I just installed this after taking it to Subaru of Little Rock yesterday and getting nowhere. They had absolutely no idea what I was talking about and msde me feel stupid. Thanks for this super helpful and easy to follow video! I am now updated and thrilled about it!
We also just went to the dealer last week. I'm in Japan and you'd expect they should know (being the country of manufacture) but no. They had no idea. The had to check and thankfully understood what we're talking about. Guy said it would 2 hours though so we needed another appointment.
This is great. I have to say we almost got rid of our 2022 because of things like the seat heaters being buried in menus. We learned we'll never buy another car that doesn't have real buttons and knobs for at least the major controls but this update should at least makes it a bit less of a pain than it was.
This worked perfectly. Very easy to do for anyone who knows just a little about computers. Took a total of 1/2 hour. Dealer wanted to charge $110 since my 2020 Outback is over 3 years old and off warranty.
Thank you! I have a 2020 Outback and my dealer didn't know anything about the 2023 update so he wouldn't do it. I did it myself thanks to your EXCELLENT and CLEAR instructions!
I just did the Nov 2023 update for my 2021 outback xt, it took about 15 to 20 min to complete the upload and it worked flawlessly, it also updated my maps. Thanks for the info.
Worked on 2020 Outback Touring😁 Side note when you insert your flash drive wait a few minutes for it to recognize it. Mine took like 3 minutes. Thanks so much!!!
I have a 2021 Outback Touring. I followed your instructions exactly as you provided, and it worked perfectly for me. Thank you for posting this - extremely helpful!
I just came back from the dealer for regular maintenance and was told there were no new software updates available! not sure why they lied to me. followed this instruction and worked like a champ! Thanks.
Excellent video! I have a 2022 OBW that is well out of warranty (60,000 miles now) and the dealership wanted to charge me $175 to update the software. Your instructions enabled me to do it myself, only having to buy a 16GB memory stick for $6. It was a little confusing to me to figure out what files to download (for the Nov 2023 update) and how to do that and how to un-zip them, but I finally figured it out. I also had trouble getting into the Dealership Mode. I think the problem was the speed at which I was pressing the Tune button (I was pressing the button too slowly, I think). I found out I could also do it on the driver's side, using the temperature controls on that side and pressing the Volume button 6 times. The update took about 15 minutes on my OBW, and I'm sure if I would have taken it to the dealership it would have taken at least 2 hours. Thanks for the DIY instructions that helped save some $$ and time!
I can confirm that it works on a Subaru Outback Limited 2022 from Canada. I just installed this new firmware update and it's GREAT!!! Finally heated seats on the main menu! The bigger buttons are a welcome addition! Yeah! And when you get in the car, the menu starting is a lot snappier. It's not sluggish anymore. THAT'S a major addition too. Hurray!

I also find the system a lot more responsive now. Way to go Suburu and this video for helping me upgrade.
Thank you for posting this! I just purchased a 2020 Outback Limited from the dealership, a "Certified Used Car" and none of the updates had been done. It would seem Subaru would do this before selling one of their Certified cars. Subaru could do better! These instructions were clear and correct and I like the look of the new display. Thanks again!
Aside from how long it took me to extract these files, I kept getting errors when transferring them to a flash drive. It had 126 GB so it was large enough and yet the issue persisted. I then had to convert my flash drive’s format from Fat32 to NTFS to allow for the supposedly large file size. This ultimately worked! In case anyone else has those same issues.
The maximum size of an individual file in the FAT32 file system is 4GB. NTFS and ExFAT don't have that limitation. Going to attempt this on my 20 Outback Premium today, fingers crossed.
Thank you for your very straightforward and easy to follow instructions. I successfully did the update because of it. And, living in a more rural place where getting to a dealership is a bit of a pain, and time commitment, I GREATLY appreciate it. Again, thank you.
I can confirm it works on my 22 Outback Wilderness, which in Canada does not have NAV, so I downloaded the MID update. Thanks! Quality of life massively improved!
This was incredibly helpful. Thank you SO much. I did the same thing with the 2023 Nov update and it fixed the android auto issue as well so that is now full screen. FINALLY, the screen I paid for is doing what it's supposed to. Thank you!
The giant screen is why I got my 2020 Legacy and I can't even utilize the full thing with Android Auto so it's been such a disappointment these last four years. Please tell me there's an update where I can actually utilize the full screen and get what I paid for.
