The reason I still listen to Jack White's music is because he just creates what he likes and what feels good, instead of trying to make something he thinks people want from him. I hate buying new albums and being bored because they sound just like what I expected it to. Boarding House Reach is amazing. Can't wait hear it live in Austin.
Right on. That’s why I love queens of the Stone Age too. They always challenge us to open up. I even often will question how much I like a new qotsa album, then not long goes by and I’m in complete love with it.
I see your point, but even Jack admits there's no perspective when you are the sole creative input and your musicians are all "guns for hire." What he did on the last Raconteurs album with Brendan Benson and the other guys, that sounds WAY more like a healthy collaboration. He admits that's better for perspective and making art. And even collaboration gets stale or runs dry, for example the 2015 Dead Weather album doesn't capture the groovy swampy vibe of the first two albums. Dodge has bright points, but Horehound and Cowards are two of my most listened albums in the past ten years, by far.
Metallica does that as well, albeit for better or for worse, but either way, it's more authentic and it keeps them from being pigeonholed in a specific subgenre.
Lars is a great interviewer. I actually love that he relates it to Metallica; it seems to coax better answers from his guests because it turns it into an insider interview rather than a superficial conversation.
It's like when Jonesy's Jukebox interviews Ozzy, and the experience of the two gentlemen is so similar there's a whole different level of humor and honesty, trust and communication. It's not cat and mouse, it's more like a fun jam. I seriously recommend that one to appreciate British culture.
I love hearing about Jack's creative process and how he sets up the environment with no preconceived notions about what should happen. I wish he'd go minimalist with it again; a lot of my favorites are the things he's done with very few people and instruments involved.
Incredible..talk..that's what defines the weird an endless number of sounds..and Infinite way of creating..from the simplest to generate infinite magic in what you play..welcome jack..you have the essence in your veins 💎
Great interview. Jack seems so down to earth. I ran into Lars late night at Taco Bell in SF about 15 years ago, had a nice conversation. He’s a cool dude.
I truly enjoy these interviews. They are so relaxed, and knowledgable. Just discovering these. It feels like listening in on a normal conversation. I love the calmness that Lars brings to these artists.
can we just acknowledge the fact that this man works in literally every genre. Boarding House Reach has something for literally everybody but its quintessential jack white
Went to one of the shows on this tour in Hammersmith London. Absolutely insane. Great performer but very different from what I remember from the old jack white, i.e. white stripes.
A really interesting interview, Lars is the man for this sort of thing with his experience - and it feels like the people he is interviewing respect him
jerad Liberty4560 Obviously. White Blood Cells is probably equal. Maybe the same for Elephant. But in terms of sheer songwriting ability and musical prowess, this is his best work yet.
Haut Strange I guess it's all just subjective I find this album to be extremely boring Icehouse zebra sounds like Fresh Prince of Bel-Air with all the studio production in this one it feels like half the power of the old four track zero production stuff he used to do either way it's just opinions I guess it's like food you can't definitively say one thing is better than the other we all have different tastes
I knew Over and Over had a rap style to it. I like where Jack is going. Best out there. The most admirable and knowledgeable. He finally used ProTools? I bet he knows all about Metallica and is like...”yeah....”--pretty cool.👍 Lars has his own show that’s awesome!
Jack White replying to Lars' comment about James Hetfield forgetting what he played 12 seconds previously unless it's on tape..."Mm, yeah, I've got a pedal that records 80 hours of music on it, so..." This is the exact point when Lars found out time had passed him by.
Since he has always enjoyed talking in public a lot (to put it neutral;-), I think Lars Ulrich found his later appointement here: being the grey-beared Rock-uncle interviewing others on the radio. good show. better than anything he did or said in public since 20 years or so.
That’s what you do on a podcast , you throw stuff off of each other . Musicians talking about how they work their craft , how relationships work in bands , how they write .
LOL Lars reminiscing about Hetfield forgetting his own lyrics :D I remember the infamous vid where he forgot the words to Seek and Destroy lolololol That was a wild night...
