2 years later, u know if it would work on a roof on a car? The previous owner dipped it black and I would like to remove it, but little scared... hehe And Goo Gone doesn't exist here I think.. :/ #Sweden
Wd40 worked great for me. The wd40 basically caused it to release from the rims and made it way easier to peel off. The wd40 is not for melting and wiping off the plasti dip. I used engine degreaser for the hard to remove spots and it straight up liquified the plasti dip making it very easy to wipe away.
I went to O'Reilly and bought a can of brake cleaner for 4.29 I sprayed let it sit about 10 minutes came back sprayed it again and it wiped off like makeup
I just bought mothers foaming bug and tar remover and armorall extreme bug and tar remover and it did absolutely "NOTHING". Thee only thing that i found that works is goo gone. The spray works good but buy the gel spray if available. A couple minutes of wait time and hit it with a bristle brush and it just melts away. Get plenty of microfiber cloths to wipe it off.
One that is really good to use is Remington REM oil (gun oil). Get the one that is a green and yellow can. You spray it on the surface that has plasti dip and while it's still wet you wipe it off with a towel. You won't even break a sweat doing it.
Broooo....so glad i found this vid....i was goin to go with goo gone but in the instructions it said no rubber surfaces.....so i went with the bug and tar remover......HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD....the longer it sits the easier it is...i literally removed the plasta dip with my finger by just rubbing it
I used the exact same bug tar remover and it worked wonders on thin or heavy coated plastic dip. It was on my front chrome bumper and I coated it with the bug tar remover and used a cloth and man it just rolled off. Could even take my finger and it was gone
as I'm watching your video I'm spraying on brake parts cleaner and you have to try it..for me it's melting right off..abit of stink but it's working wonders
I had no issue peeling most of mine off without any product. Any of the trouble spots I just used acetone. Works better than any product tested here.Very glad you made this video though. Well done!
Robert Dittenhauser Thanks Robert! If Plasti Dip is applied properly it should peel off as your experience shows. When it's applied too thin you have to resort to other measures. I'll be sure to try acetone for a test sometime as now I'm curious to see how it will perform!
My husband sprayed on some kind of cleaning/wax stuff we purchased out of a gas station parking lot. One of those vendors pushing a product out in front type deal. Anyway he sprayed it all over the running boards then used his power washer with high pressure and it came off so easy. Worked like a charm. Running boards looked new.
I just used a product made by JASCO, Premium paint & epoxy remover - brushable semi-paste. It took absolutely mininmal effort to remove the plasti dip!! Highly recommend.
Gas works 👍 I was fueling my car and a little bit of gas dripped on my rims and the Plasti dip was coming off,so guys watch what your doing , while fueling
I just watched this today, I made the mistake of spraying too thin of a layer on my truck and it was such a b***h taking it off and goo gone worked awesome! I left it sitting for about an hour and it peeled off like a dream, it's super messy but who cares it works so well.
"Well, that settles it,!" leave that engine cleaner on there for about 5-10 & it WILL literally melt off. elbow grease optional. overspray wipes away as well.be careful tho, strong stuff, wont eat the paint
xylene is the main thinning agent in plastidip. You can pick it up at the local hardware store it literally melts it off without damaging the factory finish.
I used WD 40 you need to let it sit for about 45 mins it literally washed off some spots I didn't apply enough and light brushes ripped off what's left
Kerosene, spray bottle, scrub brush and a pressure washer. I had a set of motorcycle wheels and a swing arm with several applications over 2 years they have deep crevices and rough surface texture. All ready for blasting and powder coating.
Hugh Jorgan depending how well it's painted determines how well it peels. The last owner of my camaro painted one of the rims really bad and now I have one rim with black still on it.
Brake-cleaner is OK on paint, since paint is hardened, if you have to clean a mess but if you don't better not use it. Aceton cleans paint. Goof-off and brake cleaner together can be used very carefully just don't spray on brakes/disc/pads/tire.
Just tried a wax & grease remover that's used for paint prep. It removes plasti-dip easily like a scratch 'n' win card coating. I used a 3M non-scratch dish-washing pad to rub it off...just dab it on, wait 20 seconds and rub off...so easy
