STEREOTYPES OF EMILY IN PARIS
We all know the regular French stereotypes and French Culture Shocks. The French love wine and cheese, they can be pretty darn rude and dating the French is like something out of a romantic film right? Well sometimes we get it wrong, and Netflix’s new show Emily in Paris touches on a lot of French culture, French stereotypes and culture shocks that are just so exaggerated they don’t become true anymore!
I felt like it was my duty to debunk so of the most common myths about France the French mindset and the French attitude that Emily in Paris just got completely wrong. About language: ANYTIME you would consider living abroad, that’s more than just being a tourist. You need to speak the language if you expect to be able to work and integrate.
One thing I felt they’re skipping over in all the reviews, is the premise that she literally found out within a couple days that she was moving to Paris, (yeah, also totally real life LOL) so no matter how smart anyone is, you can’t learn French in 24 hours on the plane over.
@@cindland true but it would have been better if by the end of the show she'd learnt to speak at least conversational French. But she starts off the show with no French and ends the show with no French. That's not even realistically possible.

1DarkBlossom I feel like it’s a lot of jumping on the band wagon to tear it down. I thought it portrayed a very glossed over side of business life. EG, she’d never be able to do all that social marketing without an approval from a higher up. She seems to suddenly be an employee of this new firm, when actually she was sent by the corporate arm back home. It’s all muddy. She’s a 20 something kid and doesn’t have a boatload of experience. The same thing went on in S&C. It’s all fantasy. But we don’t watch those shows for the REALITY, right??? This is very far from real life just as S&C and FRIENDS was very far from real life in NYC but they never got such a huge critical analysis. All the bed hopping in a time when aids and major STDs awareness was at its height. With not a mention of any of it. Also no mention of midtown traffic congestion, how they all got to each other’s places in the blink of an eye and so on. But that was a BIG issue in the critiques of Emily. I think Comme Une Française did the best review. Check out her channel.
The high heels were THE thing that got to me above all. No one would walk around Paris (or any other city) in shoes like that without seriously injuring their feet.

For me it was the floor thing. I have a friend who can run in stilettos at night in Rome after a few drinks, I know it can happen (I wouldn't expect Emily to be trained in that, though), but that Emily would keep trying to open the wrong door and even complain "why does this keep happening to me???" and still not remember that she's on the wrong floor... How stupid must you be? Come on, it's a different system, it doesnt start from 1 but from Ground. It's the same in Italy, Spain, UK... Really so hard?
Conserning "french people are more okay with infidelity" I don't think we are actually, we acknowledge that it exists but it's not like we forgive easily infidelity. Most of the divorce today are caused by infidelity.
Maybe she meant that you forgive them easier after the divorce or breakup.

Some people forgive, some don't and some people without forgiving continue to talk to their ex's even if they have cheated because you're friend and that don't really matter if you're not in a relationship anymore. We're not force to be OK with everything that our friend do and real friendship can be pretty hard to build for franch people so we take care of them I suppose.
But the most important part I think is that "You're not force to be OK with anything, you can talk about it but you can't make the job for them"

Hi, I'm French and I liked the show because it's a nice comedy serie but I was shocked by all the stereotypes in it !!! It's nice to hear an american who lived in Paris talking about it because a lot of French people reacted to this show but not a lot of expat did. I really appreciated your video. :) Thanks for setting the record straight !
I really think the argument that some people use of "it's just a show" to excuse the lack of effort and research that went into this mess is just so problematic. You can have "just a show" that's entertaining and fun and a nice escape from real life that isn't also wildly inaccurate, consistently disparages and misrepresents people from another culture and is so centered around the superiority of US American values it's sickening. This is why people not from the US have such a negative opinion of Americans, it's the complete lack of effort to even *try* to understand cultures that aren't their own. I'm not trying to harp on anyone as an individual, but constantly being presented with this attitude from US americans towards non-americans is frustrating and tiresome.
i wouldn't call it a lack of effort and research. It was never meant to be realistic
ModernGurlz did a video essay on Emily in Paris that is really good. You should check it out. Her biggest issue with the series is that Emily doesn't grow. At all. She gets away with anything. Everyone so easily forgives and forgets. And she doesn't change at all from episode 1. It's totally missing how much moving to a new country changes you. It's not about realistic representation but why would I follow a character who is exactly the same as the start of the series? As if none of her experiences influence her character and behaviour whatsoever.

