  • During a Reddit AMA with Errol Morris and Joshua Oppenheimer, legendary film director Werner Herzog revealed that his biggest fear...is chickens.
"Look into the eyes of a chicken and you will see real stupidity. It is a kind of bottomless stupidity, a fiendish stupidity. They are the most horrifying, cannibalistic and nightmarish creatures in the world."
Directed by Siri Bunford. Shot by Tom Streithorst.

i just today saw a video of a stickbug freaking out because a caterpillar was crawling on it. i’d say you have to be at least a little intelligent to dislike an experience.
you seem to forget that insects are very small and live very different lives than we do, and whatever intelligence is there may be very hard for us to recognize.
you can’t say a fish can’t feel pain just because it can’t scream. well, you can’t say an insect isn’t intelligent just because it can’t look you in the eye.
and sure, moths are attracted to light. but that’s not because they’re stupid! they evolved to navigate by moonlight, and our streetlamps and such have simply developed faster than they have evolved to compensate. it confuses the most basic part of their brain as they’re trying to fly. humans can be confused and hypnotized from basic instincts, too.
insects live in a different world than us. we happen to have the ability to control many aspects of their world, which in turn affects the way they react to it. i think it’s a mistake to assume we’ve done the equivalent of program some biological computer, as if just because they have exoskeletons they are machines. we’ve simply changed their conditions, and some of the conditions we change may not be changes they have evolved to cope with. that doesn’t mean they’re not intelligent.
you can imagine huge aliens abducting us, and taking us to some dark room and watching us bump into each other, and say “oh, how stupid, they can’t see in the dark,” you know, “look, they’ve all stopped moving” (because we can’t see what we’re doing) “they’re so stupid they think they’re dead!”

you have to do yourself a favor when you are out in the countryside and you see chicken try to look at checking
in the eye with great intensity and the intensity of stupidity that is looking back at you it's just amazing

It will be quite knocked out; it won't do tricks. Then give it a little push up its rear end and watch it meander away. I have seen it done; it's quite amusing.

My chickens are very stupid indeed, but contrasting this they also at times show great intelligence, just in their own niche of intelligence.
For instance: they learn new food sources and remember them sometimes having been only being exposed to the source one time.
Also I find they are highly coordinated which does take a good bit of processing power I imagine.
