An executioner attacks A Cainhurst hunter, who is hunting Eileen. Eileen is hunting a yharnam Hunter. Then the executioner would then be a Hunter of hunters of hunters of hunters.
Amygdala is unique. And hanging out literally everywhere. And she is one and whole. This is kinda her thing i belive. She is like christian trinity, but without limit :) If we dive deeper, that thing we see can be even some part of her. Not even a whole organism.

And honestly many people like myself are only playing due to the challenge. After completing the game I will watch lore video like this to fill in the massive gaps I didn't really care to fill while playing.

Something you didn't mention in the video was the fact that once you arrive at the castle, if you look back to your carriage, the trusty steeds that brought you there, and the pathway you took, the carriage is busted/frozen over, the horses are long dead and complete popsicles, and the pathway seems like it was destroyed years ago during the invasion or another conflict. Could you please explain this?
chrisR97 The altar that reverses time is probably related to it. Maybe when ever someone is summoned to the castle, the time is reversed for the carriage and the bridge, until they've served their purpose. Or maybe the Cainhurst Castle is somewhere between a dream and the waking world. I dunno, but it's easy to come up with possible reasons.
Arexion5293 I think it's mentioned that Martyr Logarius and his Executioners invaded Cainhurst "long ago". Frankly, everything of import has happened "long ago", except for the killing of important bosses and, say, the turning of Amelia and pretty much anyone else in Yharnam. Even the downfall of the Church has been going on for "a long time". How does this explain the horses? It doesn't. It also doesn't explain why the main doors open for you in Cainhurst. I'd like to think that the Queen still retains some influence over matters related to Cainhurst. And, who knows, perhaps the invitation itself has an inkling of power in it.
That's a good possibility. I Always assumed that there was some sort of disjointed time flow occurring in this game, or the dream vs reality concept, but I never really knew how those would fit in.
Something that might help is that the horses and even the carriage that pick you up at hemwick are actually ghosts, how a carriage can be a ghost, I’m unsure, but the Horses are. if you attack them when they show up to pick you up, they will simply disappear into thin air, and will stay gone until you reload the area.
So that's where all the vampires went! They were the Vilebloods. Hmmm...With their hatred for the Healing Church, and the fact that most of the "Cleric Beasts" take on a more Wolf-like quality, the relationship between Cainhurst & the Healing Church pretty much boils down to the age old war between Werewolves & Vampires. Plus, while patroling the streets of Yharnam, the fact that you often come across those ornate coffins, all wrapped up in chains as if to keep something inside, would explain why the Queen is the only true Vileblood left.
i think that alfred killed himself because he realized that annalise is truly immortal and that logarius' death was in vain, and now that logarius is gone there is nothing to keep the Vilebloods contained. you'll notice that the crown of illusions is on the statue in front of alfreds corpse only after he kills himself, i think he was staring at it in the realization that his entire quest to free logarius is the worst thing he could do to stop the vilebloods, and he couldn't handle that his whole life (or a big part of it) has been a fruitless quest. kind of like Brolaire doubting his quest to find the sun? maybe there are some parallels there.
cloudbloom he killed himself because for some reason (like lagarious) they believed in being a martyr. Which is sacrificing yourself to a cause. He knew that the queen was unkillable but didn’t care. He settled for destroying her body to the point that she would be nothing but living twitching organs left in a chair. And because Alfred didn’t expect our character to revive her corpse he believed his mission was done and killed himself to complete his desire to be a martyr.
Do one for Ebrietas. I feel like not enough people know of the true tragic story behind her. She was essentially abandoned by her Kin, lost in her own tomb, then captured by the church for experimentation and even had a child (Rom) perhaps Rom was a gift to Ebrietas for sharing blood with the church and granting knowledge. Shortly after, she loses Rom, maybe to ascension or something. Whether Rom was literally her child, or someone she knew is uncertain, but its safe to assume that Ebrietas did care for her, as evidence by her mourning over Rom's dead petrified body as we encounter her. The doctors later on became mindless brain suckers, craving knowledge. So Ebrietas was of no use anymore. Now she just sits in her altar of despair, mourning over her child's body, thinking of her family, realizing how alone she really is, until we come along being the heartless demons we are in souls games and start attacking her. Fights only in defense, then dies.

So, apparently Alfred was supposed to be somewhat like Solaire. A "good natured" fellow out on a quest. "Praise the good blood". And Alfred's voice actor is the same as Solaire's. But I find Alfred to be an ominous character and I don't feel that warmth for him that I feel towards Solaire. I don't mind that he ends up a bloody heap.

