I got your back Other Joe! Your synopsis nails this film perfectly. The original did just about everything better than the remake. The pacing of the remake is horrible, the character development is very lacking and parts of the story felt very rushed which took away the tension of the scenes that were supposed to be scary. 5/10
I think the remake did most things better than the original. The original was pretty cheesy and low budget, the acting wasn't very good either, and the character motivations not explained
The ending of the original film is pretty close to the book. Its probably for the best.
Windigo was in the background. When the dad carried the daughter to the place he stopped in the swamp and if you look close the windigo was in the distance moving eerily
speaking of which, the wendigo was always in the original movie, but was never explained, so those who read the book would catch on to why they kept making bad decisions like burying Church, but average moviegoers would only see it as a spooky sound effect.

The wendigo is supposed to be always at the edge of your vision, but never fully seen.
Just to point out that during the scene where the father is carrying his daughters body across the pet semetery, he looks off to his right and there's like silhouette of something standing in the woods watching him. I believe that was the only shot of the wendigo.
It makes sense that we never actually saw it because in the book they never actually saw the Wendigo, they only heard it as they walked past the deadfall and to the other cemetery.
Maybe the Wendigo is Pennywise. 🤫
@@blazingocean4206 well, it sounds silly at first but if you notice the scene where the mom is in traffic calling Judd, the road sign says "Derry".
It does show the Wendigo. When The dad is taking Elle to the burial ground, it is visibly moving in the background at one point and then fades away all creepy.
I saw that too! He stops when carrying the daughter for a minute and in the background there is the wendigo! We just don't see it

Hey joe, at around 16:10, the camera for you seems to bug out. I work with cameras, you may want to check up on that. Only seen it once and when I’ve seen that happen, the sensor starts to go bad, like this so joe sees it

Im kind of with other Joe, I don't know the movie just didn't hit me. And for a horror movie it wasnt scary, was really predictable and followed a generic route. 6/10
True, but AJ has also the point that they did make some good decisions in it. Just movie for many reasons didn't land anyway..
TheRezro yeah I completely agree, I liked the Zelda stuff a lot. But I had to be more critical considering it’s a remake, and I just didn’t feel it did enough to gather my interest. Especially the first half of the movie really explained a lot and set up and by the end it just didn’t pay off.

I havent seen this one yet, and i dont remembre the original quite clearly anymore but i hope they added one thing from the book..
The story which Jud tells to Louis about his youth when the one guy comes back and was living with his father.. And Jud and his friends went there to handle that but the dude who came back started speaking all ominous things to them and they got scared.
I dont remember that being in the first movie, but that was eerie in the book.
No, the only story they keep in this movie is that Jud made his dog come back, they skip the second story when the son/soldier came back.
The Wendigo was always in the 89 movie. They just never outright explained it like they did in this version. "Just a loon"
Poor Judd had his achilles tendon severed and these boys call it a "cut ankle" ;p
I think I like Pet Sematary more so due to the concept of it than the quality of any of the movies.

They're not demons from hell, the folklore behind the burial ground is indian based.
The sematary was actually a legit indian cemetary until the Wendigo (evil flesh eating spirit of the woods) came and corrupted it, after which those buried under there rose up (the bodies) with a similarly evil spirit inside.
The memory and stuff is still the same, but the soul is long gone.
You do know that definition of demon is quite broad? There is no point in nitpicking that..
The definition of demon sure, "demon from hell" is much more narrow. The indian folklore of the Wendigo has little to do with hell.
In fact in the book it's shown that both Church and the resurrected kid developed a taste for human flesh after returning to life. Either way, hell has little to do with this.

I read finished the book 1 hour before watching this movie, so the past 150 pages were still fresh in my mind. I love the book but the movie doesn’t come close to terror or character development of any of the characters except Rachel. The relationship between Louis and Jud should have been expanded to have more an impact towards the ending.
To be honest, I don’t believe the story of Pet Semetary works as a two hour movie. This movie lacks the development of characters and the impact the book had. It should’ve been a 5-10 episode miniseries on Netflix
Completely agree with you. This movie completely missed the point of the story. Jud was basically a father to Louis is the book. This film shit on the source material

daniel mayer I agree, but that’s just movies and books in general. Stephen king has a great book called “on writing” where he parallels reading a book as telepathy between the writer and the reader, and he’s right. It’s just not possible to recapture what your imagination fills in with your own personal flavor.

