For those of you wondering, what happened to the MK4 R32 Turbo... Its at the bodyshop :( it will be a little while longer until its finished. BUT!!!! I got some non MK8 goodness coming soon. I wanted to get some basic mods done early on the MK8.. Then we have the MK3 Cabrio, MK1 TT, Tacoma and more fun things to work on .
Same as my r32, just getting hit for new discs, pads, rear springs and dampers to get it through its annual road worthy test. Holy carp are discs (rotors) are sooo expensive. Also got my mk3 vr6 off road as it’s running rich. So many cars so little time. What happened to the white mk3 you had? I could do with plenty of DIYs.
Hey Humble on Paul's holy shift install video for the mk7 he locks the transmission but in your video here you are saying not to lock it? Is this a difference in the generation? If you could clarify it would be much appreciated. Thank you!
You should do the other common manual mods as well -- clutch delay valve removal, clutch stop, and clutch assist spring removal. These simple changes along with the shifter bracket definitely improve the stock driving experience. I assume all of these are still relevant on the Mk8 since the transmission appears to be completely carry-over.
I just rebuilt my 02J shift tower for mk4 gti at school, and this helped me understand the shift tower so much better! No longer worried about adjustment😀
Thanks for the seatbelt tip ! I installed it according to instructions, but gears were a bit hard to get into. All working but not a great feel. I redid the cable adjustment with the seatbelt in place and it's perfect. Very good precise shifts !
I did it with a bungee cord connected to the door latch on the body, and I seem to have the same problem where some of the gears seem to have too much resistance. I'm wondering if it was too much tension from the bungee. I will go back in and try it with just the seat belt in the morning.
Just installed this on my Mk8 GTI. Took about two hours. I don’t want to jinx it, but everything seems to work perfect. It aligned properly, all gears are easy to access. There is a distinct *snick* sound when you shift now. Boy, sure hope that’s intended. Your video was invaluable. Couldn’t have done it without. Thank you!!
Could you explain the noise? I installed the dieselgeek sigma6 shifter on my mk8 and it sounds like something is rattling at higher rpm’s when getting into gear. It goes into each gear fine without issue. Not sure if it’s just normal considering there isn’t any rubber anymore and the excessive noise is just translating from the gearbox into the lever.
Audi A3 8P install is almost exactly the same. The holy shift performs exactly as advertised. It's pretty sweet. If it isn't quite right, loosen all the little nuts, lock the shifter down & lock the shift fork shaft, give everything a wiggle, tighten it down again like he says & it should work perfectly. It's what I did. First try didn't feel quite right -- had a hard time finding 1st & 2nd. After re-trying, it worked perfectly. It's very fun to drive.
your how-to videos are the best! The commentary is very helpful and funny, and the footage is the clearest / easiest to follow. Going to do this to my Mk7 some day
For the seatbelt "tool" to work you have to fully pull it out so the safety lock engages and youll hear/feel the belt lock clicking and it will keep tension
After pinning the shift knob inside the car, buckle the driver seatbelt, then grab the "lap belt", loop it over the shift knob, and cinch it down. The friction from the buckle slide will hold it in place.
Must have shifter upgrades for any manual VW. I couldn't be more of a VW fanboy but Ill be the first to admit we haven't had a good manual transmission in a long time. I find it odd when I see so many car journalists heralding the manual trans in recent VWs, like it is an s2000 or miata. These things have a ton of slop from the factory. Great mod
I find this strange, because in my opinion, VW shifters are excellent. That being said, I am in Europe and drive mostly small Diesels, so maybe there's a difference. I always felt that they struck a great balance between direct and forgiving. In my Seat Ibiza (basically a VW Polo) one could literally throw it into gear (as in, knock the shifter from 3rd towards neutral, let go, and ot would jump into 4th). Also, it just loved fast shifting. I also drove a lot of manual BMWs, and I found their shifters to be awful. Unprecise, sloppy, moving under engine torque, and generally not "fun". My little Suzuki Swift on the other hand has a rifle-like feel to the shifter, but it doesn't like to be bang-shifted. I guess it comes down to personal preference. Maybe the European spec is also tuned differently...
Charles, awesome video Brother!! I watched it countless times to get mine installed on my new Golf R and it made all the difference in the world. I also installed a new Raceseng weighted shift knob (Rondure) and the driving experience is an infinite times better. Much respect and appreciation Brother! Just need power mirrors now.