The only acceptable time to have a toothpick in your mouth is if you are wholly engaged in the task of using it to remove something from your teeth. In any other instance, even if the person is alone (but particularly if he or she is with company), it is merely an affectation; a complete and utter "douchebag accessory." What's particularly bizarre is that he is hosting a contemporary, world-renowned musician in Jack White, and he knows the interview is being filmed. He had the choice of either projecting a professional appearance to his guest or to receive him as we see in this clip: dressed like he's an extra in one of the yard scenes in Clint Eastwood's Escape from Alcatraz (1979).
Ah I found it kind of innocent the way Lars said wow in response to jacks eighty hour pedal. He may be in one of the biggest bands of all time but he’s also a bit behind the times too seemingly.
I think he's just trying to relate more to his guests, which in turn gets them to talk more in detail about their own stuff... I consider him to be a pretty good interviewer, better than a lot of other interviewers I've listened to...
Lars "I can relate to what Jack is saying, and i also have a lot of insight into the music industry. And comparing the questions to his own life/band brings out new dynamics to the question and interview" Ulrich
aavlijaner I don’t care for Metallica, but everything he says about it he relates to what they are talking about. I would think that the reason to have him as host, beyond the hosts being poster names, are their insights in the industry
He's literally rehearsing his band the way Bob Dylan has been doing it for 30+ years or longer. This isn't that crazy, except it's with hip hop musicians and Carla Azar combined
Lars Ulrich interviewing Jack White?! How does this not have at least a million views?!
bad thumbnail.
Two Rock and Roll Legends
Maybe because it's brand f'n new, people...
Right
apple music's original content is horribly marketed
The reason I still listen to Jack White's music is because he just creates what he likes and what feels good, instead of trying to make something he thinks people want from him. I hate buying new albums and being bored because they sound just like what I expected it to. Boarding House Reach is amazing. Can't wait hear it live in Austin.
just saw him live in Boston, he was fantastic! Played some stuff from new album, Raconteurs, Dead Weather, White Stripes, Lazaretto and Blunderbuss
Right on. That’s why I love queens of the Stone Age too. They always challenge us to open up. I even often will question how much I like a new qotsa album, then not long goes by and I’m in complete love with it.

Exactly. All the idiots who accuse him of being egotistical don't get that musicians usually relate and identify with each other on that level.
@@j_freed Interesting. Thanks for the recommendation!
Well said. Thanks.
It has to have been said but
Lars is a great listener which
makes him a refreshing interviewer.
He knows how to bring back a loop.
Jack White continuing to make rock history. So pumped to see him next weekend!!!!
please, please, please, continue this program. I would never thought in a million years that Lars is such a good interviewer.
Completely addicted to Jack's new stuff. Over and Over and Over is so damn catchy. It's like Beck and Rage Against the Machine had a baby. So good!!
It's seriously like RATM? I'll have to check it out.
HinjuRock Yeah, some serious Tom Morello influence in there, and even vocally you can hear some Zack-like tones in Jack's voice. It's an amazing track
I swear it sounds like it could be a SOAD song, ya or nah?
That's a pretty good analogy. Love that riff.
Ohhh such a fantastic description of the album. Love it - gonna borrow that to help out people lacking Jack White in their life. Thanks.
I love hearing about Jack's creative process and how he sets up the environment with no preconceived notions about what should happen. I wish he'd go minimalist with it again; a lot of my favorites are the things he's done with very few people and instruments involved.
I love this. Do one with Mustaine, Lars.
Agun Wiriadisasra that would be awesome
hahaha
DickHunter hunter it might end in tears though 😂
No warning? No second chance?
Tom Lanfear *smacks own head*
I FUCKED UP!
Lars is brilliant at this. Great interviewer.
This is the Lars I love...
Great interview.
Incredible..talk..that's what defines the weird an endless number of sounds..and Infinite way of creating..from the simplest to generate infinite magic in what you play..welcome jack..you have the essence in your veins 💎
Two great people.
Great interview. Jack seems so down to earth. I ran into Lars late night at Taco Bell in SF about 15 years ago, had a nice conversation. He’s a cool dude.
lars would be awesome if you can bring some member of radiohead
feroui hamza Like this shit so they can take a fucking hint
that ain´t happening my friend.
Woooooow so much more respect for Lars and Jack after hearing that they listen to Kendrick & Chris Rock! Small world!
