huh! I honestly didn't fully know that, though it would make sense I should get back to reading them at some point, but the horus heresy has gripped me a bit too tightly
Of note is the fact that the Raven guard version of the Death Eagles uses the same colours as the Death Spectres, which is another successor of the Raven Guard. They're identical minus Chapter badges
Fun fact: the FW author who invented the Red Scorpions has said on social media that the chapter are loyalist Emperor's Children successors. Explains the paranoia about geneseed purity as they are worried about the Blight.
I think GW likes to mix it while doing their best to leave doors open. They like to fix loopholes in the lore, while allowing room to reverse corse if a good idea materializes.
7:11 Actually, Cawl DOES have unlimited access to uncorrupted Emperors Children geneseed without needing to extract it from other Space Marines. The Sangprimus Portum has the original genetic samples from all 20 Primarchs, including the Traitors AND the Lost two ones.
"interpretation vs regurgitation" Oh bless you. When you started there was close to two dozen other loretubers popping out of the woodwork, seemingly chasing algorithm trends. I only subscribed to you and _Chrono the Harlequin_ from that time because you both gave a shit rather than read the wiki in that drama student way. Thank you for contributing rather than repackaging.
Most likely the Death Eagles were those Emperor's Children loyalist that they and other loyalist from the Traitor gene-lines were made to be integrated with other Loyal Legions Successor Chapters. Though need to always say the Sons of the Phoenix are from Dorn's line. This isn't GW trying to play chess with hidden meanings as they weren't the ones who made them, it was a fan for a contest.
My theory is that they changed their colors and adopted the title of Raven Guard successors in an attempt to hide their origins from the scrutiny of other Imperial factions. The story that the original blackshields died out could even have been made up as part of their cover story.
Loyalist primaris successors from traitor legions goes so hard. But one can imagine, would they fight more violently than usual against their corrupted primogeniters?
Nice to think they were emps children first but to bolster ranks took reinforcements from the ravens and with time they just got slowly saturated by Ravens and are no longer emps children
Fun video and its definitely something to think about. Great job, Arthur. Also seeing your excitement about the Red Talons, are you aware that the Red Talons, Iron Lords, Raptors, and a few other successor chapters are getting short stories in the form of ebooks this week or if you do know about, are thinking about getting them?
This is why I love your channel. 40k lore is mutable and unreliable by design, so this kind of "conspiracy theory" lore exploration fits perfectly into how GW created the setting. It's also vastly overlooked by many creators on 40k-tube. Love it!
This has become my favorite lore channel because you go further into the analysis than the surface level content you can get on the platform. I appreciate the work you do and what you make
I honestly cannot stand how there's no actual successors of Loyalist remnants of traitor legions. Like there are hints but those hints just slowly getting washed away for no good reason.
I want there to be some big reveal in which a good bit of successor chapters turn out to be Alpha Legion successors and all the marines around them are worried but the successor chapters are like "yeah, fuck that. Emperor over hydra."
