SMOG someone trying to sell me a s500 for 3500 $ yea i heard the air suspension $$$$ that's the mean reason why i don't want to but it .then i saw a s550 2008 for only 7800 $ grab my attention those car use to 80,000 back then 🤔
Juan Romo I ended up trading it, car had 230k, was purchased with 20k miles. Never had any major engine or transmission problem. Besides maintenance, I had the trans fluid changed once.
I have a friend whom had a S 430 and once the front airbags went out he got rid of it! Overall hit the nail on the head with talking points! Gud video, and informative!
Playing the odds with a s class. I have the Lexus LS430 and like the odds in my favour that it is going to last and not cost me a arm and a leg to fix.
Lots of good info about the W220. I disagree on the hack-job fixes, though. Do yourself a favor and stop watching Scotty Kilmer. He's the kind of guy who thinks it's OK to fix a blown head gasket with a bottle of mystery goo. These are Mercedes-Benz automobiles and they should be maintained accordingly.
Lol or the S600 that had a radiator tube fixed with JBweld instead of just replacing the tube. That caused the engine to overheat which is why they sold it. Hoovies bought that and fixed it up.
Way too expensive to maintain these complicated unrealizable cars well. Had a 93 S500 a terrible money pit. More expensive failures in 50k than all other cars I've owned combined in 40 years and 1.5 million miles. A complete time-consuming frustrating disappointment.
You don't listen to scotty vary well I've noticed he's right most of the time and he said Mercedes-Benz are the best cars but they just cost too much and he's right the guy on this video is way off
Great video, thank you for sharing, very informative and to the point, well done! I just love the comfort and quality of this car. I have the S430, YM 2002. It really shines on the autobahn at 200 km/h like no other car I have owned.
S430 has always been the most elegant car ever made in history in my mind. However, I got a Lexus LS430 as my first car due to its impeccable reliability. Basic maintenance is all you need. No surprise repair bills.
Wow! You inspired me to look for cars that cost well over what I can afford if I am buying brand new! I have always been a Merc S class lover! Great video.
Really well done video-i've always wondered about the cost of ownership for used luxury vehicles, and am fascinated when i see vehicles like this for such a low price. Great editing too...
150.00 for an oil change??????? DUDE!!!!! get under that damn thing ,loosen the drain plug and screw on an oil filter!!! 25.00 for 5 qarts fullsynthetic 30 for 6 quarts and no more than 10.00 for an oil filter GEEZ!
It's 7.5 litres of Mobil 1 0W40 and the oil is suctioned out of the dip stick tube (though there isn't really a dip stick in it). The filter is on top of the engine and is a cartridge replacement (still it should be only $10 or less), but go with either Mann or Hengst fleece filter. But...if you get the oil at Walmart, it should still cost about $30-$35.
150 is steep, it can be done lower with high quality oil and filter. My 2001 E55 held nearly 9 quarts of 0w40 and a synthetic mobil1 filter. I would buy 2 5 quart jugs and one filter, it would run me about 75 dollars.
Great video, very entertaining! Anyone with a pulse would fall in love with this car, but man, despite all the great things about it, it's just more trouble than it's worth. To own a car like this, you'd have to be retired, and/or have endless amounts of free time to putter around the Internet trying to figure out what's wrong with the car every time you have an issue. If you have a 40hr/week job, you don't have time to own a car like this. I used to have a 2007 MINI Cooper, and I sold it after only a year and a half because there were so many issues with it, it was being fixed more than it was on the road. It was a great car....WHEN IT WORKED, which was generally never. I got tired of having to Google the problems and then trying to find a shop that would/could do the work. My Godfather had a 7 Series BMW...same story. Had a coolant pipe issue- dealer quoted him like 12 grand to fix, he had to get on the Internet and this shop in California engineered a workaround for like under 2 grand. He had to order the part and have it shipped here, and then showed the TH-cam video to a mechanic who was able to do it. What a headache, and he was without the car for like a week while they did the work. If you REALLY can't live without German engineering, your best bet is to lease a new one. Drive it 3 years, have all the maintenance and repair costs 100% covered, and then give it back- let it be someone else's problem. At some point you've gotta decide is me looking fly in this whip worth me having to spend every waking hour worrying about whether or not this car is going to actually get me to my destination without either 1 ) stranding me roadside or 2 ) draining my 401K. Buy a Lexus, Acura, or Volvo.
you do realize ....scotty....ABSOLUTELY,,VEHEMENTLY,,UTTERLY,,,, HATES MB with every ounce of energy and will do so even after hes dead. He will put it on his tombstone
Most people are scared because of the maintenance. If they're really going for that cheap where you're at and they're not suffering from a major mechanical problem, you could probably flip them for profit.
@@channell11 that's what I do. I just picked one up 2months ago at first I was scared as hell to even drive it lol 😂 now I DRIVE it. Paid $2250 selling for $5000 lol 😂 at the dealers they are still up to 7k to 8K I'm not 🚫 cheaping out on my price because the others are doing monkey see monkey do

