See a sculptor recreate Antonio Canova’s “Venus” step-by-step, from clay to marble | Time Lapse Art

Master sculptor Fred X. Brownstein recreates Antonio Canova’s sculpture “Venus” using Canova’s unique 200-year-old techniques over the course of 6 months.
How does Brownstein go from a foot-high clay sketch to a near-identical marble copy of one of Antonio Canova’s most famous sculptures? Watch this behind-the-scenes time lapse using Canova’s marble sculpting process to find out!
Brownstein uses his hands and small, wooden tools to create a rough clay sketch model called a bozzetti. He then moves on to a full-scale modelli that is cast in plaster, creating a hollow mold. This mold, in turn, serves as the basis for a refined plaster model that’s copied into a marble version where Fred makes the final touches.
Where Canova had a workshop with assistants, Fred did all of the sculpting himself!

Indeed, but the clay would last a couple weeks, the plaster a couple centuries, while the marble will last for thousands of years. That is how we got our cultural heritage, how societies built things that would last, and amaze people so far away in time.

@@Elviloh That's absolutly right : the marble can resist at the centurys and more. But, I never said another thing. I just say that, for me, not for everybody, the steps are art.
You see ? Not an invest made by interest because of the longevity of my buying... Just for the beauty. The finess of the lines, the curves, the grain of the material. You're probably right. I'm a poet... And, you know probably that in certain archaeological dig sites, sometimes, some clays figurines are founded, even if they are a little bit or more broken, and all the personns who work on this dig site exult... Maybe they are poets too...

The fact that he had to repeat the process THRICE and with three different techniques! He first sculpted it with clay using the additive method, then make a cast with plaster of paris, and then sculpt the same out of a marble slab using the subtractive method. This is absolute monk like concentration.