Heading over to DAP now! I am buying one part per paycheck then gonna have a great weekend with some friends throwing mods on our cars. Then its off to the track with my R, a Subaru, and a Challenger Super Bee
Just installed it. Way easier than I thought. Had to rip the foam under the shifter knob as well😂. Followed the video step by step. Thanks again you guys are the best.
Love the way you have to use your right hand to change gear even when sitting in the passenger seat… I have to do the same thing with my left arm when sitting in my passenger seat here in the UK… I physically cannot change gear with my right hand (even though I’m right handed) because I’m so used to using my left 😂 Trying to find a similar kit in the UK but nothing seems so well built 😢
I never really thought my shifter's throws were too long, but I do like the notchiness of the upgrade. I actually kinda like the stock knob in the R. Shame that you're replacing it. Good video, I like watching these repairs and upgrades that you do.
Ordered an APR short shifter for my MK8 R yesterday. The BFI shift knob made a huge difference, but can't wait till after the short shifter and aluminum bushings go in. Should clean things up nicely.
@@brettdiehl1965 it's a definite improvement over the stock shifter. The combination of my BFI shift knob and the APR short shifter feels great. My shop that installed it didn't set it at the most aggressive settings my understanding is it can be customized. The throw is definitely shorter than stock even though they kind of said it right in the middle. They said if I wanted to be more aggressive they can adjust it as needed.
While I appreciate the nostalgic of a manual gear box (which is what I learned to drive on) all I wanted to do while watching this fantastic how 2 vid was shout DSG lol. I nabbed my 22 DSG R 820 miles ago and shifting is lightning fast.
but is it fun tho? you need go fast to have fun, ive drove both manual and dsg Golf R and yea the dsg is faster and better on the track but the manual is just more fun without having to go fast all the time
Thank you very much for this. Whenever i get my golf r, i will be buying one! The only issue is that my golf r is now been pushed back to next model year... very sad
I would say if you stiffen up the shift linkage with a kit like this, don't put constant pressure on the shift knob while it's in gear. I have seen people do this some times while keeping their hand on the shifter. This could in theory cause premature wear inside the transaxle. Specifically the shift forks and/or syncronizer hubs. Just my two cents anyway.
I mean, that can happen either way if you leave your hand on it. My 2002 VW New Beetle owners manual says you shouldn't keep your hand on the shifter after changing gears to avoid premature wear
In the DAP vid, they lock down the shift tower with the pin before installing essentially all the new parts. Why do you recommend against this until you are locking in the cables?
Just did this with my Dieselgeek kit, kicking myself for waiting 2 years before doing it :) wish I would have known your little 13mm on the housing trick
I finally ordered one of these the other day, and i'm kicking myself bc i just replaced my battery tray the other day with a new oem one bc 2 of the intake mounts were snapped off by a shop that did my bfi mount install. I've had bushings and a universal short shifter for like 5 years, but it has a ton of side to side slop. I'm not convinced I got the adjustment 100%. I already have the dg super pin as well. When sliding the the shifter linkage into the endlinks, do they just go in all the way before tightening all of the allen heads or is there something specific with the notch you mentioned? I'm guessing it just takes a little trial and error. I'm really hoping this setup gives me fond memories of how my s2000 felt- although that transmission spoiled me rotten.
turns out the base golf 8 sold in europe (not the gti or the r, but the ones with the 1.5 tsi) has a different linkage system from the gti and the r. probably the short shifter would work anyway, but I'm not totally sure. Sure thing is that it has a lot more plastic than the one on the video and the "right" cable positioning is different.
All that's left is a BFI shift knob. I personally think the factory shift knob is a little too "square" and "clubby". Feels and looks a little out of place with the streamlined interior despite the touch buttons.

Yep. Main bracket in the spline.. super pain. Been at it for 1.5 hors and no luck. I need a slide hammer or something. My back hurts from rocking and pulling and hitting. Any ideas?
Funny because I used to drive an A3 Audi 2003 model and then I drove an E36 from my buddy and it drove and brakes were awful but I asked the owner if he had a short shift kit because it shifted so crisp and quick. Turned out k was just used to terrible VAG shifters...
So question on shopdap he locked the transmission first before taking apart the stock shifter but you wait till after you have installed the holy shifter. Does it matter?