My theory is that over the next seasons, Emily will grow and adapt
Problem is that it’s only the first season and people are already fully judging it as if it’s already fully completed

Because of the XIXth century. At this time, haute bourgeoisie had wife for children and mistress for sex AND to show how much they had money. The richer had to show off they could afford this "Cocotte"' (Grande horizontale, Demi Mondaine...) in event like horse races or opera. It was a requirement. And that's how Paris had this reputation of romantic city: riches came from all around the world for the parisian prostitutes like Liane de Pougy, la Belle Otero or Emilienne d'Alençon, the kind of prostitutes who know "le Tout-Paris" and had sex with princes.
That ended in 1914 or a bit before, but the reputation lasted.
Bravo! American living in Paris for the last 11 years and you’re spot on! Yes the show is enjoyable to watch but super unrealistic and definitely targeted to North Americans who tend to be ethnocentric...it made me realize how easily us Americans think people should be adapting to us when we travel or live abroad! that’s the downside of the show instead of Emily having a self-awareness moment and start adapting herself to the environment she keeps from episode 1 to the end of the season wanting France to adapt to her...
a lot of americans are like that. im met a lot from my travels in south asia, southeast asia and south america. most would comment on how thing should be up to their standards. 😒😒😒
@@antoniotottojr totally which is really a shame because one can learn a lot from other cultures without necessarily agreeing to everything or even saying anything. To me is more like a “spoiled child” syndrome and I say it with a lot of love to my compatriotes but that makes us quiet unbearable abroad. The French are def not perfect and tend to be more on the snobbish side but it’s perfectly normal for them to want people coming to their country to follow some rules. Otherwise stay in your homeland lol ;)
I think it's a starting point for this show. I think the character will evolve in the coming seasons. Also I think people are forgetting that this is a show..for entertainment. It's not supposed to be realistic
It would have been ok if there were some clichés but this show... Is ONLY that !!!! I'm French and I'm sooo ok with making fun of French culture and French people (when it's justified) but here it's just ridiculous.
Everybody wishes Paris was like that but it's nooot! AND you can make Paris attractive without making it seem like a fairytale. I love this city so much but it's not perfect !
And I'm sorry but Emily's character is beyond annoying. It's like miss perfect with her amazing ideas, meeting the hottest dudes at every corner of the city, rude, thinks she's always right and nothing is ever her fault (but "she means well"), lazy (but somehow always gets her way)... Huuuhhhh insufferable. She really is a Serena Van Der woodsen 2.0 lol
I totally agree, but come on serena was much better ! At least she had the reason why.. her character was the super extra rich spoilt brat.. a beautufil socialite . But she was counter balanced by Blair and Dan.. in this tv nobody challenges Emily’s character ..
For real get over it. Many (western/French) shows/movies where they are making fun of other cultures/religions by being arrogant, stereotypical and simply racist.
The point is not that there are a lot of clichés. The main point is that It is a lot cliché. Emily, like it is represented in the series, will be the next president of USA, because God, everything goes right for her. She always has great ideas and the others always have stupid ideas. She gets lunch with the most important people in the world even being absolutely no one, she gets more boyfriends in a day than you'll get in your entire life. She makes friends like she changes her uderwear. Is it so easy to make friends, or is it me the problem? By the way, Emily is going to have lunch with Biden tomorrow, Biden wants to hire her for his campaign. She is the best on marketing

