Not really, sure art allows freedom of interpretation , to say that an artist's own interpretation or intention means nothing is just wrong. An artist expresses himself through his work and wishes for his vision or feelings to reach as many people. How then his feelings are interpreted by those who view his work is largely upon them but still to say just coz he offered his work to others devoid him of his own is absolutely sad.
@Danny BRITZMAN If you ignore the author's wishes and perspective you are a worse dickhead than Patches. Seriously, art is subjective but to ignore the original intent when it's given to you is to play pretend and turns it all into pointless drivel, since nothing has value and every perspective is pointless as a form of interpretation.
@Danny BRITZMAN Imagine the art was supposed to be about peace but the peoples interpret it as war, ignoring the creator wishes. So yea, regardless of how we interpret it, the orginal creator wish must always be respected.
@David Assébof ? Why shouldn't you pay youtubers? Because their videos are the source of their income? So people with a source of income never needs more money.
And then Patches started worshiping dark cosmic monstrosities which transported him to a parallel world where people become beasts through blood and turned him into a spider.

>Does a video about a character who spends his life punishing the greedy >Hey guys beat me in Darksouls and get some merchandise! YEAH OK PATCHES I KNOW YOUR TRICKS.
I believe that Patches has true faith in gods, and not the gods such as gwyn. In the ringed city he says "He will stick us in his prayers". He hates clerics due to the simple hypocrisy of their religion and how they crave power and "treasure" which was the reason the clerics where seeking the rite of kindleing in the first place
@@khajiitimanus7432 That would make sense. Velka is the goddess of sin and therefore, punishes those who commit sin. One such sin easily being *greed,* which Patches detests.
The world of Dark Souls has a will. Perhaps that its whom he is loyal to. After all, the first true sins began when the "gods" rebelled against it's will Thus their greed is passed on to their followers. Most of the world follows the "gods" and their greed. So it really does make sense that he follows Velka or the world I also strongly believe Velka had a Dark Soul. She valued truth more than her own will. And those who follow the dark in the serious always speak of truth and peace. Even the fire keeper, after gaining eyes and accepting darkness, begins saying that she hopes you find peace Vs being guided by flame
Normally id disagree, as creators need to make their money..... But trying to do a Thoughty2 ad just isnt what can work with these types of videos... You dont just transition from talking about some piece of lore, to then be talking about an ad... End the video THEN do the ad, or do the ad at the beginning, nobody can pull off the transition as smoothly as Thoughty2 though lmao.
"Why seek the truth when greater men have tried and gone mad seeking it." VaatiVidya Yeah I know its late. But this is the end story of all characters of Dark Souls
Even those like the Crerstfallen warrior from DS1, who didn't want any grand quest or grand design. He just wanted to exist in peace, until the smelly serpent came along with it's annoying snorting and unbearable stench, of course.
always felt Lapp/Patches was the embodiment of the From Software team and Miyazaki during the Ringed City was them to help the player character one last time and a final goodbye to the people who had thoroughly enjoyed the journey of the soulsborne series.
It’s worth noting that Patches disappears for a bit after telling him Greirat went to Lothric. Patches STILL tries to save Greirat even after his debt is repaid, he truly cares for him and Greirat only dies because Lothric is such a deathtrap
I don't care what people say about The Ringed City. The Lapp questline and Gael boss fight are my favourite thnigs in the whole series, which I will remember fondly through all my life.
It seem's to be the highlight of the game from where I'm standing. I currently am just waiting for the shadows die twice thing to release so I can get Souls III on sale.
The graveyard really shows how much the devs care for Patches, they designed that area around his quest line, simply for you to be kicked down and it actually helping you..
I always liked the idea of patches being the furtive pygmy. Lapp made me like it even more. So patches found the dark soul, and with his kind personality he didnt want fame, he didnt want power. He was kind. So that made him furtive. He didnt stand out. He helped the gods win the war but they betrayed him. They betrayed his people. Then. His people betrayed him. He was alone. His selflessness got him naught but heartbreak. This is why he hates clerics. The spout the lies of the gods. They seek more power for the gods, themselves. Tell the tales of miracles filled with falsehoods. Charlatans. Then there are the humans. His descendants. Filled with greed. They fight and kill one another, all for the sake of power. It is better they be dead when they fail his test than live as fools who cant appreciate his brothers. Death to the lot of em. Then as the world ends, there is no one left to test, to punish. He then falls to the wretched curse beset upon him. The only way he could be the man he once was, is to forget. He is kind, caring. Only see the best in people. He meets you. And you help him. You are kind, and supportive. Then. He remembers. At the very end of the world, the first human and his last descendant. He states have a fine dark soul to you. The first holder of the dark soul gives his blessing to his last descendant. It just took the end of the world.
