    This is our 2022 Outback Onyx XT. The guys at Cherry Garage were great! Two big thumbs up.
    The big takeaway for me is that I had previously blamed hiring them to do the work on me being lazy. Watching the video I happily realized I'm not lazy; I'm simply not capable of doing the work! LOL. (Or maybe it would just take me 100 hours instead of the 5 hours it took them.) Unless you're an actual mechanic, just hire these guys.
    As far as the mods:
    -The speakers are a big improvement. However, it's clear that the factory amp is pushing some frequencies okay and others seemingly not at all. I will definitely be adding the amp when it comes back in stock. (Why Subaru doesn't offer the Harman Kardon upgrade on the Onyx and Wilderness trims is baffling! #rude)
    -Before this install, I replaced the factory Yokohama Avid GT tires with Falken Wildpeak AT Trail. Do that before anything else! The stock Yokos (NOT Avid Ascend GT, btw) are horrifying. They don't just look whimpy, they are whimpy! When they came off the car, I was shocked. I'm coming out of a Mk VII VW GTI. So in that world, a lighter tire is usually better. That is NOT the case here. The Avid GT is downright flimsy. The sidewalls are so flaccid that they compress when you stack the tires. In a word: Ewww. The Wildpeaks are not only tougher, better looking, and better off-road, in rain, and in snow, they are better ON ROAD! No perceptible increase in road noise, and a much firmer and more accurate feel. Win-win. These are the tires Subaru should have put on this car from the get-go.
    -The CVT Anti-wobble Insert makes a noticeable imrovement in throttle response from a start. I used to be able to feel the lag as the system tightened up. Again, kind of flaccid. Ewww. Not anymore. The torque is right there like it should be. Like Subaru should have made it.
    -The Steering Dampener Lockdown also makes a noticeable improvement. The play in the steering center "dead spot" is largely removed. But there is not cost in terms of feedback harshness, etc. Lane wandering is decreased and driver confidence is increased. Again, this is something Subaru should do from the get go. (Noticing a theme here?)
    -The Front Strut Brace is not really noticeable at this point. However, the tires are still in the break-in period so I haven't pushed the car much in turns. My guess is that I'll see a slight improvement that may or may not be magnified when I have the new rear sway bar and links installed.

      Oh they offer the Harmon Kardon as an upgrade, but its not worth the $2600. That's what my dealership was going to charge me. I paid alot of money for my Onyx they could have definitely had that as standard equipment, the stock speaker sound is atrocious.

    • @johnseiler2656
      @johnseiler2656 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@Only9mm I just added this update to my original comment: "The speakers have had a chance to break in and I found and turned off another weird Subura setting (Vocal Image Control?) I hadn't noticed previously. The results are transformative! The system sounds really nice now. The bass is actually pretty surprising. (I specifically chose these speakers in part because of their super high efficiency rating: 94db. It was the right choice.) And honestly, these really are reference speakers. I'm hearing details in music I've never heard from any of my auto speakers. In fact, I'm now considering installing the amp because hearing what these speakers are capable of with the factory head unit, I'm guessing they'd blow me away with some decent power. I can unhesitatingly recommend them.
      For the front door and dash, I used Infinity Reference REF-9630cx. For the back doors I used the Infinity Reference REF-6532ex."
      Give them a shot. Good luck!

    Just to give you an update, I bought the OBW 2022 but before I signed the paperwork I told the salesman that I wanted to see the undercarriage, his reply was what ???
    I want to check out the undercarriage front to rear. I told him that I was a heavy equipment operator when I was in the Army.
    They raised it and I told him that the cheap plastic skid plates are not going to cut it.
    I then noticed the anti - wobble was mounted, he was rather surprised, I told him I know what I am looking for.

    Highly recommend the transmission mount insert. Super easy to install, on your own. I placed one on my old crosstrek, after I lifted it 1.5 inches. It eliminated the wabble, from the CV joints having a different angle. It did add a rumble inside the cabin, but not bad. If you're lifting your subie, get that insert.

  • @1966stumpjumper
    @1966stumpjumper 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    My experience with the anti wobble was for a 2” lift. It reduces and wobble but transfers a lot more vibration noise into the cabin. I ended up taking it out and lived with the minor trans wobble at 15-20 mph for a few seconds.

    Really love the design of the Nameless strut brace. Seems the simplest to install. Why no rear anti-sway bar? That seems to be the biggest opportunity with new Outbacks.

    You can put giant speakers in the rear, but without an amp and lc2, the subaru stereo isn't gonna push it. The stereo itself destroys the sound to protect the toy oem speakers.

    the H.K. system in my 2017 Outback 3.6r Limited is kinda lame. One of the speakers now seems to be blown. To those that have the H.K. upgrade be aware that there is no aftermarket wiring harness for both the dash speaker and center speaker locations. Neither use the same wiring harness as the non H.K. systems. Also, the front door speaker location is for low/mid bass only and plays no vocals/highs, unless you install an aftermarket system. Dash location is a coax and will also not fit a 3.5" coax, for which the non H.K. systems will/should fit. Recommend putting in a 6.5" into the front door instead of a 6x9 as there are more options out there for that size of speaker.
    no need to change the rear door speakers as unless you add an aftermarket amp/system, they will do ZERO to sound level/quality. ie: you are just wasting your money. put that money towards some sound deadening and sound proofing in the doors.
    19mm rear sway bar is a decent, inexpensive upgrade. 20mm upgrade would be overkill. Get the Subaru 19mm rear sway. PN# 20451FG021 + bushings.

      That’s sad about the hk system I got the base model wrx for tons of reasons, the speakers weren’t one of them. I added an amp and 2 10’s the same day I got it. I have bass maxed out and haven’t blown one and I listen to unmastered music I produce on it. As a speaker enthusiast especially bass. All I can say is all the options of speakers are trash and you are better off replacing them all with quality ones. I don’t consider Rockford or Harmon speakers from a dealership as good speakers. They’re mass produced cheaper product and are just a selling point without the actual quality those brands actually have. That said, the main issue comes from the head unit. It’s absolute trash and is the biggest upgrade I’m pushing for. After I replace the head unit with an actual useful one then I’ll go in and slam 2 15’s in the back with a better amp. As for now it sounds 5/10 the bass bringing it up from 3 out of 10.

    • @TheCherryGarage
      @TheCherryGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unsure of the speakers, I imagine the Harmon kardon being pretty nice. Maybe an amp would help some, we know the radio outputs some weird compression on the audio.
      The CVT stabilizer makes a difference in the power from engine to wheels more sturdy, but doesn't change the suspension or road driving quality. And the strut tower brace helps with handling and body rigidity but also would not effect normal driving at all.
      The sway bars would be one thing that would affect the normal driving if you were to get thicker ones, they help alot with hard turns to keep the wheels on ground and body level, but make the ride more rough over potholes and bumps.

      It is an added brace, strengthening the upper end of the frame on the front of the vehicle. The struts (main component connecting the wheels to the body) transfer the energy from the suspension, and can cause the body to flex. With the added rigidity of the strut bar, the strut towers flex less, giving better response to driving and turning, essentially making your entire car stiffer and more agile.

    The speaker installation was good, but the steering column lock section was inadequate as useful instructions. Couldn't tell how/ what they were actually doing. On the transmission mount, the only thing they actually showed how to do was greasing and inserting the rubber part into the transmission mount. All and all, after the speaker installation, the video is pretty useless as a how-to video.

    These mods are not needed 😂 Unless you take it to the track, none of this stuff will help on the road aside from the speakers

    Where did you buy the speakers wire adapter? And would those speakers fit in a 2023 Subaru Outback onyx?