It is such a cute series but I have been laughing with my French friend about this Disney Dream vision of Paris. I don’t think it has much to do with the real Paris or the real world for that matter. Perfect lockdown escapism though!
Nor do all married men have affairs! there’s a dffference between being tolerant toward infidelity and accepting affairs in a marriage. None of my French friends would be so tolerant or so quick to have an affair
Many people who work in glamourous and influent industries do not have the same lifestyle as any generic citizen. That's what the show is about too.
To every person saying "It's just a show"
No it is not. Series, films and so on have influence power. It's all about representation. Emily in Paris shows so much outdated cliches (sometimes it's pretty insulting, as a french person i can assure you about that) and these cliches stay in your mind whether you like it or not. Representation in films or series is so important. Why do little girls expect to meet a prince charming, marry him and make a bunch of children with him when they will be adults ? Is it because there is a gene in girl DNA making them want that or is it because this situation is always represented in films ? So no, Emily in Paris is not just a show. It is a product conveying things. And these things are annoying (at best) or harmful (at worse), nourishing stereotypes and, at the end, the way we consider foreigners in France. I have a question for you : Would you like a show showing your people as assholes ? I think not and you too surely.
So next time, hope you will try to question you a little more :)

To me, it'd be "just a show" if it was a French show about France. Obviously when you make a show about someone else's culture, people are going to feel some type of way about it. It's understandable for sure.

Classic case of “we have no problem dishing criticisms out on others but can’t take it once it’s directed towards us”
From a mixture of my experience and what I've read, the truest things I've seen so far are "the customer is not always right" scene with the steak in the restaurant, and the lady in the bakery correcting Emily's French!
I have learned so much about French culture because of this show - because there’s now a flood of videos from people debunking it and explaining how things really are. I find these to be really interesting. Thanks!
It is kind of disappointing though because they had an opportunity to make something so much better and they blew it. Oh well. Maybe they’ll learn from the feedback and make season 2 better.

Personally as a Frenchman I enjoyed the series, taking it to the second degree. The problem is that I'm not sure if foreigners take it in the 2nd degree, or if they prefer to stay in the 1st degree.
Haha exactly! I loved the show for how ridiculous and unrealistic it was. But I have seen already few American talking about how they enjoyed the show and dream to visit this fabulous city of Paris! You will not visit it, because it doesn't exist lol.

Absolutely! I'm the first one to say that I would watch a season 2 even with all the exagerrated stereotypes :) I can't even imagine what New Yorkers think of Sex and the City. But i really didn't find as many comparisons between the two shows as I thought I would with the same creator!

SATC irritated me to my core by your have throngs on women move to NYC thinking they will live in an amazing apartment in the West Village, on a writer’s salary while still being able to buy Manolos. 🤣. It’s fiction and fun. Anyone taking it too seriously needs to chill. My issue is that she doesn’t grow as a character. Seems vapid and I imagine it’ll get boring very quickly if there’s a season 2

Hen, if you just want a cute distraction then why not make a show about the streets of NY or something, or revive that broadway nostalgia if that's closer to what you actually know. Paris is not just an escapist fantasy, it's a real place and romanticising it like that while criticising its people for not upholding your out of touch standards is a continuous problem for most European cities and not to mention the world at large.
We're allowed to take offense because this tone deaf "distraction"points to a larger problem that shows people are still not getting how problematic this is in 2020. If you're an expat and not a tourist, you're not supposed to use your surroundings as a backdrop for clout without truly investing in the actual culture, even if you don't like it.
That americo-centrism/cultural saviour moment just isn't cute naivety at this point if you put yourself or a show in a position of judgement. It's borderline offensive for a show to be that ignorant about a culture it claims to portray.

The most outrageous thing of all is pretending that we Frenchies work only a few hours a week. When you dare leaving at 7 pm your managers/ coworkers literally look at you as if you were taking your day off.

