  • Join US on the eat like a parisian diet challenge where we attempt to eat like a french woman and her typical french diet to get healthier and lose a bit of weight! We wanted to explore all the questions about why French people are so slim, what is the typical french diet and why french women don't get fat with so little excercise and so many amazingly good pasteries? ugh, lucky ladies!
You can find our first video explaining the Parisian diet challenge on Rosie’s channel (bit.ly/2UnQrf8) along with our 1-month check in video to dish if the diet actually worked! (bit.ly/2H0be5D) sneak peak: the french diet worked!
This video is all about the diet STRUGGLES! It’s so hard to stay motivated when you diet and we want to be honest about the diet struggles that came along with eating like a frenchwoman. We saw great results too and want to share all our tips for the French diet and what we will do differently for the next two months!

I agree. It seems like in the US we have to be so all or nothing and all the yo yo-ing eventually messes up our hormones and can make losing weight impossible. It’s like we don’t want to accept more reasonable solutions because they don’t give drastic results. But it’s funny because I’ve tried so many different things over the past 10 years and if I had just done this from the beginning I would have been so much more healthy this whole time. And a lot happier mentally!

Good for you both! So right about 21 days to establish a new habit! I am a psychologist...retired academic. I injured my ankle (pulled tendons loose tore ligaments...it was a mess that put me in a cast) doing squats at 60 yrs of age (too much weight on the bar after taking too long off). After that I could not walk for a long time so packed on some lbs. THen my mother was ill and I found from her dr. she was having ministrokes in part from not eating ENOUGH for too many years. She was severely malnourished so I had her live with my husband and I and weny on a kick to try to get her to EAT. The Dr said any way that works will help her, so we hit on ice cream because she had loved it as a child.WEll, long story short, I was the one who put on weight...not her! After she passed away I cut out the ice creams etc and walked, but found my knees were killing me...uh-oh...osteoarthritis had kicked in in my 60's.. WEll, pain is a great motivator. I knew I HAD to get the weight off.
Goala- Get off diet sodas. Check.Eat smaller portions, check. Reduce portion size again, check... 10 lbs off. Now I could start walking again the knees were better. Bought a treadmill walked first 20 min an evening while watching something I liked to distract my mind...too boring otherwise. Slowly in small increments each week upped the length of time and the speed...slooooowly. After a year I had lost another 20 lbs. I wanted to lose at least 10 more...I was shooting for a healthy for my height and bone structure weight, NOT fashion model thin as my mother had done and wrecked her health form lifetime of being too thin.
This extra 10 lbs was harder to lose. I finally got my portions down once again and over 6 mos it too came off. I have been within 5 lbs of that weight for more than two years now. I changed ALL those eating and drinking and movement habits, but I did it in stages. My great motivators were twofold: one get out of pain and second get to a target healthy level (NOT too thin) and Stay there. I did not try to see how skinny I could get. I just set a long term goal and met it. Holidays I do eat a few sweets more so I get right back to eating the way I should...I know how difficult getting 10 lbs off would be THAT is my big motivator now...3 to 5 lbs to get off is manageable for me. I never indulge in catastrophic thinking eg oh well I lost my target so I may as well KEEP on indulging....that was key for me.
Good luck with transforming your lifestyles into a healthy life, each of you and please DO remember to not get TOO thin...I don't know if one can be too rich but I DO know from observing my sweet mother than one CAN be too thin and over time destroy their health just the same as being way overweight for too long will do too.

I'm an American living in Germany with my German-Hungarian husband! We actually do a lot of the things you mentioned. Once a week we do a "monster shop" for everything we need so it's less tempting to eat out. (Now in the time of Covid, it's even less tempting!) Since we're both home more now, we each have a water bottle that we constantly fill up to make sure we stay hydrated. We eat a lot of soups, which is a great way to get in vegetables that might be a little "boring" on their own. (Hello root veggies, carrots, cabbage!) And we tend to make bigger portions so we have delicious food for the next few days, which we incorporate into cold cut nights, soup nights, pasta nights, etc.

Love this “diet plan”! I love to cook so was just not willing to commit to any extreme plan which cut our food groups or was super restrictive. One thing that has helped me was not only to menu plan for a week, but also have a catagory for dinner everyday to narrow down a bit..ie fish Monday’s, poultry Tuesday, midweek veggie meal, thurs another lean protein or fish, and then Friday enjoy a bit more red meat for the weekend :)

To manage water income and snacking, you could tell yourself each time you wanna snack you drink a glass of water! that what my parents always told me x) you'll end up not snacking and drinking way more water. Me too. I have the problem on snacking and the portion size. Most of the time, I eat snacks not because I am hungry, rather I'm quite full. Still, I have difficulties to resist the snacks whenever I see them or even think of it. I should have done a better job to discipline myself but I always fail miserably.

