    I too moved to Pattaya in 2006 at the age of 52. After 17 years here, it's still the best decision I ever made. I lost my home in Hurricane Katrina so I had nothing to pack!

    Fair play to you man you are living the dream. I first went Thailand in 89 and I've been 40 times since then. I totally get why you are living there. I'll be doing the same in two years when I finish work. It's totally possible to live a brilliant life there on a budget. I've lived on and off there for 3 months at a time. You just control yourself which i find easy to do. Keep enjoying yourself and be happy

    I'm 29 years old and plan to take a few years off of work to enjoy the fruits of my labor. A few months back I stayed in Bangkok and Pattaya for 2 weeks and didn't want to go back to New York. The military was a blessing. The happiest and most content I’ve ever been was when I could pack everything I owned in two duffle bags and a backpack. I could move out of my room completely in under 2-3 hours. I hope to revive that in retirement with two checked medium roller bags and a carry-on.

I was talking to a guy today and he just told me how he decided what he absolutely needed. He looked at it like what would he grab in case of a fire. He basically filled three suitcases and disposed of everything else. I feel for people though that have lifelong collections for instance. I know from personal experience how much emotional attachment there are in belongings. Anyway I wish you good luck, you can do it though.

      I like Hua Hin for the occasional visit. Personally I don't think there's enough things to keep me busy there and prices are quite a bit higher than Pattaya in general. Golf for instance, is probably double and there is only three courses in that area although black mountain for instance is world renowned and probably on many's bucket list.
      You're definitely right about the traffic though in Pattaya. And it seems like it's just getting worse. I hardly drive my truck anymore.

    Loved your video. Please allow me to play devil's advocate. If a person has mobility issues the sidewalks in Pattaya are for crap. I remember seeing a westerner in a wheel chair on Soi Buakhao and feeling so bad for him. He seemed happy but it must have been a struggle for him to get around. Few things in Thailand are ADA compliant!!! Another time on Soi Buakhao a vehicle came close enough to brush the backpack I had slung over my shoulder. I was fine and nothing was damaged but it put a brief scare in me. The nightlife in legendary but what do you do during the day? First couple of visits just walking around was awesome but what do you do with yourself if you're there 10 days? 10 months? There is a RC flying field I'd seen.

    • @MargaritasinParadise
      @MargaritasinParadise  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I doubt Thai's in general even know what ADA is. Up until the recent years pedestrians did not have the right of way. So basically it came down to who was bigger, you or the bus. Even now I think the law is pretty vague considering pedestrians. I think it reads something about a pedestrian has to be in a working crosswalk before a vehicle has to yield right away. You see many times going down the highway an ambulance running lights and sirens and stuck behind traffic that refuses to move out of the way. I don't know how many times I've seen disabled person scooting along on boards or wheelchairs or by whatever means they have available dodging traffic in Thailand. I think they are given about the same respect as someone else that doesn't have that disability and expected to take care of themselves.
      As far as keeping one active I'm pretty busy all the time but I know lots of people that tend to sleep all day or just sitting in there condos and watch movies. Of course I have this TH-cam channel too maintain. I also enjoy golf and other activities. We have a VFW for instance here in Pattaya as well as an American legion. There's lots of other clubs as well for the people that are interested. For the person that's really motivated of course there's snorkeling and scuba diving and the daily beach life. We have islands around us that you can Island hop just on day trips or even go out and spend the night or 10. Lots of other day trips around here as well including visiting the Bridge over the River kwai. Auyuthia is only a two-hour drive from here as well. Really this area is limitless on keeping somebody busy though I hear many times, guys will tell me they have nothing to do. Respectfully, I think they are just lazy because there's too much to do here. I think somebody could do something every day for a month without repeating. Anyway activities are available for the person that wants to go out and look.
      But you're right, the sidewalks are not generally provided for the purposes that most people would think. Many of the sidewalks are used as additional vending space for instance and nobody cares about leaving enough room for people just to walk. Payments broke in many areas and maintenance to fix that is nonexistent. Personally I think sidewalks are not important to the Thai culture but on the other hand neither are roads.
      We have streets and Pattaya that are nicknamed like soi pothole. That name exists for a reason. Nobody wants to fix this street for instance probably because it would shut down all traffic for who knows how long. So the street is riddled with massive holes along its entire stretch and nobody seems to care. When you get into the Esaan areas major roads are no better than goat paths. To the locals, money is better spent on fixing something they need whatever that may be.
      Now the last point is that I absolutely love Thailand. It's so easy to point out the negatives. And unfortunately I don't have the answers or the fixes.
      Have a great day

