I think a lot of people forget that Lars is a massive music fan.
I think that's why he is good interviewer as he is genuinely interested in the artist and what they have to say.

That is a great take on the cell policy. I initially thought he simply didn't want people recording the shows and posting them online. He actually wants the cell phones put away so the crowd isn't distracted and more focused so he can feed of their energy. I can respect that. As a fan in the crowd I hate when you are standing in general admission and there is a sea of people in front of you with their hands held up holding their I-Phone taking crappy shaky video that they will probably never look at again.

I never got the point of recording live shows with an inferior device like a mobile phone. The video looks like it has been recorded from miles away (E.G try to make a fancy picture of the moon with ur phone, it doesn't even come close to represent the thing u see) and the audio sounds like a tasmanian devil plugged in to a distortion pedal.
All the above would be a non argument were it not that at most big gigs there are about a dozen professional camera operators and a heap of audio techs doing a very good job at recording the whole thingy.
I'd rather experience/feel the vibe and actually enjoy the show instead of seeing it through my fuckall inch sized mobile phone screen.

Jeroen Leeuwerke exactly, and why pay so much for a ticket to watch a it live through a tiny screen? Bloody annoying if you’re stuck behind someone doing it.

I feel the same way. Why go to a concert that your so excited to go to and who you're seeing then all of a sudden you whip your stupid phone out. How in the he'll can you enjoy the concert when you most likely are having to spend all your time and energy the wrong way by concentrating on trying to get the best video. Hey why not just go their, keep the dam phone away and actually have a great time watching the band that you paid to see. I'm so done with everyone no matter what happens or goes on just takes their phone to take a video of whatever is happening even in serious situations. I'll just never get it. I don't care about my phone at all. The only reason I have one is bc I have a daughter so I need one for school calls, doctor's, ect. But other than that I might just come on you tube here and their to watch some video's or listen to some music and that's really it. And if you actually read this whole thing thank you for listening to my rant. 😉 Hope y'all have a great day...xoxo

I see it as a respect thing. Can you imagine everyone in the audience at a show in the 80's with those 2 foot long camcorders? No it would be effing ridiculous.

Lars' presumptive questions usually seem to get a "Yes" response. He's been there and done that so he's good at putting himself in his guest's position. Musicians' shoptalk. He's good at this.

As a photographer, having shot jack a few times on stage, I think all concerts should have the ‘3 song rule’ for fans like they do for us in the press pits. The first three songs you can take pictures after that. It’s a no go! You will be asked to leave. I think people do want a few shots on their phones to remember the night but for both the artist and the fans it can get in the way with really experiencing the show. Ideally no phones and enjoy the show! But at the bigger venues that would seem like nice compromise. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • @corbananderson7060

If you go to a live concert, being there watching a performer perform live is part of the engagement. He has every right to say respect this process and the fact that he's performing live and limit anything that distracts from this. I have nothing against taking a picture or a short live video to commemorate the moment but watch the performer and not your phone during the show. I wish more concerts and performers would do this.

EXCELLENT INTERVIEW ! People actually relating to one another! And as a vocalist myself, I can completely agree! As an artist and their audience this is so important. You do truly bounce back and forth off of each other, keeping that energy going. It is like the late great MJ used to say, it was near to a spiritual experience up their on stage, with all of his band, himself and the fans relating to one another in such a manner. VERY, Very smart idea on many levels ! I'm a very outgoing person , so I do personally try to make it a challenge to always get more eye contact, and conversation with the ppl around me in my day by day routine. Try to get them more engaged. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, but imho. If we don't work on this collectively, (with all the new tech hitting us left and right), eventually we will ALL suffer as a society. Our community will be dumbed down to emotionless walking around zombies, paying zero attention to our real world going on around us! And we do already miss so very many Phenomenal things as it is, these days!!. Great Interviewer and Great Guest!! Love it!

I went to a Jack White show during that tour. The phone ban was the best thing ever!
1: The crowd was way more into it
2: The band was way more into it
3: I wasn't distracted by dozens of screens in front of my face
It was the best concert experience I've had in possibly the last 8-10 years for that reason alone.

Jack is one of the last of real musicians that will obtain legendary status.🙌✌🎸

For the Doggies Guitars nonsense...Jack is amazing, but there are lots of other real musicians out there right now, you’re just not paying attention.

@@MikaelLewisify of course they are but they are not going to obtain legendary status. I think the OP makes a really sound point.

I haven’t seen any musicians in the past several years that could possibly obtain legendary status (and I have been paying very close attention).

LOL Lars is the greatest host. This has real potential. I hope, after he goes through the rock n roll shortlist, which is really short these days, he goes through them again and we second and third interviews.

I absolutely loved not having the phones. I usually keep it put away during shows except for maybe a couple of (crappy) pictures at the beginning. And I absolutely hate the way everyone holds them up and essentially watch the show on a tiny screen. So other than not knowing what time it was, I loved it.

I didn’t know Lars Ulrich had a radio show, cool. Also it’s cool to see Jack White as a pretty cool, well-spoken guy

First time I saw Green Day, Billy Joe mentioned during the show "if you're looking at me through a screen, you're not really seeing me"... Made me think about how rock stars who were around before smart phones must hate it how crowds pull out their phones and aren't engaged. Made me stop pulling mine out and just enjoy the show 👍

Interesting hearing him talk about wanting to feel the extremes of every emotion, I'm exactly the same and I've never heard anyone else say the same.
