So with a bit of curiosity I picked up a bottle of the Michter’s because how you guys ranted and raved over it. I sniffed, sipped, sniffed, sipped. Turns out I’m not very good at it. The only notes I could distinctly pick up were cream, caramel, and vanilla, with a little oak. One bottle later and my wife is bailing me out of jail for allegedly getting into a fist fight with my neighbor’s inflatable Santa. I’m no quitter. Got another bottle ready to go. Any advice?

Love Eagle Rare. Woodford is solid - have you every tried it side by side with Old Forester? You may be surprised. They have the same mash bill. Aged close to the same amount of time. And half of what becomes Woodford actually comes from the Old Forester distillery (column stills), with the other half coming from Woodford's pot stills (if memory serves).

Here in PA it's $40. Definitely a new favorite of mine (thank you Tribe) however, I still don't really think it's budget since it's hard to find and a bit pricey, for me at least.
Only one I have to disagree with is michters, but not because of the craft but scarcity and price. The vast majority of the country won't find this just sitting on the shelf and certainly not commonly under 35-45 bucks or more. I love the stuff, but easy budget it is not.

As a fairly new Bourbon drinker I would have to agree with the top 2 selections. Possibly in the reverse order as I enjoy Eagle Rare a tad more than Buffalo Trace but it is a bit more expensive. Both are hard to find in my area. I live in a wealthy retirement area of Florida and all the rich elderly people buy up all the good booze before I can get off work.

This is a good list....but I would remove some of the ones that really don't fit the price and add Evan Williams White, Evan Williams Single Barrel and Old Forester Signature. Those 3 are true budget bourbons.
@@BradHackett +1 to Elijah Craig. As much as I wanted Four Roses or Buffalo Trace to be my favorite, the apple-pie cinnamon spikey sweetness of Elijah Craig is what I keep reaching for
great video guys ! I am Canadian, and Buffalo Trace was my first ever bourbon, up here its every where for 34 bucks CDN as is Wild turkey 101..and thats right up my alley, the woodford and Elijah craig are about 50 but so good.. cheers !
I love drinking bourbons, thank you for your insights. I wish that over here in the U.K. we have more access to bourbons. I enjoyed the show with some Woodford Reserve. I regularly refer to your advice on the channel when I’m trying to sell some whisky. Keep up the good work. Peace out
1792 Small Batch is one of my favorites for on the cheap side. I’m no bourbon connoisseur, but it’s delicious to me with be sweeting yet the right mix of spice. Unfortunately it’s been getting closer to the $30 mark, when you used to be able to get it for $25 easy. Great video fellas!
Eagle Rare is such a solid bourbon, regardless of price. It's great no matter how you use it / take it. And if you can find it for $31 (which is what it should be priced ), its a steal.
Four Roses Bourbon (not Small Batch or Single Barrel) is my absolute favorite when I'm not trying to spend a lot. Higher mid-shelf taste for lower shelf price. Too bad it's stupid rare where I live, yet I can find Four Roses Small Batch and Single Barrel in every ABC store.
So I went into ABC Lynchburg,Va. I was directed to Henry McKenna and at the same time bought "Bulleit Rye" and "Virginia Distillery Port Cask". Henry McKenna seemed like too beginner for me. Today after learning more about "Angel Share" from y'all, I bought Jim Beams "Devils Cut". It's like drinking,"Liquid Oak". I love it. I also bought........"The Balvenie:14yr Carribean Cask". I understand why it costs more. Smooth and the toffee advertisement was no joke. Thank you for setting me up to be a more mature Whisky(ey) drinker. However I have not seen that particular Henry McKenna bottle before. Peace and love Wisky(ey) Generals. Lol Chris
Another great video guys! Im going with Elijah Craig as the best of this bunch.......or any bunch. But this is a good list......although i can do without Makers or Bulliet. Cheers!