Both Solaire and Alfred are devoted to religion, but while Solaire is simply a good doer and believes in arthurian codes of honor, Alfred follows a sect that worships blood. Healing with blood, but still blood nonetheless. It's already pretty macabre right there. After all, where does the "good blood" come from? EDIT: Anyway, my point is, Alfred is too crazy and too mental to ever be trusted, even if he never directly harms you. Solaire was naive, but not insane. He was an innocent knight, not a murderer. No matter the comparisons, Alfred and Solaire are far from being similar
The only disappointing part of the whole revive Queen Annalise quest is she doesn't say anything about it. No thanks, no confusion, no comment for somehow coming back from being a pile of pink pulp. Great video, as always, VV!
@@Aelesis no, it is because she can't remember any reviving things that happened. For her, she didn't die. She is not dead and will never be from her POV. So even if you revive her a million times, she will not remember any of it. It's a "back-in-time" process.
Idk if it's a translation error, but playing the game in italian she just told me "you are insane" once revived. Maybe it had to do with me killing alfred right away in the trone room
Pity Annalise is prevented from playing a better political game. She has all the makings of a really magnificent villain. But alas, she is shut in by Logarius, and is never seen saying anything to anyone save you. Headcanon commencing: The hunter does not walk in on a bloodstained Alfred, having "killed" the queen and gloating. However, we see the queen taunting him about his poor master, alone in the cold for years on end. How he had suffered. How Alfred had failed to find him and lay him to rest. On and on until Alfred snaps and smashes her to bits (which of course we see in all its glory). Then Alfred sees you, gives a truncated victory speech and is off on his way. Then as we turn around to leave, we hear a whispered "wait..." While the camera could not see Annalise's body, an item appeared there. The Queenly Flesh. This is the point where the hunter makes the choice to aid Annalise, the vampire-esque Queen of the Vilebloods, or Alfred, the militant Executioner. And then it plays out as in the video.
I don't know why, but I draw a parallel between the Executioner invasion of Cainhurst, and the siege of Sen's Fortress by the Knights of Berenike. Both Cainhurst and Sen's are sealed off, not allowing just anybody to wander in, and at the top of both castles, there lies a guardian protecting something hidden from the rest of the land below. As far as we know, both invasions weren't entirely successful, as Alfred seems to be the only executioner left, and there are only a handful of unhollowed Berenike Knights left in Lordran. It's interesting to note how similar the two events seem to be.
***** Yes, but the original intent was to destroy the Vilebloods, not leave one left standing. And the argument could be made that Tarkus was also successful in getting to Anor Londo, but for the most part, the Berenike Knights were fought off. And it's clear not all the Executioners weren't unscathed. You can find a dead one in Cainhurst, and if there are others alive, where did they go? If they love martyrdom so much, why aren't there more Executioners in Yharnam trying to free their Master Logarius? Perhaps it's from a gameplay standpoint that Alfred is the only one we find, but still, the two events seem similar, at least to me.
Bishop Havel What was hidden in sen's fortress? Just because it's guarded doesn't mean it is hidden. The Berenike raided the castle TO FIND anor londo. Therefore meaning they knew it was there
K What I mean is that Sen's isn't just guarded, but actually getting inside isn't possible if you're just a random traveler (i.e Seigmeyer). Special requirements need to be met before getting inside. Granted, I don't know how the Berenikes actually got in, nor do we know how all of the Executioners got to Cainhurst. I guess you're right in regards to Anor Londo though, I was thinking that the means of actually getting there was hidden, and not the goal itself.
Ok, so tell me if I'm overthinking this, but is it possible that the one who brought the forbidden blood to Cainhurst was the Impostor Iosefka? Firstly, From her garb, she was obviously a member of the Choir, which has its ties to Willem and Bergenwerth. Secondly, If killed before the bloodmoon, she drops an Oedon Writhe rune, whose lore states "Both Oedon, and his inadvertent worshippers, surreptitiously seek the precious blood." Could this be a reference to blood Dregs? Thirdly, When fighting her, Iosefka uses Numbing mist, which is a closely guarded Cainhurst recipe, and she herself seems immune to its affects as she will heal even if it is used on her. Finally, you find the Cainhurst summons on the table next to the door she stands by through most of the game, but it was not there when we first awoke, so it is most likely that she is the one who brought it there. Tell me, does this theory hold water?
That's a solid theory. The only thing that's confusing is how the letter was addressed to us and now iosefka. Everything else makes perfect sense and fits in without any problem.
@@survive1997 Is there a way to get the Cainhurst Letter without first interacting with the imposter at the door? Because she could have learned about you from those interactions. I just always interact with her before sneaking inside so I can get her information to correctly send the old man to the Cathedral Ward, and also send the beast-man there on NG+ playthroughs.
There probably is some sort of "magic" in these invitations, as the one you give to Alfred was, most likely, addressed to him, even though there is no way to confirm (due to it being sealed), and he is a loyal member of the church (so there isn't any reason for someone from cainhurst to invite him there)
i think the thing is with Bloodborne, compared to the other games in the souls series, it doesn't have the same depth to it. sure you can dig up the story like in the souls games but there's just not as much there
+shimmyking4 but there is still some amazing prepare to cry material in characters like ludwig, gehrman and maria. Sure, vaati has gone through the entire history of bloodborne and i dont think there is much material left on that front, some amazing characters still wait their individual prepare to cry videos.
I think that's the point, he's more like a twisted reflection of solaire, something just slightly off until his zealotry and brutality are finally revealed

Android 19 The plague makes people turn into werewolves, the people of Yharnam(Yharnamites?) technically count as vampires already. Vilebloods are basically that on steroids. They are the Alucard/Pillar Men to the Yharnamite's ghouls/vampires.