Great Video! If anyone is wondering this update is so much smoother than the older one and it finally uses the full screen for when you use auto play rather than just 1/4 of the screen!

I can confirm this works for 2020-2022 Subaru Legacy as well. Now my 22 Legacy has same climate controls like shown in this video. Just be careful with choosing correct firmware version
Thanks. I have installed this on a 22 Outback Limited and Legacy Limited. Great improvements. Appreciate your making these files available and the video.
Oh, my God!!! Such a relief, now the Infotainment system just works!!! I only hope that one day the will fix the firmware for the jerky CVT (on XT version) and I will be able to enjoy the car in full.
One specific learning I came across is that IT MATTERS what grade of USB drive you use. At first I used a cheap off-brand one and it failed to install. I switched to one listed in service bulletin (that had much higher speeds) and it worked like a charm!
This entire process worked exactly as you described. It installed without any problems. About 1/2 hour. It works much better than the original software. Thanks for doing this. 21 Outback Limited
Just did it on my 202 Outback Touring worked perfectly exactly as in these instructions. Bit of a panicky moment as the progress bar got to almost the end and seemed to stop. Patience needed there as it did finish after a few minutes and now I have the new display layout. Thank you.
Upgraded 2020 Outback Limited in about 30 minutes. seemed to remember that I needed to use the drivers side temp and volume controls to get to the dealer setting as well. Worked great, thank you!
Just another comment to say thank you for this great video explanation and for the heads up on where/how to get the files. Worked on the first try. Took 21 min for my 22 outback touring xt.
Hi, thank you for showing us how to do the update ourselves! I had the latest over the air update, and uthe newest version by USB F31BMM151-680. The update took about 50min but well worth it!
Just installed the November 2023 update in my 2021 Outback with the above video as a guide. FULL SCREEN Android Auto is finally here for 2020-2022 Outbacks!!!! Thank you for the info!!!
Thank you so much. Just updated my 2022 Outback with premium package. For some reasons, it took me 1 hour 15 minutes to install the new software. It works perfectly. Thanks again.
Hi - thanks for the video. I have a 2020 legacy and I was able to update the infotainment through the wireless SW upgrade. I noticed that this was just released within the last few weeks as I tried before that it said no update SW found. So if you have your Subaru setup with home WI-FI then you can just click on the SW update from your car.
Thanks sir, just did this on my 2020 premium and it worked great. No more extra steps to turn the heated seats on. : ) Also.... Had this on a couple weeks now and I notice no more random resets. The whole display used to occasionally black out and reset maybe a couple times a week. I haven't seen this one time since the update.
Did it with my 2021 Legacy Touring XT. Very easy. Installing Windows 11 on a new PC I recently built was more convoluted.😄 Definitely no need for me personally to make an appointment with my dealer 25 miles away.
Thanks for the tutorial. I just installed the update on my 2022 Outback Onyx and it went flawlessly, though it took an even 60 minutes to upload it from the flashdrive.
I am not sure if this is relevant, but I tried two times to enter dealership mode, and both times I could only get factory mode. So, I turned off the car unplugged my echo auto that was plugged into a USB port in the backseat and started the process over again, and it immediately went into dealership mode. Just in case anyone else has this problem. Once the install was complete, everything works fine and the new buttons are in place.😊
Bro! It worked on my 2020 outback. Thank you so much 👍🏼 The infotainment did blank on my first attempt midway, but I'm glad it worked out on the second attempt. Seems like Android auto still only takes half of the screen though, Subaru ugh...
YES did the same on my Outback Limited 2020 in canada. still Half screen for android Auto. This is the most important Update that I would like to have.
Due to "user error" I failed in the first several attempts. But, I figured out, finally, I was downloading the 2022 update, not the March 2023 update. It went smooth after I got the correct update. I now have the new Infotainment Interface in my 2022 Legacy. Yay!!!
Thank you for posting this along with the files. I was able to update my 2022 Outback (high) using a Mac formatted flash drive (Journaled, Master Boot Record). My car required me to run through Appendix A steps, but otherwise everything went smoothly.
Thank you. This worked perfectly on my 2022 Outback Wilderness. Was very easy to do. Only took about 20-30 minutes including getting the files onto the thumb drive.
