  • There's so much buzz around the French diet and people searching for advice on how to Eat like the French! We've all heard that French people don't get fat right? We land in Paris and wonder why we gain 15 pounds in a week while French women stay slim? And all of this while being told that French women don't diet? Ugh!
    After living in France for a combined 14 years, we have seen our fair share of very slim French people and pretty average to overweight French people, too. But what we know for sure is that, in Paris, the VAST MAJORITY of French women and men are very slim, thin, slender, whatever you want to call it. So what is it about the French diet or, more particularly, the Parisian diet that is so effective? Well it's not ALL cigarettes and coffee, promise ;)
    🍎🍎🍎
    Join us on our EAT LIKE A PARISIAN DIET CHALLENGE where we test out 5 key principles based on the best practices we've observed when it comes to Parisian women and their approach to food. We want to see if, by eating like they do, we can potentially lose weight and feel healthier!

    Think of this video series as a mini French diet documentary!
    We are on a quest to experiment and understand frequently searched questions like:
    - Why are French people so slim?
    - Why don't French women get fat?
    - Why are the French able to eat so much butter and cream and not get fat?
    - How do French people stay slim without dieting or going to the gym?
    - What is the typical French diet?
    Full disclosure, we have not read the existing books on why French people don't get fat (we've made this up using our own intuition), but if you would like to do so, here are the links:

    A few tricks I got from my grandma (at 94 she's still in great shape):
    Start your meal with soup or salad (green salad, cold veggies salad....)
    Half your plate should be veggies (potatoes are not considered to be veggies )
    Use fresh ingredients
    No eating between meals
    Walk at least 2-3km a day
    Dine around 7:30 pm so you're not full when you go to bed
    Et surtout prend le temps de mâcher! (Chew your food before swallowing it)

      I have a very good French friend and she lives by this. Always salad, always fruit, doesn't eat between meals, no sugary snacks, only eats sweets (toast and jam usually) in the morning. Never after 2 pm. She says she was raised like this. And she always always eats at the same time (and always bread) and she is slim.

      I am a French chef working in the US. Yes, the absence of health awareness coupled with bad habits is a real problem.

    Eating like a Parisian is such an elegant way to eat. Here in the U.S. ( at least for me) snacking, eating anytime of the day and drinking soda was a very common way to eat. I’m happy to have these guidelines and am very excited to do this challenge. Thank you for this .

    I have to say that I frequently recommend “French women don’t get fat” to any friends that ask how I stayed small during and after pregnancy. I read it years ago when i gained the “freshman 15” at school and it really helped me understand why things were getting out of whack. The principles it explains (many of them which you highlighted) are quite broad and applicable, rather than extreme or restricted to people who have access to certain food or gyms. Can’t recommend enough. Good luck on your journey and have fun!

    French cuisine is above all the quality of the products. That's important for us and will gladly do the effort of going to the farmer market or local shops to buy locally and traditionally produced food. The more natural the merrier. I'll never buy a cheese made out of pasteurized milk for example. It's not really more expansive, I'm not from a rich family at all, worker middle class, but my dad (yes, it was my dad cooking at home) was always cooking fresh vegetables, dairy and meat from the market. I've barely ever eaten industrialized food through my childhood and teens. Now, as an adult, I'm trying as much as possible to avoid super market industrialized food and so I buy mostly local products.
    For me french food is simple and a meal will be centered on a main produce that will 'transcend'. It's a refined and subtle cuisine, not like other cuisine worldwide (which are good also but different) where you'll mix a lot of ingredient together with a lot of spice so the taste at the end is a big mix and you can't properly isolate one product. To cook french properly you have to start by knowing which product will be at the center of your meal (whether it's a vegetable or a meat/fish) and then you'll magnify this particular by associating it with vegetables and a sauce (and a wine) that will make this main ingredient taste as best as possible. If the side vegetables or the sauce override the main flavour then you've failed. It is also important, for a proper meal, that the starter, the cheese and the dessert are compatible with that main ingredient.
    So all together to cook french you need: good and natural products, consistency through your meal, a main flavour that will be made greater by the way of cooking and the rest of the meal (involve a lot of balance between the ingredients), not too much of anything. And finally, you need the will to dedicate some of your time to cook, it's a little discipline to have in your life. It's easier to go to the supermarket and get pre-cooked meal, or, if you're rich, to eat outside all the time. In both case it's not healthy and you're missing a connexion with the food. You don't need to be rich (fresh vegetables from the farmer market aren't more expansive than what you get at the supermarket), but you need to have a bit of will and discipline!