Silicon based tire shine is what destroys/removes dip, So some brands/types can be dangerous when applying to your tires, and others, like this one, will only help it haha
Good video. Please try to stop saying "uhh" "umm" "but umm" "yeh, uh, but uh" so much . I normally don't pay attention much but this really caught my attention lol. Drove me nuts.
BEST METHOD: Use gasoline over the entire car then for best result use a lighter after application I promise it will all melt off and you can even collect a check for it Side note: Make sure you have someone else do this for you so you're not held responsible
Great video man! personally I've used wd-40 with better results than yours but it was a sticky nightmare when I used it in the past. I'll definately try the bug and tar remover next time. Thx for the awesome comparison!
Great Video. I used several heavy coats of Plasti Dip; having a lot of trouble getting the dip off. Tried Naphtha to remove it came off very little with similar. Also tried high heat with a blow dryer worked okay but took a very long time.. How long did it take you with the bug and tar to do it all? Thanks - Tom
+Tom A. Hmmm. A couple heavy coats and it usually is able to pull off, but sounds like you're getting unlucky. Unfortunately it still took me about 2 hours start to finish with the bug and tar. My fingers were sore as hell after. The nooks and crannies are the real pain. If that doesn't work out, you can try spraying another coat and then remove it after. It sounds a bit counter-intuitive but sometimes more helps you pull it off together.
+EatSleepDrive So i just was told that my friend who bought the canisters used something called Rust Oleum LeakSeal, he said it would last better in the snow and with the salt. I wasn't planning on taking them off lol.. Just trying sell them to auto shop up here and he won't take the coating off. Understandable.. Appreciate your feedback and thanks for informing me that it took 2 hours with you, gives me a baseline on when to throw in the towel and just junk them.. Someone mentioned aircraft remover, just looking for the most effective way in the quickest about of time (working in mid 20s degree weather) with ruining the rim OEM. Appreciate all the feedbacks. Thanks Everybody, Tom
+Tom A. Thanks for the follow up. Aircraft remover will take off just about anything, just be careful it doesn’t mess up the wheel finish under the 'LeakSeal'. It's pretty serious stuff for sure.
Easiest and cheapest way = Silicone Remover. Every Paintshop uses this to clean your car before applying new paint. So there will be no damage at all. Use it with a brush and then power wash when wet.
Just saying , DW-40 works great for those little over spray area’s. Final results gonna be a little greasy but just wash it and wax it later you’ll b fine .
My first time removing plastic dip from wheels I used automotive lacquer thinner on what didn't want come off. It left stains but with a clean rag it solved that. Automotive reducer would work the same but warning be careful how you use on any part of a vehicle
I heard liquid wrench works. Iono. I’m researching because I want to remove the Plasti dip on my grill and I don’t want to mess up the paint. Not sure what products to use any suggestion is welcome...
Why not just peel it of as it was designed to do? I've never in the 4 years that I've dipped, ever needed to use chemicals to remove Plasti Dip. If you applied it properly with a minimum of 5 coats, it will peel off like a sheet. Just saying.
To sum up the top vauched for plasti dip removal product within the comments I'll say it's BRAKE CLEANER. Some even attest that it works wonders(so long as one wipes soon after applying since break cleaner tends to evaporated in a short period of time)
The GooGone works great... use it wet and keep it wet...I use a body panel scraper and it's really a trouble free way of getting off PlastiDip. .. I'm in the process is re-doing my wheels and am using GooGone to clear the wheels for the new coating... I'll throw a video up of the GooGone in action later today...👈
If the plasti dip is thick enough in spots to peel it off certainly start with that. This is last resort and becomes very time consuming when you have to resort to these types of chemicals. I'd like to try the dip desolver that dip-your-car offers, however it's very expensive and I didn't want to wait for shipping to get these wheels of (I had a weekend and was impatient). My suggestion would be to start with one panel, peel what you can, and then try goo gone or bug and tar and see how it goes from there. If it's a super pain you might bite the bullet and try dip desolver. Good luck!
Yeah I got some stubborn plasti dip on the trim of my side windows and nothing has worked might need to try a pressure washer and some brake cleaner lol
if the wheels are chrome or aluminum just use air craft stripper. will melt all the dip off down to original chrome or aluminum. no scraping. washes off with garden hose. $15 at orielys