I truly enjoy these interviews. They are so relaxed, and knowledgable. Just discovering these. It feels like listening in on a normal conversation. I love the calmness that Lars brings to these artists.
Couple rock legends!
I love all both do! Great interview. I enjoy hearing about Jack White’s creative process.
These interviews just sounds like two guys talking shop, and they are absolutely amazing
Thanks for this interview! great!
These Interviews are really really good. Empathic interviewer with charm and interesting questions. Great atmosphere!
It’s the dude I’m named after AND the dude that made me wanna play music. Neat.
can we just acknowledge the fact that this man works in literally every genre. Boarding House Reach has something for literally everybody but its quintessential jack white
lars is really good at interviewing.
lars is really good interviewer dude right on
Love the exercise, renting an apt in N’vlle. Just greatness.
only a musician can interview another musician because they know which amazing questions to ask
Next.. Trent Reznor!!
I've never seen anyone with eyes like Jack's. Even on video it's like he's looking right thru you.
Lars is extremely great at this! Danish dynamite!
Stuff like this should be on MTV inbetween the showing of music videos.
I think Lars really has some strong advice for band members about taking care of each other’s calendars ,and therefore, personal lives.
His music on stage is pretty good from what I've seen...spot on
I think Jack White and Jack Black should do an record.
And call it Ebony and Ivory
They've been on a single album together where Jack W. did one song and Jack B. did another track, don't know if that counts but, whatever
thank you for this
Interview Eddie Vedder!!!!
I was so thinking the same thing lol
Jack always listens intently
It's funny, as a songwriter I always tell my band that the song is finished and it's gunna be awesome but really it's just a cool riff and that's it.
zephyra My band is called Hotel Royal. Check it out on TH-cam. We got some videos.
Went to one of the shows on this tour in Hammersmith London.
Absolutely insane. Great performer but very different from what I remember from the old jack white, i.e. white stripes.
Staggering musical achievement with B.H.R
A really interesting interview, Lars is the man for this sort of thing with his experience - and it feels like the people he is interviewing respect him
Boarding House Reach is Jack White’s masterpiece.
Haut Strange omg hardly!!
Ever heard elephant or whit blood cells??
jerad Liberty4560 Okay explain.
jerad Liberty4560 Obviously.
Great interview.
I knew Over and Over had a rap style to it. I like where Jack is going. Best out there. The most admirable and knowledgeable. He finally used ProTools? I bet he knows all about Metallica and is like...”yeah....”--pretty cool.👍 Lars has his own show that’s awesome!
Brandon Young Ice Station Zebra was probably the most hip hop inspired on the record
Sounds like a RATM song.
to be honest, i always thought jack was just rapping in his own nasal style, like when i first heard icky thump.
OMG, Jack is so hot!
❤
Limitation is the magic ingredient for creativity...more limits to materials, time and resources allows something new to come through...
Jack's friend: hears one of the greatest riffs of all time Yeah it's okay
I was thinking about albums varying in sound vs. having a cohesive mood literally right before they talked about it
Jack White replying to Lars' comment about James Hetfield forgetting what he played 12 seconds previously unless it's on tape..."Mm, yeah, I've got a pedal that records 80 hours of music on it, so..." This is the exact point when Lars found out time had passed him by.
I'm sure James and Lars are aware of that technology.
Why is this video in parts, unlike the others, and where is the podcast? I really enjoy these interviews by lars
Since he has always enjoyed talking in public a lot (to put it neutral;-), I think Lars Ulrich found his later appointement here: being the grey-beared Rock-uncle interviewing others on the radio. good show. better than anything he did or said in public since 20 years or so.
when did lars ulrich turn into john lithgo?
I L💗Ve 🐇OU
I would love to hear Lars with King Diamond
That’s what you do on a podcast , you throw stuff off of each other . Musicians talking about how they work their craft , how relationships work in bands , how they write .
coool
Interesting intelligent 🤓 interview
LOL Lars reminiscing about Hetfield forgetting his own lyrics :D I remember the infamous vid where he forgot the words to Seek and Destroy lolololol That was a wild night...
Please do the impossible, Lars. Mc Ryde or/and Zack Hill from Death Grips. (They are online.)