Great channel, keep it coming guys. The 1st time I drank Eagle Rare I thought it was a fine sipping rum it’s so delicately sweet, but as you say, not so much it defies bourbon. That’s not to say all fine rum is sweet, some are clean and sharp and more like cognac. In my opinion, rums vary the most of any spirit in flavor and profile, but that’s a different story. I got 4 bottles of Eagle Rare from a famous outlet store for $27 per and thought I’d won the lottery! The Four Roses is wonderful and stepping up to the single barrel version is worth it, but I’ve seen the bottle you reviewed for under $30 and that’s all one can ask for. Elijah Craig barrel strength is just as you described and might offer every thing a bourbon can be without favoring one flavor profile over another. Maker’s is just boring for me and over marketed, but to each their own. Buffalo Trace is of course, classic. Of them all, Four Roses (more so the single barrel version) is best overall, Buffalo Trace, then Elijah. It’s difficult to rank Eagle Rare because it defies bourbon a bit (I know I said it didn’t, oops) and it is dangerously delicious. it is the absolute smoothest sipping, digestif candy bourbon that I often enjoy in replacement of dessert. I like drinking my dessert. Cheers!
Love y'alls channel I have just started my bourbon journey and still "finding my pallet" thanks for all yall do definitely helped me in my "begginer" journey!
I'm so glad to have found your channel this week! My mom introduced us kids to Wild Turkey 101 when she was making hot totties for us when I was a teenager. Gave us all a half a shot for shits 'n giggles. I'm the middle kid--shy, socially awkward, and adverse to risks. So when I reacted with, "Yum! Tastes like popcorn!" amid siblings hacking and gagging, her response was, "You're not supposed to like it!" Apparently Wild Turkey was her go to throughout the 80's--she was a logger/bartender/restauranteer. It's all I drank for the last decade. Now I'm branching out and trying the whiskey world, and I love finding content to steer me in one direction or another. Because risk aversion. ;P
Also can't believe LARCENY hasn't been mentioned...it's under $30 here in Missouri and in my blind tastings it always does extremely well. I highly recommend it to the Tribe!
In Nova Scotia: Buffalo Trace - $41.78 Bulleit - $40.80 Eagle Rare - $60.53 Elijah Craig - $45.99 Maker's - $43.42 Michter's - $74.57 Woodford - $50.71 Wild Turkey 101 is no longer available. I bought the last bottle in the province last year. Never seen Four Roses or Henry McKenna here.
I can still get 101, but I don't believe Four Roses ships anywhere in Canada. Trenny & C did a review with it a while ago, and I think they are in BC...so it surprised me when they could get it (though, from Vancouver, it may be really easy to zip south and back for something like that). Will have to check the Calgary pricing after work this afternoon. :-)
Oh God, $41-42 for Buffalo Trace? It’s pretty much my favorite bourbon but that’s too much! It’s about $25-27 for me in California. Reminds me of a liquor store in Jackson, Wyoming. Stopped in to see if I could find a whiskey from this one Montana distillery I visited earlier in the trip. Sure enough they had it-for like $60! I got it for WAY less at the distillery IIRC. Lo and behold I look around the aisle and they had Jim Beam for about $20+, Jack Daniels for about $40, etc. everything was marked up double price essentially.
They are....but remember the Henry McKenna uses a very close mash bill, and generally speaking that 10 year single barrel Henry McKenna to me is the better version of the Evan WIlliams Single.
I fell in love with EW 1783, trying the Four Roses small batch tonight - so far it's pretty good. I found it a little dry on the back end but that's me. Cheers fellas.
Oddly enough, I'm drinking the Buffalo - right now - which is, also, my go-to whiskey. It used to be Woodford; but once the Buffalo hit me, it was all, beastie love! Also, I don't know what the upper-limit is for price, but the Knob Creek, Small Batch (at 50%) is a Buffalo Slayer! For me, it's a very well-rounded bourbon, with a rich, caramel, dark sugar, clove taste that's very robust. As for the nose, it's like this sweet, earthy, loamy hole I just want to fall into. With a bit of water, it, really, does open up. Great review, guys. Thanks!
I'm spoiled by my $70/750ml Nelson's Green Brier 108 Single Barrel that I got at the distillery tour. It's 124 proof cask strength, but it's so ridiculously smooth, you'd never know. You can't buy it in stores, but you can buy Belle Meade, which is also from the same distillery and absolutely delicious for only $40/750ml.
Love the channel guys. I only have a couple glasses a week so I tend to go with a lot of the single barrel stuff....I have never had 9/10 of these definitely gonna try buffalo trace and wild turkey 101.