Get a gallon of odorless Mineral Spirits and some of the blue shop towels. Takes it right off. Getting my M3 ready for paint and the dip over spray is everywhere. Just did the trunk and hood channels with about two ounces. Use the shop towel like a paint brush to keep the dip wet. Can use microfiber towel also. Know what is underneath and how it will react to the spirits, get ready to be happy, you can thank me later
Bought a car with plasti dip and it looked like whoever did it only did 1 coat because there are some parts on the rim will the plasti dip will not come off and I already used goo gone with a pressure washer to and it wouldn’t come off any sugestions on what other chemical to use to remove this stubborn plasti dip? I removed about 90 percent of the plasti dip on the rims but seeing some of it on the rim is a eye sore
I disagree. I used wd40 on my wheels 2 days ago.... SPRAY ONE COAT ON..LET IT SIT, SPRAY ANOTHER COAT, WIPE WHILE WET... comes right off... Dipped back in 2017. Clean as every. Gloss coating on the wheels too
It gets that way if left on too long too, 7 coats, came off fine after 2 months, different colour 7 more coats on a car parked in the sun for 7 months and it is an effing nightmare to remove
Have you tried mineral spirits mixed with water? Worked well for me. I was interested in other options though too because I wasn't 100% sure about the consequences if any, of mineral spirits.
+Jason Luke Thanks for the suggestion! That's one I'll have to add to the list for next time. Just be cautious of fumes since that is pretty serious stuff compared to the rest of these products.
GOO GONE SPRAY IS THE BEST. SPRAY IT ON AND LET IT SIT FOR ABOUT 30-45 MINUTES. USED A FEW RAGS AND WIPE IT DOWN. SHOULD COME OFF PRETTY EASILY. MIGHT NEED MORE THAN 3 RAGS FOR ALL 4 WHEELS.
Thanks for the video. I have a few layers of purple on my rims that has been there for about two years now, and I'm ready for a change. When I look at the plasti dip, it doesn't look like its going to peel very easily, so I just wanted to see what my options are for the removal part of the process.
So used Plasti Dip smoke on my tail lights. the break cleaner didn't seem even do anything other then shine them up. used paint stripper that made the Plasti Dip turn into like a freaking Super Glue. try the wheel cleaner. so I'm assuming that the plasti dip smoke is a totally different formula than what the Standard Plasti Dip stuff is made of.
+Powerd by HEMI I haven't tried the plasti dip smoke yet. That's interesting that you're getting different results though. Have you tried goo gone or bug and tar remover?
use the spray googone, soak the entire surface with a thick coat and let sit for 20 minutes. Pressure wash at close range. It comes right off
I used that method on my wheels, and it worked great
Thanks now I don't have to watch a 11 minute video for a 5 second response
2 years later, u know if it would work on a roof on a car?
The previous owner dipped it black and I would like to remove it, but little scared... hehe
And Goo Gone doesn't exist here I think.. :/ #Sweden
Authentic You can order it in if you want to play safe, DYC have their own solution that’s the same as De-Solv-It (their near identical)
I hope this works I got a whole ass car with plastic dip n now I regret it 😂
Wd40 worked great for me. The wd40 basically caused it to release from the rims and made it way easier to peel off. The wd40 is not for melting and wiping off the plasti dip. I used engine degreaser for the hard to remove spots and it straight up liquified the plasti dip making it very easy to wipe away.
Skip to 11 minutes if you want your question answered
Wow you weren’t kidding haha
Thank you! This could have been a 30 second video
Thank you. And I'm sorry if you watched the entire video lol
Just use gasoline, it’s easy I promise
I went to O'Reilly and bought a can of brake cleaner for 4.29 I sprayed let it sit about 10 minutes came back sprayed it again and it wiped off like makeup
Thanks for the help! Definitely go with Bug & Tar remover, especially for removing plasti dip from chromed plastics (grill)
Starting fluid, break cleaner, acetone, anything that smells extremely flammable works good.
diesel fuel it's an oil base that will take it off too
I will try these ideas I will let you know how it worked!
Active EJ USE CAR ACID CLEANER COMES STRAIGHT OFF
But it will damage the paint bro bugs & tar works best and will not damage the paint
Clorox & Windex mixed in a bottle works best!
Thanks for the tip. I was really struggling with my wheels. The break cleaner worked well.
ever try engine degreaser? started melting off as soon as I sprayed it on
Brake cleaner from auto zone works wonders, you just have to wipe as soon as you spray 👌🏽
You just saved me so much time, thank you