    • @UnintentionallyFrenchified
      @UnintentionallyFrenchified  5 ปีที่แล้ว

It's so hard Jenny! I've found for the no snacking that having a healthy option on hand always, is the best option. It's ok to snack on a piece of fruit or some nuts or an occassional pick me up, but i hate when i know i'm snacking out of boredom or habit rather than a real need. It's such a bad habit and so hard to change!

What a terrific video! Thanks very much for sharing the "back story" of your challenge. I'd watched the two prior videos and was already inspired: for example, yesterday I was to meet a friend for church at St. Etienne du Mont, and instead of taking the 63 bus as I normally would, I checked out the time necessary to walk (thanks, Google Maps!), and it was only 32 minutes. So I walked there instead, which felt great (and Google Maps was spot-on about the timing).
Even though I was tired after lunch and did take the bus home, I deliberately got off at the "wrong" stop, and by the end of the day I had over 15,000 steps, which is RARE for me, and I share the credit with you!
That's one thing: I wonder why you guys never mention using a FitBit or the like? (I know that iPhones have a "step" app, but the FitBit tracks sleep rhythms, too, which is quite revelatory as well.) Merci encore -- I'll load the youate.com app now.

But in my previous job, everyone packed a lunch or ate out! In France you get restaurant vouchers if you don’t have a work restaurant that helps keep the price of lunch cheaper. Unintentionally Frenchified they’re also vegan and even within Veganism they really restrict their diet and it’s super low in fat. They pretty much exclusively eat starch. I used to think dairy was the cause of my acne and I went vegan but then the acne came back. For me, it ended up being a variety of lifestyle things like stress, if I was about to get my period, eating too much sugar, and eating low quality dairy, stress, processed food, etc. Eating high quality dairy doesn’t do anything negative to my skin at all. Same with replacing oil. It wasn’t all oil that would aggravate my skin. It was products containing canola oil, soybean oil, safflower oil, etc. When I started only doing coconut oil, avocado oil, and food quality olive oil in addition to animal fat sources for cooking food, then I was fine. Anyway, nothing works for everyone but I’m just putting in my two cents.

Schneeflocke 103 it’s so bizarre I don’t ever get thirsty unless it’s hot. I don’t even crave water after a workout so I really have to condition myself!

I cook all my meals and i drink only tea without sugar. If you are lazy or not a good cook, you can cook reciepes made for oven. 5 minutes of choping vegetables and meat and you're done.

Ladies, I think you're trying to approach French habits with American attitudes. First of all, American food has additives. You've heard of the term hangry? Those spikes of hunger that you can't control? That's what the additives do. They prevent you from caring as much about how the food tastes as just getting something in your stomach. Cut out all additives completely and Watch What Happens.
Second, olives are loaded with vitamin A. They're really good for you. Even if you managed to make a whole meal of them? So what? You'll make up for it the next day. If you're not consuming additives? The next day you just won't be very hungry.
I have learned to stop judging myself on what I eat and concentrate more on how it makes me fee. For instance I had a piece of cake yesterday that was from a grocery store bakery. I know better. But it was purchased for my birthday. The next morning I woke up with a raging headache. Cake is going in the garbage. Will I eat cake again? Absolutely! Only from a good bakery or what I make myself. It makes all the difference.
I discovered here at home that if we have a dessert? When everybody sits down to eat, I say leave room for dessert, like my parents used to. It was a special thing. It causes you to control portions because you want to have the dessert. Overall you end up eating a lot less. Dessert is a good thing. It tells your body you're done eating. Usually small but very tasty. Even my son said, I hate eating too much, because then I can't have dessert.
the French eat way more fat than we do, even the Americanized French diet is lower in fat than the French diet. They've been trying to emulate us. That's a shame because now they're going to have to diet. I would suggest you eat what you want, high-fat, no snacking, that's a biggie. And really enjoy your food. Focus on the taste. I noticed that meals, if I ask, about textures or make comments, everybody automatically slows down, which is the main thing. It's not how much is on your plate. It's how much of it did you actually taste?

I am irritated by the fact that you say Parisian for all things French. I got it, telling people that you are a Parisian may be more glamourus, but Paris is a melting pot of French stuff. Please, i beg you to say French instead of Parisian.
