Just an idea of how I made mine, I put the floor of the next boxex on a slant of about one inch, so the eggs can roll off, the back of the box cut about two inches shorter,so the eggs can Roll off to a tray at the back, that can be made from fencing or more glamorous trays from craft shops, kitchen shelves.the floor of the nest box I put rubber mat,cut to size ,used also for young calls, I positioned the boxes out from the wall, just enough to walk behind them to collect the eggs, I also raised them about two feet of the floor,as the hens would want to sleep in them at night, and dirty them, finally I made a fold up step to stop going into them, opened it in the morning and the hens can hop up to the step to lay the eggs, its great the eggs are always clean, the don't even notice the eggs rolling off. This might be helpful.
I like how you showed a photo 📷 of what you were actually cutting, you make good videos, I just made a chicken coop and I am about to make the nesting boxes 📦, thanks
Thanks so much for the kind words, I almost didn't do the photos of what I was cutting, but I thought it might help to see a visual of what exactly is happening. Congrats on the new coop, let me know if you make some nesting boxes like these!
I have 7 new chickens that will be laying sometime in Feb/March. Super glad you mentioned the Lowe's cutting them up for you. They definitely got more tools than me and will make transport easy. Going to follow this video and give it a shot, thanks for the upload
Update Lowe's by my house would only do two cuts per piece of wood, according to the "rules". Something about overusing the machine and if others need to use it. (No one else was using it lol) Anyways, I just had them cut panel twice to fit in vehicle and make it easy to cut at home, a cut at 26 inches, and 52 inches. (Then I split those in half to get the four long pieces from video.)
Thanks a lot! Good luck with your build! Just want to give people a sense of how they can be put together, measurements can be customized to your own liking.
Thank you very much! I know I mention the clamps a lot in this video, but that's because they were so useful for a project like this. They are only like $15 for a pack of four and it just made this so much easier to build. This was my first time trying them. And as for the boxes, we have been getting about a dozen from our ladies daily!!
Ricardo, I went to Lowes today which I realize it's 2 years later, but they don't cut for free anymore. Though it was only 25 cents per extra cut but it had to be. Thanks rob I'm going to make your boxes.

Awesome video and so helpful and clear! So, how do you attach the box? We’re planning to have the box hang off on the outside. Do you have a video attaching it to the coop? Thanks again!
Thank you! We don’t have it hanging on the wall, we just have it placed on a couple of cinderblocks in our large walk-in coop. I dont think I changed the measurements. If I did, I'm sorry, this video is just intended to help you put one together. People could even make them in different dimensions, but still apply this technique on assembling such a thing.
We have it about 16 inches off the ground but just make it high enough so the chickens can jump in comfortably but also feel safer that something on the ground can’t steal their eggs. We have ours on 2 cinder blocks on each side. Thanks for watching!
If I’m adding this to a coop, do you suggest putting it on top of something (a wooden pallet off the ground)? If so, do you have a video building such a thing?
I think it came out great the only thing that I would do differently is just to add on any roosting poles I use cord on it a wrap it real tight it’s easier for the chickens feet because of something to latch onto
Thank you! We did add a rooster bar at the end 😊 we like using flat roost bars though as we think chickens prefer them. Their foot is designed to lay flat not curl like parrots. They will use flat or round roost bars just fine, we just think it’s a little easier on them
Nice job. What's the distance between the nest box and the roost? How do you prevent the chickens from pooping on top of the nest box since you have not put a sloping top?
I think the distance on the roosts is about 6 inches or so. We have another set of nesting boxes on top of these that does have the slope roof. When we didn't have the slope roof, we used a piece of plywood resting on the nesting boxes against the wall to deter chickens from jumping on there to poop on it.
Just curious if you know with certainty that chickens aren't roosting on that bar on the front, just seems inviting, I love it but would worry they roost there, thanks. Just picked up a bunch of wood, I'm converting part of a garage into a chicken house
We collect our eggs at night when we lock up the coop as our evening routine. The chickens are always sleeping on the roost bars, not the nests. If you want to prevent that have your roost bar area (sleeping arrangements) higher than the nesting boxes. Chickens desire to sleep as high as possible as instinct for predator safety and to show their dominance in the pecking order. Just don’t have the roosts too high or they could get a leg injury flying down in the morning. You could omit the bar easily though because they really don’t require it, even our ducks jump in the boxes and we just have this sitting on cinderblocks for height reference. We have 2 stacked on top of each other so the bar comes in handy for the chickens wanting to lay in the top box. They like to walk in and peak their head in to decide which box they want to choose to lay in that day 😂 silly ladies. Good luck on your build!
Hey, sorry I thought I replied to this long ago. I ended up writing the dimensions in the description of the video because of your question. I'm sure it's too late now, but yeah.
@@BockBockBouquet He doesn't explain his measurements to well. Cause you can't get 4 dividers at 12 1/2.. They would have to be 12 with a 4 foot piece.
Is there any way you can make another video of these nesting boxes.the measurements are not coming out right.i built one yesterday and the back of the box wall and top is overlapping about 1/2 inch.this is how I cut them.i cut 3 peices at 13 in x4ft.i had to cut two pieces at 12 1/2 inches by 4ft.you can't get 5 dividers from a 4 ft piece.i cut another piece at 12 and a half by 4 ft to get the fifth divider. What throws off the measurements is the dividers. When I first put the two sides on the ends there was a lip overlapping. When I flipped it over upside down like you did in the video I had to set the back wall on top of the overlapping lip which is 13 in. that wall is overlapping when I set the top of the box on there. I wish I could show you a picture of it but like I said the dividers is throwing everything off. So the 4-foot piece I cut the dividers from was 12 and a half by 4 ft and I cut 5 dividers at 12 inches. If you look in your description that's what you got. You got three pieces at 13 in. One piece at 12 and a half inches by 12 in. one piece at 3 in. the box came out okay it's just the overlapping from the back of the box and top of the box.
I was wondering if these nesting boxes are " One size fits all" We have a couple of Large Breed Birds and we're looking to build something they'll be comfortable in. Thank you!
Yes our huge Brahmas and Wyandottes fit in here and even our big Muscovy and Cayuga ducks lay in them every day as well. Even seen a rooster hop in every now and then to get the nest “ready” for the ladies lol
What is the thickness of the plywood? I attempted this with 3/4” plywood, cut all of the boards out, and when I went to assemble it the way you did in the video the boards didn’t match up. Was it 1/2” board you used?
Yes it was 1/2 inch plywood, that might have thrown off your measurements. Nothing that you can’t fix though, let me know if you have any other questions. Best of luck

How thick is the plywood? I couldnʻt find that dimension...
Hello it is 1/2 inch plywood
Great video thanks! Where did you get the nesting pads from?
Thank you! We have them linked in the description and I’ll link it here as well

Thanks!
My pleasure, welcome to our channel!
What size screws did you use? I want to make sure they are not too thick and will break into the plywood.
Predrill to not split the wood. We use 1.5 inch screw
Love the video. What thickness was the plywood?
It says in description 1/2 inch thick plywood.
Steve at Woodworking for Mere Mortals was so right when he said 90% of woodworking is building a box.
Greattt I got 3/4 cause I was scared for it to split
Where do you ordering your nesting pads from?
thank you sis for the knowledge it's very useful for me... if I order it can you send it or not. Greetings breeders from Indonesia
What kind of wood are you using
Question ? So the fourth section is 12 and a half inches, and the first 3 measured at 13 inches
How high should the nesting boxes be from the floor
How far off the ground do you set it?