What really works and I tried on my wheels is white vinegar mixed with baking soda, just make sure you wear latex gloves if you are doing all 4 wheels.
I just bought mothers foaming bug and tar remover and armorall extreme bug and tar remover and it did absolutely "NOTHING". Thee only thing that i found that works is goo gone. Yea I've had good luck with mineral spirits or paint thinner. It literally almost melted off. Took a little scrubbing but made it way way easier
I''m never using plastidip again!!!! Easy to apply but nightmare to remove!!!
*easy to apply poorly
Several layers, 3 to 4 or more, you can peal the shit ofg
So helpful. I plasti dipped my motorcycle lavender and I need to sell it. Not sure a lot of people want a lavender sport bike 😅
*You should have removed the wheel first so that the products stay on the spokes.*
11 minutes? This video should have been 90 seconds.
O'Reilly's engine degreaser works really good to of you let it sit for a min
Plastidip is good at removing plastidip, no joke. Spray fresh plastidip over dry plastidip and it works like a charm.
as I'm watching your video I'm spraying on brake parts cleaner and you have to try it..for me it's melting right off..abit of stink but it's working wonders

does brake cleaner melt plastic? I'm trying to remove from plastic is why I'm asking.

Turpentine is hands down the best for all that doesn’t know and felt as if this selection was not enough for you.
I accidentally found out that pb blaster works best when I was putting new tires on my wheel, you should try it.
"Well, that settles it,!" leave that engine cleaner on there for about 5-10 & it WILL literally melt off. elbow grease optional. overspray wipes away as well.be careful tho, strong stuff, wont eat the paint

Will it damage paint for the hood ?
Pee on ur wheels and then wipe it off. It comes off instantly 👍
The wd-40 method works really well but the catch is you have to wait 40 to 50 minutes for it to work.

Mineral Oil worked for me like a champ. It requires some time, but does clean it off without any issue.
Glad I saw this, bought a car recently and the person before me botched a plasti dip job, ill be using goo gone to take that crud off
Use carb cleaner for unpainted surfaces it almost melts it off as soon as you spray it on

Use brake cleaner it's the best way to strip it, just make sure you can either take your tire off the rim or keep it off your tire as best as possible
Why do you prefer the bug and tar remover over the goo gone? Is it faster?
Easiest and cheapest way = Silicone Remover. Every Paintshop uses this to clean your car before applying new paint. So there will be no damage at all. Use it with a brush and then power wash when wet.

pb blaster or any acidic cleaner the make some for cleaning ac units spray it on and it washes right off