I haven't played anything besides Bloodborne so far but I got hooked on it. Your videos are absolutely fantastic and the quality of them is outstanding. Thank you. I think Laurence was the one who took the "forbidden blood" to Cainhurst. Before the rise of the Healing Church and the building of Yharnam, I think Byrgenwyrth received the patronage of the Cainhurst monarchy, which was typical of scientific/scholarly institutions in Bloodborne's sort of era. I think the Byrgenwyrth scholars were obligated to share their findings with their patron, the Cainhurst queen and her court, but Willem thought the world was not ready to learn of the elder blood and wanted to hide the secrets of tombs. But, in opposition to this, Laurence believed it their duty to report back to the Cainhurst court, so he set out to share their discovery with them and leaving his colleague, promised not to forget their adage. He would continue to fear the old blood, but, unfortunately, his patron would not be so cautious.
I think the person who brought the forbidden blood to Cainhurst Castle was Runesmith Caryll. He must of been caught by the witches of Hemwick after returning from Cainhurst at the waypoint where you depart for the castle. Maybe Caryll thought that Willem and Laurence were not his equals and the Runes and language itself was the key to heighten mankind. After all Nobles are always presumed to be everyone's betters skilled in tongue and bettered by their own lineage. After all we are all bound by blood so giving the nobles of Cainhurst blood of the Gods would best help mankind since they are thought to be the best. It might of explained why the Church declared Cainhurst enemies and rivals. Just a thought anyone got any ideas?.
+AstralMuffin105 Looking deeper at the pics (Both Cainhurst summons, look at the seals) more can be drawn on. Annalise became the benefactor, the traitor clearly Runesmith Caryll was paid and owed allegiance to Annalise who used the forbidden blood to secure her position as queen. She threw out and degraded the other nobles (look at the blood of Arianna and Adella and Alfred) all nobles of Cainhurst begin with the letter A. When Caryll saw his mistake he tried to correct it using runes to communicate with the great ones but failed, retreating from Castle Cainhurst he was mobbed by the townsfolk (witch-hunt) and killed. Lawrence saw the new Queen and her creatures and thus founded the Church using another blood, hence Healing church to undo what Caryll did. They say necessity is the mother of invention. Willem never knew what became of Caryll hence "Master Willem would of been proud" The executioners are kind of like old knights of medieval Europe, men who want Martyrdom men who want to die for God. This must of happened long before the Healing Church became powerful which makes me wonder how much time has passed since the Vilebloods and the coming of the Healing Church. The seals on the summons tell alot, one is new sealed in red with a duel lion crest from Queen Annalise the older one is tattered like a 100 year old letter faded and sealed in blue with an unknown crest with no name on it.

Watching this after a lot of playthroughs, I think that if there's a Bloodborne II, there are two narrative possibilities: Taking place in the Pthumerian society, or during the war between Cainhurst and the Church. It would be awesome if, like in Sekiro, in certain part of the game you should take the decision of fighting alongside Cainhurst or The Church...
I hope they make a Blood Borne 2 I feel like the writers have so much more to explore and while I love the souls series I felt that Blood Borne's setting was very unique and explored elements that haven't really been explored in games
they will, i mean, they pretty much connected flawlessly sulyvahn's beasts to the great ones and the old wolf to the curse of the bests, they just need to make bloodborne 2 and give us actual proof and then they'd have an inter-connected multiverse. and anyway there are pretty convincing rumors around about it being announced at E3.

Assuming that Annalise is the inspired by Erzsébet Bathory, I always saw in the ghosts in the castle more young girls killed by the Queen for their blood than noble women.
This is just proving that Hidetaka Miyazaki is genius, alongside with his From Software team. Never have I in a game had to collect little pieces of lore, and then like place it in right order like a puzzle so you can understand it. One of my favorite videos of yours is that about Pinwheel in Dark Souls, proves how good researcher you are . Every other game just throws its lore at you at begging of game, or it's usually really easy to find out whats going on. I can't but not to think about Series as work of art.

