11:00 no, you don't get it. That actually WAS the test. Everyone else just put up with the discomfort, but he took initiative to improvise. Which is a big thing in Men in Black.
The shooting range was the second test. As MiB you have to think, before you act and "Jay" showed that skill perfectly while the Army/Navy/Airforce Soldiers shoot before they think. In any regular combat situation, that comes in handy, because you identify your target and shoot. But in the agency, you could accidently harm or kill a friendly alien only because of his looks
@@Anthyrion Yes, adding on to that: Jay's observations about "Little Tiffany" mirror Kay's observations about Mikey in the opening scene. Mikey took on a disguise and traveled with immigrants, not realizing that being unable to understand another human language gives him away. Both Kay and Jay display an aptitude for sniffing out the truth, which is crucial for MiB, while both Mikey and Little Tiffany made the same mistake of missing context clues and ultimately gave themselves away (very much like "the British 3 vs the German 3" in Inglorious Basterds).
Men in Black as a concept comes from conspiracy theorist / UFO lore, where it is used to describe government agents (in black suits) who allegedly interrogate, harass, memory-wipe or assassinate UFO witnesses. So yeah, that's why the movie is called that. Somebody took that concept and ran with it.
Yeah and the original Aircel/Malibu Comic Book which was later bought out by MARVEL around the time the first sequel to this film was in production was based on all sorts of conspiracy theories, not just aliens and the MIB themselves were much more morally ambiguous like in the original concept from the 1950s than outright heroic like in The Film, Video Game, Theme Park attractions and animated series!
One of my fav quotes comes from this movie and it's from Tommy Lee's Char- "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it." Sad, but true.
The other great quote with a nice little nod to the US Forces: "Gentlemen, congratulations. You're everything we've come to expect from years of government training."

All Edgar needed to do was recognize the ships on that postcard, which is why he took it. 39:17 - The idea that the government knows about aliens and has been keeping the knowledge from the public has been around ever since people started believing aliens exist. One of the things to recognize with the marble scene is the scale of things. When you saw the galaxy on orion's collar, you commented on how small it is and if there are microscopic beings living in there. Put 2 and 2 together with the final scene being a relation to that scene. You thought that galaxy was small. Those aliens were playing marbles with several galaxies. To them, we would be just as tiny as you thought of the potential beings in the one on the collar. And what's to say that the marble playing aliens aren't in the same situation, and how many more levels does it go? Obviously, it is a plot point and not realistic since we can see several other galaxies outside the milky way, but it is something interesting to think about.

Arquillians, like the two aliens talking in the restaurant before the Roach attacked them, canonically see crystals as similar to rock candy. Diamonds are basically pure sugar to them, hence the mention of giving them to the children.
The DVD of this actually had a bonus feature of the scene where the ball bounces around the office but without the visual effects, and it's hilarious just watching people react to nothing and things moving for seemingly no reason whatsoever. It's probably somewhere on TH-cam if you want to look it up.
The dragonfly at the beginning was a reference to the fact that in The Comic instead of looking like giant cockroaches The Bugs in The Comic looked more like a mix of humans and dragonflies, also most of them aside from Edgar were pacifists like the Arquillians.
I went to Universal Studios and played the men in Black game and it was amazing because you basically you’re on the little car going around shooting at the aliens

I still call supermarket tabloids 'the Hot Sheets'. For more Tommy Lee Jones try THE FUGITIVE (1993), and the mini-series LONESOME DOVE (1989) a four-part Western mini-series based on a 1985 Larry McMurtry novel, starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones as former Texas Rangers who decide to become cattlemen in the 1870s. For an unrelated Action Rom/Com try ROMANCING THE STONE (1984) with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.
I really like the scene where all the potential recruits were shooting the targets and Will only shoots the little girl. if you think about it, it shows exactly the kind of perceptiveness an MIB agent would need. A majority of the aliens they'd be dealing with will be nonviolent so going in guns blazing every time they see a freaky alien would be bad. Whereas with an alien up to no good, you'd have to be on the lookout for subtle signs that wouldn't be immediately obvious to anyone else. It's a nice piece of subtle worldbuilding that isn't overtly explained to the audience but is obvious if you think about it.
Men In Black is my favourite Will Smith and Tommy lee Jones movie. I mean from both actors. My second favourite Will movie is Independence Day and Jones is The Fugitive
One of my favourite movies of the 90s. Always a fantastic reaction. Wynn (?)'s energy is amazing. So enjoyable to see you two reacting together. The banter is priceless.
6:07 Even if you can't see it, based on what you hear, it's probably best you couldn't. Sometimes it's what you don't see is scarier. 9:10 On imdb trivia they actually have the entire joke. 11:26 Real Test: who's smart enough to use the table. 11:55 Yeah he's not shooting indiscriminately like the others, he actually took time to analyze each target and come up with a good reason not to shoot. 12:36 K's like: Okay you still don't believe me, I'll just show you the aliens then to seal the deal. 16:44 This guy here plays Lurch in the Addams Family movies(Same director as Mib: Barry Sonnenfeld) 26:06 Remember Rosenberg was tiny too, for him and the other Arquillians the galaxy would be the size of a beachball. 31:01 That's the answer we all want it to be. 33:13 Just this giant squirmy bug with all those legs stuffed into the Edgar suit(and we've seen him constantly adjusting himself to keep from poking out like nails in a burlap sack) nevermind the fact that even his ship was way smaller than he is snd he still managed to fit in it. 38:12 Earlier Frank the pug says that something important can even be very very small like size of a marble or a jewel. The other galaxy was used as a jewel on the cats collar and this galaxy is being used as a marble.
I've seen this film I don't know how many times, but it was just today that I realized the joke about the NYPD acronym when he was chasing his 1st alien -- "[k]Nock Your Punk-ass Down!" And if you need more Tommy Lee Jones, might I suggest "The Fugitive?"
Vincent D'onofrio 😎 is one of my favorite actors - he was convincing as the cockroach here, but he's also amazing in Law & Order Criminal Intent, and as the whacked-out recruit in Full Metal Jacket. 👍
I love Tommy Lee Jones. My favorites of his movies are this, The Fugitive & U.S. Marshalls and Volcano. Another Will Smith favorite is Wild Wild West with Kevin Kline.
the tentacle attacking J was the Mother as she delivered the baby. Like when a mother squeezes the hand of their partner, she was banging him against the hood of the car as she brought her child into the world.
12:56 The other day Elon Kayo asked "How come there's no Flat Mars Society?" and the Flat Earth Society replied that's its been observed that Mars is round.
You guys are a great pair at reacting... The way you react together is lovely. You make a beautiful couple... Thor has found his Sif! I love this movie! MIB 2 is great as well, better even in some ways. The test scene means he passed, because he adapted to the situation in an unconventional way that no one else even considered. Something crucial in that line of work. The other test shows that he is using his brains instead of prejustice in a hostile situation. He's not going by how they look but what seems truly suspicious. Another crucial matter in that line of work. Not all aliens are bad even if we think they are odd-looking or even ugly.
I just love Will Smith's physical comedy! You should definitely watch the 90's series The fresh prince of BelAir! To this day still one of the most funny show, with his dancing 😆 And.... 14:22 - one of my most used gif ever 😂😂😂
Will Smith, after decades of TV and film work, has mentioned it was doing "The Pursuit of Happyness" (2006) where he learned what REAL acting was about. That was a film he did with his son, Jaden. From 'Happyness', Will seemed to want to explore more serious, subdued characters and did "Seven Pounds" (2008), an interesting exploration of trying to find self-forgiveness. Years later, Will decided to do a SciFi film with Jaden, even hired M Night Shyamalan to direct it, "After Earth" (2013). Will's character was set even deeper in that somber traumatized mindset. The film was panned when it came out, but I think it's another of those great films that were stupidly undervalued. Some saw it as a vanity project, but I think it's an excellent film.
Vincent D'Onofrio (Edgar and alien cockroach) gave one of the best performances of his career in this film 🤣