Or maybe patches its a shard of Manus, but the human shard that was lost in the Infinite dark of the abyss, maybe this was how Manus was when he was just a human and pygmin
Perhaps. And take this with a pinch of salt. The description of the Mimic head tells us that mimics are people from a far away, forgotten land, where the crime of greed is punished by the convicted being cursed and transformed into a mimic. So that they may seek repentance by punishing others for their greed. What if Patches, comes from this forgotten land and embraces it culture and standards against greed. It would explain his obvious distaste towards greed.
Sadly we may never know anything about Patches, seeing as this is the final game in the series, and Dark Souls 3 following its predecessors and leaving much to interpretations, with a plot that was never meant to be fully understood.
MrSayWhat fromsoft is rolling in the dough. Theyve used "patches" in almost all their games (even armored core) so maybe their next game will feature more of patches. Albeit not concluding or describing his souls story but...more patches \[T]/
@@Blackhawk211 Not to forget that Patches was nearing the Hollowing process, already with no memory of his past. By the time he recovers it, he discards the set for his usual Thief set, only keeping around the useful weapons to assist against the Spear of Filianore. (though I find it ironic how he ended up finding a Pursuer Greatshield of all things, making him a "hunter" so to speak)
@@MrDibara he’s using the curse ward shield because as Lapp he wanted to fight off the curse for as long as possible, but even so still succumbed to the curse.
I love how in the FromSoft Soulsborne universes, each different and the same in various degrees of sadness and death, there are, and always will be, two universal constants: - A greatsword, shining like resplendent moonlight, a weapon that’s wielded by only the strongest, most capable, most devout warriors. - A bald guy who will kick you off a cliff into monsters and poison and later say “It’s just a prank, bro.”
so, if Patches has lasted until the end of time... when did he originated from? maybe he is one of the first undead dating back to the age of dragons, that would be awesome.
Patches is a troll so dedicated to his craft that he avoided going mad over the course of likely thousands of years. It's hard not to respect him in some fashion.
I killed patches all the time. He def didn't make it to the end of the world haha but seriously, this video kinda prevents me from harming the guy. Super sad.
I have a theory, maybe even a ridiculous one, that all along, patches was in some way a in game portrayal of miyazaki himself. Patches, who was always with us, making us angry at times, but also helping us. Just like miyazaki of course, you might curse his name at times for the difficulty of the game. But in the end, it wouldn't be the same without the difficulty. Patches from demon souls, to the very end of the world of dark souls he was with us. Even in dark souls 2, the most different of the souls games, where miyazaki was not very prevalent in the making of the game, he was still in the game, as pate. As patches kicks us one (possibly) last time into the fray in the last dlc, so has miyazaki. I really hope any one stumbles upon this, to think maybe I'm on to something.
I was liking everything you were saying, except... Meh, I don't really put Pate on the same level of Patches. Pate just feels like a sleaze-ball, just like his rival Creighton. Meanwhile, Patches does drop hints here and there of there being more then he lets on besides his "evil trickery". I like to consider Pate a seperate character, and one I wouldn't hesitate to get killed. _(same with Creighton)_
Sorry for the wait D: There's actually another Prepare to Cry ready and waiting in the wings (currently available for patrons), but I had to delay it because my PtC artist disappeared off the face of the earth :( Luckily, this led to me finding UndeadChestnut, whose comic inspired this video. Fun thing I thought of just yesterday while watching a Mitch L video: Patches is from Carim. He's got the same pale skin and sharp features adorning the faces of both Lautrec and Oswald. And of all the places we hear about in lore, the one with the shadiest clerics always seems to be Carim. Where else might one gain such a deep-seated loathing of clerics but the land where they are regularly tied to ritual sacrifice in the crafting of bite rings and such?