And what was that, picturing French people like a bunch of jaleous & old fashioned people needed to be rescued by an American girl? Of course new ideas are super valuable and challenging and in a work environment it's great but come on... To be honest I found that was way more annoying that all the clichés. That being said, I watched it and I enjoyed it, taking it for what it is : fiction! :)
So new ideas are valuable but if they’re American ideas they’re not? 😂 I’m teasing, but the premise of the show is that an American company buys/acquires a French company and is trying to integrate their companies ideas, policies etc. into this French company -that’s why they sent Emily over and why she’s so obnoxious at first (well, for the whole show) bc she was told to work on marketing, social media and *update* (lol) them with American ideas. The French people are very understandably irritated by this, and look at her as an imposition, which makes perfect sense. Why should a non-French speaking Americans 20-something come in to change and control how they work or how they do social media? They’re a bit ruder then they need to be, but that’s for the entertainment value, they’re not necessarily demonized by the show, just understandably against this annoying new intrusion. I think it would be different if Emily was portrayed as the most likeable character and spoke French and was doing everything right with starting the job, but she wasn’t and is portrayed as a bit annoying and lucky! Her lack of growth in the rest of the show is a shame, I think there’s a huge shift in how the pilot is set up and how the rest of the show goes
@@oliviaoconnor2201 Ahah that's not what I meant (actually I'm working for the french office of an american company and I'm pretty much the only one excited by the changes they make, the new ideas they bring so I do not have any problem with american ideas... and I think many american ideas work-related are great (not the "all is great I'll never tell you something is wrong but you have to know it anyway and fix it" though ;). I get what you say and tbh the way Emily acts at work is totally fine, she does not try to be bossy, she just suggests to try new things. My problem is that the french company is shown as really behind like they have no idea the world evolved.
But actually my own comment made me reflect about my own workplace and I had to say that my collegues are pretty much the caricature this show describes... And maybe I was annoyed because it's a caricature but it's close to what happens when french and american way of work meet!

You are funny and I learn a few things too! I saw the preview of the show and completely laughed at how silly it was. I have visited Paris twice and found the people really really nice and helpful. Yes, just like anywhere else in the world, knowing a few basic phrases truly helped and it’s simple polite and courteous to say bonjour!

I also lived in Paris as a student and our reality was so far from that!
I haven’t seen the show yet but I would totally be expressing myself like you just did 😂. I want to see the show and pin point everything that’s incorrect. Girl you had me laughing through out this video my opinion would of been the same.
About the "chambre de bonne", you're totally right. To complete the list of mistakes: as you say, the "chambres de bonnes" are under the roof, and when Emily opens the window, she is not at the last floor, so it's clearly a "normal appartment". Also, in the buildings with "chambres de bonnes", the access to them is not the same than the access to regular appartments: the main big stairs in the entrance of the building as in the film are for regular appartments and don't go to the "chambres de bonnes", the stairs for the chambres de bonnes are very small and dark in the back of the court (and at each floor, there is an access to the kitchen of each appartments, for the "bonnes" to come and go whitout being noticed by rich owners!)
So she couldn't have met her neighbourg from 5th floor!
My movie advice to get the spirit of the "chambres de bonnes": "les femmes du 6eme étage" with Fabrice Luchini. Great french movie!
The 'chambres de bonnes' can actually been accessed by the main staircase depending on the building and can be bright and have a very nice view on the streets :)
you don't know all the chambres de bonnes in Paris. There are hundreds of them and not all look the same. Some have been renovated by the owners and equipped with bathrooms and kitchenettes. I myself have lived in Parisian chambres de bonnes 2 times in the late 1970s and early 1980s The first one was in the 6th quarter and the second one was on blvd du Montparnasse (14th quarter). My neighbour on the same roof top floor had a better and bigger chambre de bonne equipped with a full bathroom /toilet and hot water in side his. Mine had just a washing basin and cold water. The toilet is a Turkish toilet outside.

Emily in Paris is not a documentary.. and purely fiction for entertainment.. and it does entertain and gave us all a wonderful comedy break from the pandemic and beautiful scenes of Paris..for those of us who could not travel..

I’ve was in Morocco for 1.5 years, in Germany for a summer, and in Honduras for a year, and I was thoroughly disappointed by this show. They could have really explored the loneliness and the struggle that happens when adapting to a new culture, but just barely touched the surface. Learning a new language is hard, but Emily doesn’t even try. They totally missed out on some interesting character arcs they could have followed... You were totally right about not making real true friends with a local for about a year (for me that was the case, except for in Germany, where the people were incredibly accepting)... but yeah, most people won’t find a good friend in a local until they’ve acclimated to the culture and learned the language! And that takes a long time and a lot of struggle

This show is a guilty pleasure. When I lived in NY I had two roommates from Paris. I watch it for the fashion, the setting and the actors in it. I love the cast. I'm so glad it's more diverse than older Darren Star shows but hopefully it becomes even more diversified.

