We have a form of NHS here in Australia called MEDICARE. Don't know why America is so scared of it, healthcare for all and shouldn't bankrupt anyone, if you are you working you pay about a 1% levy on your gross wages to help the poor. If you are unemployed all of your healthcare is bulk billed and your prescriptions are heavily subsidised by the Government. When I'm out of a job and doing it tough I certainly don't ever mind paying tax in the past. What goes around comes around. Basic health care should be a right whether poor or rich.

But this basically means that almost the only people tested have been the ones admitted to hospital; so that stated mortality rate is roughly just the percentage of the people admitted to hospital already very ill who are are dying. Mortality rate as a percentage of 'confirmed cases' is meaningless unless you also factor in the testing regime. Virtually no-one in the UK who has had the virus will be a 'confirmed case' unless they are seriously ill with it. Every death is a tragedy, but actually our NHS is doing a fantastic job, coping with the number of patients and nothing like the scenes we have seen in other countries. No refrigerated trucks lined up over here. If I had to choose whether to live through this pandemic in the UK or in the US, there would be no contest.

I have never been treated in a US hospital and I'm guessing you have never been treated in a UK hospital, so neither of us is in a position to make a comparison. However, despite reports in both countries of potential shortages in equipment, PPE and with staff working long hours, I'm sure the level of care and the equipment available for patients who need it is much the same. I genuinely believe that the chances of survival for any given patient admitted to hospital with Covid 19 would be same regardless of whether they went into a US hospital or a UK hospital. And I personally applaud the staff, in BOTH nations.