For me in Massachusetts: Woodford $30 or less four roses $25 ish Elijah Craig $25 to 30 Michters American $45 and not bourbon Henry McKenna bib $32 Makers Mark $25 ish Bulleit Bourbon $25 ish Wild Turkey 101
Where i live in western ma the prices are at least 5 to 10 dollars more per bottle. I even saw a bottle of buffalo trace for over 40 bucks in pittsfield which i would never pay. That store tends to rip people off with their prices and l rarely go in there. turkey 101 is at 27.00 usually, again good stuff but i wouldn't pay more than that for it. The eagle rare is around 35.00 most of the time.
I love tin cup. Tin cup calls it a whiskey but its technically a bourbon. It's got a very friendly flavor profile and tastes of maple sugar and spiced vanilla. I'm a huge fan of sweet bourbons
Currently trying to work out what I might like in terms of alcohol, having lost my father and his wealth of experience 2 months ago, beyond my existing favourites. Really like this channel and, given vids like this, the surrounding community. So I was just wondering Bourbon and Whisky wise (maybe even more broadly) what might be things I should try given I like Amaretto, Benedictine, Cointreau, Dimple 15, Drambuie, Glayva, Grand Marnier and Southern Comfort? Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve (Standard and Double Oak), Maker's 46, Wild Turkey Rye, Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey, Wild Turkey 101 and Longbranch are all, locally, in my 'acceptable' price range - if that helps.
I just discovered yall a few days ago and holy smokes I LOVE YALL so much already. I love and genuinely enjoy bourbon and I really also love learning more about it. So thanks guys! And keep the awesomely entertaining knowledge coming!
Current favorite is Eagle Rare, but it is very hard to find locally. Fell in love with Bulliet just a few days ago, so number 2 for me. I haven't had Buffalo Trace in a long time, as I was tasting others, but was my favorite before Eagle Rare, so it's my number 3.
Interesting to hear different perspectives. The Mash and Drum says to reach for Four Roses small batch if you are looking for something more spicy and less sweet. You guys say what's notable about it is its sweetness.

Elijah Craig was my entree to bourbon, prompted by you guys. But then I tried Larceny, also on your recommendation. It's now my go to bourbon. My latest whiskey choice is Red Bush, but I couldn't find your review.
Great video. I started drinking Buffalo trace about three years ago. It had been my go to bourbon for a couple of years. Now my go to is Russell's 10 year. Haven't had any of the other Bourbons on that list but I think I got to go out and get another bottle of buffalo trace. I've tried half a dozen or so Bourbons. Rowan's creek. I had a ten year rebel yell and it was one of the best I’ve had. I think it was 100 proof. I’ll have to see if I can find another bottle.
This is a good list....but I would remove some of the ones that really don't fit the price and add Evan Williams White, Evan Williams Single Barrel and Old Forester Signature. Those 3 are true budget bourbons.
I had the same thoughts on Old Forester
I would add Benchmark to that list
Yup, yup, and oh yup.

Primarily a mixer. Try it in an old Old Fashioned. Tastes great.
I've watched this at least 3 times. One of my favorites to come back to. I've now purchased each of these 😁
Me too! After trying them all out, which one(s) stood out as your personal favorite?
@@snetx10 Elijah Craig and Michters American
@@BradHackett +1 to Elijah Craig. As much as I wanted Four Roses or Buffalo Trace to be my favorite, the apple-pie cinnamon spikey sweetness of Elijah Craig is what I keep reaching for
great video guys ! I am Canadian, and Buffalo Trace was my first ever bourbon, up here its every where for 34 bucks CDN as is Wild turkey 101..and thats right up my alley, the woodford and Elijah craig are about 50 but so good.. cheers !
I want to see Daniel's three different decanters. That's a brilliant idea.
Knob creek single i am a big fan of. About 60 bucks where i am but big big fan
About the same here in Tampa Bay Florida.
I love drinking bourbons, thank you for your insights. I wish that over here in the U.K. we have more access to bourbons. I enjoyed the show with some Woodford Reserve. I regularly refer to your advice on the channel when I’m trying to sell some whisky. Keep up the good work. Peace out
I've just really started watching your vids but have learnt so much. Definitely a great source of info as I branch out with my bourbon experience,
1792 Small Batch is one of my favorites for on the cheap side. I’m no bourbon connoisseur, but it’s delicious to me with be sweeting yet the right mix of spice. Unfortunately it’s been getting closer to the $30 mark, when you used to be able to get it for $25 easy. Great video fellas!