I've actually watched it so many times just because travelling is not an option right now and I miss Paris 😂, didn't really care about the cliches and exaggerations, just a great show to bring me back to Paris and re-live my days there 😣

The actress that plays Emily seems jaded from acting. Most of her lines are so... how do I say it... She just says them without realness, like reading a script. And she rolls her eyes too much. Basically, a different actress who's fresh at acting would be better for this role.
There's nothing wrong with the actress, Lily Collins, It's just she doesn't just fits this role of Emily who is already a bad character

I was wondering how you would react when I watched the first episode a couple of days ago, and you rose to the challenge! Among other howlers, I'm glad you pointed out the indoor smoking--there used to be a time when that actually was a thing, because non-smoking regulations went unenforced. I myself had some difficult times in my early days as a civil service manager to convince die-hard tobacco addicts to bloody walk outside if they wanted to light up. But as you rightly point out, France has come a long way since then, thankfully.
They have come so far! As a culture with way more smokers or people who are used to smokers even if they don't, it's hard to get laws like that enforced!

Hi, I am a French expat in Germany, and I actually loved watching the first episode of this show. Yes, there are lots of exaggerations and inaccuracies but intrinsically it is a quite good picture of Paris and Parisians, way closer than any other American movies taking place in Paris, which are all rosy, so overly romantic that I sometimes want to puke. I am thrilled that a TV show decided to base the story around cultural shocks. for me it is a first, but if I missed any please let me know, I would love to hear of it/them :-) yes, English level of actors is too good to be true but can we blame the production? If this was to be completely realistic, it would be a catastrophe, no viewers would watch the show longer than 10 min, including me! Ahaha regarding your comment regarding the boss, my hint after watching the first episode is that they want to do a French version of The devil wears Prada . the background is actually realistic, how do you say it in English, Emily est sur un terrain miné. the 20 Something American girl comes to give a lecture to the older French woman and comes from the new buyer. There is always a lot of resistance to change when a company is being bought by another one. what tactually shocked me was the last scene of the first episode about cyber sex. This was so unrealistic! I mean come on, you cannot decide to make a sex scene without showing an inch of nudity! We are not in Middle Ages anymore where a man could be turned on and actually come, just by looking at a nude shoulder!!! In a nutshell, I loved this show because despite all the inaccuracies and exaggerations, it is the most accurate view on Paris I have seen in an American show and all the scenes are in Paris (even a scene where the boyfriend should be in Chicago, was taken in La Defense in front of my ex employer, I must say I was wondering for a sec if he was making her a joke and would be appearing at the next corner after the call). I will definitely watch the next episodes, I don't expect anything hilarious and nothing comparable to cult TV show of sex and the city but this was light entertaining, and I felt like I was in Paris for half an hour (sigh) ;-)

Love this video, Kate! :D Another fun one to do may be on what Emily in Paris got right. For example, when they mentioned that in the States, we live to work whereas in France, we work to live-- I thought that was rather accurate! :) Plus, Emily's reaction to the pain au chocolat was basically me the first time I stepped into a boulangerie.
I'm a notfromParis French. And I did get a "Sylvie" as a boss at the massive marketing company I worked at when in Paris for 6 months. So that part I think is not too far from reality. And I saw these affairs situations like between Sylvie and Antoine in other work places in France. Not saying it's accepted more than in other countries though.
How long did you last on that job? Also was she shit to you?
@@shinigami956 it was a 6 months contract. After 1 month we both realised we couldn't work together so she put me to work with someone else. She gave me shit in the sense that it was my first job, she was impatient, intolerant, contemptuous, and I think we just had very different values and priorities, as simple as that (working late just because, talking all day and at the end saying "I have to stay longer than all of you as I have so much work", and so avoiding going home to her children, acting like a peacock with every man from the office etc.) Then she realised I was actually working well, when it was someone else, so she wanted to take me back few months later... But then she was more respectful.

I really enjoyed the show and the scenery was fantastic the costumes were beautiful and the storyline was a bit of fun it doesn't matter if it was accurate or not. It was great to see especially considering the year that we've had.
