  • In this video I show how I create a faux aged-bronze patina & finish. The products I use are from www.SculptNouveau.com . I use the “Bronze B” and Tiffany Green patina spray. Other products I use are Krylon Crystal Clear and KIWI black shoe polish. Have courage when trying your hand at finishes. Its always possible to go back and touch it up or try again entirely. FREE education here all day!
    Is there anything that you’ve wished had a different finish in your home? What about a picture frame or maybe a stone statue in the yard? Let me know what projects you think you might try in the comments below.

    Very interesting to watch and super helpful as I have been looking for a good way to recreate this type of finish for a long time. Thank you very much! A couple of questions. 1) If you do not want the white aging effect, but just the browns and blacks, do you just not use the Tiffany Green? 2) Do you spray the completed piece again with Krylon or some type of clear sealer? I am just wondering about the shoe polish coming off when someone was to clean the piece or dust it.

      @JonBurnsFineArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the compliment Yasser. I don't work with brass. But brass is composed of a significant amount of copper. Contact Art Nouveau, in the description, and see if they have samples. 🙂

    How would you you stain or terra cotta red sculpture so it looks terra cotta and yet a bit more deep and not so matte? I didnt want to remove the look of the terra cotta, but just make it look like the clay is wet.

    • @JonBurnsFineArt
      @JonBurnsFineArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What's the original material? Terracotta?

    • @motardsquid
      @motardsquid 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JonBurnsFineArt yeah fired water clay.

    • @JonBurnsFineArt
      @JonBurnsFineArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok. The Holy Grail of terracotta. Lol. It's difficult to get that look. However, there are ways such as "terra sig" or terra sigillata. You need to apply it during the greenware stage and buff it. I'll post a link here for more info. ceramicartsnetwork.org/daily/pottery-making-techniques/ceramic-decorating-techniques/terra-sigillata-101-make-apply-troubleshoot-terra-sig/
      Another option is to take the firing to at least cone 6. It vitrifies the clay, which shrinks it to 80% of its original size and exposes weak points by way of cracking. It doesn't have a wet look but a more solid look, not so porous, but a deep brick red color. Don't experiment with a piece you consider precious.
      Go for the terra sig 1st. Good luck my friend! 👍

    This looks fantastic. I have been looking for a way to get a high-quality look for my new sculptures, similar to my previous bronzes, that is much less expensive. It's a lot harder to sell pieces that cost many thousands of dollars.
    I would like to figure out how to get the marbling effect that my patina guy can create on a real bronze while brushing the acid and hitting it with the torch in layers.

    • @JonBurnsFineArt
      @JonBurnsFineArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad my video helped your approach. Someday I'd like to share what I've learned about hot application patinas. I'm in no way a pro but I've watched it done enough to know some techniques. The marbling effect is from a spritzer bottle at a particular temp that evaporates the water immediately leaving the ferric or cupric spray pattern. Anyway if I can sort that out in a cold finish, I'll share it on my channel. Cheers!

      Hi Mozhgan! Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad this video helped you a lot. The chemical spray I use is called Tiffany Green. It's a product from Art Nouveau. Very interesting...watched your work all morning so far. I never used a proper paint-on finish... but then I can't get my patinas to be very consistent either. Use a mix of denatured alcohol, powdered graphite, food coloring, and cheap crafters acrylic rose gold, bronze or copper. Applied best with a make-up brush.... Then buff buff buff with soft cotton. Often needs multiple layers with potential for any of my surface repairs to not absorb evenly and stick out. Cast in Ultracal for my faux bronze, or FGR, since hydrostone doesn't take the alcohol.... my work, however is so rough-cast usually....I have never figured out how to get smooth surfaces on the original art...haven't found where you ID the type of clay you're using.(...from a supplier in Indiana?). I didn't see you using any solvent when brushing the final surface on your clock kids, though you mentioned lighter fluid and spit.... It's a non-sulfur, but not water-based, as you seem to keep working it throughout. Anyway...I'll keep watching and absolutely have to learn how to make less finicky molds, as I'm living on them (120+ of them I believe to date) and can't cast and finish fast enough. Switching over to silicon from urethane molds and need to stabilize my processes....so I'm watching videos now instead of catching up on production. You've been a great teacher....helping me think through a 2 or 3-part mold remake of my Solzhnetzyn piece after the 1-part slit urethane mold shredded its last on the final cast in Monsterclay & wax. Hi Harry. I apologize for not responding sooner. I found your comment in my "held for review" folder. I'm glad you've found my videos informative enough to watch several. Thank you! Yes, the clay I use is oil-based clay, plastilina, plasticine. It's all the same. I do cut my clay with lighter fluid or for a more mild type of solvent plain, old saliva. If you do this however, let it air dry before molding and consider using Krylon crystal clear to seal and eliminate toothy texture in the clay. I've got links in the description to Amazon so it can be delivered to your door. I read an article on your start and congratulate you on pursuing sculpture in retirement. Honoring people in clay is a big deal. Cheers.

      Hey Kenneth. I would love to be making some sweet videos again. And this video will be next. I just have to wait for an opportunity to have my time open up again. I saw your comment from before and I'm sorry I haven't responded. I believe I taped it up with blue tape. But there's a better way.
      When attaching the arms, etc., drill multiple holes (5 - 6) into both mating surfaces. Mix up some epoxy putty and pack it into all holes. Finally put a layer of epoxy between the two surfaces and sandwich the two parts together. Use masking tape, blue tape whatever you've got to hold it together until cured. Those filled holes will become like resin hard rods creating one solid form. Plus it has a nice ring throughout when you give it a finger thump. 👌Of course you'll have to clean it up. I hope this helps.

    Amazing work here, both the sculpt and the paint work.
    I got both the Bronze B, and Tiffany green patina from Sculpt Nouveau, applied the bronze b to my sculpture, sprayed with the patina, and nothing happened. I made sure the bronze was still wet when I sprayed it, but nothing happened. I tested it out on one sculpture, gave it 2 days for results, and there was literally no change. I tried another sculpture tonight, and again, no change. What am I missing?

    • @JonBurnsFineArt
      @JonBurnsFineArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Tiffany Green should have a acidic smell. That's all the verifying I would do there. With the Bronze B, shake the can vigorously to suspend the bronze powder in the acrylic paint base. My guess is that the Bronze B wasn't shaken, mixed etc before application.
      If you did these things and applied the Tiffany in the wet Bronze B, contact the SculptNouveau and ask for a replacement.