The funny thing is, that might be the canonical explanation for the change in livery! if you look in the Liber Hereticus, the Emperor's Children heraldry pages note that the secondary white elements in their heraldry were associated with Terran veterans and thus were retained by the loyalists, and that black became a more common secondary colour for the legion as a whole as the heresy progressed and the legion's access to the specific purple pigment they used degraded. Keeping those facts in mind, seeing how the Death Eagles went from their prior heraldry (which they apparently kept if Lexicanum is accurate but I don't have the source to hand) to the 'modern' one makes perfect sense - take an Emperor's Children marine in purple-and-white armour and replace all the purple with black (and being separated from the legion proper they'd have even less access to that precious purple pigment) and you have a Death Eagle. It's entirely possible that after the heresy they claimed Corax as their primarch rather than being literal Raven Guard successors, if anyone asked (the link to the RG is only alleged, apparently - unfortunately the page cited by Lexicanum from Imperial Armour Vol. 8 are omitted from the Warhammer Vault version so I can't confirm that) or they just never actually claimed a known predecessor and some scribe at some point saw black-and-white armour + bird theme and just assumed. The Death Eagles Chapter allegedly first appeared in M32 helping crush a massive cultist uprising in Segmentum Solar (in fact their precise founding is only an estimate, going by Imperial Armour 13), and only the second and third founding had occurred at that point. Indeed that debut saw them appearing alongside the Minotaurs and Carchadons (both of questionable heritage and the the latter a Chapter that had been isolated from the Imperium as a whole since the heresy) it's entirely possible that they were quietly integrated into a later founding to explain their origin, which would perhaps explain conflicting records if they were, say, 'officially' founded during a later founding (since only the 2nd and third predate this appearance, and if the Raven Guard ties are deliberate obfuscation than backdating them to those earlier foundings would obviously raise questions gvien how few successors the 19th Legion could muster). I figure they went into the void at the end of the heresy and quietly reintegrated, possibly with deliberate collusion of some of the powers that be in the Imperium (and given they helped save segmentum Solar it's very possible they had friends in high places as a result, not to mention a clear demonstration of loyalty to the throne).
While I personally find the Alpha Legion gimmick to be exhausting and tedious, their color scheme and snake scale motif makes for the best looking armor in the whole shebang.
Worth noting; the original chapter badge for the Death Eagles during their magenta/white/gold phase was the Aquila. The Palatine Aquila (Slightly different shape from the normal Aquila) was originally something that only the Emperor's Children could wear as a badge of honour from the Emperor himself. It would make perfect sense for a group that breaks away from the Emperor's Children to keep the iconography that ties them to the Emperor while removing the iconography that links them to their original legion.
I love these guys. Have a squad of old style marines painted like them (the new style can’t paint the old style) that I always like to imagine are just emporers children but shittily say death eagle related words instead of emporers children’s words
Love your videos! Been a while since I first watched this but this inspired me so much I’m actually making my own death eagles army (OG colors of course).
Unironically, I was very happy to see that both the Raven Guard and Emperor's Children have the Death Eagles as a paint scheme in Unification mod for DoW:SS
I like the flavour of black shield traitor Legions gene seed being "smuggled" back into the Astartes ranks, and just claiming a different father Primarch. I think it makes sense that Rainbow Warriors have Thousand Sons gene seed but "claim" they are an Ultramarines successor
I didn't know there was Death Eagles because we have Doom Eagles but I remember naming is just what ever two words they want to use without checking if another chapter had a similar name
as someone that has stumbled into making an homobrew chapter descending from loyalist Emperor's Children my guess is that after the Heresy they got integrated into the Raven Guard and then spun off into their own successor chapter
I like your ideas funny youtube man. This one is a bit messy but given the timeframe and number of factions involved, honestly? I think some messiness and uncertainty works in the setting's favor as opposed to having everything be neat and canon. Man, that first paint scheme is very much of it's time, though. Still goes hard as fuck.
According to the Lexicnum, the Blackshield Death Eagles' fate was unknown; my theory is that the pink and white Death Eagles are that original warband newly reorganized as a relatively codex compliant chapter post heresy. I'd like to think that the Death Eagles did not care about their heritage at first, hence the Rouge Trader colors, and made it no secret amongst other Imperial forces; however, not all elements of the Imperium could tolerate this. I imagine that at some point, they were attacked by either a fellow chapter of loyalists or an Imperial taskforce, and nearly driven extinct. If they still remained loyal after this, logically, they would probably make the decision to repaint their colors and pass themselves off as Raven Guard. I think that they still might use their old colors, however, for private ceremonial purposes.
As someone who adores the look of pink/purple armor but hasn't accepted slaanesh enough for their minis to get all freaky and truly EC, the few suspected EC-adjacent chapters are really interesting to me. Knowing nothing besides this video and a bit of their wiki, I have a bit of a head-canon for their black and silver armor. First I was really mad to see it, because these guys are drab and generic and look nothing like the EC, Flawless Host, or Sons of Phoenix. But then I realized, if they really do come from stubborn loyalist EC, then forsaking their beautiful, garish armor and replacing it with boring black could be seen as a powerful symbol for them renouncing what the Third was becoming. To add to that, you also have Death Eagle, which lets them fit into Raven Guard sure but also wasn't it Fulgrim's symbol or nickname too? More Like Death (to the ) Eagles.