Will we see a video for Valtr? He contrasts Alfred beautifully, Alfred appears to be a man of goodness and dutiful faith. You find that, though he does not deceive you, there is more than meets the eye...a fanaticism and fervour that makes him merciless. Whereas, I believe, his counterpart Valtr is, like Alfred, devoted to the point of appearing fanatical. But you find his sign before Ludwig and offers Confederates to your aid. He delivers guidance and an unyielding loyalty. Both Alfred and Valtr are passionate men bound by duty, but Valtr never lost himself in his faith, nor the hunt itself. But Alfred's desire to be canonized like his mentor leads him to act at the limits of his mores. I think just as Alfred is a meaningful character, so too is his counterpart. A man who consumed a beast as the ultimate act of hate, an extension of his loyalty to his fellow compatriot. Is Valtr just an eccentric?
There's not necessarily a third man who betrayed the school. It's possible that it's Laurence himself, especially since we know he had to meet Gherman and Maria and get the cord that allowed communion with the moon presence somewhere (before bloodborne was patched the description of the cord that you find in the shop said that it came from Cainhurst, which would explain why Analise and her followers are so adamant on giving her a child of blood, because she already did it once. And why she refuses to be proposed to by you saying that she doesn't want to hurt you. Most likely what killed her first husband the king of Cainhurst in the first place. Also that Analise recognized the ring and what it's for means that she knows about the pthumeru and if she is their descendant than that explains why she's immortal and why Laurence would want to visit her in the first place. And don't forget. This woman recognized the scent of the moon on you. She knows.
I must say, Vaati! These videos are some of the best produced videos i have ever seen on youtube! The way you capture the feeling of the game, with your storytelling, the music in the background, and the incredible camera angles! everything is perfect! And i really hope you continue to make Bloodborne videos even after Dark Souls 3 comes out! (at least now, with the DLC coming up, and all) The Lore videos and every single video you have produced, just have this amazing feeling and atmosphere, that truly capture the feeling of the game! hey, I know these Bloodborne videos are kinda old now and you've mostly been doing Dark Souls 3 stuff nowadays, but would you ever consider doing a lore video on Micolash? I know there's less information on him than other characters, but he's such a strange cryptic character and I'd love to fully understand what his deal was.
Dovahcat Best I can figure he is the host of the nightmare, and Mergo is using his dream to grow, thus keeping his mind alive even though his body is long dead. When you kill him there is no host save maybe Mergo herself/himself. Kill the wet nurse, and Mergo has no hold on the nightmare and cannot grow anymore.
what about the brain of mensis? and aren't both the hunter's nightmare and hunter's dream places with hosts too? what about nightmare frontier? is it directly connected to the nightmare of mensis or is the host there either patches or amygdala? i actually would like to know more about how nightmares function rather than about micolash himself, we might know the details about him, but overall we know who he was and what he did for... mostly, what reasons, but we know nothing about the nightmares, absolutely nothing.

One thing is unanswered; what exactly is the 'forbidden' blood? If the Healing Church is founded on the use of the Old Blood, then what marks the forbidden blood as special? Is it the blood of Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen in particular?
VaatiVidya im going through my 2nd playthrough on bloodborne and just wanted to say that I enjoy the storytelling on these BB videos. They provide a lot of insight and turns out I missed out so many things on my 1st playthrough. Keep up the goodwork!
I very much disagree with this interpretation of Logarius for a number of reasons. The first being Alfred's dialogue: "In his time, Master Logarius led his executioners into Cainhurst Castle to cleanse it of the Vilebloods. _But all did not go well_ and Master Logarius became a blessed anchor, guarding us from evil...Tragic, tragic times...that Master Logarius should be abandoned in the accursed domain of the Vilebloods. I must free him, so that he may be properly honored in martyrdom." This bit of dialogue is important for a number reasons, 1) Alfred doesn't actually _say_ what went wrong, only that something did indeed occur that resulted in the failure of the executioners' raid against cainhurst castle, and 2) it may have been _one single event_ that effectively turned the tide of the battle; some unexpected occurance that led to defeat of the executioners. Also, bear in mind that Alfred is searching "for the path to cainhurst castle". If Alfred was a part of the raid, wouldn't he already know the path there? It's clear that he was not there, and very likely that what he gathered was hearsay, so his interpretation of events is not entirely reliable. It's also apparent that the "all did not go well" wasn't the residents of cainhurst transforming: many of the executioners' gear, from garb to their famous (or infamous) arcane gauntlets, are stored away within chests, which implies that cainhurst was still doing relatively well if they can store their foes' gear as symbols of triumph. Another piece of info is Logarius's own characterization: his famous quote "Acts of goodness are not always wise. and acts of evil are not always foolish, but regardless, we shall always strive to be good." This is an extremely important quote towards understanding Logarius. This does not strike me as words of conviction, but rather as whispers of doubt. By the healing church's standards, killing the vilebloods would be seen as an act of great good, and the vilebloods using their strain of old blood is an act of great evil, _yet_ if Logarius is stating his own rather morality of good not always being wise and evil not always being foolish, what could this say about his views about the vilebloods and the executioners? Does he think vilebloods are monsters and executioners as heroes, or does he believe that their respective actions are a little more ambiguous then they originally appear? Are the executioners right to impose reckless violence, or is there something that their perceived view of "good" cannot currently comprehend? Finally, there's the crown of illusions: "One of the precious secrets of Cainhurst. The old king's crown is said to reveal illusions, and expose a mirage that hides a secret. And so Logarius donned the crown of his own volition, determined to prevent a single soul from stumbling upon the vile secret. What visions did he see, sitting serenely upon his new throne?" Something to note is that this crown is designed to reveal illusions, illusions that could threaten cainhurst if discovered. That means that Logarius himself _could not have created the illusion of the queen's throne room, as said illusion was always there_. The idea of him "sealing the queen away" doesn't make sense in this context, as her being hidden inside her throne room was essentially the status quo. Another part is the final line of Logarius "_sitting serenely upon his new throne_". Serenely...a very strange adjective to describe a man whom is supposedly suffering. He is not anxious, or worried, or determined, but _serene_...as if all went exactly according to plan. Note his appearance as well: he does not look like a beast from Yharnam. In fact, he looks very familiar...almost like certain ghostly darkbeast nobles we find within cainhurst's walls... Also, here is one final question, one that puts Logarius's role under scrutiny: Why is he sitting on an elaborate throne? Not a simple chair..._but a throne_...
I know this is a 3 year old comment, but I only got to play Bloodborne for the first time recently, and this seems like the only comment that's in line with my initial reaction. Going in blind, I sincerely thought that Logarius was protecting Queen Annalise from the outside, not the other way around. Obviously it's not really touched on outside of implications - Queen Annalise doesn't so much as mention anything outside of her disdain towards the church, and doesn't seem to have an opinion on Logarius personally, whether good or bad. But it really did seem like Logarius, for all intents and purposes, was the "King" of Cainhurst. Did he fall unrequited love for Annalise, or become "corrupted" in some way? I guess we'll never truly know.

