    That’s not fixing….that’s replacing!

      how do you "fix" a corroded cable? You could lubricate it, but then it can still swell up from progressing corrosion and eventually will break.

    I think this video confirms my problem and confirms I don't want to fix it myself! Sometimes it's better to pay the garage guys to help. 👍

    Similar set up on the Corsa with no room to get your hands in behind the heat shield. Fiddly but the parts are cheap enough and it is a relatively easy DIY job

    I used wd40 & a hammer whilst someone else pulled the handbrake on & off until it became free

      I’ve tried that in the past with little success, I’m presuming that the cable was sticking and not the calliper wd40 is ok to get it moving but the cable will start sticking again as the wd40 dries out, if it is the calliper that’s sticking it will also need lubricating with a different oil than wd40

      @RichManPoorMotors I did it about a week ago, seems ok. But i will ad some chain oil from my bike. Thx
      It's to get it through the mot, the handbreake is a lot tighter , feels fixed anyway. Re mot tomorrow fingers crossed lol

    Anyone has come up with a long term solution for this? I am currently at my 3th handbrake cable replacement, this car wasn't properly engineered

    THE BEST VIDEO ON YOU TUBE showing you how to do this job properly i had to do it in the winter as the rain was going inside and then it would freeze it all, and then handbrake would not let go so i keep the calipers well greased got to do job as i have changed the pads but still nothing so new cable it is 5* for you video thanks.

    Hi I have been having trouble with my hand brake with freezing temperature it's sticking on brakes a binding on and hand brake is very loose is there anything I can do to prevent this ?

  • @wordreet
    @wordreet ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Recent UK -3C temperatures made my handbrake seize up. Had to drive anyway, ooer, but it freed up by the time I got to work, (6 miles). Everything, including the lever etc, has been freed up and lubed now, but I may replace the whole lot next spring.

    My rear drivers side is catching,after applying the handbrake.
    Trying to figure out if its the caliper or a spring not releasing on the handbreak mechanism.

    Ahhh, I knew this would be a tedious fix, especially without a car hoist. Idk, I'll probably still do it myself.

    Fair play dude , doing all that and filming it , pretty pro and seamless AND ON YER BAK !! I’ve just been piping and flaring in the rain on my back also , a nite mare at 18 definitely so at 64 ,, I bet you too dream of a four poster and a garage full of every conceivable bit of kit to make the job easier! Nice one bud 😅

      I had a two post lift in my workshop that I rented from Warwickshire county council, but after Covid they put my rent up by 270% if I wanted to stay in it. so I had to close, as it made it unviable, definitely easier with a lift

    I have an issue where moving the bracket to fully engaged and fully free the wheel still spins free either way. Something sheered off inside the calliper? Is it fixable? Thanks

    Great vid my dude!
    Sooo, the last few cms of the cable points upwards? Instant water trap if the little rubber boot is knackered then! Nice design.
    Ah, is that why my Astra Estate is called "Design"? 🙄

    • @benghazi4216
      @benghazi4216 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It goes upwards into the cabin, hence it would make things even worse if you would turn this solution "upside down" for the benefit of the cable.
      I for one would complain more about the ridiculous routing. Not service friendly at all and could be done much better. But it's merely an afterthought.

      just shows how they design the cars for them not the owner

  • @sulev111

    what if i just sparyed WD40 on that cable and let it sit for the night, no disassembly

    • @RichManPoorMotors
      @RichManPoorMotors  ปีที่แล้ว

      you find that the rust inside the cable restricts the inner moving as it sticks to the outer, depending on where its getting rusty, if you can free it all well and good but in my experience it with start sticking again soon after

    • @sulev111
      @sulev111 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RichManPoorMotors makes sense. Luckily mine wasn't that stuck. I managed to get it loose by just pressing with my fingers. Washed the spring and added WD40. The joys of owning an old car :)

    What if it's completely seized? Even after taking the wheel and caliper off, and the hub is unrotatable?

    • @RichManPoorMotors
      @RichManPoorMotors  ปีที่แล้ว

      if your calliper is seized then you may need to swap the calliper, but 1st check that its completely seized, i think on the astra it rotates the same on both sides, but on some cars your need a left had and right hand wind back tool for rotating each side, if you can get it moving then you might just be able to free with lots of penetrating spray and moving on the handbrake side, if its seized and you might be buying a new one anyway, try removing the pads and press once on the pedal then try winding back in, if you over extend the caliper piston then you will need to bleed the brake, but if your replacing the caliber then you will haver to do that anyway

    • @miljororforsprakpartiet290
      @miljororforsprakpartiet290 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RichManPoorMotors caliper isn't seized, it's removed already. but wheel hub does not rotate?

    • @RichManPoorMotors
      @RichManPoorMotors  ปีที่แล้ว

      The Calliper on the cdti is what controls the handbrake on the Astra so if it’s removed and whelk won’t rotate then it’s a hub bearing problem, I’m not sure if other Astras have shoes inside a drum if it’s one of those then you need to slack off the adjuster hit it a lot with a hammer and try and pull the drum off then replace new fittings before re assembly to stop it happening again