+claudio cozzi *Il Mare Eterno Nella Mia Anima plays on the background* This is enemy territory, Lorian and Lothric are lurking nearby. Yet they can't contain their emotions. Patches calls out to Greirat, [player character name] sheds sorrowful tears. But no matter how much they call out to Greirat, no answer returns. Greirat is dead and his silence constantly reminds Patches and [player character name] of his fate. But even if his life's blood ends here, his soul lives on. - Greirat the Thief rests here
Shado White that was patches. Who he was before he was forced into being the heyna, the spider, the unbreakable. The undead curse is a curse indeed as it forced patches from being the selfless man he could have been into a man fighting for his own survival.
I think Patches represents the player better than anyone: obsessed with loot, doesn't take things too seriously and unable to resist the urge to push someone off a cliff when their back is turned.
Just tell lapp he's Solaire and his purpose is jolly coopetation and that if you stare at the sun you'll go blind so don't even think about it. You save his life and get Solaire back win win ;p
That was by far my favorite video you've I've ever seen Regarding Dark Soul's, I just gotta say that you have such an amazing ability to turn a Character from just another NPC into an amazing, Deep, Thoughtful and Memorable Character i truly appreciate your video's because without them Dark Souls just wouldn't be as good as it is.
Vati it is time you must stitch all the dark souls lore together into 1 video. Every single thing from common fruit to Gael, from dark souls 1 characters and interactions to the existence off the first flame after the new dlc takes you to the new world. All of it as a final dedication to the souls series. From each bonfire names to the rivalries between different now in the series. That's and goodbye.
This made me fall in love with Patches as a character because this confirms just how, ironically, humble Patches is: he never had "grand goal" in life, never wanted to light the flame or some such, he just lived. Sure, his life was hard, but it was a life worth living and he lived it the best he could - that is why he never went hollow, because, ironically enough, Patches might've been the most "human" character in the entire series.
Who would have thought that Patches, a character who lies, kills, and even becomes a spider, would be a very philosophical character. If you told me that a few years ago, I would have smacked you across the face 100 times and demanded that you stop making shit up.. Thanks Vaati for another great video.
This is an amazing video, the ending almost brought me to tears. With the souls game having ended, I hope you will still find content to make Vaati. I really enjoy your videos, you're one of the few channels I'm willing to subscribe to.
Listening to this video made me remember what I love about Soulsborne. This dark atmosphere that is littered with characters, yet every single one that speaks has a purpose and a personality. Patches is the least likely to have a compelling story, but I fucking love it.
but why does he steal siegwards armor? all siegward wants is to defeat yhorm to fullfill his promise to his old friend. seems selfless for me, yet patches still robs him and throws him down a well
Its selfish. All thing are selfish. Siegward do that for himself. For his honor , for his sanity , to honor his memory. He do that for feeling good , being in peace with himself. Is not bad , is quite noble in fact. But in the end its a selfish act even if you hide it to your self.
because this theory is nonsense. Patches brags about looting your corpse in DS1 he is completely a greedy thief with only one soft spot for a fellow theif.
Upon replaying it, He also brags about looting your corpse and selling what he finds in DS 3 when he locks you in the tower. Patches is motivated by greed, not punishing greed.
The way you do videos. The atmosphere, the voice. This video honestly caused patches to become one of my favorite npcs. I actually made a dnd npc inspired by him.
Patches is a good boy. I can never stay mad at him, he is a sweetie. And also probably the only npc that differentiates your characters gender in his dialogue.
He may pull some very stupid pranks and dislike clerics, but Patches remains one of my favorite NPCs in the SoulsBorne series. I also find it somewhat... cute that he "flirts" with female player characters.
Literally, out of all the characters, I never expected that Patches was telling the truth all of this time and it's somewhat poetic that he's your last friend, at the very end of the world.
I love Patches' Ringed city quest so much. Hes one of my favourite npc of the series and I just think the character development and finale that he got is beautiful.
For some reason, hearing a man who forgot who he was, whose greatest wish in life is to find himself, say "I swear upon my birthname that I AM your friend." moves me to tears every time I hear it. Just the thought of him swearing on the one thing he truly wants in life and he swears that he is your friend. No matter what he does afterwards, this moment rings true, pure and unsullied.

