    Okay.... So the point of this is not to defend millennials, it's actually to establish the fact that he's above the younger half of his generation? That's the only main point defended in his argument.

    • @thehunt098
      @thehunt098 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He's highlighting something that is less talked about for Millennials. Some of us are in or around 30 years old. We're all not young 20s anymore. This last election cycle and how they reported Millennials' voting habits is a good example. They would cut off the older leg when reporting, neglecting those of us who are Millennials who 1: Voted 2:1 for Barack Obama, 2: Voting in bigger numbers compared to our younger end, which is in keeping with how we've been voting, and 3: Misrepresenting a whole generation's voting preferences in the DNC party nomination (When you add us in, HRC and Bernie were head to head, not overwhelming Bernie). I hope this explains why it's important to begin talking about Millennials getting older now.

      thehunt098 but you still have to understand that millennials born in the 90s does not represent whatever stereotypes were thrown at the millennials. He is basically saying, “hey we’re in our 30s and we do not act that way. You need to know that there are millennials who were born in the 80s.” This wasn’t collective, he’s basically saying we’re millennials but we do not act like one.

    I'm a millennial and I didn't get anything out if this speech. I watch these so I can have more things to say when I hear about our stereotypes. But this guy... I agree with what he said, but he started out with something good and divulged into something completely unrelated. I was hoping he would connect the talk about cities with the first part if the speech, but he did not. At all.

    Wow. This really frustrated me. I was born in 1993, and my brother-in-law, born in 1986, loves to talk about how horrible, lazy, narcissistic, and so on, Millennials are. But, of course, that only applies to those born after 1988 (the year my sister, his wife, was born). So this magically exempts him and my sister from being apart of the "entitled" Millennial generation. This is EXACTLY what this guy is doing. "Oh yes, this generation is horrible, but I'M not a part of it. It's everyone who's younger than me that's the problem." Ugh....

    • @thehunt098
      @thehunt098 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes and no. The difference is, he's using technology to define the differences among the generation. Your brother-in-law is using his own opinion which is based in emotion. One is not arbitrary and subjective. (I was born in 1984 and individuals were turning in our papers (book reports, essays) handwritten up until ~high school, to give an example.)

    • @terriewatson8828
      @terriewatson8828 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      thehunt098 - same and I was born in 85. Most of what the guy in the video is saying is situational and based on technology available when you were born and how you were raised. Those of us born in the earlier years saw the advancement of tech and adapted quickly whereas (and as he said) those born later were practically handed it (and the older generations often think it was on a silver spoon). Each generation has its struggles and each end of those generations have their own opinion - I just wish people would put the pettiness aside and work together for the future before another civil war starts.

    • @gamma21285
      @gamma21285 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      terrie watson Yeah I agree. There is a difference between those born in the 80's, maby even the early 90s, then those born later on

    • @tashboog
      @tashboog 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bc it’s true 🤷🏾‍♀️ That cohort is immensely mislabeled. You cannot couple the common experiences and trending behaviors/attitudes of those born in ‘82 to that of those born in ‘92.. there’s an overwhelming difference

    • @tashboog
      @tashboog 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      thehunt098 thehunt098 it’s not emotion, speaking by from his experience. And not arbitrary as his experience can be supported. If not, then science shouldn’t utilize people’s experiences of things and occurrences to measure variations.

      The non-point points are: millennials are diverse, some millennials are older and are acting like adults, it's worth thinking of millennials like half-full rather than half-empty money bags, millennials are urbanites and expert gentrifiers, millennials want to remake the urban space into a giant playground so that they can play with their babies and dogs.

      Somebody born in 1983, (me), has a very different experience than somebody born in 1989, (ex-wife), or my ex SIL, (born 1992). I have a TV older than my ex-wife for fuck sakes. I more closely identify with GenX than I do the Millenials. The speaker even referenced it. Look up "Oregon Trail Generation". My SIL never remembers a time when the USSR existed. My ex-wife never remembers a time when the DDR actually existed. I was 6 when the berlin wall came down, and couldn't figure out why news was covering a demo project, since walls fell every day for new buildings, (6 year old me had no clue about the significance of that moment).

      That people see millennial as people who don't contribute to society, economically and socially because we're always on our phones. What he's saying is that we do contribute and those who are young will grow up to have the needs like living in the city, dog parks, a good school and because we're so savy were not afraid to go looking for the best and leaving a car behind for it. That the way business is will change and should change to see us for what we really are and that's productive community members. Because what we buy and where we live is starting to make a difference in the economy and population. :) that's what I got from it.