And honestly many people like myself are only playing due to the challenge. After completing the game I will watch lore video like this to fill in the massive gaps I didn't really care to fill while playing.

Something you didn't mention in the video was the fact that once you arrive at the castle, if you look back to your carriage, the trusty steeds that brought you there, and the pathway you took, the carriage is busted/frozen over, the horses are long dead and complete popsicles, and the pathway seems like it was destroyed years ago during the invasion or another conflict. Could you please explain this?
chrisR97 The altar that reverses time is probably related to it. Maybe when ever someone is summoned to the castle, the time is reversed for the carriage and the bridge, until they've served their purpose. Or maybe the Cainhurst Castle is somewhere between a dream and the waking world.
I dunno, but it's easy to come up with possible reasons.
Arexion5293 I think it's mentioned that Martyr Logarius and his Executioners invaded Cainhurst "long ago". Frankly, everything of import has happened "long ago", except for the killing of important bosses and, say, the turning of Amelia and pretty much anyone else in Yharnam. Even the downfall of the Church has been going on for "a long time".
How does this explain the horses? It doesn't. It also doesn't explain why the main doors open for you in Cainhurst. I'd like to think that the Queen still retains some influence over matters related to Cainhurst. And, who knows, perhaps the invitation itself has an inkling of power in it.
That's a good possibility. I Always assumed that there was some sort of disjointed time flow occurring in this game, or the dream vs reality concept, but I never really knew how those would fit in.
The castle is completely haunted, that's why.
Something that might help is that the horses and even the carriage that pick you up at hemwick are actually ghosts, how a carriage can be a ghost, I’m unsure, but the Horses are. if you attack them when they show up to pick you up, they will simply disappear into thin air, and will stay gone until you reload the area.

So that's where all the vampires went! They were the Vilebloods. Hmmm...With their hatred for the Healing Church, and the fact that most of the "Cleric Beasts" take on a more Wolf-like quality, the relationship between Cainhurst & the Healing Church pretty much boils down to the age old war between Werewolves & Vampires. Plus, while patroling the streets of Yharnam, the fact that you often come across those ornate coffins, all wrapped up in chains as if to keep something inside, would explain why the Queen is the only true Vileblood left.
i think that alfred killed himself because he realized that annalise is truly immortal and that logarius' death was in vain, and now that logarius is gone there is nothing to keep the Vilebloods contained. you'll notice that the crown of illusions is on the statue in front of alfreds corpse only after he kills himself, i think he was staring at it in the realization that his entire quest to free logarius is the worst thing he could do to stop the vilebloods, and he couldn't handle that his whole life (or a big part of it) has been a fruitless quest. kind of like Brolaire doubting his quest to find the sun? maybe there are some parallels there.
cloudbloom he killed himself because for some reason (like lagarious) they believed in being a martyr. Which is sacrificing yourself to a cause. He knew that the queen was unkillable but didn’t care. He settled for destroying her body to the point that she would be nothing but living twitching organs left in a chair. And because Alfred didn’t expect our character to revive her corpse he believed his mission was done and killed himself to complete his desire to be a martyr.
He kills himself because NPC's in soulsborne games generally kill themselves when they fulfil their purpose.

Do one for Ebrietas. I feel like not enough people know of the true tragic story behind her. She was essentially abandoned by her Kin, lost in her own tomb, then captured by the church for experimentation and even had a child (Rom) perhaps Rom was a gift to Ebrietas for sharing blood with the church and granting knowledge. Shortly after, she loses Rom, maybe to ascension or something. Whether Rom was literally her child, or someone she knew is uncertain, but its safe to assume that Ebrietas did care for her, as evidence by her mourning over Rom's dead petrified body as we encounter her. The doctors later on became mindless brain suckers, craving knowledge. So Ebrietas was of no use anymore. Now she just sits in her altar of despair, mourning over her child's body, thinking of her family, realizing how alone she really is, until we come along being the heartless demons we are in souls games and start attacking her. Fights only in defense, then dies.

So, apparently Alfred was supposed to be somewhat like Solaire. A "good natured" fellow out on a quest. "Praise the good blood". And Alfred's voice actor is the same as Solaire's. But I find Alfred to be an ominous character and I don't feel that warmth for him that I feel towards Solaire. I don't mind that he ends up a bloody heap.