Aha I am surprised someone uh... Finally figured this one out!
@Danny BRITZMAN yep, and that's the beauty of it. Some fans tho don't understand and defends the game was meant to be interpreted in a certain way
Not really, sure art allows freedom of interpretation , to say that an artist's own interpretation or intention means nothing is just wrong.
An artist expresses himself through his work and wishes for his vision or feelings to reach as many people. How then his feelings are interpreted by those who view his work is largely upon them but still to say just coz he offered his work to others devoid him of his own is absolutely sad.
@Danny BRITZMAN
If you ignore the author's wishes and perspective you are a worse dickhead than Patches.

Patches is the Dark Souls of Dark Souls NPC, in that he punishes greedy moves.
this is part of my internal Canon now, thank you.
Dark Souls III: The Phantom Soul
Considering he made it through the shattering of the Elden Ring, Patches truly is Untetherable.
I imagine that Patches might love Velka as a god to pray to.
@@khajiitimanus7432 That would make sense. Velka is the goddess of sin and therefore, punishes those who commit sin. One such sin easily being *greed,* which Patches detests.
@@MrDibara Basically what my line of thought was. :p
Could be amygdala
The world of Dark Souls has a will.
Perhaps that its whom he is loyal to. After all, the first true sins began when the "gods" rebelled against it's will
Thus their greed is passed on to their followers. Most of the world follows the "gods" and their greed. So it really does make sense that he follows Velka or the world
I also strongly believe Velka had a Dark Soul. She valued truth more than her own will. And those who follow the dark in the serious always speak of truth and peace. Even the fire keeper, after gaining eyes and accepting darkness, begins saying that she hopes you find peace
Vs being guided by flame
Interesting to note. If you go back where you first meet "Lapp" after finishing his quest, you find a Seigbrau.
The ending was so good and emotional and then the ad kinda killed it.

always felt Lapp/Patches was the embodiment of the From Software team and Miyazaki during the Ringed City was them to help the player character one last time and a final goodbye to the people who had thoroughly enjoyed the journey of the soulsborne series.
It’s worth noting that Patches disappears for a bit after telling him Greirat went to Lothric. Patches STILL tries to save Greirat even after his debt is repaid, he truly cares for him and Greirat only dies because Lothric is such a deathtrap
That Miyazaki chat was hilarious

I'm pretty sure the furtive pygmy is manus father of the abyss from dark souls 1

@@MrDibara he’s using the curse ward shield because as Lapp he wanted to fight off the curse for as long as possible, but even so still succumbed to the curse.
I love how in the FromSoft Soulsborne universes, each different and the same in various degrees of sadness and death, there are, and always will be, two universal constants:
- A greatsword, shining like resplendent moonlight, a weapon that’s wielded by only the strongest, most capable, most devout warriors.
- A bald guy who will kick you off a cliff into monsters and poison and later say “It’s just a prank, bro.”
so, if Patches has lasted until the end of time... when did he originated from? maybe he is one of the first undead dating back to the age of dragons, that would be awesome.

Adam Gazda actually Miyazaki himself has stated he connects with patches character
That made me feel warm after all these years of being with this series.
That, that actually is a very good head cannon
And we are alone in Bloodborne, he's the only familiar face that we have
I was liking everything you were saying, except...
And now he's Patches the Untethered... maybe he even survived the end of the world?

Fun thing I thought of just yesterday while watching a Mitch L video:
Patches is from Carim.
Is he perhaps all afther loyd ?

Character i truly appreciate your video's because without them Dark Souls just wouldn't be as good as it is.
So you want him to patch all his videos together and release it as one video? This makes no sense. lol
ALL THE LORE!
Do it yourself you unsatisfied dweeb.
LA Gaming how's about you watch all of his dedicated works again in order to support his effort?
One video explaining literally everything would be like 30 hours long
This made me fall in love with Patches as a character because this confirms just how, ironically, humble Patches is: he never had "grand goal" in life, never wanted to light the flame or some such, he just lived.

Somehow this goddamn game I keep hearing about is linked to everything
but why does he steal siegwards armor? all siegward wants is to defeat yhorm to fullfill his promise to his old friend. seems selfless for me, yet patches still robs him and throws him down a well
Its selfish.
He kicked you down because you are greedy about the treasure, he sure hate cleric for good reason, greed
