    You've just answered my prayers Glenn. I've been searching for a synth but with the ability to quickly play along to a drum, bass and arpeggiator backing. I didnt want an arranger keyboard and i've had a montage in the past but was way way too time consuming to do what you've achieved in minutes with the Juno. Now looking to get one of these. Thank you Glen for all your explanations and time and effort put into this you are great, I own a old Roland XP-50 that was given to me in a dead state plus 3x broken keys, as I am a retired electronic technician I set about repairing the smps ( power supply) then the main pcb plus recapped all the capacitors and 2x faulty series voltage regulators and the DAC chip, the keyboard is now fully operational with 4x SR-JV80 - 03 - 04 - 08 - 16 expansion cards installed, but I am still learning to play the jolly thing as I have never learned to play during my working so that is the hard part for me, cheers.

    Thanks for the great tutorial. I've been enjoying my Juno-X and am already pretty fast at navigating the menus and screens and such. One quick question, as I'm still trying to understand how the keyboard affects the parts being controlled by the step sequencer. I copied your settings exactly to recreate your demo sequence on my Juno. (Only substituting the one pad on Part 1, since I don't have the JD-800 installed.) When I have only the bass (Part 3) active and running on the arp, it plays fine by pressing single notes in the left hand, since the "Hold" button is active. However, as soon as I play a chord with the right hand, above the key range "high" setting, while it doesn't play any notes (as expected) it immediately stops the note that was automatically holding in the bass. Does your demo scene you used for this video do the same? If the Key Range high setting is set, and I play ABOVE that setting, I can't figure out why it cancels out the bass note that's down below the key range cutoff note. It's frustrating, but maybe I'm just not familiar with how the step sequences behave when playing the keys.

    • @DavRBailey
      @DavRBailey ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looks like I jumped on the comments section just a moment too soon. Dug into the manual further and learned that at the bottom of the "Key Range Settings" screen are two settings under "Arp Common" for "In Range Low" and "In Range Up". These settings tell the arp which keys to pay attention to when you're pressing the keys. Mine had defaulted to the full range of the keyboard, so playing right hand keys was cutting off the left hand bass. As the manual states: "Pressing a key outside the specified range does not affect the arpeggio function." Problem solved! 🙂

    Hi Glenn! Thanks so much for putting this together. I tried to recreate it so I can learn the process, and I'm coming along an annoying problem. When I start the arpeggiator, and I have all 4 synth voices set to on, anytime that I play outside of the unison bass range (so as to play the chord synths) it turns the bass off. I've made the exact changes to the keyrange per voice as you did in your video, and I'm still unsure why it does this. Help! :)

    • @fedchavez6098
      @fedchavez6098 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the way...when I turn the Step Key Shift off on the Unison Bass, then I am able to play the other voices without the bass silencing like it does when step key shift is on. If you have any tips, I'd be super appreciative. Thank you!

    • @GlennMainMusic
      @GlennMainMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try to set the key range according to the transpose you made. I had the same problem, but the sequencer just understands what key you’re actually plying in the scale you set it in. So if you transpose the bass -12, then you have to do the same within the key range 😃

  • @boundlessmind5083
    @boundlessmind5083 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Thank you. You answered exactly every question I had regarding the sequencer. The only thing I'd like to know is: After you sequence, can you turn back on the i-arp in order for it to create variations on your sequence and/or can you sequence the drums, the bass, let i-arp handle 2 parts and play the last part?

    • @GlennMainMusic

    I am using my Virus TI2 synth for this since it can emulate the Roland Juno plus let me create and play up to 16 multi timbral parts at one time so can have drums, bass, fx, and pads and the arpegigiator is super amazing! Thanks for this video. How would you program darkwave versus synthwave?

    • @GlennMainMusic
      @GlennMainMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Virus is an awsome synthwave monster too :-) If I should make darkwave i probably look for some cool fat pads with more motion to it, and some more "reverbed" textures as well... and use my keytar as the "guitar" 🙂

    Hi, Can anybody you please provide me advise on the following:
    How do I setup the arpeggios on a Juno-X, so that they play independent from each other other multiple keyboard splits? I tried to setup keyboard ranges for each parts, but no matter what I do the arp's do not play independent. Play an arp on one split and it affects the arps on other split. It looks like the arps cannot be separated and are triggered by the entire keyboard, despite the key ranges. Thank you in advance

    • @GlennMainMusic
      @GlennMainMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is the key range setup. But be sure to have the main key change on “0” if it’s up or down octaves then you have to take that into consideration regarding your key range on every part. I think that might be the problem.. 😃

  • @theguillaumedu44

    Thank you for this video. I just picked up a Juno X and the manual is a bit overwhelming.
    Since you have the JD-800 model expansion, could you make a video about editing a sound in that model? The JD-800 is my favorite synth (have had one since 1994), but it's too risky to gig with it. I'm wondering how easy it is to create and edit sounds with the Juno X's limited controls (compared to the JD-800) before spending the money on the model expansion. Thanks!

    • @GlennMainMusic
      @GlennMainMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello:) And thanx for watching. In the Roland Cloud you can download the Juno X editor for free, and the JD800 editor as well. I did not try to edit so much except the “obvious” things like cutof and Amp settings.. but the editor looks really nice, and it gives a great overview of the synth. But I will sit down with it and try it out more in depth 😃😃😃

    Glenn, many thanks for getting me started with my Juno X. I'm now working on Top Gun and The Musical Box (Genesis). I've been through your tutorial a couple of times; what am I doing wrong? At 13:17, you start playing the chords over the bass and drums. As soon as I select a key in the top range, my bass stops but the drums keep on going. Any idea why this might be? Thank in advance, like and subscribed. All the best.