    As a french person (not living in Paris because France it's not only Paris ;) ) just want to mention that if it is difficult for strangers to adapt to our "eating habits" it's only a question of education. In France we have the "5 fruits and vegetables a day" and a lot of other traditions that we learn since we are very young so Yes french people take weight as you say we are humans but as we are in a country where food is the center of our life we have to know how to eat otherwise we will have a lot of health problem.
    We eat a lot, really a lot, but we eat "healthy things" means without "bad" industrial transformation like vegetables, fruits, legum, fresh bread, water, cake but not too sugary or not too much.
    I think the main "secret" is the one about water! In general french people drink a lot of water during meals but also during the day.
    And all is a question of metabolism because some french people take easily a lot of weight as American people don't take anything... Be careful when you present french "diet" just because this is not a good point of view to take Paris as an example because people who live in Paris are maybe richer than a lot of other cities so they have other habits and other way of life!
    Good luck for your challenge!

    I've been watching a lot of videos this week on the French/Parisian diet and adapted it for myself - no snacking, 4 meals a day at around the same time, no processed foods/taking the time to enjoy both prep+eating, and walking 30 minutes+ every day. I use the weekends to enjoy a bakery item for breakfast/dessert, but have reduced my overall sugar intake. I can already say it has made a difference in my energy and digestion, and I love it because it is certainly more of a lifestyle change than a diet!

    I always thought it was the lifestyle. I've seen this comment before where us North Americans talk about how it's a necessity to have a car. It's also very cold for me in Canada during the winters so you'd have to make an effort to get daily activity. In Paris, people walk everywhere or take the transit. But almost everything requires walking. You walk to work, or walk + transit to work, walk to the groceries, walk to the bars, walk home, or walk to the park. I've lived in the one of the suburb cities of Toronto, and a rural town in central Alberta. You need a car to get to work, a car to go to Costco, a car to go to the park, and a car to see your friends and family. The most walking you do is to getting out of your vehicle from the parking spot and into your job that requires you to sit or stand all day. The most exercise I get is at the grocery store once a week or having to choose a form a exercise. ... When I lived in Lyon for a bit, I biked everywhere and walked. Didn't use a vehicle at all. I lost like 20 lbs just living. I didn't smoke either so smoking wasn't factor in my weightloss. When I came back from Europe to Canada, I realized how huge parking spaces were. One Walmart parking space in the suburbs would have already been like 20 small boutiques in Paris that you could walk to and buy all your essentials.

    • @UnintentionallyFrenchified
      @UnintentionallyFrenchified 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      K Mop i totally agree that if you don’t live in a place where you can ditch your car the excercise part is really rough. I think if I was in your place, I would try to park farther away to get in a walk with the snow or cold isn’t too rough 🥶 and do some daily neighborhood walks like if you had a dog and needed to go out. But that’s me just thinking of ideas for you. Not sure if it helps!

      Walking everywhere totally makes a difference. When I lived in New York, I walked most places, or took public transit - which required walking to the bus or subway station, usually taking stairs, and walking from another station to the final destination. I didn't even own a car. When I moved to Phoenix, which has much less public transit and where it's just too hot to walk outside most of the year, I immediately gained weight, even though I was still eating basically the same amounts/types of food.

    • @sistaschin
      @sistaschin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also live in Ontario, Canada, in a medium sized city. I walk and take the bus everywhere. Even though the majority of people on public buses here are students or seniors, we have to be the change and take pride in taking the bus/walking. It's a choice. You can also choose to drive to Costco once per month but use public transit for daily commuting.

      P. V. Thanks for your comment. Not my experience. For instance in Asia the French are keen to criticize a meal because bread is not available in a restaurant. What to answer when they ask about having local Asian cheese if not available because not common with the local diet ?
      Regarding the interest for diversity, I see more exotic restaurants in the UK than in France.
      In any sector of their life, the French won’t leave their comfort zone and are risk adverse. Normal they are proud of their food and their culture, but it does not justify being so conservative and reluctant to innovation. This is definitely part of the French mentality.