+HeavenhoundVII Well, this universe is inspired by Lovecraft's work. Every religion in those stories are pretty macabre and bordering the insane. Both Solaire and Alfred are devoted to religion, but while Solaire is simply a good doer and believes in arthurian codes of honor, Alfred follows a sect that worships blood. Healing with blood, but still blood nonetheless. It's already pretty macabre right there. After all, where does the "good blood" come from?
EDIT: Anyway, my point is, Alfred is too crazy and too mental to ever be trusted, even if he never directly harms you. Solaire was naive, but not insane. He was an innocent knight, not a murderer. No matter the comparisons, Alfred and Solaire are far from being similar
The only disappointing part of the whole revive Queen Annalise quest is she doesn't say anything about it. No thanks, no confusion, no comment for somehow coming back from being a pile of pink pulp.

@@Aelesis no, it is because she can't remember any reviving things that happened. For her, she didn't die. She is not dead and will never be from her POV. So even if you revive her a million times, she will not remember any of it. It's a "back-in-time" process.
Idk if it's a translation error, but playing the game in italian she just told me "you are insane" once revived. Maybe it had to do with me killing alfred right away in the trone room

Pity Annalise is prevented from playing a better political game. She has all the makings of a really magnificent villain. But alas, she is shut in by Logarius, and is never seen saying anything to anyone save you. Headcanon commencing: The hunter does not walk in on a bloodstained Alfred, having "killed" the queen and gloating. However, we see the queen taunting him about his poor master, alone in the cold for years on end. How he had suffered. How Alfred had failed to find him and lay him to rest. On and on until Alfred snaps and smashes her to bits (which of course we see in all its glory). Then Alfred sees you, gives a truncated victory speech and is off on his way. Then as we turn around to leave, we hear a whispered "wait..." While the camera could not see Annalise's body, an item appeared there. The Queenly Flesh. This is the point where the hunter makes the choice to aid Annalise, the vampire-esque Queen of the Vilebloods, or Alfred, the militant Executioner. And then it plays out as in the video.

I don't know why, but I draw a parallel between the Executioner invasion of Cainhurst, and the siege of Sen's Fortress by the Knights of Berenike. Both Cainhurst and Sen's are sealed off, not allowing just anybody to wander in, and at the top of both castles, there lies a guardian protecting something hidden from the rest of the land below. As far as we know, both invasions weren't entirely successful, as Alfred seems to be the only executioner left, and there are only a handful of unhollowed Berenike Knights left in Lordran. It's interesting to note how similar the two events seem to be.
***** Yes, but the original intent was to destroy the Vilebloods, not leave one left standing. And the argument could be made that Tarkus was also successful in getting to Anor Londo, but for the most part, the Berenike Knights were fought off. And it's clear not all the Executioners weren't unscathed. You can find a dead one in Cainhurst, and if there are others alive, where did they go? If they love martyrdom so much, why aren't there more Executioners in Yharnam trying to free their Master Logarius? Perhaps it's from a gameplay standpoint that Alfred is the only one we find, but still, the two events seem similar, at least to me.
Bishop Havel What was hidden in sen's fortress? Just because it's guarded doesn't mean it is hidden. The Berenike raided the castle TO FIND anor londo. Therefore meaning they knew it was there
K What I mean is that Sen's isn't just guarded, but actually getting inside isn't possible if you're just a random traveler (i.e Seigmeyer). Special requirements need to be met before getting inside. Granted, I don't know how the Berenikes actually got in, nor do we know how all of the Executioners got to Cainhurst. I guess you're right in regards to Anor Londo though, I was thinking that the means of actually getting there was hidden, and not the goal itself.

Ok, so tell me if I'm overthinking this, but is it possible that the one who brought the forbidden blood to Cainhurst was the Impostor Iosefka?
Firstly, From her garb, she was obviously a member of the Choir, which has its ties to Willem and Bergenwerth.
Secondly, If killed before the bloodmoon, she drops an Oedon Writhe rune, whose lore states "Both Oedon, and his inadvertent worshippers, surreptitiously seek the precious blood." Could this be a reference to blood Dregs?
Thirdly, When fighting her, Iosefka uses Numbing mist, which is a closely guarded Cainhurst recipe, and she herself seems immune to its affects as she will heal even if it is used on her.
Finally, you find the Cainhurst summons on the table next to the door she stands by through most of the game, but it was not there when we first awoke, so it is most likely that she is the one who brought it there.
Tell me, does this theory hold water?
That's a solid theory. The only thing that's confusing is how the letter was addressed to us and now iosefka. Everything else makes perfect sense and fits in without any problem.

I just always interact with her before sneaking inside so I can get her information to correctly send the old man to the Cathedral Ward, and also send the beast-man there on NG+ playthroughs.

There probably is some sort of "magic" in these invitations, as the one you give to Alfred was, most likely, addressed to him, even though there is no way to confirm (due to it being sealed), and he is a loyal member of the church (so there isn't any reason for someone from cainhurst to invite him there)

I think Laurence was the one who took the "forbidden blood" to Cainhurst. Before the rise of the Healing Church and the building of Yharnam, I think Byrgenwyrth received the patronage of the Cainhurst monarchy, which was typical of scientific/scholarly institutions in Bloodborne's sort of era.
I think the Byrgenwyrth scholars were obligated to share their findings with their patron, the Cainhurst queen and her court, but Willem thought the world was not ready to learn of the elder blood and wanted to hide the secrets of tombs. But, in opposition to this, Laurence believed it their duty to report back to the Cainhurst court, so he set out to share their discovery with them and leaving his colleague, promised not to forget their adage. He would continue to fear the old blood, but, unfortunately, his patron would not be so cautious.
Alfred's monologue when he kills Annalise is honestly the worst chills I've ever felt in a fromsoft game. It was extremely unsettling and I loved it.

