    Hey Daniel, just put a piece of scotch tape or painter's tape on the bottom of the bottles that you have already reviewed. That way when you go to do a video you can check the bottom of the bottles to see which ones have been reviewed and which ones haven't.

      old no. 7 seriously rocks. im into islays and love the peat spanking and weird challenging flavors and it might sound weird but conceptually jack no.7 provides that just with a differente flavor profile. its an explosion, the bananas, the barbecuy flavor, the nuts, the dark coffee, the slight detergent-y quality.. there is certainly a lot going on in the bottle and its an absolute bang for your buck. truly rocknroll in a bottle

    As a Tennessee man I've personally always considered your basic Jack Daniel's to be a "I know my friends want to mix their whiskey but they better stay away from my good shit" whiskey. One step above the plastic Evan Williams bottle a bottle of Jack is almost a requirement here... Easy Tennessee sippin' whiskey.

    We think maybe it's the water used to distill Jack that accounts for the difference from Dickle. Just like in brewing beer, water can add subtle and complex changes in flavor and body. Jack Daniels' uses water from the Cave Hollow Spring. Here is an excerpt from their site:
    'The water is iron free but does have lots of calcium and magnesium from the natural filtration through the limestone. The water is 56 degrees year round and produces roughly 300 gallons per minute. It’s the sole source of water for the cooking of the mash and fermentation of the whiskey'

    The trouble with the custom JD single barrel selects is that each one is different - they have 3 different flavour profiles that you choose from when you buy a barrel. I've bought several different ones, and some are amazing whereas others are really quite crap.

    Just found these videos on Whiskey Vault today, man, where have I been... just about 55 years old and started collecting some whisk(e)y's a year ago. ...... the two NUTTY guys enjoying some very good stuff very pleasant, I'm downloading your Vault Videos and will be playing in my bar at home when we do next Whiskey and Whisky tasting. My personal experience is that I enjoy stock standard Old Nr7 most.... had the Single Barrels, Gentleman's, Honey, Spice, but all roads lead to Old No 7.... I love the nutty taste, have a bit of corn chips, then sip Old No 7 ! Btw. I live in Windhoek Namibia.... that's in Africa ok..... keep up the good stuff....I own a few of the whiskeys form your top 10 list..... so I'm somewhat in the ball park of your clan....

    Glad you reviewed this one!
    I received one as a gift from the Texas Rangers (baseball team, not the cops).
    Rick # R-17 / Barrel 15-5243 / Bottled on 9.22.15.
    Some similarities, but among nosing notes, I kept getting dill. HEAVY dill, supported by an unavoidable acetone note.
    Sub tones were molasses/brown sugar and a slate minerality.
    On the palate, I keyed-in on candied walnut/toffee, spice, maple, cherry and (this is weird) beer batter.
    Not a go-to for me, but interesting when I want to switch things up a bit.

      Whiskey Vault I realize that I didn't really finish the post with the underlying questions I had while watching the review. First, does receiving a bottle as a gift count toward one's mooch factor?
      Second, shouldn't all of the bottles of this whiskey theoretically taste the same? My tasting notes were completely different from yours, leading me to wonder whether different batches varied to some degree in terms of flavor profile.
      Or is this just another example of different people tasting different things?

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say, (first) yes a mooch moment.
      2. Taste and smell are two of the most subjective realities that humans encounter. All analysis will be based on the prior brain patterns that you have in your own personal history. Although, very often I get different notes based on time of day, what I've eaten, and what I drank before.

    I'm not really a big fan of Jack in general but I did enjoy the Sinatra Century release. I came across it in a steakhouse being served in a pre-prohibition style old fashioned and had to have a glass neat after that. Was not disappointed.

  • @bdcochran01

    I agree with the analysis. When I gift Jack Daniels to relatives, it is the original. However, I have a couple of bottles of the Gentleman Jack that I will be gifting to a couple of millennials in the family. Not having grown up with whisk(e)y, it is a good start because some things have been taken out - making it a bit easier for people not brought up to experience different flavors and notes.

    I don't know about that new rule... the more whiskey the better of course, but Daniels already made it way too easy for Rex to mooch. I think for every glass that is mooched, Daniel should get to tell us a Rex story while Rex drinks the free whiskey.

    I suspect I have less experience with whisky than anyone that follows your posts and was drawn to this particular post about Gentleman Jack Daniels because I obtained some to compare to my own whisky. My first nose impression with Jack was; flowery, woody... not great, but quite different from my own. After a short time I could detect cherry too... again, not my favorite. After that I began to compare it side-by-side with my own and was shocked when my nose detected that peanut butter fragrance from my whisky. I'd never noticed that before. As to taste; the Jack was just too floral and woody for my taste. My whisky has a sweeter, light vanilla fragrance with a hint of oak... definitely a lesser-aged whisky. It may be a terribly amateur comparison, but it is the first time I have compared one whisky to another, and a very pleasant surprise!

    Jack Daniels has the best factory tour, hands down.
    They explain all the differences between bourbon and Tennessee whiskey, and what their different brands are and how they're produced.
    Just go during a weekday, since Lynchburg is closed on the weekends. Don't go on a Sunday, since the stills don't run on Sundays.
    Edit: Gentleman Jack is filtered through charcoal twice, regular Jack is filtered once. The filters are these huge containers, maybe 8' in diameter and 20 to 30 feet tall. The raw whiskey is dripped through the charcoal. (When they discard the charcoal, they wash it with water and it's put back into the still...