    • @charlotter.7274
      @charlotter.7274 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@habsheim0 That is sad you got this experience. We love our food obvioulsy but we don't expect it to exist in other countries. Actually a french restaurant abroad won't attract a lot of french because we know that most of them try to do french cuisine to attract people but usually fails. However we know that everything that goes with the meal must be made for the meal so I would never ask bread for a meal that wasn't made to be eaten with it. As you said being proud of our culture doesn't mean we should be reluctant to innovation and I know a lot of french people who are really interested in other cultures so I wanted to tell you that what you experienced doesn't speak for a big part of France.

    I'll add a tip I've found useful since being in France, on the point of fresh food prep. My partner often travels so I cool for one but the items usually come in a size for two or four people. So I double up if I can, and eat it the next day. Saves on cooking every day if you're not overly fond of the kitchen. I've translated this now into when I cook for all of use, double up on a stew or pasta sauce and freeze. Means only 4 days of real cooking so the exhausting factor doesn't kick in and your reach for the phone for a delivery.

    I'm excited! As a family we have been changing our eating habits to french eating habits. So the fact that you are doing this is perfect timing for me! I will say that taking out snacks for my youngest child has been difficult as she is learning to eat enough food to make it from one meal to the next. The main thing I love is sitting down at a table with my family sharing food and sharing their company. In our American culture that is sourly missed! There is not a diet I have done that compares to the feeling I get as when I get to sit down at a table with my husband and 4 kids every day to eat home cooked food, and share each other's time. Thanks for reading, Carrie Spencer

      I'm French and I just wanted to add that our little ones have more meals until they are 8 / 10 y o. When they go to school they get a somewhat healthy snack (depending on the school) at 10 am (juice + piece of bread with either honey, a small piece of chocolate, jam, or fruit).
      And then when parents come to pick up kids at 4pm they bring a cookie or nuts + applesauce, fruit or something like that :)

    • @TheTinyMiniChannel
      @TheTinyMiniChannel 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and after 6 y o the school generally stops providing snacks (again, depends on what schools!) so it is up to the parents to decide. But they generally put cookies in the schoolbag for the 10 am snack

    I’m so glad I came across this video on your channel. I think I will try to follow along! I imagine you two are pretty young but do you have any insight about how families with children eat? My kids would probably die without snacks lol and I’m sure there are some differences. I also wonder about the bigger lunches/smaller dinners and if that is typical when you have more mouths to feed.

    • @UnintentionallyFrenchified
      @UnintentionallyFrenchified 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kristen King hi Kristen! Rosie and I don’t have kids yet, but from what I notice French kids ALWAYS have a goûter/snack after school. It’s often something sweet, a bit of Nutella on bread, a little pastry etc... otherwise they seem to follow the general rule of a good sized breakfast, a large lunch, a snack, and a lighter dinner. Of course kids are growing and should eat until they are full but normally that means extra applesauce for dessert or more of the healthiest option on their plate if they are still hungry. Hope this helps though I’m not the most relevant person to help 🤪🙏🏾

    Very much enjoying your channel and great subject. As an american I know I gained weight when I did a semester abroad in France. I had to try everything and portion control was not my objective. But one thing I do now, in regards to just doing water and no sodas or sugary juices, and it really works for me - I squeeze the juice of a lemon in a glass of water. I often drink this first thing in the morning, It cleans out your liver and I do it at least 4x per week. If I have a desire for a sweet beverage for lunch or dinner. I do the juice of one lemon in a glass, and add 1 packet of stevia, you can do 2 packets but if you add too much it can give a weird after taste if you are not used to it. It totally satisfies me and its healthy. I also drink a glass of lemon water without stevia usually when I start to not feel well or have swollen glands; and I've not been sick or had any colds all this past year and I believe that is part of it. Lemons are really amazing healers, I know it kind of goes against "eat whatever you want but in small portions rule" but if you don't do real sugar in your beverage maybe you can have that chocolate whatsit. It also helps me get out of the habit of wanting foods with refined sugar all the time. Another alternative to stevia for those who can't stand it is a little grade B Maple syrup, better for you then white sugar.
    Thanks for the videos, keep them coming.