Thanks much for the help here. Seems to me that "check software version" should be on every service checklist at the dealer, but clearly it's not on mine, because my 2022 Outback was two versions behind despite having been serviced twice since I've owned it. My dealer is a fair distance away, so I appreciate being able to do this on my own. I've been griping about those tiny fan buttons the whole time I've had the car!
Worked LIKE A CHARM thanks! I did convert my usb from FAT32 to NTFS which was easy. 2020 Touring XT so the ventilated seat buttons do indeed appear right next to the heated seat buttons! Because there are two buttons there they are smaller/square to take up the entire space of the larger rectangle heated seat buttons. Works great, seems to have sped up responsiveness of the entire system! Thanks again...
This is great, thanks! I just updated my '22 OBW. Now the only remaining issue is to change the button for the rear hatch so that it allows two open positions, the way it used to work on my 2019 Forester. I have a low ceilinged garage and never open the hatch indoors because of the need to futz with too many menus. The button currently just disables the proximity key from opening the hatch. Switch that to the buried menu and restore the button to its previous function!
Great information, but, be aware that once you start the update you no longer have access to any controls for heat, fan, Auto Start Stop, etc. I've read people on forums using this and driving while updating. Be sure to disable the Auto Start Stop function before starting the update if you will be driving during the update. If you are driving the engine will shut off when you stop possibly interrupting the update and causing it to fail. Ask me how I know.
I can also confirm this works on my 2022 Outback Wilderness. Not sure if the dealer will do this or not. But it's not hard to do. Did this all on my Mac computer. Took 30min to install.
Glad to have helped another Wilderness owner! Dealerships will do this. The TSB number for this update is in the video description for anyone who wants the dealer to perform this upgrade.
@@wildxtrek Just curious, I am a prospective Subaru owner, and wondering since the dealership would do this, would they charge a service fee for doing this? Would it matter whether in warranty or out of warranty?
That's interesting. I got an email message from Subaru Canada in October saying that the new software was available OTA for my '22 OBW. Of course, when I tried to do the update, it said I already had the latest version. I wrote Subaru and a couple of weeks ago they finally (and apologetically) responded, saying, okay, now it really was available. I made an appointment at the dealer and had them do it two weeks ago. It was not the latest release. While sitting in the waiting room for three hours, I searched online and found that this newer version was released a week beforehand. The dealer was not aware of it, saying they're usually three months behind. This update process is the one I've used to update the maps on my old Forester's navigation system, so I'll try this right now. I didn't know where to get the firmware. Thanks for doing this video!
Thank you so much. I had been waiting forever for OTA update. Glad to see your guide here. It took me 1 hour for update. I don’t know if it’s because I’m using an old flash drive or I plugged my flash drive in the slow port. I only noticed while waiting for update that one of my usb port was marked 2.1a. I should have used that instead.
I have a 2022 OB XT and this update worked fine, but it will not make Android Auto full-screen if you're wondering, I use a dongle that emulates Apple Carplay to make AA full screen and it works very well, I'll also add I just had a '23 Ascent for a week as a loaner with the wireless AA built in and I had a lot of disconnection issues which I haven't seen with the dongle (Pixel 7 phone, Ottocast U2-x pro dongle)
@@beganny Yes, both - the dongle actually makes the car think AA is Apple Carplay so it displays it full screen - the screen is a tiny bit stretched but IMO it's hardly noticeable after a while. I've had full button/screen functionality with AA coolwalk.
I've had an ottocast for about 6 months. It was giving me full screen wireless android auto even before the update. The update provided the better heated seat buttons, etc, but didn't make any difference with Android Auto, which was already much improved with the dongle. I also got one for my wife's Toyota, which had carplay but not AA. Now it also has wireless android auto despite Toyota's refusal to support it in her 2018.
This worked well for me (2022 Outback Limited with navigation), although I first downloaded the zip file to the flash drive and tried to unpack the files there. Later moved the zip file elsewhere and then unpacked onto the flash drive. Install took about 20 minutes and the new interface seems much more responsive. Would love to see full screen Android Auto. Hope that is in a future update.
My dealer did mine under warranty; HVAC controls are a nice improvement. But wish it included wireless CarPlay, like the 2023 has. 8 month old car, 40+k I think this would be a nice feature to offer us.