There was a small scene when he’s on his way to bury he’s daughter and you see the monster in the woods, so you do kinda see it.
What does Hollywood have no imagination anymore? How about some new movies without remaking old movies.
They are constantly making new movies. It's just those movies aren't doing so well.
The remakes are what makes money.
And they have to keep doing what makes them more money.
Thanks for making my point, "those movies aren't doing so well". And yes they have always had remakes of older movies, but they have always had new IP's that were good to go along with those remakes. Take out all the superhero movies, that seem to flood the market at this point, and everything else is dog shit compared to the past. So again "no Imagination" and very little talent left in Hollywood.
Capt_C 27 Remakes sell. Also, different minds; different story telling. I'd love if someone gave me a shit ton of money and equipment and told me to remake a horror film. Just because someone thinks a remake is dog shit, doesn't mean the director of said remake wasn't passionate about the original. I'm sure these guys absolutely loved writing the script, directing, giving nods to the original, etc.

Hey Joe! Wanted to let you know that your videos are kind of quiet lately. Might want to consider turning up that input. Keep up the good work bud.
This movie is hard to give one score. I had to divide it up. Because the first 2/3 of the film were fantastic. The directors excel with atmospheric horror, tension and build up. The last 1/3 of the movie felt very rushed and cobbled together. Once Ellie starts killing, nothing really felt scary like the first part of the movie. I think she was too talkative and the whole cliche "Mommy doesnt like me. Blah blah blah" thing really took me out of it. Zelda was extremely well done and I love all the buildup to the killing scenes. But the killing was poorly executed in my opinion. Overall, I enjoyed the film.

Agree the ending part felt rushed, when the dad died at the perfect time when he was about to kill the daughter pissed me off, but the ending was fitting tbh, he messed with things beyond human understanding and payed the price, wonder what’s gonna happen to the little kid having a demon family and all lmao

I just saw it and instantly realised the Easter egg hinting at IT with the sign of Derry in the scene when the mother was in traffic driving back to the father.
Well, it's said that even if ”Pennywise” the avatar of IT is dead. His true form still influences the evil that happens in Derry, Maine. (Maine was on the map scene in the computer)

@@salitary he might care a little, but I doubt he would cry over it. They aren't Superman! Plus, characters like Spiderman have been replaced so many times. These characters could easily be replaced by someone better in my opinion.

The opening shot of the movie shows the aftermath. There are bloody handprints in the window of the car door, which is standing wide open.
And Zombie Ellie’s lines in the new movie were closer to Zombie Gage’s lines in the book.

I don't know if I missed it or if it didn't get discussed, but how did they pull off Pascow? In the original film, the jogger Pascow was (strangely) my favorite character, and his spirit cam to Louis multiple times to warn him not to bury anything in the cemetery. Does the new Victor Pascow stand up to the old one?

Joe if you really like pet semetary I highly suggest you listen to the audiobook on audible read by Michael C. Hall (Dexter). He did it so well, his performance still haunts me until this day.

near the beginning, why was lewis' feet muddy from the cemetery despite not knowing about it yet? why was victor constantly appearing, particularly to lewis? how does gage see the ghost? what was the point of the zelda backstory, what did it add for the mum? why was dead Ellie ok with Lewis one minute, then wanted to kill him at the end, she just wanted to kill rachael? So many pot holes, it was meh for me - 5/10

It seems like they borrowed from the story Judd tells him in the book. Lewis asks Judd if anyone had buried a person up there, and Judd changed the subject. Then later, Judd tells Lewis about the time someone did, and that the person came back and was in the house, but got more and more violent. Like Ellie did.
Due to the demon being a wendigo like they mention earlier in the film then I like to think that all three of them eat gage, the wendigo is a spirit that makes people crave human flesh and with the blood being shown near the front door and the window of the car I think that's what happened. But I just like the implication of that better then the idea that they all just became ghouls as I think it is more creepy.

There literally is a Wendigo in the background when he goes to burry his daughter. That “moose thing” was the illustration in the book when John Lithgow is telling the dad about the Wendigo.
The bathroom scene was the creepiest for me. When he’s brushing Ells brittle hair and realize that they took her brain out. The look on the dads face that he realizes what he did might have been a mistake really added on to the tension

The thing about the daughter's crazy eyes when she comes back. I think that was from being hit by the part of the truck. It hit her in the back of the head, you can see they sewed up the back of her head when he is bathing her.
the opening scene u see the car door opened with bloody hand prints on the car window and blood splatter as well so u know Cage is dead. the little girl was spectacular playing 2 distinct different characters so well. that final scene really makes the movie.
Well we don't know for a total fact those could just be the blood of the corpse family there's ways to have Gage survive the creatures only started killing the family when the felt threaten who's to say Gage being a toddler didn't except them as his family you could go that way with a sequel have him be a crazy teen raised by the zombie family
It’s funny that I’ve never sat down and watched all of pet cemetery but the one scene that I’ve seen when flipping through the channels is where the kid cuts the old mans tendons....