    • @kurtsemler

      Millenials are "tech savvy" like I'm "cable system savvy". I was rasied with cable TV, so I would HOPE that I now how the fucker works. (you'd be suprised at how much Millenial/GenX lap are 100% CONVINCED that they need a cable box). Try plugging your TV into the wall just like you always have. Do a channel scan. Be surprised at analog is still on.
      This is basic knowledge. Yet, most of society doesn't know about this. It's pretty simple. You aren't "tech savvy" on cell phones, you just know how to use them. When's the last time you flashed an unofficial firmware to your phone? (probably never). When's the last time I did? Mid-last week. It's not exactly hard. You think you're "tech savvy". Yeah, right. I'll sit you down in front of a computer with NOTHING on it, (won't even boot). I'd like to see you get Debian running on it from NOTHING but a USB bootable net install drive. Guess what I'm running? That's right, a custom Debian Sid install.
      You aren't tech savvy at all. You take it for granted. OOH, you can double click on a HDD to mount it on a preconfigured Linux install. Try getting it to that point, and dealing with it saying you're running Zesty Zapus (development branch) 17.04, and it's not even public yet all because you installed manually bash 4.4 and are running 4.9rc1. Then correct it to identify as Yakkety Yak 16.10 manually.
      Millenials are "tech savvy" like my grandmother thought I was because I could use a VCR as a secondary TV Tuner. You do not impress me. We figured this shit out and taught you how to do this. You discovered nothing beyond taking pictures of your fucking food.
      Millenials (the snapchat ones), make me yawn out of boredom.

    Great Job, Ian! Hatw to break up the negative circle jerk but the point was Millennials think about the future and prepare for it far different than previous generations. We're not lazy at all. In fact we work far harder, far longer, for less money while carrying far more debt than any previous generation.

  • @hurbig
    @hurbig 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    What? I thought this was an act of defending your generation instead of cutting off the tip, in which you coincidentally are included, and explaining why the tip is not as bad as the rest. Millennials aren't any greater than the other generations but they aren't any worse either. It's just natural that you are not as experienced and still full of excitement, expectations and faith in yourself at the age of 20. When you grow older, you grow wiser. That does not mean that millennials can't be smart, they just lack the experience. Give us time, we will prove you all wrong.

      I don't know if he was pretending. I remember in college in 2000 a professor kept telling us to get email addresses so she could email assignments, and no one wanted to do it. Most people didn't have cell phones until 2001. Absolutely no one had laptops in college, and I graduated in 2003. Things must've changed quickly. Technically I'm Gen X (1973), but I don't feel like I'm Gen X. There's gotta be something in between. My generation (1973) grew up with Apple computers, Atari, Walkman's, CD's, etc. All of this new technology was coming out like crazy in the early 80's. It was a fantastic time! I was an early 80's kid. There was no major war going on either! No Vietnam and no Gulf War. I was in high school when the wall came down and the Soviet Union fell.
    People born around 1960-1970 had a very different experience than I did. Maybe these generations need to be by which decade you were born in or something.

    I too identify as being a xenial. I was born in 1984 one year after 1983, one year after they stop counting people as being xenials. This I take issue with. Listen people, they should continue to count people as being xenials up until the year 1986 not 1983. That is the year America truly began change, what with the NFA of 1986 and all. My dad was an Army vet, he left me a small gun collection and a small ammo collection to go along with it. Here in the PRC, the People's Republic California they took it all from me. Yeah Liberals are the true Nazis. I am a xenial, born after 1983, very pro-constitution, label me as conservative or liberal, whatever you want, it doesn't matter to me I'm non-partisan. That being said I know better then to vote for the party that is anti-constitution, the leftist stateist liberals. I've never voted Democrat in my life.

    I don't understand why there is such a desire to please the generations of the past, the progress of humankind has been forwarded by the differences in generations, being different and thinking differently is what leads to innovation. It frustrated me that there is such a movement towards a backward-orientated outlook, "playing with a stick" is the considered to be the 'best' way to grow up. To me there should be no shame in embracing technology and new trends - this is progress, why are we trying to run away from it? I don't see the need to have a pessimistic outlook on the world and change.

    This is terrible. What he basically did is defend those who were born in the 80s and slam those “punks” born in the 90s.
    Know what, hey. I’m born in ‘92 and I do not act like what those stereotypes say but if people dress that way, act that way, I don’t care. We all have self expression. I do not need to conform to ridiculous standards just to be accepted. I don’t have to get up the stage do a talk about how I am soo different from the later millennials. I thought this would uplift the whole generation but as I continue on, this is nothing different from boomers trashing children because of whatever idiotic observation they had.