One of the best movies of the 90s 😊
Jones' Spanish is better than mine. Tommy Lee Jones played a cop in The Eyes of Laura Mars(1978).
16:44 This guy here plays Lurch in the Addams Family movies(Same director as Mib: Barry Sonnenfeld)
26:06 Remember Rosenberg was tiny too, for him and the other Arquillians the galaxy would be the size of a beachball.
I've seen this film I don't know how many times, but it was just today that I realized the joke about the NYPD acronym when he was chasing his 1st alien -- "[k]Nock Your Punk-ass Down!"
And if you need more Tommy Lee Jones, might I suggest "The Fugitive?"
You two should watch Galaxy Quest, I think you'd really have a blast!
Vincent D'onofrio 😎 is one of my favorite actors - he was convincing as the cockroach here, but he's also amazing in Law & Order Criminal Intent, and as the whacked-out recruit in Full Metal Jacket. 👍
13:01 he just saw a alternate futures right there
This is really such a fun movie and never takes itself seriously. You guys are a super cute couple and I love watching your reactions.
I love Tommy Lee Jones. My favorites of his movies are this, The Fugitive & U.S. Marshalls and Volcano.
Another Will Smith favorite is Wild Wild West with Kevin Kline.
The movie was named after this urban legend:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Men_in_black
You two are so adorable together.
Linda Fiorentino is a total badass in The Last Seduction. Wicked. 🖤
Dogma...
That wasn’t Linda Fiorentino. That was Wendy…Wendy Kroy…
Loved her in Dogma and this movie. Wish she was in more stuff! Wudda made a good Dr. Calvin in I, Robot.
I want to watch Men In Black 2 and 3.
At no point in history did a person ever think the Earth was flat...
Rip Torn was iconic in this
Next must be MiB2 and MiB3
Frank the pug is basically the only reason I like pugs.
It must be hard to make a video about this movie tiptoeing around the score! The Danny Elfman soundtrack plays a HUGE role
Part 2 when man?
Men in Black started as a comic.
the tentacle attacking J was the Mother as she delivered the baby. Like when a mother squeezes the hand of their partner, she was banging him against the hood of the car as she brought her child into the world.
12:56 The other day Elon Kayo asked "How come there's no Flat Mars Society?" and the Flat Earth Society replied that's its been observed that Mars is round.
comedy gold, the actors great, story...so much fun!
Nobody 'Really' retires from Men in Black. You MUST watch Number 2.
Wait you don't know about the whole men in black showing up after people report a UFO sighting?
Lucky guy. She's adorable ✌️❤️
12:56 lmaooo this interaction between them was so cute/funny 😂
In the beginning credits it shows that it's based on a comic book series.
And Marvel, no less 😱
I got the watch this in a drive through movie theater when I was a kid laid on top of my Moms station wagon with a blanket and pillow
Throwing in another UFO sci-fi/comedy recommendation, REPO MAN (1984) with Emilio Estevez. Feels like it influenced Quentin Tarantino’s LA films
More aliens like Independence Day 👏🛸🔥
I just love Will Smith's physical comedy! You should definitely watch the 90's series The fresh prince of BelAir! To this day still one of the most funny show, with his dancing 😆
And....
Please watch Galaxy Quest!
Men in Black 2 is amazing but I adore Men in Black 3.
