  • The parking brake on Steve’s car won’t hold the car on the driveway. So he brings you along to adjust the parking brake and shows you the tools needed to do the job.

    The only small quirk I find in this video is that you put the center console back over the hand brake, before the function test. Is that necessary? If you needed further adjustment it just seems like you're putting it back on, then off, then on again, seemingly wasting time. Unless the console needs to be in place for some reason that I missed?

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Good catch Chief. I may have tested it off camera, but I don’t remember. If not, you’re right - that could’ve been a waste of time.

    When would you adjust at the handbrake versus adjusting the star wheel at the brake itself?

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Do the brake shoes first. If it still needs adjustment, then adjust at the hand lever.

    • @harryberry474
      @harryberry474 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ToolDemos ...mine is a '98 but I'm sure the procedure is the same for actual adjustment but the center console is probably attached a little different, I'm not going to mess with it until after replacing the rear brakes later this week, I probably won't have to adjust at all.

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@harryberry474 perfect! Make sure your brakes are adjusted properly at the drum first, then adjust the cable if necessary.

  • @Georger392
    @Georger392 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good idea is to have the back of the car jacked up, so you can adjust the handbrake slightly by turning the back wheels to see if they are biting. Don’t put the centre consul back until you have done this.

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Hafsa. Try lifting the handle slightly, then push the button in and lower the handle. When you lift the handle, it should take the tension off of the release button.

    • @hafsavohra1879
      @hafsavohra1879 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ToolDemos Thank you for your reply but the Lifting if the handle is main issue as i need 2 hands to lift it a bit and then release it with button.

    • @ToolDemos
      @ToolDemos  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hafsavohra1879 ok, thanks. I suspect you have either a mechanical problem inside your brake drum, or a brake cable that has rust on the inside, making it hard to operate. If it is the cable, it must be replaced.

    Okay, hold on a second, I gotta give you some - - C. C.-- , cuz the "emergency handbrake" is a strong indication that your brakes are wearing out, & or they are not properly adjusted, for the "rear brakes" that is, also that metal cable will stretch but ONLY after like 30-40 thousand years and maybe a very, very small tiny Bit, that's why the engineers put that type of device...
    Sorry bro but BRAKES, is one of my biggest pet peeves, and you do not want to mess around with that at all do it right or learn how to do it right or get somebody to do it for you.,
    Peace out - ✌️, See you in the next one....

    • @ToolDemos

      You were right to bring up the idea of adjusting the brakes, Daniel. I briefly mentioned that in the video but perhaps I could’ve done a better job explaining it. I certainly would not want somebody to overlook their brake shoes and potentially get hurt. I truly appreciate your professional advice and your prayers, thank you.

    • @harryberry474
      @harryberry474 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Daniel C ... It's been my experience that parking brake cables do stretch, I've had it happen to me and seen it on other cars too. You're right though about checking for worn brakes or not adjusted correctly first (typically worn though) but cables can stretch too if you're the type that really reads on your brake handle.
