Installing air bags on this kind of car doesn't feel right. Maybe if it was an OEM system.... But with the chrome tank and compressor inside the car feels cringe.
My MK7R is on AirLift 3P. Everything is hidden in the spare tire well. This is my first car on air and it’s better than any coilover car I’ve ever had. My R has DCC and it’s better than that. Like rails through corners and I can get it on a lift easy. I’m not sure I could go back.
Absolutely adore the fact these episodes are a proper length and not just 3x 15 minute episodes of trying to fit some brackets. Quantity and quality - a rare TH-cam combo.
I love this episode!! @JohnLudwick , what a great job. There is something about forcing Charles to (in his eyes) make bad decisions on his builds that is just so funny and great to watch! Reminds me of the Passat Nos days
Commenting mostly for the algorithm since this series deserves a million views -- not just for the swap and mods, but for your showing us the thought process of solving problems such as welding together a radiator mount, splicing together an exhaust, wheel spacing, sifting through a hojillion parts catalog to find a shifter that works, etc, etc. Truly epic work!
I stopped modding my gti after doing an IS38 with e48 map, new springs, bilsteins, rsb, poly bushings, bigger intercooler and uprated clutch. I was glad to be done. Watching Charles makes me want to start again. Take all my money
Air ride seems to be counter to the overall ethos of an RS3 swapped Golf R imo, especially a setup that low to start and that only goes lower from there. Would much rather have seen this on some nicely dialed in coils and I suspect Charles does too lol. Excited to see the car at wookies and hear a more complete verdict overall lol
@@HumbleMechanic There's a couple reasons why they won't compared to a dialed in static coilover of equal quality, but you're having fun with it, all good.
I think im in agreement with charles. Coilovers and would be done in a short time. No running lines, no buzzing compressor, no trunk space compromised. Im not an airride hater, those cars look cool and all and the adjustable aspect is cool too but i think this choice is outside charles usual MO
I would like to see more of the “issues” and “research” and “struggles” and plastic welding. A 10 hr video version of the nitty gritty stuff but all in all I love this serious 👍
As a non-mechanic car lover, this whole process is simply amazing. The amount of work and detail achieved in a relatively short amount of time is astounding to me. Great work guys! You should be proud.
Charles, your video series on this Swap is truly exceptional. I'm genuinely hoping that each episode, despite its considerable duration, doesn't end too quickly. Your work is truly commendable !
I appreciate you giving the air ride a chance. I think they can be ran tastefully without slamming the car to the ground. With your setup, it seems like the highest setting is quite a bit lower than I'd be comfortable with. I have bags that I've been holding on to for well over two years now and in that time I also purchased and installed two sets of BC Racing coilovers (newest set is DS Series). I still don't know if I'll ever run the bags on my car, but I appreciate your video giving me a clearer picture of the process. Thanks for this series!
I don't care too much about the ride height, but I'm just really curious if a Golf on air bags can handle like a normal Golf R on steel suspension or something a bit stiffer like a Mk7 GTI Clubsport S or so on? Conventional steel springs and steel rollbars do ofter a certainly predictability. You don't tend to see air suspension as OEM on sport compacts (not so much even on the A45s, C63s, M2s & M3s? only on the E63s and M5s and above I think?), you don't even tend to see hydraulic suspension on sport compacts anymore -- not since the days of the MG TF and Citroen BX 16-valve.
I know the frustrations of major engine mods and air bag installation. It blows my mind you are doing them AT THE SAME TIME! I was LOL at all Charles’ airbag comments in this video!
When everything works first try, youre doing an awesome job. I was especially impressed by the engine wiring in the last video. Perfect research, execution and even finish. Youre a real pro💪💪💪

