YES - in fact all the little quiet moments and small pleasures the characters have between the horror - watching the anime before reading the manga I thought that was a huge point of Chainsaw man - the little things that make us feel bliss and mean something - which is still there a little in the manga but felt way more present of a theme in the anime.

Chainsaw Man animation does this thing where it combines 2d and 3d animation in a way that stands out from most anime. It's like you can tell the CGI animation is there, but instead of it coming off distracting it actually kinda blends well during the fast paced action scenes. Denji's devil form is 50% CG and it's just a unique aesthetic that I really vibe with.

I’m sad. Didn’t know the chainsaw man director of season 1 left. I really liked the cinematic direction chainsawman season 1 had. It made it feel more like a fresh new experience than another shounen out of japan. With some parts seeming more like I was watching a movie. Every now and then it’s nice to take a break from the monotony of everyday japan. But his mistake was trying it in a country that hates change and still uses fax machines from the 1970s. Several of my friends who don’t even watch anime saw chainsawman because of that direction it took with the cinematography making it seem more familiar to western audiences.

Given the fact that most studios can’t pull off satisfying CGI action scenes, MAPPA really got into risky territory by accepting to readapt AOT’s most crucial season on a tight schedule. And the fact that despite not being as pleasing as if it were done in 2D the animation still SLAMDUNKS when it needs to is impressive to me.

And the Credits is filled with wayyy too many people. Specially for this episode. Showed that Mappa used a shit ton of 2KA, Animation directors and also a lot of outsourcing (as i said they have a lot of connections) for this episode (i assume because of the action and the design). So far, every fear I had about the first part of the anime has come true
Mappa is animating everything. Makes a lot of sense that they’d hold back a lot since jigokuraku just doesn’t have the same impact as csm and jjk
But another reason as to why they’re not going crazy yet is that the first 30something chapters are just a setup. It’s not surprising that the best animation in this series starts exactly the moment the Tensen appear. That’s when the story truly gets good
But the problem is that (as I’ve commented on another video) your average shounen fan has the attention span of a dead squirrel which means that there’s a large number of people who just lost interest because of that slow setup
It’s crazy just how many people are trashing the story
(Which is surprising to me since usually weebs would cry more about the animation)
Either way, everything will be fixed in the second season since the story takes a different turn and introduces a lot more action (and of course that’s when the core thematics of the story appear)

I truly wonder how big their compositing style would've changed, had they animated S4. Would've loved to see Wit S4, with a huge shift in tone.
You can easily change tone without creating a whole new art style, and Mappa's colors, shading, and contrast weren't very good. It was super washed out, and a blurry brown-grey mess of colors, that mis-shaped the character models half the time.

The S4 artstyle is fine, for the key animation. But the color and contrast is washed out, and not pleasing to the eye at all. There's a million different ways it could be fixed, without losing tone. Characters look off-model more times than should be allowed, and that is mostly due to the shading, contrast, and poor color choice, and how they shape the look of the characters in-scene.
It's fine to like how it got darker in S4, it should get darker, and of course any other studio would've adapted similarly. Wit had been adapting their style and colors throughout S1-3 as well, and they too would've adapted to the dramatic change in tone for the 4th season, had they been the ones to adapt it.
I hate the argument that Mappa did "good" because the artstyle they went for is closer to the manga, and that the colors, tone, and atmosphere serves it well, when that is only a half truth.
It could've looked miles better, and i'd advice anyone to educate themselves a bit on compositing.

    1. I think you also need to realize the important of the entire anime staff not just the director (like the animation producer, director of photography, and most importantly freelance animator who participate in the project). The more staff both project shared, the more it will affect each other just like chainsawman and jujutsu kaisen
    2. Jigo does not look bad because they put their resources to jjk season 2, both of these show have a completely different staff working on it from the producer down to the very department it was produced in. What most likely affected its production is both vinland saga and attack on titan since they share the same department and staff member. Mappa simply doesnt care much about jigo production, the schedule is so bad even with the help of veteran in the industry working as an episode director, the final product is still underwhelming at the very best
    3. Chainsaw man future project CANT and WILL not appear until at least 2024/2025 since both csm and jjk have pretty much the same staff and key animator. Why they both share the same staff ? Because both of these show have the same animation producer and similiar connection between staff. Actually, I like how MAPPA handled AOT final season in terms of CGI usage and less saturated color scheme. While I still dont necessarily admire CGI, MAPPA managed to make it feel pretty natural, highlighting most stressful scenes with it. Colors wise, I think using less brighted ones fits this season really good, considering things turn out being not that funny anymore.

If we don't consider the titans, MAPPA's CGI is pretty impressive objectively. The CGI buildings, background elements, ships, and the weapons looked super realistic. Not to mention, their camera movements are top notch. I wonder if Wit would've ever managed to achieve MAPPA's level of CGI excellence and realism. In terms of art, MAPPA's a mile above, some scenes were so distorted they looked even more impacting. Both studios have used differing art styles for their respective take on Attack on Titan's adaptation. However, none is objectively better, especially since MAPPA's muted colors are perfect to depict the all-out war everyone finds themselves in during Season 4. As a result, MAPPA's darker art style is perfect to show the horrors of war. Wit Studio's brighter colors could've possibly looked out of place during this arc, so this change was ultimately for the better. In terms of lighting, MAPPA kinda messed up part 1, but part 2 and 3 looked amazing in my eyes.