Can confirm breaking the lock tab sucks ass. Had to pull my shift tower to properly remove my old one and I'm unable to reinstall a new one so the hole it goes in is just plugged with a rubber plug to keep the trans from leaking fluid
Thank you for the instruction on the DIY short shifter, going to order it now! But I have a question, I have a 2013 VW Jetta GLI Autobahn and I am getting code P0491 do you have a DIY for that fix? I haven’t been able to find it. Thank you
@@HumbleMechanic I'll look into that. Appreciate your time answering. Your past vids when you had your Passat on helped me keep this Sleeper on the road. So, thank you.
I just bought and tried to install the Holy Shift into my 2009 GTI. Install was a pain in the butt. After I did the initial adjustments to the shifter by locking the tower and dropping the pin into the shifter and tightening up the 14 4mm Allen’s, I lost second gear. I pinned everything again and loosened everything again like you suggested in your video. I only tightened two of the 4mm bolts on each arm and tried it all again. Still no second gear. It appears that it is hitting something that is preventing it from going into gear. All of the other gears work fine, finding reverse is a bit different. Any thoughts or advice is greatly appreciated!!

I have a issue with my Mk7 with 100,000 miles. A misfire on cylinder 3 only, misfire is only on idle. Did compression test 190 on 1,2,4 and 160 on 3. Changed spark plugs, coils, injectors, and did a carb clean. Any help on what it could be the issue would be appreciate it.

The chicken nuggets 🤣
Freakin hilarious
What can be done with longitudinal engines? For example the Passat B5 or the A4 B5.
Good instruction
I have an 01 beetle with a 6 speed from an 05, im missing the lock on the transmission, any tips on keeping it locked without it?
Hey, don't mess with the Aircooled-Guys 🙂
Good video though......as always.
Hahah nothing but love.
Can confirm breaking the lock tab sucks ass. Had to pull my shift tower to properly remove my old one and I'm unable to reinstall a new one so the hole it goes in is just plugged with a rubber plug to keep the trans from leaking fluid
Good work
Very helpful
The Best for Last kkk, comparison with dsg
Thank you for the instruction on the DIY short shifter, going to order it now! But I have a question, I have a 2013 VW Jetta GLI Autobahn and I am getting code P0491 do you have a DIY for that fix? I haven’t been able to find it.
Thank you
Any suggestions on a kit or Replacement kit to sharpen up my 2004 Passat GL 1.8T Wagons 5-Speed shifter...?
That I’m not sure. Might be worth looking for a 1.8t A4 upgrade. Back then they were basically the same car
@@HumbleMechanic I'll look into that. Appreciate your time answering. Your past vids when you had your Passat on helped me keep this Sleeper on the road. So, thank you.
Shifter has bad side to side movement, would a super pin help?
Last car was a Civic Si 10th Gen and can confirm VW manuals are much more loose feeling lol
Is the adjustment pin all the way out?
@@HumbleMechanic it sure is
@@HumbleMechanic any other thoughts?
Is there anything you can visually see blocking it?
@@HumbleMechanic nope it all looks like it does in the video. It’s really got me scratching my brain. I took the whole thing off and re-installed it step by step and still same
where’s you get the black steering wheel decal?? I hate the silver on my wheel
It’s all stock
@@HumbleMechanic bro go to sleep it’s 2am 😭
Damn, I need this on my 8V
I have a issue with my Mk7 with 100,000 miles.
A misfire on cylinder 3 only, misfire is only on idle.
Did compression test 190 on 1,2,4 and 160 on 3. Changed spark plugs, coils, injectors, and did a carb clean.
Any help on what it could be the issue would be appreciate it.
Do you have any info on a mk3 vr6 shift kit?because looks they’re no longer available.
You might need that enhanced battery restraint if you ever launch your Golf into space Tesla-style.
Hi Charles, how would you do that on a MK4 Jetta, i am in SA my jetta is a 2003 1.6 akl with a duu gearbox, my shifting set up is completely different to the GTI/GLI (a whole lot of linkages).Any advise on how to install short shifter on that set up?
is this identical to GOLF 7 TSI 5 speed? or at least very similar?
99% the same
Are u going to upgrade to a Cold Air intake? I’ve got a MK7.5 golf R and after watching your video for that it doesn’t seem worth it if I’m only going stage 1. Thoughts? As always a great video. Although I’m shocked you’ve already broken 2 things on the car. Lol
If you want more turbo sounds yes. Noise is the main difference. The stock intake is very muffled which could be good or bad depending on your expectations.
