- A Stock MK8 vs a modified MK8? Which is faster? Today we race a stock MK8 Golf R vs a Modified GTI.. Manual AWD VS Manual FWD with E-diff. But which hot hatch is faster? Will the MK8 Golf R AWD Traction win out over a modified and lighter MK8 Golf GTI? Also who is faster Charles or Paul? What I really want to see is how your MK8 compares to your Stage 2+ MK7.5 on track or auto-crossing
I like it!! I really think the 8 will be faster. The issue in autox is the 7.5 has some boost lag to tend with. Maybe we need to get the R32,7.5 and 8 up there!
@@HumbleMechanic Would love to see a family brawl, no one is doing this stuff like you two! I always suspected that the harder you tune these small 2 liters, the less effective they become for "close quarters work" in other words tight auto cross. On a bigger race track and of course a drag strip, there is much more time spent on WOT. Do OTS tunes focus at all at increasing power over stock in the areas "under the curve"? I'm pretty sure JB-4 is even inactive until WOT, so not much added there to auto cross situation.
Thats the same thing I thought when I saw this video. Do I want to go full stage 2 on my 7.5 or get a new R?
@@kegfreak3728 Well no one doubts a full stage 2 or even just stage 1 mk7.5 R would maul a stock mk8 on the street and strip- they're not THAT far removed. The other differences (biggest would be the Haldex 5 vs the Magna rear end dynamics) are another story.
@@HumbleMechanic Sounds you need a third driver! I have 5 seasons of autox under my belt in my gti and don't live too far away :D Or throw my k04 MKV into the mix

6:38.... Your times were 45.925...and 46.351... and you were "only 1.478 seconds faster in the Golf R... 🤔
I'm no math professor, but something doesn't add up here.
Its only 0.3 to 0.4 seconds quicker than the gti
1 or 2 seconds on an autocross may as well be 5 years.
Facts.. Also sorry for the bad math yall... I need to sublet my math to Engineering Explained.

When I used to Auto-X till the late 2000's the fastest time of the day was always between a Mazdaspeed Miata on slicks and a prepped STi.
I dearly miss auto-xing my Corrado!
the beginner improvement was probably more due to how much a new driver can improve. You being more experienced, it will be harder for you to improve. I'd put money on it that if he drove the R first and then the gti, he probably be faster in the GTI as well

100%. I’ve been autocrossing for a decade and we’ve seen it for years.
One other common thread is for a new driver to share their car with a veteran for a couple runs and ride along. By the 2nd or 3rd run the new driver begins copy-catting the vet and picking up huge time advantages.

The mazda mx5 has a good chassis. They like the tight tracks.
In the Uk they do well at track days on somewhere like Knockhill (very short, tight and twisty)
Imagine buying a VW for 50k+ USD only to get chopped by a clapped out Miata lol.
That was great, the results weren't surprising. When traction is key (isn't it always?), you just can't beat AWD. Nicely done!

Ohhhh no! Smoked by a Miata! 😆Strength to weight. It's all about strength to weight. Which is why I was kind of rooting for the GTI (and not just because I own a MKV). Disappointed, but not surprised.
I get the comparison thing here but you guys completely omitted the most important factor; the rubber. It makes a HUGE difference in an autocross so unless you're both running identical tires, the comparison doesn't mean as much. Loved the video and as an 8V S3 owner it was really informative. I can't wait to get out there and see what mine can do on the track.
Yeah unfortunately there will always be some type of variables.
Pretty sure the GTI would be faster under better conditions.
I think the GTI could definitely benefit from some lighter wheels, maybe some neuspeeds or something.
More like Volks racing. I bought some G2s and shed close to 15lbs each corner. Made a huge difference in braking into turns (later) acceleration ( sooner).
Call me crazy but with the slight drop and wheel change I’m liking the styling of the GTI more than the R. Still think the mk7/7.5 wins this but the mk8 GTI is really growing on me.
Get the S4 out there!
Wow! Only a 7% hp lose and 3% torque loss at the wheels on the R? So VW was a bit deceptive and it really makes more like 345 crank hp and 320 crank tq give or take a few if you calculate for a 15% drivetrain loss.