I have a 2020 Outback. To get to dealership mode on mine I had to press and hold the driver’s side temperature controls and hit the tune button 6 times. It wouldn’t work using the passenger side controls. Otherwise no hiccups and the update seems to be working just fine.
Thanks much, worked for me, for my '22 Limited Outback. Interesting that I got official email from Subaru explaining how to update using the OTA (wifi) method, but that definitely did NOT work...I got the screen that told me the software was already up to date (which it definitely was not). I don't really care all that much about the button placement etc, but Im Really hoping this update helps with the stability and responsiveness of the entire head unit, because from what I can see and from what I've read, the head unit / Nav system is the one biggest downfall of Subarus. Thx again.
Just installed yesterday, took 30 min, not much added but looks good, not sure thou is the latest update, drove new outback few weeks back and it was more on screen....just saying...thanks for the video and links
I can confirm that the engine does not need to be on. I had none in the ON position, i stayed in the vehicle and did not open the door. Dealer mode can also be done with the driver side temp buttons and the volume knob.
Things can go bad if there is a power interruption. From the technical service bulletin: "Once the update begins, the screen below will be displayed with a progress bar. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for the update to complete. VERY IMPORTANT: NEVER turn off the ignition while the software update is in process." 4a) Perform the update in a well ventilated location if updating with the engine running OR with the ignition ON and a battery charger connected."
Nick is correct! please make sure you format your USB in a MAC using "Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)" otherwise it will fail to install around 75%
I just did this on my 2022 outback. Worked like a charm and took less than 30 minutes! When I went to the site, I had to download all 3 files vice individual ones because I got a "limit reached" type of message. Other than that, the new display is much better. EXCEPT there's still no full screen android!!!! WTF subaru?!
Did exactly what you said to do and updated my wife's 2022 OB with nav. The map is still small? Should I redownload the High version again and try again? or take it to the dealer? Thanks for the video it is great.
Perfect! I've been looking for a USB update guide like this for my OBW. Any idea if it needs to stay in Park for the whole process? Anyone tried this yet? Gas is too expensive to be idling this long 😅
In theory, you can do this while driving. I’ve done previous updates while driving because it was taking so long and I had places to be. I don’t recommend it, as the updates MAY affect AC and EyeSight controls while the update is running.
As noted in an earlier comment, the update went w/o issues, and things have been working well. So, now that we've made the jump to the '2023' version for my 2021 Outback, How will the 'future' updates appear (new category?) - to continue with the 2023 conversion in place? Also, for FYI, just encountered an issue with Apple Carplay failing to activate 3-days ago. Might be related to Gen 6 vehicles and the Subaru Starlink App being integrated into the MySubaru App. It appears to be a somewhat known issue, yet no joy in getting it to work on a regular basis. Again, Thanks kindly for posting!!

Also.... Had this on a couple weeks now and I notice no more random resets. The whole display used to occasionally black out and reset maybe a couple times a week. I haven't seen this one time since the update.
Which version did you download??
@@hidaven I used the 2020 high version, my car has navigation.
@@vr6muppet thanks pal
Did it with my 2021 Legacy Touring XT. Very easy. Installing Windows 11 on a new PC I recently built was more convoluted.😄 Definitely no need for me personally to make an appointment with my dealer 25 miles away.
Thanks for the tutorial. I just installed the update on my 2022 Outback Onyx and it went flawlessly, though it took an even 60 minutes to upload it from the flashdrive.
Great help...THANKS ! It all worked out, with a little help from my daughter, just perfectly. Love new display.
One site said to have the dealer do it if under warranty. I have a '21 Touring Outback. Your instructions are great, thank you.
Thank you so much 👍🏼
The infotainment did blank on my first attempt midway, but I'm glad it worked out on the second attempt.
Seems like Android auto still only takes half of the screen though, Subaru ugh...
YES did the same on my Outback Limited 2020 in canada. still Half screen for android Auto. This is the most important Update that I would like to have.
thanks was able to update my 2022 wilderness. took about 20mins way faster then the taking to the dealer.
Just added the HIGH update with Nav onto a '22 Outback Wilderness! Works perfectly, thank you so much for this video!!
04/08/24 just did the update and it worked great on a 2022 wilderness outback
thanks for the info. my 2022 Outback Touring updated with out a hitch, I am a happy camper. keep up the good info
Just finished this update on my '20 onyx xt, it's fantastic 👍 thanks so much for the info!
