Nine Inch Nails (and Slipknot too) takes advantage of so much layering/ensemble arranging for what would normally be one-person one-take roles in the song; I think it gives a ton of interest and it's this sort of planning that keeps me coming back because there's always a new way to hear it.
The drums on this album are HUGE. Not enough love for With Teeth. Another great sound is on The Line Begins to Blur- Has the big layered sound but also is going though a gate or something into a totally clipped top layer that makes the peaks really crunchy and grimy.
This just goes to show how much Hugh Padgham's engineered drums on Peter Gabriel's "Melt" influenced not only the whole 1980s pop and rock scene, but also 1990s and early 2000s EBM groups.
@@specialops728 he's had other bands produce records at Studio 606. Alice in Chains recorded Black Gives Way to Blue there. When the Foos aren't using it, it's not being left to collect dust
So good, you're the best! The trusty Gretsch and trusty leopard print jumpsuit for the win. The pedal path sounds exactly like the cheap old Radioshack Realistic 32-1110 BBD delay with the line level signal feeding its mike preamp. This one is dope!
When I worked my warehouse job at Blamazon, this was our theme song...the drums are ultra important for the overall feel...& I never knew it was Dave playing it
Wow great breakdown and such tlc and devotion to getting it as close as possible 👊. This really gives you a deeper appreciation for the sound engineering and thought that goes into these songs. Well done 👍
Nice job. Those tambo hits are on the down beats and Dave plays the hats more aggressively. This one seems like it was very involved. You guys are champions!
A guy told me he hated NIN because it was just the same notes in a slightly different arrangement for every album. I said yeah, Mozart was a big fan of that as well. 😂 For real though, this is a great example of how he writes. Simple things and them works and works until you have a huge soundscape. Under appreciated by non musicians imo.
Very tasty, the separation is key due to the variation of room ambiences. I thought listening to NIN, that every drum had been recorded separately due to the clarity. I think the way you handled the snare reverb as mono was key, kept it really focused. Great job on a tough drum mix. Its one of my favorites due to all the nuances and you captured that well. 👍
we did Electricity by Ephemerals with a hand-struck kick drum! but for us it was more about separation for hard panning all the diff drum parts and then the drummer was finding it hard to just do his foot on its own so went for the hand!
That would be so nice to have a reconstruction of the drum sound of the jazz bossa nova masterpiece "Stan Getz, Luis Bonfa - Jazz Samba Encore!". It's a stapple in the '60s Latin Jazz sound of course. 🙏
Can you do The Cure’s ‘Seventeen Seconds’ album next? Maybe “Secrets” or “In Your House”? It has a super unique drum sound where the kick and snare almost sound like samples - but of course they’re not
I'm curious how close you could get to the drum sound of Astronomy Domine by Pink Floyd, from the "Piper At the Gates of Dawn" album. It's one of my very favorite psychedelic songs.
It is! But it wasn’t recorded that way. We didn’t realize we were filming it upside down, before Noam adjusted the mic. Though, we always encourage experimentation :)
yessss. though i dont think it would give much to talk about...seems to mainly be room sound. there are vids of albini explaining his technique. the trick to the huge room sound is 2 OMNI mics laying on the floor in front of the kit to the left and right
@@fuckcensorship69 hey, I’m all for less talking. I just love that record. I’ve watched the albini videos. Just want to see someone else try to replicate it.
At NIN concerts, they actually DO have 2 drummers (at least, sometimes 3 or 4). Just letting you know, because you appeared to try to say that they kind of "cheat" live. This video was informative though, because it explained why despite only having 3 band members (who probably play multiple parts at separate times then mix them), there are usually multiple unnamed people playing backup live.
i need you to tell us at what moment they had 2 drummers... Alessandro played some percussions in 2013-2014 and that's all i can think of... yes there are also drum loops played alongside. but that's never 2 drummers. so what do you mean?