They did show an outline of the wendigo in the distance when Lewis was carrying his daughter to the new grave.
The creed kid having the shining is a nice touch in both the original and the new one, even if it isnt specifically said.

At a certain point in the movie you can see right before the farther buries his daughter, a creature appears out of the mist staring at him.
They did show the windingo, when the dad is carrying the daughter to the Indian ground and it growls and they both stop, u see it in the background

There may be no Stephen King's cameo, but there is a reference to "It". When Rachel is stuck in traffic you can see a sign that says "DERRY 26", or something like that. I thought that was pretty cool and subtle.
In the computer map it also says Maine, which where Derry is located.

The scene where Ellie (Gage in the book) attacks Judd and her face changes to his wife does happen in the book.

@AntiHeroVisions i went into the movie thinking it would be serviceable. I was fighting sleep by the 45 minute mark. Eating cold popcorn to stay awake. And that ending pissed me off because it was so unsatisfying to sit through all that exposition for that

@@leob4403 more my thing, sure but they aren't purely my thing. I loved silence of the lambs and hannibal and those were very exposition heavy. But they weren't boring. They made you think. Nothing about these characters were interesting, nothing about their move was interesting; their family dynamic, no passion, nothing. John lithgow was cool but wasted.

i actully really liked this version im with joe 8 out of 10 at first i was kinda like how joe was feeling but as the movie goes on it picks up and has you really into it.

In the original 1989 version, the influencer and the manipulator the wendigo was never explained or mentioned. This 2019 version I think did well on, that explains why Judd shows him the burial ground in the first place and how they get lured back into what they know is dangerous and evil

Just like to point out that during the scene when Louis is carrying Ellie to the grave he looks left and if you look carefully you can actually see the Wendigo

One detail I haven't seen a lot of reviewers point out is that we can assume as an audience in the new one that the whole "procession" of kids as the mom calls it in the movie, are all wearing masks because they have been buried in the pet semetary and came back; the first thing Ellie does is come back wearing a mask. John Lithgow (Juddson), has a superficial answer to why he helped the dad bring back the cat: he says he did it for Ellie, to spare her from the loss, and because the dad can't handle death, but he knows the whole time that anything buried out there comes back evil. I think that the subtext is that Judd knows exactly what he is doing and there are way more people in this town who have been brought back. Judd is kind of like an agent who is heavily influenced by the Wendigo, and brings it sacrifices, he even calls it a ritual.
The wendigo is shown standing in the distances when the dads bringing his daughter to the grave, he looks to the right and stares at it.
in the original Judd is the reason everything happens, he is the actual antagonist, I always figured he knew Zelda and was angry with the family for her treatment, and set things into motion, only to be attacked by gage because of the intent

I don't know... this ending with them wanting to make a zombie army or whatever was kinda bland... in the book, if I remember correctly, there was this detail that the dead are crazier the longer they are dead and the more damaged their body was and in the end the dad is going to bury his wife and there is this (false?) hope she will be alright, because she wasn't dead for so long
I've read the book forever ago and I don't even remember that they had a daughter as well. 🤣
They managed to make this film even darker than the book. In the book Ellie's still alive and living with Rachel's parents. Which imo is a perfect setup for a Doctor Sleep-style sequel. But I doubt King will ever want to revisit this story because even he said the original book was too dark and didn't want to publish it initially. Which is a shame because I think it's one of his absolute best works.
Did they put the Ramones song in it? I don't wana be buried in a pet semetary, I don't wana live my life again.

I was hoping Louis would kill Church in this one. "Go on. Lie down. Play dead. BE DEAD!" is one of my favorite things about '89.
Didn't see v1 nor read the book
The fact that Pascow, the black youth that died of car accident appeared so early on, before even the cat died and was buried and came alive, kind of threw me off. Later he's no longer shown again, just like a couple of the subplots that went nowhere and doesn't seem to serve any purpose. Zelda, the mother's dead sister; why is the mother actually hearing/ haunted, by sounds of her sister moving upstairs; what did she do? I thought Zelda will somehow be coming back at this point.
And the reference to Jud's wife and also the Wendigo, why bother?