@Jonny two times YIKES! Lol
Love you guys. Whiskey with personality, with charisma, with humor. Huzzah, Daniel and Rex. Liked and subscribed.
'To the death' "NO, TO THE PAIN" Eagle Rare - my go to
Eagle Rare is such a solid bourbon, regardless of price.
100 percent agree
Lol
Chris
Evan Williams Single barrel have all of these for breakfast , with McKenna no2 in your top 10.
When I was younger I was partial to Grandad 114, always thought it was very smooth for that level of alcohol
Because risk aversion. ;P
Woodford costs close to $35 in Florida. Can't believe Evan Single didn't make that list.
For sure Evan Single Barrel is one of my favs.
Evan gets a bad rap but single barrel Evan is like $15 a 5th and it ain't bad
$26 here in So Cal at Total Wine. One of my fav budget bourbons
Total wine and ABC both have EW Single for ~$24. Same for Buffalo Trace.
Also can't believe LARCENY hasn't been mentioned...it's under $30 here in Missouri and in my blind tastings it always does extremely well. I highly recommend it to the Tribe!
In Nova Scotia:
Buffalo Trace - $41.78
Bulleit - $40.80
Eagle Rare - $60.53
Elijah Craig - $45.99
Maker's - $43.42
Michter's - $74.57
Woodford - $50.71
Wild Turkey 101 is no longer available. I bought the last bottle in the province last year.
Never seen Four Roses or Henry McKenna here.
Yikes! I've been getting 1.75L bottles of eagle rare 10 for $42 here... I must be spoiled.
@@andrewp8284 Once you account for the exchange rate and add $15 - $20 for duty, it's about what can be expected up here.
Very surprised at the lack of any Evan Williams. For the money they're generally exceptional value.
Definitely. Evan Williams Bottled in Bond is one of my favorite bourbons at any price.
They are....but remember the Henry McKenna uses a very close mash bill, and generally speaking that 10 year single barrel Henry McKenna to me is the better version of the Evan WIlliams Single.
Really surprised Eagle Rare is on this list and EW isn’t. The BiB White Label is better than Buffalo Trace IMO.
These aren't budget. When I think budget I think sub $20. Evan William's 1783 and four Rose's yellow are my go to under $20
I love Evan Williams! Totally agree. Oh and I thought Evan Williams was actually the 1st Bourbon maker in Kentucky
Sipping the same right now. Incredible story and tour, just HAD to buy a couple bottles!
Nelson's Greenbrierd trucker hat I'd the best hat I've ever owned.
Curious to see what you think about 1792 Small Batch
should have made the list
Eagle Rare is made at the Buffalo Trace distillery. Love it!
Just starting to get into whiskey for my upcoming birthday. I've never had it before, so thank you for this video for a newbie like myself.
Love the channel guys. I only have a couple glasses a week so I tend to go with a lot of the single barrel stuff....I have never had 9/10 of these definitely gonna try buffalo trace and wild turkey 101.
For me in Massachusetts:
Woodford $30 or less
four roses $25 ish
Elijah Craig $25 to 30
Michters American $45 and not bourbon
Henry McKenna bib $32
Makers Mark $25 ish
Bulleit Bourbon $25 ish
Wild Turkey 101
where in mass?
Yeah from what I've seen Four Roses Small batch ranges from $30 to $35 in MA, as far as standard pricing goes.
@@thomasbuck303 I tend to shop one the border I'm on the CT Mass like. And it's normally 40
Close to the same prices for me and I'm in southeast CT. I think I get pretty lucky here. Good availability and ok prices in general.
I'm a huge fan of sweet bourbons
doesn't make the budget category here
It does in Az. High rye american whiskey.
About 25.00 or so
Not a huge bourbon fan, despite that, Wild Turkey 101 remains a favorite of mine due to good memories with friends! Great video guys!
Woodford is #3 for me. I've put it up against many bourbons twice the price and it beats many of them. Otherwise, your list is pretty spot on!
That is one incredible wall of soul sauce. I applaud you now.........
(Starts slow clap)
I just discovered yall a few days ago and holy smokes I LOVE YALL so much already. I love and genuinely enjoy bourbon and I really also love learning more about it. So thanks guys! And keep the awesomely entertaining knowledge coming!