Lars is so humble. It's very impression the way he can give others his due. The Noel Gallagher was a much better interview.
Glenn Danzig's long-lost son
Yeah
Which pedal can record 80 hours of audio?
5:01
Jack White is Rob Corddry’s alter ego
plays 7 nation army.
"aah its ok"
Ohhhh Jer-e-my Coooor-byn!
The members of Metallica used to light eachother on fire during song credit conversations.
🤘🏻👌🏻✌🏻️👐🏼❤️⚡️
Anyone know what pedal he's talking about? with the 80 hours?
Boz Sloan i really want to know this too
yeah, me too
It's TC ELECTRONIC Wiretap
A Boss RC-3 looper has a lot of memory and can record on a footpress. Dunno about 80 hours but mine has at least 20...
Tc wiretap
No hay alguien que pueda subtitular lo?
Learn english
That toothpick bothers me.
deal with it
Say hello to the bad guy
The only acceptable time to have a toothpick in your mouth is if you are wholly engaged in the task of using it to remove something from your teeth. In any other instance, even if the person is alone (but particularly if he or she is with company), it is merely an affectation; a complete and utter "douchebag accessory." James Ash .. yeah but he's an artist. So there's that lol
I think it bothers alot of people watching this. that's what i like about it.
Can Lars interview Trey from Phish?
Cool stuff I can't remember his name but interview the drummer from Metallica that would be awesome
Why the fuck are these interviews censored? It's the internet, not prime time network TV.
Ah I found it kind of innocent the way Lars said wow in response to jacks eighty hour pedal. He may be in one of the biggest bands of all time but he’s also a bit behind the times too seemingly.
I used to despise Lars Ulrich, but he's a great podcast host/interviewer.....
I think Evan Peters should play Jack White if they do a biopic.
Noel Gallagher and I are big Elastica fans.
Jack White looks like his parents could've been Sigourney Weaver and Jason Sudeakus.
Clayton V you nailed it!
Drew Wood 🤣
MARK TREMONTI would be incredible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bring Brian May!!!
Isn't the full interview an hour?
Kali Durga this is part 1
Kali Durga See how it says “Part 1”?
Does that mean it is all in 1 part? Excuse my bad English.
jonas brave no it’s split into multiple parts :)
Is this an interview or 'Lars talks about metallica' ?
I think he's just trying to relate more to his guests, which in turn gets them to talk more in detail about their own stuff... I consider him to be a pretty good interviewer, better than a lot of other interviewers I've listened to...
fucking lars haha, so surreal.
Do people still chew on toothpicks? I guess Lars does.
Grima Wormtongue in Thumbnail
Interview Elmer Fudd
You know what’s sad but true? I can be bought by the hot dog man!🎃!🤑
Lars “I’m in Metallica” Ulrich
Lars "I can relate to what Jack is saying, and i also have a lot of insight into the music industry. And comparing the questions to his own life/band brings out new dynamics to the question and interview" Ulrich
White kinda looks like Johnny Depp
History does rpt
..Ladys n' Gents Frank Zappa..for the new polution.
Omg Lars is bed houst it is an interview with Jack and his new album not about Lars and Metallica
aavlijaner I don’t care for Metallica, but everything he says about it he relates to what they are talking about. I would think that the reason to have him as host, beyond the hosts being poster names, are their insights in the industry
If he was just there to ask questions, they could just use Siri...
Jack please stay true.... to the point of not changing your teeth!!!!
He's literally rehearsing his band the way Bob Dylan has been doing it for 30+ years or longer. This isn't that crazy, except it's with hip hop musicians and Carla Azar combined
lol shut the fuck up and let him do his thing
Bob Dylan is one of his biggest influence. Makes sense. Also, it's important to acknowledge that very few musicians do it like Jack or Bob.
I woukd love to see a jazz album with lars on drums and maybe flea on bass. Something like that.
Great show, Lars. Please lose the toothpick. Thank you, signed, your viewers.
Why aren't they having a beer instead of cofee?
Because they like coffee?
It's probably early in the day.
So the match Lars is chewing on is some one of a kind, rich people match made out of whalebone and firefly semen, right?
i think ulrich would look better if he shaved his head
get mike patton or billy gould from faith no more on this show..
