I made my bucket nests about 7 years ago. I used 10 buckets 5 on top and 5 on the bottom with perches in front. I used a dry wall screw inside each bucket to attach it to the wall. After having it finished and full of straw the hens preferred only one or two of the buckets and the rest remain unused till this day. I also have used old kitchen sinks, the double kind currently and they fight over that as well. I can't win. I love my hens anyway.
hahaha, they fight on the same bucket and the rest of the buckets remain empty mostly. I solved this issue a little bit by placing plastic eggs on each bucket either one egg or two plastic eggs on each bucket.
Now you need perched for them to fly onto so they can easily walk into the nest or just put the 4 top nests down on the same level as the 1st 2 nests at almost floor level. They can hurt thrir feet if they jump from too great of a hight.
I like the set up. Definitely need perches that’s why w watched the full video. The lip in the bucket is to thin . Good in a way they wont sleep or poop in the buckets. Some 2”x2” perches wood be awesome. I’m going to thy this set up out. Awesome job.
I just made a coop for 4 by putting 4 kitty litter buckets in my old compost box! I'm finishing the roof this weekend! Thanks so much! How are the chickens liking their new home?
Nice repurpose! I love giving old things new purpose. The chickens are using the nest boxes relatively well, they only use the bottom and middle two buckets, I still need to add some bars or something else they can use to land on, the lip of the bucket is too thin and gives them nothing to hold onto, but otherwise they use the ones they can easily get to no problem
@@vnrkain1169 you’re welcome! They use the bottom four buckets the most along with the two “spaces” on the floor under them, but they never use the top two, but I also never got around to making a landing bar for them to really get up there easily 🤷♀️
I could have, but I didn’t have any large head screws and the wall is only about half an inch thick, so it wouldnt hold very well over time. So this worked better in the long run
Their roost bars are another foot higher than these, so no height issues. They use the bottom and middle buckets fine but they don’t like the top ones, I want to add some rest bars in front of them for them to have an easier time flying up to them and landing
@@lifeofagypsyfarmgirl my hens have actually been using them just fine and seem to prefer them over the other nest boxes I have for them, I do need to add a perch for them so it’s a bit easier on their feet, but that hasn’t stopped them ☺️
@@lifeofagypsyfarmgirl yep, just brush out the old bedding and put new in… hosing them out is a breeze too if they get really messy, but they’re usually just dusty
They typically only use the two bottom and middle nest boxes, but I have a few chickens that like to roost on the top of it. They just jump/fly up there. Chickens can easily jump/fly 8+ feet. Their roost bars are higher up then those top buckets.
Great vid! Dumb question loading…but how do the chickens get in? I see some coups with ladders. Got me thinking they need ladders or stairs. They smart enough to just fly in?
Love this
go girl!!
I havent seen anything like this before. I love it!
Thank you!
Sturdy and functional.

@@davidbarrera308 haha, sounds about right! Mine have 12 total to choose from and they faithfully only use 4 of them 🤦♀️ silly hens

@@nnk90 truth! I’ve walked in on two of them sharing a bucket on more than one occasion! Silly birds 😂

Wow very nice and clever idea I think wil make some for My pigeon loft also yes
Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for watching!
Looks awesome. You come up with some Great ideas. Hope it works out for you.
Thank you! They’re still holding out on eggs right now, so hopefully soon they’ll show some interest in the new boxes 🤷♀️
I like your idea pretty cool. Also you can make them out of plastic milk crates. Love your video. Thanks for sharing.

Great work done. Appreciate your effort. 😊
A jig saw would work well for this also.
love it great video
Nice
Thanks for the idea. Mu hens arrive in a week and I just happen to have some buckets which need a use. Did your hens take to the buckets easily?

@@FarmGirlInProgress thank you for your reply.
Greeting from the Philippines. Do try to bolt all the bucket together and screw 'em to the wall
Good job!
Snow here on the ground in South Dakota 💨 and my chickens are freezing their nuggets off.
No snow here yet, but we are starting to get frosty nights and foggy mornings. It’s definitely on its way!
What did you do for the bottom lip on the box? I live the design for easy clean up. Genius!!
I just cut the lid of the bucket out and left a lip to keep bedding and eggs from falling out. Super easy to clean!
What a great idea. Gonna f igure out if we can make it so I can take the buckets out to clean.
It’s worked really well for us so far!
Couldn’t have ran large head screws in the bottom of the buckets to hold them onto the wooden wall ?
I could have, but I didn’t have any large head screws and the wall is only about half an inch thick, so it wouldnt hold very well over time. So this worked better in the long run
A dry wall screw will do the trick.
How far off the ground did you put the first nesting box bucket
Roughly a buckets space I believe, it may be a bit more than that. I didn’t measure lol
Is the height an issue for the chooks to get to ?
Their roost bars are another foot higher than these, so no height issues. They use the bottom and middle buckets fine but they don’t like the top ones, I want to add some rest bars in front of them for them to have an easier time flying up to them and landing
