Such a ground breaking song. Thanks for doing this, you guys nailed it down to the overdubbed 16th note hi-hats being panned from left to right. Love these videos!
Please do any Martin Hannett produced Joy Division/New Order song since he made drummer Stephen Morris record every drum separately… perhaps the single version of ‘She’s Lost Control’ since Stephen used a can of aerosol spray on the percussion track? Ceremony would also be good! Great video as always!
Fun video but they played it safe. The drums are nowhere near distorted and smashed enough for that Fridmann sound. A Level-Loc / Lever-Or would’ve really helped
These are always such a highlight of the week, I hope y'all enjoy making them as much as we all love seeing them! Would love to hear some White Stripes, something like Ball and a Biscuit, or My Doorbell with that room sound
I know what the "trick" you're looking for is, and it's super amusing to watch someone try to figure it out. Single piece of very affordable, highly available gear that handles both the width and the distortion. And it's done in tracking, not in the mix. I've been doing it for 19 years. Listen to the tracks "Marry Me" and "Your Lips Are Red" by St. Vincent. Same process.
Also this is first video I’ve seen you guys on but the drummers from bloc party and that arctic monkeys guy both have a really idk like sticky and bouncy sound recreating those records on drums would be pretty fkn cool imo but I will love anything you do now forever coz of this video 😍 absolute fkn weapons
Odd to think of a drum sound from Drummer's Perspective. Albini does this too. No drums in any song sound like "you're sitting behind the kit." Also seems an odd goal, as a producer, as the rest of the mix isn't presented as "what the drummer would be hearning." A proper drum sound - if it must be visualized as being in space (as opposed to the Abstract shapes/forms most people see in their minds, synesthetically) - would seem best represented as being sort of Behind the other instruments, perhaps in the manner one usually sees bands on-stage from an audience perspective. That said, these folks once again got a great sound. So more power to Noam; Telefunken into another Telefunken is bold, as is the choice of 421. Very good work (even the distorted synth).
What Decapitator settings (Style specifically) are you usually putting drums through? Learning that plug in right now and would be great to have some ideas :) Thanks Reverb I love these videos!
I invented a drum tuner than turns all the rods simultaneously and I have the patent for it I would really appreciate it if I could have conversation with either or both of you about it maybe send you one? Anyway all good if you’re too busy but you can imagine how pumped I was to find this channel and this video ❤️ 🥁 Love your work fkn keep it up guys !
@@blashuvecthat’s a great idea. I’ve not talked with him but I did chat with Greg snow when I got a Harris compressor. He’s the tech that mods the units.
@@HANGINGOUTWITHAUDIOPHILES that's awesome!! do you happen to have his contact info? i recently got an msp-90 as well and was wondering what Greg Snow did on Dave Fridmann's! Also got an audimax and i wanna do his mod on it as well
Tonally close but overall feels a little too dry. That first fill in the song definitely has some space. But I do appreciate seeing your process in trying to deconstruct these sounds. That's really where the value is here, not whether it ends up exactly the same or not (though sometimes it's damn close!)
It would be really helpful if yall spent a little time detailing the drum tuning/muffling techniques as that is just as important as mic and mixing techniques. This only really gives us half of the pieces to the puzzle.

We need another Dave Fridmann drum sound video, Race For The Prize by the Flaming Lips!
The sound on that is titanic
i too enjoy smashing drums on my Empiracle Labs Distressor...
Jessica might hate me, but I’d love to see you guys do Flim by Aphex Twin
This!
I would absolutely love this. Always questioned if this was a real kit or not.

Great video as always!
I believe there was use of broadcast radio limiters to get this sound. Including, if I’m not mistaken the Audimax 4400 (Dave Fridmann/Greg Snow Mod)
Heck yes! This is such a great song, love the snare sound you landed on!
Love Dave Fridmann
MGMT was a breath of fresh air as opposed to everything else I was listening to at the time.

yeah, I thought the same

Great video! How about Out On The Weekend by Neil Young. Drums by the awesome Kenny Buttrey.
Some of the most beautifully played & recorded drums out there 🙏

Ahh Yes, back when one could learn that trick for the price of a state tuition..
Amazing!
Dire straits 1978, please
I still say how about Tom Sawyer by Rush. I want to see Jessica behind as many drums as you can find. 😂
It sounds huge. Drum machine power but with the human feel and liveliness. Thanks for the video!
Tony Thompson - Power Station - Some Like it Hot
These videos are the best -- great job to everyone involved

So mono and roomy. Just listen to 60s recordimgs
My all time favorite drum sound
My favorite TH-cam thingy!
Please do Bloc Party
Yesss, I love the drum sound on Like Eating Glass and that whole album
Seconded!
Killer drumming, but is it the most creative drum recording?
@@jacobgonzalez4419 The drums sounds on Waiting for the 7.18 on the 2nd album is worth a video.

sleeping bag was a nice touch 🔥
I would also love to hear a good recreation of the synth line on this track, I haven't heard a good recreation yet.
Also does any one have an idea of a plugin that could emulate what the Ashley EQ is doing to the snare?!

May have been the Harris MSP-90 Stereo dual-band FM Limiter

9:28 Rochester NY represent! 🔥
I feel like these videos are one giant advertisement for Zildjian K Sweet HiHats.
So, tube saturation, tube pres def sound better overloaded than solid state

Why didn’t we get to hear that dang cymbal?