    First off, really great vid
And as for CSM, I doubt it would have had as big of an effect because it's just not as accessible for most audiences anyway with how weird some aspects of it can be ( prime example would be most of EP 7 lol )
Anyway, I've read the manga and I absolutely loved the anime, though I really disagree with the anime being different from the manga, especially in terms of pacing.
In fact, a lot of the hate the show got just sounded more like the show wasn't the same as people's headcanons of what it should be lol.

    • @LoreCatan
      @LoreCatan ปีที่แล้ว +5

I agree honestly. Another complaint I heard for why people didn't like CSM was because all the characters were selfish and self-centered and there was no comradery at all; So again, I can see how this wouldn't be accessible to most audiences, especially since CSM is more dark and gritty than most shonen people like to watch.
Most shonen have moments of wholesomeness, selflessness, found family and the undying hope the good always wins in the end, which doesn't really happen in CSM. That doesn't mean there's no angst or darkness in regular shonen, but it always comes back around to these emotions/tropes, this is why most people come back to this genre. Compared to CSM, Jujutsu Kaisen is like taking a nice stroll in the park, and that shit gets dark.
I mean, JJK literally started with Yuuji's grandfather telling him to help as many people as he can so he won't die alone, and CSM started with Denji "transferring ownership" from the Yakuza to Makima through rebirth. Granted, the Pochita scene was pretty wholesome, but I can totally understand why some people would like one more than the other based on themes alone. I think it was only a surprise to MAPPA because they spent so much time, effort and money into making 12 EDs and it still didn't top JJK, which granted, is kind of surprising when put that way.
I also think the CGI thing is dumb, and will always be dumb. Chainsaw Man looked great, Attack on Titan looked great. I know we all love a well-animated fight scene, but honestly I would rather they use CGI to reach the deadline instead of overworking their most talented animators and burning them out, that would be tragic.

I have to say the thing with MAPPA is not just their insane team never getting to see their family but is also the shows they pick, the shows they pick are all very dark straying from norms of anime and manga and then they add their own new touch of flare to it sparking it into a worldwide sensation. Almost all of the shows they animate have become sensational, to name a few are Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Attack On Titan, And To a lesser degree Dororo, Jigokuraku (Both peak btw) and Kakegurui. Really showing how prominent of a studio they have become in the past few years, overall MAPPA animating something causes it to go from unknown to a sensation, And this video encapsulates this perfectly.
(In addition, whilst Hell's Paradise is not as well animated as their other works it's still extremely well animated and it's animation is only getting better with each episode, episode 8 was a great example of this fact, but another thing holding MAPPA back is their amount of employees, if they had more they could have everything they turn out look as clean as CSM or JJK)

For their other projects you can really tell how much MAPPA puts into their work by how well it’s paced. Hells Paradise imo had horrible pacing and thus the fights feel few and far between in comparison to something like JJK. I truly think they’re just overworked and trying to be the poster child for every big seasonal anime release. I think they need to stop taking every release that comes to their doorstep and focus more on the quality of their work rather than how often we see it. The Animation, compositing, Choose of colors, art direction (backgrounds), complex storyboards and even Character acting (animation)

I have faith by season 2 of Jigokuraku MAPPA will change things around to focus more on it considering it'll after AOT ends and other shows go on break.

As a Japanese speaker, I can point out some additional issues with the Chainsaw Man anime adaptation that were not mentioned previously.
    1. Alteration of Important Lines Paralleling Manga:
For instance, in the first episode, Denji says, 「邪魔すんなら死ね!」 (If you get in the way, die!), which is modified from its manga counterpart, 「俺達の邪魔ァすんなら死ね!」(If you get in OUR way, die!). The removal of 「俺達の」 (Our) also eliminates the beautiful parallel with Makima's line that appears later in the manga, 「私達の邪魔するなら死んで」 (If you get in our way, die). These two instances of 'our' carry different meanings and illustrate the conflict between Denji and Makima. Removing at least one of them is quite disappointing for manga fans, especially in the Japanese version.
    2. Inaudible Voice Lines:
I don't have legal access to the English dub, but I and many Japanese viewers had difficulty understanding what Kishibe and Samurai Sword were saying. The problem is not that they speak too quietly, which might be in line with their characters, but rather the background music and sound effects playing simultaneously make their voice lines completely incomprehensible.
It's not that the anime adaptation is a total mess, but for me, it feels like they missed out on the full potential that the manga offered. Perhaps the manga set such a high bar that no studio could truly meet it.

I really loved the direction CSM took in the Anime, as after the Manga the Anime felt like something unique, something to be able to stand on its own feet. It was a fun ride as it was something new. Would it have been more like the Manga, I wouldn´t have this much fun with it. Seeing the same thing twice just isn´t as great, so I´m glad that didn´t happen

8:47 because The compositing was pretty bad and it got better in every part. Also the compositing for AOT was Completely outsourced to asahi production. Not wit themselves (sorry for putting so much comment, but there is a lot of misunderstanding)