      That’s a valid point. One of the things I’ve really noticed there are a number of Expats that are wheelchair bound. The wheelchairs have a front wheel creating a trike like motorized chair. I see these chairs motoring down the street at a pretty good pace. Anyway I just mentioned this, as it seems like these guys have almost formed a club of people that are under the same circumstances

    I retired to pattaya in April 2021 at 50. I lasted 9 months. Even with the bars closed I was hooked on thaifriendly and just lost control short timing 7 to 10 girls a week depending on my energy. At that time I was living on 80-90k baht a month.
    After spending a month on Koh Phangan I had rejuvenated energy and realised Pattaya full time was destructive to my energy and I had to move out. Not because of money. I earn about 120k a month so was spending well below this, but because there's nothing else in Pattaya than bars and girls, I needed to find balance.
    I now live in bang saray and spend alot of time on Sai kaew or Nang ram beach. I do a 2 hour walk in the jungle in the navy reserve most mornings. I have 1 gik who visits me weekly in bang saray and then I spend 1 night a week in Pattaya having 2 short times and a 3 hour happy ending massage before riding back to bang saray.
    I have 5 shots in 3 days and then rejuvenate my energy over the next 4 to go like a 19yo again.
    I still spend about the same money as I hit gogos for the perve and buy lady drinks as an extra to my freelancers

    Hi. I enjoy your videos. Your encouragement about retiring early in Thailand is great. I am from the US and since you are as well maybe you can answer a few questions for me. I'm looking to retire in Thailand, but I have a few things holding me back. I have no family left in the US.
    1. How do you get your US taxes completed while living in Thailand?
    2. What do you do about mail coming to you in the US after you move to Thailand?
    3. I know you enjoy own doing your cooking. I would be doing that as well. Do you find the fruits and vegetables are fine to eat from the supermarket on a regular basis?
    4. Do you feel comfortable transferring money from a US bank to a Thailand bank?
    5. When you cook can you use the tap water to clean your food or do you need to use bottled water?
    Any answers you can give to my questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. J...

      I’m glad to help. I’m going to answer these questions in order that you gave them to me, 1. There are a couple options to use here. Are use TurboTax to complete my taxes which include a small business, and I file all of them online. If you’re a veteran, There is also a VFW and an American legion post located here in Pattaya, both of which have service representatives that help people file their taxes.

    • @MargaritasinParadise
      @MargaritasinParadise  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      2. Personally, I think you need to have a friend that you trust that will allow you to use their address for the really important stuff. As far as the government is concerned, they have my Thai address. Such as my taxes are all filed using my Thai address. I also use Escapees RV club. They have a option online to sign up with for approximately $25 a year to forward all your mail. They even give you the option to sort your mail and trash all the junk mail. Of course I tried to sign up for as many things electronically delivered as possible.

    • @MargaritasinParadise
      @MargaritasinParadise  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      2. The address is a tricky issue. Basically you need to have a US address for all US banking accounts. Are use my Escapees RV club as an address out of Florida. They forward all my actual mail to my father in Illinois my father than decides what’s important enough to send me. In all honesty, most things associated with the government will send packages to you through the normal mail system to wherever you’re at.