Not this? th-cam.com/video/hXTvyASWUu8/w-d-xo.html
Interesting, I didn't realize you could update and drive at the same time
Yeah had a very techie friend figure it out and I’m now upgraded. Love the change so much easier to use on the go.
Great video, thank you!
I will note that the thumbrdrive will work if it is formatted as FAT32. I did not test exFAT. Thank you!
It worked perfectly on my 2021 Legacy Touring XT. A good improvement. Thanks for the tutorial!
@@Veeetz There should be no charge if your car is under warranty. Out of warranty? I'd say that you'll receive a charge.
Yet another HUGE THANK YOU from yet another grateful OB lover+owner :)
I can confirm as well the dealer can do it. Just got back from there for an oil change and asked them to update the firmware.
Thanks for the work putting this together. Worked exactly as you showed and was done in about 15 minutes on my 2022 XT Touring.
The dongle makes android auto wireless AND fullscreen???
Thanks for the video! Worked great on my 2021 Outback Touring XT. Got individual buttons for heated and ventilated seats since it has both.
Worked perfectly! Thank you! (2020 Outback Limited)
Thanks for posting... I too was able to complete the download on our 2020. It take 65 minutes. :o)
Awesome. Thank you so much for the info provided. This worked on my 2020 legacy limited.
My dealer did mine under warranty; HVAC controls are a nice improvement. But wish it included wireless CarPlay, like the 2023 has. 8 month old car, 40+k I think this would be a nice feature to offer us.
Wireless carplay is a hardware feature and can't be done with a software update. But yeah they should have included this since 2020
Worked perfectly! Thanks for this update and all the instructions.
You Rock! Update worked like a charm first time. Thanks
Great to hear!
I have a 2020 Outback. To get to dealership mode on mine I had to press and hold the driver’s side temperature controls and hit the tune button 6 times. It wouldn’t work using the passenger side controls. Otherwise no hiccups and the update seems to be working just fine.
Worked perfectly on my 2020 Limited XT. Thanks for the clear instructions!
Thx again.
Thank you! This was easy to do and worked perfectly on my 2022 OB!
Worked so perfect !!! thanks for the sharing of knowledge
Thanks, upgrading my 2022 took about an hour but no issues.
Just installed yesterday, took 30 min, not much added but looks good, not sure thou is the latest update, drove new outback few weeks back and it was more on screen....just saying...thanks for the video and links
Thank you for making this video 🙏
I can confirm that the engine does not need to be on. I had none in the ON position, i stayed in the vehicle and did not open the door.
Dealer mode can also be done with the driver side temp buttons and the volume knob.
Things can go bad if there is a power interruption. From the technical service bulletin: "Once the update begins, the screen below will be displayed with a progress bar. It takes about 15 to 20 minutes for the update to complete.
VERY IMPORTANT: NEVER turn off the ignition while the software update is in process." 4a) Perform the update in a well ventilated location if updating with the engine running OR with the ignition ON and a battery charger connected."
thanks for the info...worked great once i got files on flashdrive..had to use windows instead of mac
For Mac users the USB needs to formatted in specifically "Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)." The car did not recognize the other options.
Nick is correct! please make sure you format your USB in a MAC using "Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)" otherwise it will fail to install around 75%
Work great on my Legacy GT 2020 thank's
Thanks! Another successful update. Cheers!
Worked great? Love it. Thanks for sharing..
I bought a dongle that gives me both full screen and wireless android auto on my 2020 outback XT.
Thank you so much. Are we supposed to take the flash drive out before we start the car again after the update?
This was so easily explained and worked flawlessly. You are awesome! #notallheroeswearcapes
Thank you. Also, phone holder brand? I love that I mounts close to USB so no cable mess.
Did exactly what you said to do and updated my wife's 2022 OB with nav. The map is still small? Should I redownload the High version again and try again? or take it to the dealer? Thanks for the video it is great.
Just followed this video and the installation was flawless. Many thanks to @Wildobxt for the great update instruction set!
Wow I just did this today but didn’t realize it was possible weeks ago. Only realized due to Alex from Subaru
I don’t recommend it, as the updates MAY affect AC and EyeSight controls while the update is running.
decent instructions. not bad at all.
