Great show. I'm a fan of decoction mashing. You guys have a lot of talent and it all shows on your channel. I always learn a lot about brewing from you without wading through too much waffle. Thanks for your generosity.
Nice one! Great to see more realistic brew day videos on youtube. Helps to know I'm not the only one who's brew days occasionally turn into a dog's breakfast. I've been trying to work up the courage to attempt a decoction mash Marzen myself for a while now. I might have to invest in one of those portable induction hot plates, seem to do the trick nicely for you there.
Hahaha cheers mate, mistakes are all apart of the journey we think they should always be included! And honestly go for it, it was a massive pain but a very fun learning experience, and you could even just use ur kitchen hot plates
Ah man what a ballache. I don't think I'll ever bother with a decoction mash for this reason 😂 glad it turned out okay though, be keen to see it when it's fully clarified 🍻
Haha yeah it was a painful brew day! I think in the end it was worth it for the learnings though, but yes next year I’ll actually do this in march so when Oktoberfest rolls around it will be good to go
Just for information, so that the name of the hop is easier to remember, Hallertau is one of the largest hop-growing areas in the world after which the hop is named and is located in Germany. As always, nice video, I would like to see a video how you fill and clean the big tank? cheers from switzerland
Ahhh yes that makes sense cheers! Oh yeah we can definitely do that, we do have a video on how to clean and sanitise equipment but we can also do one on the tanks th-cam.com/video/NZj2RW79rjc/w-d-xo.html
Love your commentary and self depreciation. Thanks for the video. I admit I do not "get" the iGulu . I guess its for peeps that dont want the work. But thats half the fun to me.
Cheers dude hahaha yeah we keep all our mistakes in because it’s all apart of the process! Yeah the igulu I see more as an entry to the world of brewing, for those who’ve never done it before and want an easy way to get started with a solid result
Jumping in before I watch the entirety, I am really hoping that false bottom works, the main thing stopping me decoct is the idea of getting that "coffee the apprentice made and burnt the ever loving shit out of it" flavour you get too much of in bad dark beers [edit] To quote Darth Vader in episode 3 "NOOOoooooooOOOOoooooOOOOooo" [editception] Pressure fermenting is the absolute greatest thing since cat memes though imo, last summer I was knocking out crystal clear, super clean lagers in no time flat with 34/70 under it's own pressure, i.e. starting it at room pressure but setting the spunding valve to ramp itself up to around 15 psi with no active cooling, just had the fermenter inside.
Hahahaha yeah the false bottom disappointed us too 😂 I was really banking on that being a cheat code to decoction mashing! But absolutely agree, pressure fermenting is an absolute godsend, especially in countries like Australia
@@flyingwombattv Keep your head up and push on mate. 35 years later, I'm still capable of fucking up an easy brew day. Sounds like you managed a great beer in the end.

Cheers dude! We appreciate it! And glad to know you are getting something out of it, makes it all worth it for us
I just learnt about decoction mashing, tried it as soon as I could and failed miserably... Cannot wait to try again, it was soooooo fun.
Hahaha yeah it’s an effort and a big learning curve as we discovered! But the results are pretty cool

If you stir the mash as you doing a milkshake don't expect to get a clear beer.
Oh yeah Dw we weren’t expecting this to clear up any time soon! There’s a reason these are made in march hahaha

Using a false bottom in a decoction was a mistake.
Straight on the fire and stir like a MF'er to keep it moving. Can't stir through that false bottom.
Yuuuuup! We definitely learned that the hard way! Hahaha