    Right here with ya.....I was born in 1982 and I don't classify myself as a "Millennial". When I was 14, we did not have cell phones, and social media such as Facebook was not out until I was a Senior in COLLEGE. People from my time also have VERY different viewpoints and personalities compared to people born in the late 90's, and I don't consider myself a "digital native". In reality, generation boundaries cannot be defined solely by a "birth year" as demographers like to portray. If anything, they should create a "Generation XY" for people like us.

    • @moodSlime_

Other names for this micro-generation include: Xennials, Generation Catalano (that one sounds cool!), and The Lucky Ones (or Unlucky Ones...after all the confusion and distress of being a cusper). To be accurate, we are basically a sub-group of Gen X, since people born before 01/01/1983 are not Millennials (the 3rd Millennium started in 2001).

    • @GenXer82
      @GenXer82 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Critical Mass Yeah, generations are very subjective, since everyone has different interests, values, and experiences...it's more based on trends (before 2016...the only generation I heard of was the Boomers). A "Strauss & Howe Millennial" ranges from 1982-2004, which is rather broad and in reality, covers Late GenXers, Gen Y, and Early Gen Z...so you safely fall under that. Otherwise, you can just call yourself an "XYZ Hybrid" or something. There's no formal name for this, but good question! (there are many different scales and none are set & stone)

    The speaker says 1980-2000 as the birth years for millennials, a real 20 year span (which is the 20 year span required to define generations), but the transcript and close captioning says 1982-2000. The transcript and CC is not matching what the speaker is actually saying and is misleading people who are hard at hearing.

      @GenXer82 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess it really doesn't make a difference because the birth years for millennials would actually be 1983-2001 (since the 3rd Millennium started in 2001). But really...nobody born in the early 80's should be thrown into this generation. Obviously, we are not "digital natives" and we share different experiences and pop culture compared to youngsters in their teens and 20's.

    Weird thinking of yourself as a millennial in the national sense when you're almost 30 and prostate cancer and gray hair becomes a thing. But mass media has us pinned down with social media? Kinda tiring.

  • @Kemet1987

    He basically said..ask not what Millennials can do for you, but what you can do for millennials. We are the largest generation with a high spending margin. Our children will be a product of us and most of us are entrepreneurs in spirit so if they don't give us what we want we will create our own thing. Number 1 we value education and knowledge.

  • @artzreal
    @artzreal 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    so,what he tells in the end is that most millennials aren't as bad as next generation,but have nothing to do with the ones who fought wars so we can be free. no we didn't got you wrong. getting together and have a good time is not that much of a value. few millennials have the brain to at least see they are soft and spoiled, even that being their parents fault.

    I was born in 1998 and I grew up playing Halo ce on pc, the Windows Xp.👌🔥 But also, I'm not sure I actaully qualify as a Millennial. I've heard that Gen Z really starts at 1997, so I don't really know to be honest. And I hate skinny jeans and big, stuffy, liberal cities with a passion. I'm all about outside.🏞 I LOVED the ending of this video!

    Why exactly do most millenials want to live in cities??

  • @wolfrayet2082

    I was born in 82. My whole life I had to work hard for what I needed let alone what I wanted. Sure I noticed lots of kids having everything they needed. But there were also a few I knew from my neighborhood who had no choice but to work for what they wanted. You don't get toys, you get chores. You wan't to go to college? Go to work and save for it. So this whole putting the millennials at blame is exactly that, laying blame. I had been in situations where gen x was blamed for having poor leadership skills and more of an expectancy that they should have the life they're parents had. I have worked for some lazy hacks twice my age that had told me my hard work was a waste of time, because I was born under the wrong circumstances. But that was my experience. This whole topic annoys me because I happen to just be at the beginning of it. Before my grandfather passed at 90 years old. He told me how families lived during the great depression. They had nothing, they found what they could wherever they could to trade for what they needed, and they never gave up. Take the time to invest in yourself. And beware those who would lay the blame on others as I see lately. Take some accountability and responsibility towards the situation and do something with it. There has always been someone trying to point the finger. And sometimes I see gen x as the generation of poor management and paranoia. I broke my back working hard for what turned out to be ungrateful management. I guess that's what happens when you have people lying about skills for the job, and then when they get there they can't produce. And then they get upset when a kid half they're age points out that's not how we were trained to do it.

      It was never a divide between generations. It's always been a divide between the rich and the poor. It is those with power that leave a mark in history. The books we read in high school are not the pulp fiction that working class people liked to read, just as we assume the modern millennial is upper middle class, even if they are but a minority.