    Hey, Guys. I'm glad you actually said that Dickel 12 smells and tastes sour (I actually like Dickel12 a lot, but it's definitely different from a lot of my usual whiskies). Anyway, I was so glad to hear you describe it as sour, since a lot of reviewers mention how it's sweet, with caramel and honey. I think some reviewers may be full of horse***. At any rate, I try to drink Dickel 12 before I drink other whiskies, as it seems to enhance the sourness. Try it by itself. It'll change everything.

    "Nobody but Tennessee does the charcoal filtering..." I recently got my hands on a bottle of Jim Beam Choice. The Label says "charcoal filtered" as well. Not sure however, how this compares to the process of Jack Daniel's.

    • @nabiscokrundy5317
      @nabiscokrundy5317 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most bourbons are charcoal filtered. Tennessee whiskies differ because they're filtered with sugar maple charcoal and can't be considered a bourbon for that reason

    • @nabiscokrundy5317
      @nabiscokrundy5317 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To break it down a little more. Bourbons are filtered using activated charcoal, which is entirely flavorless. Tennessee whiskies use charcoal from sugar maple which has a major effect on the flavor of the whiskey. Thats the only true difference between Tennessee whiskey and bourbon, outside of that they're made entirely the same way.

    I did a Bourbon and Butchery class a while back sponsored by Brown-Forman. We didn't learn a great deal about butchery but they were very generous with the whisky. I have to say I prefer the standard Jack as well. However, I think their Woodford Reserve holds up. Quite a nice drop.

      It was "good value for money" as we say here in the UK. However, there was one really irritating thing about it. Some of the folks that turned up were clearly in the wrong place. "I'm a vegan and I don't like whisk(e)y" aren't things you expect to hear people say at a bourbon and butchery class. W T actual F?

    When I started getting into whiskey I had a bottle of Jack original I hadn't touched in years, surprised how much I enjoyed it neat, very sweet though. I like dickle 12 too. I had to stop trying different whiskeys once I got to 20 bottles and was going through them way to slowly. I'm still mostly in the $20 - $35 whiskey range looking for good ones to try in that mid budget range.

    I've always thought JD was overpriced so at $57 in NC for the single barrel I just avoided it entirely. However, the 375 mL was on sale for $27 so I took the plunge. It is a fine bourbon for sure. Much, much better than Old #7 or Gentleman. It tastes like double maturation, lots of oak and toffee influence that I've only gotten with some bourbons that are either really old or double casked. But in no way is this single barrel worth a $50-60 purchase when there are so many other great bourbons in the $30-50 range. I do rate it 3.75/5, and I'm tempted to get the barrel proof in the near future.

    I know this is an older video, but I had to let rex know that I also get peanuts in whiskey. It usually happens in Tennessee whiskey (Dickel 12 is a good example) but I will find it in a bourbon every so often (Evan Williams 1783 is an extreme example with Jim Beam products coming up behind that). Not a fan of peanut flavored whiskey :( Tell Dan high for me.

    Drinking it as we speak in the UK, I bought it on offer at a local store £25/$32, Its reasonable but the standard price is £45 in the same store (f**k that). trying to get in to whiskey tasting. Bought a bottle of buffalo trace last week standard price £23, much better i have to say and Basically half the price. Sure the buffalo trace isn't immensely characterful but if i wanted something slightly more rich i'd definitely go for a half decent scotch like Glenmorangie. I'm barely know any whiskey at the moment so Im sure my options will widen as i get into it.

    In 2001 I was stationed in Germany and we were able to get a bottle of Maxwell House Jack Daniels. It was in a beautiful decanting bottle with a cork stopper. The box referenced a hotel that was named Maxwell House. I didn’t have much experience then and had to quickly consume the bottle before my household goods shipped back to the US. Can’t ship liquids. 😢
    I am sure this is an impossible bottle to replace at this point. Have you heard of it?

    You guys probably got a bad batch. I've had two bottles of Single Barrel in the past. One was just incredible. Pure bliss. It completely changed my mind about Jack Daniel's. The other one that I purchased later was so-so. On the label they warn you that every bottle will have a unique taste and from my experience, I found it to be quite true. Don't give up on it just yet. Try another batch and see for yourself.

EW I liked. soco and jack I both disliked. a lot. now as an adult ive had a.fair share of whiskies. I still like the juice that comes out of beam. I know it is time to give jack a fair shot, but im not enthusiastic about it.

    Well, I have been convinced to expand my whiskey tasting skills now (total novice here - I have had Jim Beam, Wild Turkey and JD, all originals, and that's about it). Currently watching this video after finding nothing but cherry in a glass of original JD. There was a weird sweetness I couldn't place, I'd had some caramel earlier and thought it was that, but then you said banana - sure enough, I go back to the glass and the weird sweetness was banana, 100%. No wonder I like it!

    i think Dickle chills their store house and not sure if they char their barrels or not but I've heard other than the charcoal filtering the way they make their Whiskey is very different then Dack Janiels

    • @WhiskeyVault
      @WhiskeyVault  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They both use charred barrels and charcoal filtering at different points in the process. Also they both use the same grains. Dickel does chill filtering though. Makes it a bit smoother, but also removes some of the flavor components.
