  • Build a wide nesting box for chickens to share. For the height, make it 10" to 11" tall and they won't poop in it! It is easy to build with 1x12 lumber.

A friend of mine has 10 chickens. 6 nest boxes, and they only use 2 boxes. She said they will wait their turn for the box they want! So silly! We will be keeping 20chickens, 18hens and 2 roos, for the winter. (We decided to keep breeders instead of buying chicks every spring). So we will have 8boxes. During the summer we have up to 65 chickens. We are doing 4 small boxes, and 1 long communal box. Trying to make it all from 1 sheet of osb, and scrap 2x4s. Thank you for the info on box height, I was going to make my boxes much taller. I will redraw my plans before getting out my saw.

I just turned 2 short/half kitchen cabinets into nesting boxes. We screwed them together and there are 2 open areas for them to lay. It is working great!

Great video. When I first got back into chickens I fell for the 'lie' that you need X amount of boxes per chickens. As you said, I have six also and they all use the same box and the same corner so I switched to a communal box. Works great! Thank you for the info.

Well done video. Simple straight forward explanations for what you have done. I have been reviewing quite a lot of videos in preparation for getting chickens for the first time. I aim to build a roll away communal box, to be even more sure of getting clean unbroken eggs.
You mentioned that you don't know why some of your chickens lay their eggs in the sand. I bet also that your chickens like to sleep in the nest box, if they have access at night. The reason, from what I am learning, is that your nest box is too high. It needs to be below their roosts. Just off the ground enough to keep clean.

We never had any of them sleep in the nest boxes. Like you said, if the nest box is too high they will want to sleep in it - our box was lower so they always chose to sleep on their perches. The best nesting box tip I have is keep it short inside so they can't stand up, then they won't poop in it. We had all regular sized chickens so we made our nesting box about 11" tall inside and the box stayed clean the whole time. Also, the black plastic mat was amazing, never had a broken egg, and just shook it out once in a while to get sand out of it. Thanks for watching :)

Thank you so much for this video, you just saved me a whole lot of unnecessary time and work. Im definitely doing this, but what height would you recommend for jersey giants? I dont want it too tall because i have black astrolarps and Orpingtons too