While it's a definetly interesting theory and it'd be cool of GW made some nods to it. I do believe sometimes totally mundane answers fit here too. They could have simply just changed their colours for one reason or another. It's not easy but Space marines can easily change. Dark angels for example have changed their ascetics alot over the years. The deathwing, I believe, changed two times. After the heresy and then later due to something ezekiel did turning the deathwing to bone white. And the chapter generally went from maroon cloaks to bone white if you weren't in the deathwing. With the deathwing using green cloaks. I might be wrong on some of that but my point is that chapters are entirely capable of change. Like I said, very fun theory and makes things interesting but mundane 'they just changed' can also answer this.
Mr Bones, do you think you will cover some fan made Primarchs? I think could be something fun. I have a couple of suggestions on where to start. Icarion Anasem, is a fairly popular home brew Primarch. A fair amount of his lore can be found on DeviantArt of all places and Tlatia the Radiant, whose lore can be mainly found on The Bolter and Chainsword website. Just something I think would be interesting.
I think the Sons of the Phoenix name and coloration is just a red herring. I doubt Cawl would be stupid enough to make an entirely new chapter from traitor geneseed and then claim it was from another chapter which has tons of successors it could be easily tested against.
I always imagin/theories the loyalist emperor children Maybe saved a raven guard group at one point and inspired them to take there name as the raven guard group never knew what happend to them
and for the last time the minators are the thunder warriors at lest 1 is chapter master if not a few there has been meny hints to this think about it thay would no who would hide them what thay are to big e the lords would do it and in that one book the thunder warrior gets the cure thats what that was
Please read The Returned By James Swallow. A border Prince has made a youtube video about it Also in this book they are a Utra marine successor chapter.
Going to disagree with the Death Eagle gene seed part. From my understanding of the lore Terra (and for sure Titan) has maintained stock of ALL legion gene seed. Crawl was forbidden from using the traitor ones by Bobby G, but Crawl argues that there is no inherent evil in their stocks, just that they turned against the Emperor because their Primarch’s. He argues using their stock would reduce stress on loyal legions stretching thin due to 10,000 years of carrying the Empire. I do think the Death Eagles were Emperors Children, and you alluded to the whole ‘not all Ultramarine successors are the same color’. I think they just let loyalists come into the Imperium after the civil war and just gave them rebrands after realizing a lot of people had (justified) bad blood with traitor lineage marines. Plus there are surviving ‘chimeric’ chapters out there so crossing gene lines isn’t totally out of the picture either. Good video tho bone man. Spoilers for books and conspiracy theories below. . . . . Spoilers for End and The Death III . . . . . . . . Fo created the Terminus weapon (HEAVILY IMPLIED TO BE THE GREY KNIGHT TERMINUS DECREE) during the end of the siege of Terra, it is a biological weapon designed to target ‘traitor’ Marine gene lines using gene stock from the Terran vault of the big E himself and notes from Malcador. (Personal theory of mine follows) I think the Custodes or Loyalists realized Fo was going to try and kill every space marine/Primarch (Also implied plus Fo hated ALL marines/primarchs/custodes a LOT), so it is a last resort weapon now, if for some reason humanity needed rid of all of them, they’d release it and destroy all the marines. Or they don’t really know who it would target so they left it on Titan with the Grey Knights, the decree would from the Big E saying something like “if you really have to use this understand you may deliver humanity but you’d risk taking ALL marines/primarchs out, use wisely”. Edited to add on about chimeric gene pattern marines and the whole ‘why are the ultramarines such a big legion’.
Man this is the only video where you didn’t follow a script. Super jumbled, interesting listen still. Don’t lower the quality to just crank out videos!
