Hey Warren. Love your videos. About the turbo. When those vanes get stuck you can soak the unison ring and all the vanes in oven cleaner (just make sure it has Sodium Hydroxide in it). That will completely remove the carbon build up. Did it on a turbo I built for my LBZ. Just don't get the oven cleaner on the aluminum. It'll eat it. BTW, LB7's were Borg Warner waste gated units and every generation after has VGT. LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML, and L5P. Have a good one. Keep up the good work. 👍🏻

Those rings are used to scrape carbon build up off of the piston. All the build up (trucks conforming to newer emissions standards, EGR, DEF, DPF etc.) Was causing liners to glaze in turn causing issues w/ massive blow by and oil consumption.

Looks like typical Pacific Northwest climate change weather to me, Warren. Lol It's the exact same weather I grew up with in the early 60s all the way till now. The winds through the gorge are something else too. Watching you with that flashlight in your mouth cracked me up, I still do that now and I have headlamp. Hahaha... Old habits are hard to break my friend. The pistons on that Paccar engine look pretty clean for 800,000 miles. I expected a whole lot of carbon buildup from the emissions system. Quite surprised actually. I guess the good news is that you won't be worrying about putting it back together until you get back from your vacation.
Warren, like your getter done attitude.. What ever it takes.. That come from being a navy guy, if your in the middle of the ocean you fix it or sink. Sink is not an option. have fun visiting you family.
Well I’ll tell you, the farmers in western Canada would love to see that snow for the crops. We had a pretty short winter and not much precipitation for planting season in the future. I have an old joke for you. What’s the difference between a farmer and a baby? A baby stops crying when you give him a bottle. Hahahahaha. You don’t need a headlamp, you need a floodlight under the truck, just like the old school. Started doing a clutch job on a Peterbilt today and broke out the old flood light, works great. Not LED but old-school incandescent, keeps you kind of warm in the winter if you know what I mean.
I know the cords on those old style fluorescent work lights were a pain, but the ones with the wire hangers were really handy and bulbs not too hard to change might be better than a head lamp.

Powdered metals work great to customize allloys for stuff like valve seats as long as the manufacturers have strict QC standards. Unfortunately I cannot think of one seat manufacturer that isn’t in China anymore.

Pretty cool to see the inside of the turbo!! What would happen if you just use the damaged wheel? It didn't look too bad. Maybe a little less boost is all?? You can fix anything!!! Have fun on vacation.
The turbine turns upwards of 20,000 rpm..any imbalance is greatly magnified, which causes bearing and seal failures, and, there could be cracks in the wheel itself caused by the impact- it could fail and ruin the housing... Hopefully a new turbine wheel is affordable enough to replace.