100% agree with this. Huge influence!
That snare sounds incredible!
It’s amazing how many of these drum sounds in this series were recorded at sound city
There was something about that room.
I wish Dave Grohl would use that magical console more. Or at least sell it to an all analog studio so people can actually use it.

great video! Trent Reznor is such a great engineering/producer mind. Next video could you attempt let’s Dance or Fashion by David Bowie?
Sounds incredible! I'd love to hear you guys go through "Inertia Creeps" by Massive Attack.
YES.

18 years this song's been out and I'm just finding out dave grohl drummed on it
Same
You can never talk enough about NIN
You nailed it! This sounds so good.

Guys, i'm addicted to this channel and everything you both do! AMAZING!!!

aww man, that final mix sounds f- awesome! thanks so much for you work

This is killer. Favorite episode yet. Good work.
Can’t say how closely it matches the original, but it sounds so good

This is some fun stuff, enjoyed the vid immensely!
I didn't know Dave Grohl played on that album!
... And Justice For All drum sound!
Finally a recreation of the master - Thank you!
I legit thought this was My Hero
Imo this is the best recreation from you guys so far. I think it sounds better than the original, good job
Love this series! Thanks for your hard work!
Wow this is exactly what I looking for. Thank You so much all the knowledge!!

holy shit that room mic processing is awesome
Dave Grohl is a monster in the drums. Btw that's my fav song from NIN ever ❤️. This drummer achieved it: th-cam.com/video/ysFxrPNjvNA/w-d-xo.html
Man, I love these videos!
wowwwww
def gonna use these samples
fantastic vid. I love this series so much. Can we get some Deftones maybe?
Would love to see a recreation of the Manipulator drum sound by Ty Segall!! For example Tall Man Skinny Lady
Do PJ Harvey's "Rid Of Me" !!!
Love that song
you guys should do the drums from Fiona Apples "when the pawn". so unique i've never heard drums that sounds quite like them
I second this. Jon Brions's playing and production on this album is top notch and very interesting!
Can you do The Cure’s ‘Seventeen Seconds’ album next? Maybe “Secrets” or “In Your House”? It has a super unique drum sound where the kick and snare almost sound like samples - but of course they’re not
I never took the time to listen to NIN, but this song sounds so good, i have to now 😊
I actually like the whole final output. Is there a way we can download it?
Didnt Dave use his floor hack for this song? Like he did with "First it giveith" and "Red War". Maybe he did the drums first then the cymbals after.
I couldn’t hit “like” fast enough
"Interwoven"
I'm curious how close you could get to the drum sound of Astronomy Domine by Pink Floyd, from the "Piper At the Gates of Dawn" album. It's one of my very favorite psychedelic songs.
Fuck yeah
Cool, great choice!
do joy divisionnnnnnn i love the snare on disorder
Any Karnivool drum sounds!
Nailed it ... Though isn't that 414 under the snare the wrong way around??
It is! But it wasn’t recorded that way. We didn’t realize we were filming it upside down, before Noam adjusted the mic. Though, we always encourage experimentation :)
Not bad, definitely missing the Lavry magic.
7:35 "make it sound cannibalistic"
Where can I go for my vegan music, then?
😛
really love the drum of this song
Please do the drum sound from Is This It by the strokes
How about Bob Clearmountain’s drum sound from Bryan Adams Reckless ?
Please do Bright Eyes’ “Gold Mine Gutted”
Do Bloc Party
How about the drums from “Carry On Wayward Son” by Kansas. 🤘
Do the drum sounds on neurosis’ “Times of Grace”
yessss. though i dont think it would give much to talk about...seems to mainly be room sound. there are vids of albini explaining his technique. the trick to the huge room sound is 2 OMNI mics laying on the floor in front of the kit to the left and right

When we gonna get Funky Drummer? (I’m just going to keep asking and asking and asking…)
Excellent job guys. Could you do ERASER by NIN?
Would love a pj Harvey vid!
Please do Hard To Explain by The Strokes or another song from Is This It
Soo Good!! 😉
Cool!
I am Trendt Reznor and this is exactly how we did it.
😍

You could just use a Roland kit.
Wow...look at u...u going places...good on u