I think the person who brought the forbidden blood to Cainhurst Castle was Runesmith Caryll. He must of been caught by the witches of Hemwick after returning from Cainhurst at the waypoint where you depart for the castle.
Maybe Caryll thought that Willem and Laurence were not his equals and the Runes and language itself was the key to heighten mankind. After all Nobles are always presumed to be everyone's betters skilled in tongue and bettered by their own lineage.
After all we are all bound by blood so giving the nobles of Cainhurst blood of the Gods would best help mankind since they are thought to be the best. It might of explained why the Church declared Cainhurst enemies and rivals.

Annalise became the benefactor, the traitor clearly Runesmith Caryll was paid and owed allegiance to Annalise who used the forbidden blood to secure her position as queen. She threw out and degraded the other nobles (look at the blood of Arianna and Adella and Alfred) all nobles of Cainhurst begin with the letter A.
When Caryll saw his mistake he tried to correct it using runes to communicate with the great ones but failed, retreating from Castle Cainhurst he was mobbed by the townsfolk (witch-hunt) and killed.
Lawrence saw the new Queen and her creatures and thus founded the Church using another blood, hence Healing church to undo what Caryll did. They say necessity is the mother of invention.
Willem never knew what became of Caryll hence "Master Willem would of been proud"
The executioners are kind of like old knights of medieval Europe, men who want Martyrdom men who want to die for God.
This must of happened long before the Healing Church became powerful which makes me wonder how much time has passed since the Vilebloods and the coming of the Healing Church.
The seals on the summons tell alot, one is new sealed in red with a duel lion crest from Queen Annalise the older one is tattered like a 100 year old letter faded and sealed in blue with an unknown crest with no name on it.
I think I watch these vids every summer. Idk why but I always do a play through it Souls and Bloodborne during summer. Something to get me through summer waiting for new releases in the fall. Love the channel my dude

Watching this after a lot of playthroughs, I think that if there's a Bloodborne II, there are two narrative possibilities: Taking place in the Pthumerian society, or during the war between Cainhurst and the Church. It would be awesome if, like in Sekiro, in certain part of the game you should take the decision of fighting alongside Cainhurst or The Church...
I hope they make a Blood Borne 2 I feel like the writers have so much more to explore and while I love the souls series I felt that Blood Borne's setting was very unique and explored elements that haven't really been explored in games
they will, i mean, they pretty much connected flawlessly sulyvahn's beasts to the great ones and the old wolf to the curse of the bests, they just need to make bloodborne 2 and give us actual proof and then they'd have an inter-connected multiverse.

Assuming that Annalise is the inspired by Erzsébet Bathory, I always saw in the ghosts in the castle more young girls killed by the Queen for their blood than noble women.
This is just proving that Hidetaka Miyazaki is genius, alongside with his From Software team. Never have I in a game had to collect little pieces of lore, and then like place it in right order like a puzzle so you can understand it. One of my favorite videos of yours is that about Pinwheel in Dark Souls, proves how good researcher you are . Every other game just throws its lore at you at begging of game, or it's usually really easy to find out whats going on. I can't but not to think about Series as work of art.

Will we see a video for Valtr? He contrasts Alfred beautifully, Alfred appears to be a man of goodness and dutiful faith. You find that, though he does not deceive you, there is more than meets the eye...a fanaticism and fervour that makes him merciless.
Whereas, I believe, his counterpart Valtr is, like Alfred, devoted to the point of appearing fanatical. But you find his sign before Ludwig and offers Confederates to your aid. He delivers guidance and an unyielding loyalty.
Both Alfred and Valtr are passionate men bound by duty, but Valtr never lost himself in his faith, nor the hunt itself. But Alfred's desire to be canonized like his mentor leads him to act at the limits of his mores.
I think just as Alfred is a meaningful character, so too is his counterpart. A man who consumed a beast as the ultimate act of hate, an extension of his loyalty to his fellow compatriot.

