I've known that kid since he was about seven years old and rated about 1600. He used to come to the local New Jersey tournaments. He was very precocious at that age. During analysis of games with good players (2000+) he wouldn't hesitate to interject with his opinions, which were usually correct or at least on the path of being correct. It was obvious even then that he had a bright future ahead of him. I played him a bunch of times as he cruised from about 1600 to 2000, at which point he and I would not be paired anymore. I know I got a couple of draws against him, and I believe he beat me once or twice. But I didn't beat him. I also played John Burke a bunch of times when he was about the same age, and he beat me every time. I did manage a draw against a seven year old Praveen Balakrishnan around the same time and felt fortunate to do so. It's actually exciting to see kids...the really young kids...who display legitimate talent.

You have to realize he doesn't spend a lot of time on his videos. This praising is a bit too much for his channel, he takes 1-2 hours at most for research (for his recap videos, or 10 minutes here), records the video and straight up uploads it, no editing. 1 hour after he records the video he has it uploaded. Compare that to other TH-camrs who can't afford to do this, his TH-cam work is easy.
He is entertaining but he doesn't edit his videos.

Leon's surname is pronounced "mendonsa" as you said, and it's actually of portuguese origin, not indian. He's from the state of Goa, which was a territory of portugal for over 400 years

Exactly, in portuguese we spell it Mendonça, with the "ç" pronunced a "s" in english. It would be interesting to know how he himself pronunces his name and why the spelling has changed.

I hope he loves playing! And if he burns out I hope he doesn't feel pressured (by his parents, by the community, by his own prior successes) to keep grinding through the unhappiness. Easy to forget that a child prodigy may have other dreams as they grow up.

I love how you ended the video so much. You show so much respect to him as a person acknowledging that he may not go on to be world champion and that we shouldn't make him feel obligated to try. I really hope he sees what you said, or at least has someone in his life letting him know that as well. He should be extremely proud of what he accomplished and decide for himself what he'll do going forward.

I think his attack's steam can easily be finished by a queen trade and then just block all pawns and play King back and forth and force a draw. Never do AlphaZero sacrifices, preserve every pawn.

For a king on e6, Qxh3+ gives the black king enough moves to escape from White's checks and hide behind the queen, at which point Black is two pawns up and those pawns cannot be stopped.
If the king starts on d5 instead, Qf5+ instead, and Black doesn't even need to take the white pawn; White still runs out of checks eventually, and Black unites king and queen near the black pawns to push them through by force.

That ending with the race of the pawns to the queen check at promotion reminds me of the ending of the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer.
This is exciting and Abhi has made a serious accomplishment. Not to mention he is a really kind and thoughtful kid in general. I just wish that older(or elderly) players were celebrated as much. Of course, children can become GMs. All they have to worry about is school and chess. I would like to see the chess world appreciate life-long players of the game, like FM Salvador Carias. Mr. Carias is still winning tournaments in his eighties.

This made me so happy. Your conclusion is fantastic! And yeah, we DON'T know what this kid's future is. He might be world champion some day, OR he might quit chess in a few years and take up Judo like Joshua Waitzkin from "Searching for Bobby Fischer". Who knows? His life, he can do whatever he wants. He DOES have a lot of hard work ahead of him to take the top spot, but I'm happy to watch this kid's games and support him either way.

Hi Levy, can you start releasing subtitles with your videos please? Your channel has grown pretty quick over the past few years, and roughly 8% of your TH-cam audience would choose to watch with subtitles (over 80000 subscribers). It’s good for accessibility, and those who have to watch in noisy spaces without headphones. I know you make lots of videos, but it shouldn’t take too long to write what you’ve said, and it wouldn’t cost much to hire a half decent subtitler/subtitling company for you (auto-subtitles wouldn’t work well enough for chess speak). Thanks for reading :)
#suggestion how about you pretend to be a chess beginner, hire a chess coach and see how they react when finding out you're actually a strong player?

Very nice to see Abhimanyu get the GM title after working as hard as he did and moving to Europe to play chess. I have a lot of respect for these young prodigies who work so hard to get great results.