    • @GlennMainMusic
      @GlennMainMusic  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much:) I think its a «key range» problem. Its important to set the top key for the bass, or else it might “think” that it’s supposed to play, and that cuts the sound.
      And also check that you are not using the transpose (octave) when playing … maybe that solves the problem :)

    It really annoys me how inconsistent Roland are with these arpeggio features - I mean my JD-XA has a similar programmable arpeggiator but I have no idea why they couldn't have included the same with the System-8 for example.

    I followed the instructions in your video but I cannot get the arpeggios to play independent from each other. I set the key ranges, switched to ARP-MODE to STEP (even tried NORMAL ARP), but for some reason the arps are not independent. When I play the arp on the left-side of the keyboard it influences the arp on the right-side and vice versa. You can play the arp on one side of the keyboard without triggering the arp on the other side. But when you play both right and left side of the keyboard, the time is divided over both arpeggios, as if playing one big single arpeggio. For example: the left side suppose to play a 1/8 note arpeggio. This is the case when only the left side is played. Same for the right side arpeggio (e.g. set to 1/16 note). When played together the rhythm of both arpeggios in changed. It seems the left side arp is waiting for the right side arp to finish.
    What am doing wrong here? It is really frustrating me. On my Yamaha Montage I set the key ranges for each arpeggio. I cannot find a similar function on the Juno-X. There are some settings in the ARP COMMON section called In Range Low - In Range Up, but these seem to affect the key range for ALL arpeggio's not individual parts.

      I’m not quite sure , but did you set the key range for the split points ? They can be a bit tricky to set right if the synth has been transposed or octave change is enabled.. see if this can be the problem, and feel free to let me know if it doesn’t work ;) And I will do my best to help you 👍

      Hi Glenn,
      I did set the key ranges for each part in the key range settings. What do you mean with octave ranges enabled? Are there other options to consider? Thank you for your help.

    Glenn, any advice on what synth I’d need to add to my current portfolio of Juno-X and Juno DS88? When I asked the salesguy at Guitar Center about the Fantom-07, he said the Juno-X does the same except Fantom is a workstation. What say you?

    Great video Glenn 👏Just to make sure I understand correctly: You have to setup the parts into different key ranges in order to make sure each part can play its own arp, without being triggered by other parts. Does this also work for the Jupiter-X?

    Brilliant video Glenn!! I really appreciate you diving into this synth and showing how someone would really use this to create some music. I take it this arrangement is all stored as part of the Scene? I’m also guessing you select which parts you activate on the keyboard at any given time for playing so you don’t play this drum sounds while playing the lead? Thanks!

    • @GlennMainMusic
      @GlennMainMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanx for watching :) You can store it all in a «Scene» and you can also store multippel scenes with variations that you can trigger seamlessly non stop.
      On the right of the screen on the Juno there are switches to enable and disable the 4(5) tracks, and on the left side you press 1-5 button to chose what track you are playing :) So that’s where I switch between the piano and polysynth. You can of course switch on all 4(5) parts at once an play them as layers of you want.
      The reason why I refer to 4-5 tracks is that the 5. Track is the drum part :)

      @@GlennMainMusic very cool. Seems pretty intuitive. It is a bit strange that’s the step sequencer is inside the arpeggiator and not out on its own, but I think you are the only one on TH-cam right now actually doing some in depth examination on how to build songs on this or set up arrangements for live play. Awesome job, and I look forward to seeing more!

    Will it only do one measure of 4 beats? Can you string together scenes to make a short song?

    • @GlennMainMusic
      @GlennMainMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can.. but then you should consider the Roland MC 707… that’s a great sequencer loaded with great sounds… :) The Juno X is not a workstation .. the sequencer is more a phrase thing, although you can of course chain scenes to make a song, but it’s not ideal 😃😃

    • @jacka55penguin
      @jacka55penguin ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure it's not a workstation. But it's "features" are a bit of a head scratcher. It's so close to being cool. I personally think they should keep the architecture of the JD-Xi and expand on that concept by combining the juno-X "sounds".....You can't even record automation on the X. like you can the Jd-Xi. At least it's 5 part multi-timbral but that's really the only real feature worthy of note. It's got speakers nobody really needs. I mean why? It's got 2 headphone jacks. Silly

    • @jacka55penguin
      @jacka55penguin ปีที่แล้ว

      And the fake chorus noise? That's the dumbest thing about this synth. it sounds awful. I pull it down. The original chorus is what gives those old Roland synths the character that made them desirable in the first place. I mean this isn't a cheap synth. You can buy an original Juno 106 for less that what this thing costs. But it does have 5 part multi. Shrugs.

    • @GlennMainMusic
      @GlennMainMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching, and a great question .. I’ve had the same issue myself for a while. But it is all about the settings in the “key range” edit. If the bass part goes higher than the actual split , then the bass part will think that it will play the note over the split point.. so then it just trigger an “empty” sound. So check out the key range edit 😃

      I cannot figure this out. I followed your guide. Unison or not, if I try to play part2 (pads) in the key range I designated for it, part 1(bassline) will stop triggering. Am I missing something? I’ve set both key ranges to be in their designated areas. 🤯 🆘