      Several great points here. Everybody’s has different goals set for their future. Friends are a major point. I have friends that I’ve known all my life and now that I’m living abroad, I probably talk to them more than I ever have especially with things like FaceTime and video chat. A good example is at one point in my life. I probably only talk to my father once a month but now we talk at least every week using a video chat. I feel like I see him more now than I have in the last 10 years. The same goes for many of my friends. Most of my friends are so happy because they can see that I’ve restarted my life my lifelong friends all knew that I was stuck and I wanted something different maybe something more. Now I cannot tell you how many of those like long friends have traveled here to visit.
      Family is everything , over the years my family has been shrinking and now really I’m down to having only my father and two sisters. As I stated earlier, I feel like I have became closer to my father since living here. As far as my sisters are concerned, they have their lives, and we try to talk as often as we can. I was never fortunate enough to have my own children, so I don’t know what my circumstances would’ve been, if I would’ve ever been blessed with children, or even grandchildren.
      Money is always a major factor. Things like exchange rates change constantly, I have friends here that almost play an exchange rate game. I love hearing about the good old days when exchange rates were super high. I’ve been coming here since 1987, and in all honesty, today’s rates are the best that I remember. Of course, that could be telling you something about my age or even possibly my memory. Ha ha ha. One of the things to keep in mind that when you compare the price of a bottle of Coca-Cola at a convenience store. In the USA that same bottle probably gonna cost $2.67, here the same bottle cost $0.70. Yesterday I finished with a series of three root canals over the last month. The cost here was approximately $600. In the USA, $2500+
      As far as visitors go, I literally have friends here all year long. I travel as much as I can with them and even volunteer my truck for their use when it’s available. I look forward to friends coming and doing as many things as I can with them while they’re here.
      I wanted to mention to you, I love your perspective and definitely appreciate you bringing up these great points It’s not an easy situation for most people to change. My change, was for the good. I hope that if you ever decide to make a change, that it’s even better than mine. Thanks again.

    Subjects. Maybe you could pay a young
    Beautiful Thai interpreter to make the
    Interview more insightful. And let the
    Interviewee do 90% of the talking.
    Thx, Mark

      All great ideas, I’ve already made notes. I actually do have a Thai lady that I’m going to do it interview with him. Fortunately, she can speak English. Thanks for your comment.

    Sorry but an agency is not an extra 1000B. It cost 2000B if you do a VISA yourself, an agent may charge 30,000B.
    One thing you must have is health/medical insurance which about 5,000B a month.
    Living on $1000 a month you are at risk of the 'what if' or unexpected payments.
    I've living in Thailand for over 10 years and I would never recommend anyone to live here if they do not have some sort of back up or if you are comfortable.

      Yes correct visa agents 30-50,000 tb year one , good to have a lump sum available even if you do have insurance. 90% of my money is in uk. I did not want to work on for say 3/4 years and miss out on coming here. All my family have passed away so nothing at home for me to fall back on or go back to. Some say I’m taking a risk here. But if I split with my gf I would stay in the country , but maybe move away to the north or the beaches in south ..

      I'm going to save the meat of the visa issue for a video. The 1000 baht fee was something I just said as an option. Many fees agents charge are much less like 90 day reporting for 300 baht. ( I feel like, I'm opening a can of worms here) I just picked up my visa yesterday. The actual cost for me was 13,500 baht. I also, went with the multiple entry stamp which was another 4000 baht. A month, I returned from the Philippines. I went to my agent for 24 Immigration reporting, that cost me 200 baht. Visa agents have saved me countless hours over the last 17 years. But your right, fees vary depending on the service they offer. Another thing, I pays to look around 1st Class Visa Runs have always treated me great.

      Additionally, I would never want to live on $1K a month. I just know people who do it. I think if that's all you have, then you have no choice.

      The lump sum is definitely essential for people with abroad insurance and need to prepay and file later.

      It was a big part of my life. It’s funny how when I first started it was no questions asked initiative when it came to giving orders by the time I retired, we had to be careful, not hurt too many feelings. Hahaha

    You cannot live there on 1000 USD per month, it would be a miserable life.

      My friend lives alone, he exercises on the beach daily and just plain spends most of his time there. He doesn't drink alcohol. He eats 100% Thai food off the streets. This guy is a happy man. Everyone has different lifestyles. Personally I couldn't do it but I have a different lifestyle.

      I wouldnt want to live on $1000 a month, but $1000 a month would be less miserable in Thailand than the US or UK. Its all about perspective. If you are working and making $10,000 a month, and used to living on that, and your retirement provision will only give you $1000/month then that would be tough. But if you are in retirement scratching by on $1000/mth in the US, then being in Thailand wouldnt be that miserable.