      Oui toutes ces histoires d'exception française alimentaire me laissent sceptique. On fait passer des trucs de bon sens (manger à table, ne pas manger entre les repas, manger équilibré et des portions limitées) que l'on retrouve en fait dans de nombreuses cultures pour un truc spécial, exotique, un "régime" qui demanderait une application particulière et déboucherait sur des obsessions aberrantes de maigreur (parisienne affamée fumant des clopes pour ne pas avoir faim). Et on finit subtilement par nous reprocher notre "conservatisme" ou le fait d'adhérer à des "traditions" et d'être rétif au "changement" ou aux modes alimentaires des autres.

      @@helenehelene1321 On est surtout très axé sur la médecine et les sciences, les français sont + capable de faire appel à leur bon sens, et à leur esprit critique. On va par exemple regarder les étiquettes des industrielles et avoir tendance à ne pas faire confiance à la société de consommation. Et je pense que c'est une excellente chose qu'on utilise un peu notre cerveau, même si en vérité c'est pas assez. Mais comparé au reste du monde je trouve que le Français a beaucoup + de bon sens en général sur la majorité des sujets. Je pense que c'est aussi pour ça qu'on passe pour des râleurs aux yeux du monde, mais en fait on a raison de "râler" c'est comme ça qu'on fait avancer les choses au lieu de consommer sans se poser de questions.

    • @PierrotHG
      @PierrotHG 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Curieuse façon de voir les choses. Nous serions en quelques sorte moins gros en moyenne que dans d'autre pays seulement parce que nous serions plus méchants et moins tolérants qu'ailleurs. Et pas parce que la cantine scolaire serait globalement de meilleures qualité, que les gens, de manière générale, mangeraient un peu plus équilibré ou consommeraient des aliments plus sains, passeraient plus de temps à table et mangeraient en moins grande quantité que dans d'autres pays développés.
      Et les parisiennes sont sveltes parce qu'elles fument des clopes et avalent des litres de café pour couper leur faim.
      Moi je n'ai pas l'impression de "devoir faire attention". On m'a appris à "manger de tout", à "prendre le temps de mâcher", on m'a appris que les choses grasses et sucrées devaient être consommer en petite quantité ou avec modération. Je n'ai pas l'impression de me priver ou de devoir me conformer aux regards des autres.

    As an american who grew up in Paris, I've seen both worlds and made comparisions all my life. I don't disagree with anything you've said on the way Parisians eat. It's definitely different than a lot of anglophone countries (I'm currently living in the UK, and there's a whole other debate on how the english eat). I don't think it's a diet that will help you lose weight though. I think it's more of a way of eating that helps maintain your current weight. You won't gain any, but you won't lose any either. I do think that it's a healthier way of eating though, so good luck!

    Hello I'm french and I found interesting how you see our way of feeding. We have different traditions but we have the same problems with the modern life. When you don't take the time to cook (beacause of your work or any other reason), you eat more industrial food that contains lots of sugar and salt. So even if you make a lot of sport it becomes difficult to spend all this energy what makes you fat. As you say take the time to eat without being disturbed and take also the time to cook. Buy some vegetables and meat and cook it just as you like using as less industrial products as you can

    The secret of French women remaining slim is that they watch what they eat. They eat smaller portions of good food, drink very little alcohol, and they watch their weight. Also have some sort of exercise regime. I listen to what my French girlfriend says about diet and exercise and my own diet had improved without weight gain.

      It’s so hard not to, I guess my body isn’t used to it. I snack on fruit and veg in between breakfast and lunch and in between lunch and dinner. Any tips on how to stop it? My stomach rumbles if I don’t snack which is embarrassing.

      Hello, what I do is eating a proper meal each time. I will just give you an example, a lot of people are simply eating a sandwich at lunch. What about preparing a proper lunch ? Starter, mains and dessert ? It is not as hard as it sounds. For instance, you can make a salad for starters, then reheat something you prepared over the week end for mains and have a dessert. It takes a little bit of organisation. And if you feel like something between... why not? But you will be better off eating something that you prepared yourself... at least you know what you put in it. And eat SLOWLY ! Hope this helps. All the best...

    Hi hope you will do a weekly updaté on youtube because I'm not on other social networks. For the syrup try the teissere 0%,no sugar, but really Nice flavor. I lost many kg years ago and the one of the secret When Cooking at home is to play with the chewing texture, "la mache " in french, and to adjust this parameter, thé best way is to use a mandoline, and use it for every meal, with it you can adjust the thickness of you slice, go to dehillerin near les halles and buy à japonese mandoline, it will cost you about 30 euros. But believe me this is the most important item in my kitchen.