@@tommydo961 Camry is better for elderly and women or if you live in a far village that nearby mechanics are unprofessional otherwise if you know someone who is a Mercedes specialist that is great. After this experience I realized that bmw is a real money pit and less reliable than mercedes.but for young men it is okay to have a Mercedes because they have more ability to perform maintenance and researches. And every brand has its pros and cons. Mercedes is more expensive to maintain but in return, it is safer and higher quality ride than even Lexus. Airmatic ?
Im about to buy one too i use to have a bmw 530i 04 but im going to benz s class 500
I love it.
Very nice video. Got this car for 2 years. This car never let me down. Drove 2x around the whole europe. Done only basic service. W220 320 CDI 2005
I love my 2000 s430 . in my last 10 years of ownership I have spent under 2000 in repairs. of course that's not including consumables like brake pads and oil changes.
Stellar production. I don't even own an S class nor have I ever wanted to, but I still watched every second.
Dude this video rocks!!
Im buying one from 1999 probably tomorrow.
I could listen to this guy talk all day. Absolutely excellent video.
Had mine for 4 years so far. It refuses to die. It just keeps going. And going. And going.
How many miles
Thank you very much
Thnx!
Love to hear it.
I'm curious if you still remember the name of that garage?
Best review of a W220, at least for me.
I had my eyes set on a C55, after college but you reignited my love for these old S-Classes and comforted my fears about some of the issues they have. The choice is going to even harder.
Same predicament I am in! C55 amg or s430 amg?
Love this video. And in a way makes me feel like I’m not completely mad when I talk to my S430
I’ve had my 2003 S500 4Matic for 3 years and it has been great Ive had some suspension work done and I did have a battery drain issue. Other than this is been fantastic. Great video.
Ricardo, did you figure out cause of battery drain?
@@lostnmusiqueyes actually. It turned out to be the trunk release handle. Bought a replacement swapped the key cylinder from the broken one to the replacement and no more drain.

i think w221 is well designed
This is the best car review video ever made. Incredibly well documented, easy to follow. Thank you so much!
Yes have 3 benz w203 and 2 w220 with this cars you dont wanted to go fast and its easy to fix them
Oh my god I literally just sat through this whole video of yours. Well done my man. Well done. Lol enjoyed every minute of the video. I have always wanted to get my mother a Mercedes Benz for her ride in luxury and true comfort. And this video just proves my instincts. Thank you.
Why can't all true running costs videos be like this. Very informative

I absolutely love the S-Class, I have a 99 S-420 and aside for gas she is relatively low maintenance.

Duuude you really deserve a lot more subscribers. Keep up the good work!!
Well done Dan.. You've ticked all the boxes. I'll be telling all my friends to check your presentation out. Cheers, Jon...

I enjoy your channel.
He kind of over simplified it. Lol mine had that water drainage issue and the repair was like $6000 at the dealer because i don't know anyone who can do it
But despite the shady dealers it's an awesome car. Best ride. Super powerful. Feels like a bank vault. It's just not simple ownership at all
Perpetual, buy one.
@@SaintNobody where did you buy your head unit ?
One of the best down to earth car assessments i have seen.

Just bought 8 liter of Mobil1 for $90 Canadian and filter for $20. This is how expensive things are in Canada dude!
Jetta Red Nah, it has a traditional oil pan with a drain plug...
th-cam.com/video/qiHp18HzLsU/w-d-xo.html
Canada is.
Miami is wonderful. Wish I was there.

@@tommydo961
Camry is better for elderly and women or if you live in a far village that nearby mechanics are unprofessional otherwise if you know someone who is a Mercedes specialist that is great. So it is not a money waste or pit as Scotty killer says because the expensive repairs he mentioned can be avoided.