I bagged (bagriders kit) my mk1 225Q TT back in 2016. Always had coilovers on all my mk3 gtis/jettas/cabrios. I worked on the bag install after work each night for 5 days as I had never done it before (it was my project/weekend car) and to be honest - I loved it. It rode great. Wasn’t bouncy, and felt like a mid range set of B&Gs. 1:16 Is the only reason you needed the lower portion of the RS3 core support because of the intercooler mounting points? Or were there other factors? Hmm, if you used the Golf R Upgraded Intercooler from Unitronic instead would you have still needed to swap out the impact bar and splice in the lower portion of the RS3 core support or would you have been able to leave everything else stock? It is a bit thinner in thickness coming in at 2" instead of 3.54" and a bit shorter from side to side coming in at 23.5" instead of 24" but it's taller by 6.3" so I'd imagine the air would cool faster because of the extra height. The only downside I see to the Unitronic Golf R intercooler is that there will be turbulent air flow when both entering and exiting the intercooler due to how the inlet and outlet sections are designed, almost like the air will be hitting a wall instead of swooping into the intercooler which will provide a more laminar air flow like the RS3 intercooler does. - Sorry for the long post lol
@@HumbleMechanic Ahhh I gotcha, looking back at it I see the arrangement is different between the two. Intercooler in the front compared to behind the condenser sounds better anyway. You guys built a great hatch, loving the OEM++ vibes with this one. The Golf RS, the way it should've been made‼️ Side note - you guys answered back pretty fast and given how big the channel is I wasn't expecting it let alone a response at all. Amazing effort guys: so do 18" wheels safely fit over the 370mm front rotors with calipers? Would this alone be a practical, simple upgrade for Golf R owners who want larger front rotors? Or are adjustments needed for the brake fluid cylinder, etc.? Great work so far, fascinating to watch what you all are doing.
I think you'll like air ride after a few drives and tweaks to the settings. I've put it on a multiple number of cars including a Porsche 986 Boxster and Mini Cooper JCW. Handling is improved and you don't have to sacrifice comfort for performance. Although I'm a big fan of nice coilovers like Fortune Auto or RS*R, air ride can still be great. Although I do have an issue with Air Rid Performances cheaping out on some bearings lately. A lot of people were having strut hat bearing failures (my self included) in under 10K miles. So that being said, I'm kind of done with ARP struts. But their air management is still pretty solid. Much better than the original "auto pilot" systems they had in the early 2000's that would randomly dump air as you drive. sketchy stuff.
I'm not a fan of 90% of these mods, but for some reason I can't stop watching. I guess modifying VWs isn't my thing at all, but it's interesting to watch Charles work and make everything look like it's supposed to be that way. There's a lot of talent in that, as most modified cars look modified rather than purposeful. Watching the body kit go on next week is going to be utterly painful though. I'm probably going to start calling this the Frankenstein's Monster R at some point. 🤣

Loving this build. Forgive me if I’m wrong but with such an amazing engine swap (my fav vag engine) this is going to be a beast. Picking bags was it really a good idea will u have the handling to match the performance like u would on coilovers? I’m also a mechanic but don’t have a lot of knowledge on bags so could be way off. Always thought they were more show than handling. I know u will track day this car which is why I’m curious.
@@HumbleMechanic fair enough. Let’s see how it goes. Iv heard air has come on a lot over the years. Look forward to your thoughts on it after some time.
Love this build, but not a fan of the air suspension. Honestly, I’m not even a huge fan of air suspension even in OEM fitment. Especially in sporty cars. Just doesn’t have that linear feel. Also, changing your height changes your spring rate. But it’s your car and I hope you love it.
Charles you're a bad influence 😂. I have an MK1 Golf with an Audi 3.2 24v which sounds beautiful but the RS3 😮 ❤. I'm skeptical about air ride and will be avidly watching to gauge your opinion on it. Keep up the great work 👍🏼

I know u will track day this car which is why I’m curious.
The air was 2 things 1 education for me. I’ve crapped on air for years with minimum experience.
2 the thing I mention at the very end
@@HumbleMechanic fair enough. Let’s see how it goes. Iv heard air has come on a lot over the years. Look forward to your thoughts on it after some time.
Love this build, but not a fan of the air suspension. Honestly, I’m not even a huge fan of air suspension even in OEM fitment. Especially in sporty cars. Just doesn’t have that linear feel. Also, changing your height changes your spring rate. But it’s your car and I hope you love it.
Best amd most entertaining build by far.. 😅😅😅😅 I love it guys
..
Brilliant, really love seeing you do this sort of stuff, giving me ideas as what to do to my TTS.
Loving this series! The r is gonna be amazing when it’s all complete
Been waiting for this episode
Crazy build my dude. I'm with you on the air suspension skepticism 🤣
Charles you're a bad influence 😂. I have an MK1 Golf with an Audi 3.2 24v which sounds beautiful but the RS3 😮 ❤. I'm skeptical about air ride and will be avidly watching to gauge your opinion on it. Keep up the great work 👍🏼
I feel conflicted, I love this project and the level of engineering going into it. But personally I can't stand the look of that air ride.
@HumbleMechanic love the build and journey, can't wait to see the finished product. I don't recall seeing it or you mentioning it, but have you swapped the brake master cylinder?
This video just got me more hyped for this car season. Can't wait to see the car done!
Definitely need some 215/35/18 tyres for those wheels 😂
This is the most entertaining car show on the internet
Awesome channel, Happy Easter 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🇬🇧