There's not necessarily a third man who betrayed the school. It's possible that it's Laurence himself, especially since we know he had to meet Gherman and Maria and get the cord that allowed communion with the moon presence somewhere (before bloodborne was patched the description of the cord that you find in the shop said that it came from Cainhurst, which would explain why Analise and her followers are so adamant on giving her a child of blood, because she already did it once. And why she refuses to be proposed to by you saying that she doesn't want to hurt you. Most likely what killed her first husband the king of Cainhurst in the first place. Also that Analise recognized the ring and what it's for means that she knows about the pthumeru and if she is their descendant than that explains why she's immortal and why Laurence would want to visit her in the first place. And don't forget. This woman recognized the scent of the moon on you. She knows.
to me, Alfred's entire story is just squidward pointing and laughing
I must say, Vaati! These videos are some of the best produced videos i have ever seen on youtube! The way you capture the feeling of the game, with your storytelling, the music in the background, and the incredible camera angles! everything is perfect! And i really hope you continue to make Bloodborne videos even after Dark Souls 3 comes out! (at least now, with the DLC coming up, and all) The Lore videos and every single video you have produced, just have this amazing feeling and atmosphere, that truly capture the feeling of the game! hey, I know these Bloodborne videos are kinda old now and you've mostly been doing Dark Souls 3 stuff nowadays, but would you ever consider doing a lore video on Micolash? I know there's less information on him than other characters, but he's such a strange cryptic character and I'd love to fully understand what his deal was.
Dovahcat Best I can figure he is the host of the nightmare, and Mergo is using his dream to grow, thus keeping his mind alive even though his body is long dead. When you kill him there is no host save maybe Mergo herself/himself. Kill the wet nurse, and Mergo has no hold on the nightmare and cannot grow anymore.
what about the brain of mensis? and aren't both the hunter's nightmare and hunter's dream places with hosts too? what about nightmare frontier? is it directly connected to the nightmare of mensis or is the host there either patches or amygdala?
i actually would like to know more about how nightmares function rather than about micolash himself, we might know the details about him, but overall we know who he was and what he did for... mostly, what reasons, but we know nothing about the nightmares, absolutely nothing.
They should make a proper lore storybook for these games

One thing is unanswered; what exactly is the 'forbidden' blood? If the Healing Church is founded on the use of the Old Blood, then what marks the forbidden blood as special? Is it the blood of Yharnam, Pthumerian Queen in particular?

I very much disagree with this interpretation of Logarius for a number of reasons. The first being Alfred's dialogue: "In his time, Master Logarius led his executioners into Cainhurst Castle to cleanse it of the Vilebloods. _But all did not go well_ and Master Logarius became a blessed anchor, guarding us from evil...Tragic, tragic times...that Master Logarius should be abandoned in the accursed domain of the Vilebloods. I must free him, so that he may be properly honored in martyrdom." This bit of dialogue is important for a number reasons, 1) Alfred doesn't actually _say_ what went wrong, only that something did indeed occur that resulted in the failure of the executioners' raid against cainhurst castle, and 2) it may have been _one single event_ that effectively turned the tide of the battle; some unexpected occurance that led to defeat of the executioners. Also, bear in mind that Alfred is searching "for the path to cainhurst castle". If Alfred was a part of the raid, wouldn't he already know the path there? It's clear that he was not there, and very likely that what he gathered was hearsay, so his interpretation of events is not entirely reliable. It's also apparent that the "all did not go well" wasn't the residents of cainhurst transforming: many of the executioners' gear, from garb to their famous (or infamous) arcane gauntlets, are stored away within chests, which implies that cainhurst was still doing relatively well if they can store their foes' gear as symbols of triumph.
Another piece of info is Logarius's own characterization: his famous quote "Acts of goodness are not always wise. and acts of evil are not always foolish, but regardless, we shall always strive to be good." This is an extremely important quote towards understanding Logarius. This does not strike me as words of conviction, but rather as whispers of doubt. By the healing church's standards, killing the vilebloods would be seen as an act of great good, and the vilebloods using their strain of old blood is an act of great evil, _yet_ if Logarius is stating his own rather morality of good not always being wise and evil not always being foolish, what could this say about his views about the vilebloods and the executioners? Does he think vilebloods are monsters and executioners as heroes, or does he believe that their respective actions are a little more ambiguous then they originally appear? Are the executioners right to impose reckless violence, or is there something that their perceived view of "good" cannot currently comprehend?
Finally, there's the crown of illusions: "One of the precious secrets of Cainhurst. The old king's crown is said to reveal illusions, and expose a mirage that hides a secret.
And so Logarius donned the crown of his own volition, determined to prevent a single soul from stumbling upon the vile secret.
What visions did he see, sitting serenely upon his new throne?"
Something to note is that this crown is designed to reveal illusions, illusions that could threaten cainhurst if discovered. That means that Logarius himself _could not have created the illusion of the queen's throne room, as said illusion was always there_. The idea of him "sealing the queen away" doesn't make sense in this context, as her being hidden inside her throne room was essentially the status quo. Another part is the final line of Logarius "_sitting serenely upon his new throne_". Serenely...a very strange adjective to describe a man whom is supposedly suffering. He is not anxious, or worried, or determined, but _serene_...as if all went exactly according to plan. Note his appearance as well: he does not look like a beast from Yharnam. In fact, he looks very familiar...almost like certain ghostly darkbeast nobles we find within cainhurst's walls...
Also, here is one final question, one that puts Logarius's role under scrutiny:
Why is he sitting on an elaborate throne? Not a simple chair..._but a throne_...
I know this is a 3 year old comment, but I only got to play Bloodborne for the first time recently, and this seems like the only comment that's in line with my initial reaction. Going in blind, I sincerely thought that Logarius was protecting Queen Annalise from the outside, not the other way around.
Obviously it's not really touched on outside of implications - Queen Annalise doesn't so much as mention anything outside of her disdain towards the church, and doesn't seem to have an opinion on Logarius personally, whether good or bad. But it really did seem like Logarius, for all intents and purposes, was the "King" of Cainhurst. Did he fall unrequited love for Annalise, or become "corrupted" in some way? I guess we'll never truly know.