Larceny is my go to and is under $30 anywhere in my town. Amazing stuff fr fr 💯
Definitely top tier budget... I drink it over many 50-60 dollar bottles
Perfect. I just ordered a bottle of Buffalo Trace. First bourbon I’ll ever have (mainly a scotch guy til now). Sounds like I made a good choice
In Germany you can get Maker's Mark for 26€ if you look in the right places - in Dollars that would be exactly 30 Bucks.
$25-30 here in Maine
Plenty of german online retailers have Maker’s for under 25€
21,99€ roughly $25
WT 101 everyday.

WT 101 just jumped from $20 to $24 for 750 ml in Ohio. I'm bummed!
@@artprince9163 That's disappointing. I buy the half gallons for $36 usually and the store I go to has been out of stock for nearly a month.
@@artprince9163 Consider yourself lucky. Here in sweden a 700 ml bottle of 101 costs 51 bucks haha
I think rare breed is just about the best of the best. I've tasted bourbons in the hundreds of dollars that don't compare quality and flavor wise.
"I'm not getting that at all... I think you're having a stoke..." Hahahahaha!
I can still find the McKenna BiB at specs in Houston for under $30. Eagle Rare is usually 25-30 at my specs, it is just impossible to find.
Interesting to hear different perspectives. The Mash and Drum says to reach for Four Roses small batch if you are looking for something more spicy and less sweet. You guys say what's notable about it is its sweetness.
My go to is Larceny Bourbon.
$26.
Never disappoints.
good lord. we have different palates then. i really didnt like that stuff. i'll take evan williams single barrel for 2 bucks less. ...or old forester sig 100proof for 8 bucks less. but hey, if you like it, rock on
Larceny is fantastic for the price. Awesome wheated bourbon. If it had a fancier bottle and label they could sell it for $40. Great stuff.
Absolutely should be on this list.
Larceny is pretty decent, just tried it, kind of reminds me of Jim Beam (Jim Beam is horrible, in my opinion) but is still good.
@@bocain812 Evan Williams Single Barrel to me is a nice smooth whiskey that will also mix nicely in in an Old Fashioned. It is severely underrated.
Buffalo Trace and Eagle Rare are almost the same bourbon. How does BT come out over ER when ER is 10-year? Is it because it's $5 cheaper?
The Woodford double oak makes a dang good old fashioned.
Noah's mill, deckles eight year bourbon, and I was lucky enough to score a bottle of old Rip van Winkle on Christmas Eve last year. Just got a bottle of four roses smallbatch today. I'll be checking you guys out thank you.
Love the Buffalo, but oddly enough I am having a dram of Laphroaig and don’t agree that these are both Whiskey. Suppose we ran out of words. Different worlds
Great episode! Have you guys ever done a "best way to cleanse your pallet during a whiskey flight" episode?
Jonathan Moore I also support a “best palate cleansers,” maybe for the next quarterly challenge?
Great idea!
Cream Soda then water
Henry McKenna won some big awards, that's why the price went up
Exactly. It took 1st place and stores couldn't keep it in stock.
I picked it up for the first time about 2 years ago for $35. Its a solid bourbon, so I returned a month or two later for a 2nd bottle... and it was $65. Its good, but not $65 good.
I’m an old guy just starting to try bourbons. I started Knob Creek and liked it. Have tried Evan Williams and Makers. Had a taste of Buffalo (need to try that one again). But I’ve just hit Elijah Craig and nothing comes close to it per my taste buds. I love it. Haven’t tried 4 Roses yet. It’s a new road of discovery.
Just found this channel a week ago. You guys are great. Sometimes drunk, sometimes starting your buzz, always entertaining. For the record, Woodford is #1 on my budget/go to list, tho I don't really like the finish. It 'flattens out' IMO. Still tops on my list tho. Stoked to see you guys in favor of Builett Rye (I've seen your opinions in other vids). I don't like cinnamon, whether food or booze, but BR has a cinnamon aspect/bite to it and I love it. Discovered it on a whim. Isn't that how it always happens ?! Lol. Keep up the good work. I'm a fan.
I love both however, I'd have Eagle Rare as number 1 and Buffalo Trace in 2nd.
Jacob yup! Agreed 100%. Love my Eagle rare

Fun vid. Like a lot of folks, I'd say some of these bourbons would be in the mid/high price category. But, I can def usually get a good price on Makers, Buffalo Trace, and Wild Turkey 101. But I gotta be honest, my ultra-budget bourbons are Evan Williams and Old Grand Dad.
