I have a 2004 S430 designo Silver Edition. Just rolled over 200k miles, still on fully functioning air suspension with no issues. I love mine, they’re great cars, and this coming from someone who wasn’t even that fond of the W220 prior to owning haha. Drive it everyday, cooled seats on and AC blasting. Easy to work on and “relatively” cheap to maintain.

My s320 petrol has 387000 miles and it runs as smooth as new. You can get high quality parts for cheap and basically every single malfunction is documented somewhere on the internet. It costs me around 5-600$ a year to keep it running.

  • @Rusty3ghz
    @Rusty3ghz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

A few years ago my grandpa used to have a S500 of this era. Great car, especially the airmatic was exceptionally comfortable (it's somewhat the point of an S-Class, so it really would be worth fixing yours). It even had a fridge behind the middle rear seat, really fancy. But: reliability was mediocre, with prices for spare parts being quite high, even over here in Germany. As it got older he replaced it with a newer, well equipped E350 which seems to be a lot more reliable. He still misses that S-Class tho :D
I also have to say that you were quite brave to go into that trunk. On my grandpas S-Class there was one time where he wanted to open the trunk and it totally jammed. He had to bring it to a dealership to get the trunk opened and the lock replaced. Considering you can't even fold down the rear seats this could have been quite a problem if someone would have been inside the trunk at that time.

The W220 is one of my favorite S Classes because they're much lighter than the previous generations. Better yet AMG models with the ABC system means no body roll which is very impressive for a 2 ton vehicle.

JR, I have had a 2004 S350 (V6 3.7 litre) for 14 years and 230,000km. For the last few years I have been expecting a catastrophic component failure of some sort, and would have said "thank you faithful servant" and been quite happy to junk it... nope, and apart from front struts 9 years ago and motor/transmission mounts last month ($1k), it has only had tyres/batteries/scheduled servicing. Everything still works, and it eats hundreds of Australian km's on the highway with remarkably-good fuel economy (city mpg: not so good!) and superb comfort in scorching temperatures.

Or replace the complete system with springs from “strut masters” for under a grand. That S430 is legit though, probably needs a timing chain tensioner or low on oil from that nasty off throttle noise... And it's probably pulling air in via those trashed valve cover gaskets given how it sounded hood up hot idle?

Of course the S class is the best car on the road! I'm a completely unbiased observer... I own a 2003 S500L that looks a lot like yours with only 51,000km on the clock (ie 30k miles) that's in near mint condition. Bought a little over a year ago for around USD 4,500. But that's in Hong Kong, where there's not much of a market for cars like this once they're 15 years old. I look forward to seeing what you do with it... I've replaced a bunch of bits on mine - including the screen in the infotainment system which looked like yours when I got it (there are replacements from Aliexpress for about USD 150, and they're not too fiddly to swap out), headrest releases (mine had failed; it's a bit of work to get to); headlamp washers; etc.

p.s. one advantage of a Mercedes is that you can always source the replacement parts - although at a price. MB stand behind their products.

JR trapped in Mercedes trunk, calls 911. Dispatch operator asks where he's located. Locomotive sounds in background. JR replies, "I think I am on the midnight train to Georgia!" LOL. Great find on the Mercedes! Can't wait to see this project.

I have two W220s currently and have had 2 others prior. Fantastic cars. Yours is really base and in my opinion, if you're gonna buy one of these get one with at least heated and cooled seats. Coilovers ruin them. If you buy an S-class and you want it to ride like one just buy a used set of Arnotts off eBay and you should be golden. Otherwise, you're just ruining the car. The airmatic warning is because of the coil-overs. They probably didn't install a bypass module when they did it so now the car constantly thinks the ADS is malfunctioning. The ADS is interlinked with the presafe function on the car. Your steering wheel is probably feeling heavy also. It should be a very light steering wheel.

Coilovers to fix the Airmatic, you can get a new plastic car key housing from eBay for cheap and that will fix 90% of your problems. On my E-class (which has the same key) debris got in there blocking the IR sensor which prevented the car from starting, so it's good insurance. Also look at a cheap aftermarket head unit to replace the stock one which will give you newer GPS, Car Play, etc; 100% Jake knows what's up with those, and there are plenty out there which will keep the OEM fit and work with the steering wheel buttons. Good luck to the detailers!

  • @daveh2612

That’s a rough one for $2000. It has almost every problem that W220s have. It’s not the best generation for S class but it’s not bad either. Best ones are 04-06 S430 or S500. Least likely to be rusty, facelift with better headlights and taillights, newer nav radio, you want Airmatic not ABC. Black interior is the only color that doesn’t look like crap after years of wearing poorly. Avoid ventilated seats because they tear easily and don’t work well anyways. Heated only is best. Check headlight wiring for cracked insulation. The SRS light is passenger presence sensor mat. LCD failure on 03-06 nav like this one is very common. Fluorescent tube failure on cluster is common. Shifter failures are common. Air lock box failure is common as is vacuum leaks at door actuators. Avoid 4matic if you don’t need it because lots of suspension parts are more expensive. 5 speed trans is more reliable than 7G tronic which was new and optional for 2004.

Does yours have the little black IR on the door handle. If you do then point the tip of the key at it and hold down the unlock and the windows and sunroof will open. To close them press the lock button till the all closes. Also the car should have soft close doors.

The W220 is considered by many to be the worst S-Class but the M113 V8 with the 722.6 automatic transmission is one of the most reliable drivetrains ever.
I should say worst is by interior quality. The W140 S-class and W221 are both much better put together but I think any Mercedes from this era is pretty cool to own. Personally I have a C320 wagon and two 190E Sportlines, my brother has an E500 wagon and a W116 S-Class, my dad has two W123 300Ds, one auto, one 5-speed, and a W124 300D that we converted to 5-speed auto. All awesome cars, even if the interior on my C320 is rivaled by contemporaneous Camrys

My last Mercedes was a 1999 W210 300 Turbodiesel. All electronics broke, I had to replace the Navigation unit due to a leak in the trunk (blup-blup) and finally the 5 speed automatic failed during hauling a camper. I swore: this will be my last Mercedes (apart from the vintage W124 in my storage). And I bought in 2011 a Peugeot 508 SW, which was the right choice! Very reliable (apart from new injectors after 165.000 km), >20 km/litre (1.6 eHDI) and still looking like new after 10 years! Never a Mercedes again!

Best £460 car I have ever owned even if it is only an early S280. (pic sent to your insta). 75k miles, 21 years old and everything works😎
That silver plate in the trunk should be under the front passenger carpet and that ecu is probably part of the Airmatic delete🤦‍♂️Not sure that the ML/GL wheels do the look and favours. It's actually a pretty easier car to wrench on though (definitely not a VAG product 😂) Pelican Parts and FCP Euro for the bits. And see if you can get a complete S600 interior from J&J🤔 even the extra wood trim makes a nice upgrade. Parking brake handle is either broken or disconnected... Two phillips screws to remove it and the problem will be obvious... The cable tension should hold the handle in.
