Darth Sidious definitely wanted to rule forever, but that really doesn't make him different from any other Sith Master since the time of Darth Bane. Granted, no other Sith since Bane had been in Palpatine's position, actually ruling over the Galaxy and defeating the Jedi. However, Sidious was still a true Sith. He even looked down on Darth Plagueis both for believing the rule of two was ending with them, and for believing Palpatine wouldn't try and challenge him. Palpatine certainly was going to do everything in his power to stay on his throne, however he would rather die and have Vader continue the traditions of the Sith and rule the galaxy himself than die and have nobody carry on the legacy of the Sith and their accomplishments. But again, that really makes him no different than any other Sith Lord throughout history. They willingly trained an apprentice fully knowing the Sith imperative meant that in all likelihood their apprentice would kill them one day and continue from where they left off. The relationship between Darth Sidious and Darth Vader was really no different.
I do think that Palpatine was perhaps a bit overconfident, as he saw himself as the ultimate Sith Lord, who finally overcame the Jedi and ended the quest started by Darth Bane. I also believe that Vader's injuries definitely helped that. Before Vader was defeated on Mustafar Sidious told Yoda that, "Soon Lord Vader will be more powerful than either of us." At that time he knew he was training and especially strong apprentice, and he knew he would have to take special precautions to prevent himself from being immediately overthrown. Darth Vader was Palpatine's crowning achievement. He already saw himself as the culmination of the accomplishments of every Sith Lord, and doubly so in terms of Vader. He not only managed see through the Sith's grand plan by defeating the Jedi and taking over the galaxy, but he also managed to turn the Jedi's "chosen one", the most powerful known force user in terms of sheer potential, into his Sith apprentice. Palpatine wore Vader like the most illustrious medal in the galaxy.
After Vader was defeated, he knew that he was crippled, both physically and mentally. Much like other Sith Lords, he tested Vader many times throughout their relationship. Every time Vader came out on top, never did Palpatine find someone who was capable of replacing Vader (until Luke, at least). But again, that made him no different than any other Sith Lord. If the master found a more worthy apprentice, they held no qualms about replacing them. That's the contradictions of the Sith, neither master nor apprentice could truly trust each other, but they relied on each other just the same. Vader was certainly at a disadvantage after Mustafar, his suit even made him weaker against force lightning, which was Palpatine's signature attack. However, that would not be the first time we would see a Sith Lord relying on a piece of machinery that was vulnerable to Sith lightning.
Ultimately, I believe Palpatine truly did want to rule the galaxy forever, and keep his apprentice as his crown and his hammer. However, he was still a true Sith Lord, and knew the importance of having a worthy apprentice, even if that meant he may be overthrown one day. I also believe that Vader could have overthrown Sidious one day, and what truly held him back wasn't his physical disability, but his psychological ones. Vader was far stronger in the force than Sidious even at his weakest, the only thing Sidious was perhaps stronger in was in knowledge of the Dark Side itself.
Darth Sidious was a master of manipulation, including manipulating his apprentice to keep him in line.

Honestly Darth Sidious has no problem replacing apprentices once they failed or be defeated by a powerful opponent Vader is no exception Sidious even try to replace him with Starkiller and Luke when they beat Vader.

Two things on Palpatine. 1. Anakin was a poor student of politics, leadership and governing. He had almost zero patience for it. Dooku was the role model; he knew the difference between making the people comply, over forcing compliance. Palpatine rushed the death of his master and had to star all over again with how to bring about immortality. With Vader's loss in power, the deficit was all but a waste of time and I assume Palpatine never really worked on a solution after this. His prize was ripped from him, from the Sith and the Force knew it.

Nicely presented and you cover the entire spectrum without flaming dissention. Far too many fail on epic proportions to behave as adults. Sometimes what is, simply is what is.
I watched "A New Hope" at the theater in 1978. The books fill in many of the existing movie and show gaps. Star Wars is dependent on action special effects rather than script. That hasn't changed since 1978. Sometimes its nice to just wing it and enjoy for the hell of it.

I'm not sure how he did it in canon, but in the Legends Darth Plagueis book, Plagueis taught him how to conceal himself in the Force so that the Jedi could only sense him as a normal human. It was a dark side ability that they used when in public. I believe its called Force Clouding in other sources

So to sum things up Sidious truly feels about Vader he’s a slave to him just a pathetic broken shell of a man who doesn’t have the hunger for power to kill him. The fact that he loyal to Sidious makes him a complete utterly buffoon of a Sith Vader is a tool just to be throw away in case someone stronger then him to take his place only benefit Sidious such is the way of the Sith.