Times for you guys didn’t look that bad, I don’t know if you guys were on 200tw tires, which the MazdaSpeed were. Also those bigger rims on the GTI will definitely slow it down. Usually from GS to DS my GTI is usually around half a second slower. But the Golf R definitely will reward a non experienced driver. Great seeing the R and GTI out on a course. Would be interesting to see the difference between your 7.5 R and the MK8 R

Your math was off with your times. Golf R 45.925, GTI 46.351, difference of .426. Extremely close considering the AWD and slippery conditions.

Charles will win in the R, but I'm a little biased since I have a MK 7.5 R too 😉

The GTI needs lighter wheels and I'm sure you know that tires are everything in AutoX. Definitely looks like you both had a blast out there. I absolutely love doing AutoX in my GTI. It's definitely become one of my biggest passions in the past year. 😎🙌🤘
You definitely forgot to compare tires between the two. Tire choice and pressure is HUGE for autocross. Also am I seeing things or does the R have amber brake lights?

Never underestimate a Miata at an Autocross event.. they're literally the best car you can use for one other than perhaps a Lotus Elise, Caterham Seven or Shelby Cobra.

this was actually pretty cool to watch, i really want to know how fast my 99.5 jetta tdi would do, torq app says it has 72 hp, but it does have lowering springs + koni shocks/struts. and a thick rear sway bar. so basically you can turn soooo hard with no body roll. only problem is on the highway it bounces a lot

Not surprised a miata won.. they are still big competitors in the autocross world. But the new 2019+ ND2 miata is by far smoking a lot of cars, we even have mclaren 720S losing to the new miatas at our local events, ofcourse the driver plays a part I am sure. The ND2 and the porsche GT4 are the two fighting for the top times, then next comes a 2012 ford mustang with the first gen coyote 5.0 motor.
The stance on Paul's GTI is absolute perfection! Not a Racer Boy or a Mom stance. That there is a Man's Stance!
I'm definitely an R guy but the front facia is a big let down this gen. R's never get the driving lights and the GTI has a really killer look would of preferred a more exaggerated GTI grill for the R in place of the moustache styling the have goin on. That said I'd still take the R if I was to choose from the two, AWD and rear dif are the main factors.

Did not cheat, answering before I watch. Golf R is going to be faster and I believe faster driver will be you Charles because you have more seat time in the R.

There is a guy who runs his GTI in our PCA AutoX and is usually in the top 30-40%. It's so quite it makes you think it is slow.

Nice work boys! It's been a long time since I've raced in autocross. It's such a good learning environment as it's so driver intensive. Anyway, two sweet cars you guys got!
The R has a significant advantage due to the AWD....also, got spanked by a RWD Miata by more than the difference between the two cars VW's. As always, it proves the the fastest mod is the driver upgrade.
Along those lines, serious kudos for making the point that the R is the car a beginner can jump in and drive faster. Totally valid, useful points since not many folks have dozens of hours of track time or hundreds of laps around the vindictive cones.
That miata was also properly prepped, modded for autox.. LOL but you are 100% spot on. DRIVER MOD(fwiw, his runs were also end of day where it was much drier.)
@@HumbleMechanic Mine was absolutely not knock and either of you guys. We do it all the time in our 24 Hours of Lemons cars in that there are a few known, very fast drivers that still will not kill your endurance car...we send them out for a 30 minute stint and by lap 3 or 4 they have bested our fastest time in 14 hours of racing that track.
I was indirectly trying to encourage folks to just get more track or (if that is what you are into) autocross time. If you platue, get some instruction. Vehicle mods make the car theroretically faster but driver mods make it actually faster. When I raced motorcycles the ratio all the faster riders that were still privateers used was 10:1...spend $10 on track time and instruction to every $1 in upgrades if you want to go faster.

GTI is Manual so you probably lost a bit of time-shifting gearbox.
The R is also manual here (option in US/Canada markets)
Both cars are manual. I think launch control would have had you going too fast on that first bend.

Cool to hear that these are good iterations on the platform, but my MK7 has been enough of a headache. I think after this I will probably move over to something Japanese and a bit more reliable.
