I’ve talked a lot on my channel about those pesky stereotypes surrounding French men, but I haven’t spent near as much time talking about French women stereotypes. Since I recently got my French nationality and I’m officially FRENCH (YESSS!!!) I feel like this is the perfect time to dish on some of those false French women stereotypes that make me cringe.
Whether it's that French women are always rude, that French women don't get fat, that French women are always effortlessly chic, sometimes you don't know if the French stereotypes are true or false? but in this video I reveal the truth behind french stereotypes. Frenchman here: I never went on strike ever, I never stopped working (not even one day in-between jobs) and I stopped working at 71.

As a French living elsewhere in Europe...I agree about nearly everything you said... but even in France, Parisians, have a reputation for being quite gruff on first meeting them. However, I do agree: there is more depth to European friendships. I think it might be because Americans are still quite close to their "settling" past. It was important to be friendly and helpful as the conditions required solidarity to help survival, but you could not afford to really give your heart away and have it broken as your new friends move on. Also, I think we might not put as much weight on because of the composition of our food. Compare: 100g of bread in France (or continental Europe generally. Sadly, the UK is more like the USA in this respect) will have fewer calories and contain less (or no) sugar and fat. A lot of us continentals put weight in the UK because, while we think we are eating the same as in France, Switzerland etc, we are in fact eating stuff which is pumped full of fat and sugar. Continentals also move a lot more on a day to day basis. We walk places etc. Sometimes, I have to stop friends giving me a ride because they do not envisage that I should walk a mile to get back home...Thank you for this...and I can't remember when I last or ever wore stilettos :)

I found that these Parisienne stereotypes are a extreme minority of women born to cash, raised to fit that old Bourgeoisie stereotype and not representative of the majority of French women.
The stereotype definitely fits the "born and raised in a (sort of) Bourgeoisie", but regular women tend to try and look like them. So the full stereotype doesn't represent the majority of French women, but a lot of French women try to appear like a stereotype
Bah perso je suis parisienne et je trouve que c'est quand même vrai. Toutes les françaises ne le sont pas ça c'est sûr mais si on prend juste les femmes élégantes, on en trouvera plus en France qu'au Usa (c'est mon avis perso)

I’m an immigrant to US. In US the upfront ‘friendliness’ is fake. Out of sight out of mind. Puts me off when someone is overly friendly. It takes time to make and be friends.
People in USA move often. It is great that we are friendly enough. You go deep when you click.
I definitely agree that the stereotype of the French being rude is not true! Everyone I pass always says hello and I haven’t experienced anyone being rude for the past few months I’ve been here. I feel like in Los Angeles I came across rude people all the time, in Aix I haven’t experienced it at all.
I can 1000% agree. I absolutely hated living in LA. Especially working in the cosmetics industry I got so many rude people who were awful to me. Or everyone wanted to be your friend for the wrong reasons (aka to get ahead) Where as in France they are polite, but not overly friendly. When I made a French friend I knew it was because they actually wanted to be with friends me, not just to gain something.
So agree with you that if a french person is making an effort to be friends, they really want to! In the US you can never really be sure!

@@Samchocolate11 it is difficult in adulthood to make new friends in general, but I would say that the French usually don't value new friendships and do not actively look for new friendships. Most of them put a lot of emphasis on spontaneity.

I've never met a french woman having a child and not going back to work unless they were seniors.
And I'm french. My mom always went to work after having a child (if she could have went to work while pregnant, she would have went ! She is a workaholic). And any women I know did so too. What's that idea? I've never heard of that. I literally thought only Japan had that stereotype.
I didn't know the Japanese stereotype actually. I had heard of the French one and the German one! But i personally find that most women are jumping back to the same routine they had pre birth when maternity leave is over with too.

There're not really newish, as a french woman, I can tell you that they've been considered pretty fashionable for more than 15 years.

@@Sadi_K So many TH-camrs and bloggers have been warning us to NEVER wear athletic (even simple/sleek) in Paris (at least). Then all of a sudden, in the last few years they seemed to become a thing. Maybe it was just Paris.
I think it was a specifically Paris thing. When I was there (last in 2015) I looked and didn't see any. Anyway, not a big deal. I'll be very happy to wear them, if only we could visit again!!
If I recall correctly the Stan Smith invasion started in 2013/2014... There was more variety in sneakers before that.
I have been in US for 10 years, but still has no friends. Even though I speak good English and am a US citizen, I don't feel I belong. That's the friendly US you are talking about it.
I am an American and I must say it is hard to make friends if you have moved (as I have) to a new place, especially if it’s a small town. Everyone knows everyone and they aren’t open to new people or different ways of thinking.
I hear you! I have been here for a little over 20 years and my experience is that superficial friends are abundant when you try to fit in with the fake culture, aka abundant drinking buddies, but a real friend if you are into deeper things I really have only met two ladies that I can call friends.
I am Venezuela and I've been living in the US for 3 years and I still do not have American friends and speak fluent english. I feel I don't belong either for some reason :(

US is friendly. The checkout lady at Walmart wants to talk, the waitress will have a long conversation with you or a random stranger will start a chat . Person you don’t know will wave at you in your neighborhood or say hello, but that doesn’t mean they want to be friends. It’s more of cultural practice . They are also very nosey so they want to know your business . However when it comes to close circles they tend to keep with their own people ( religion, sexual orientation, upbringing or skin color ).

When I was in Paris I noted several women whose hair looked very unruly. One woman was with a group of people dining, she looked well dressed as did the group, but her hair in the back was super tangled and matted. I did not get that.
They probably save on water as well.
There are so many influencers who are telling everyone they are not working out. That is so sad, because you can actually see that they are doing weight lifting wearing a corset 😢. I hate liers

Congratulations on becoming officially French! I hope you didn't have to renown your US citizenship. One thing I noticed in your video is Christmas stockings, they are so cute! Red for Robin, white for Kate and a mix of the two for Eleonore! Love, love, love! I also was kind of disappointed to hear that French women do go to the gym to exercise. I've watched a bunch of videos about French people before, and was glad that they don't make exercise their priority in life, they just walk a lot everywhere and hence stay fit. I'm not fond of the pastel colors in wardrobe, but I understand why women do it, easier to match with the rest of the clothes. Being friends with ex girlfriends would bother me too, and endless debates would be a nightmare. I hear you :-)
going to the gym is not a big thing in france, a minority of people go there, the majority of people rather walk or run in park or forest. But not the majority of people work out or do exercices.

You've gotta admit that EVERYBODY in France is nice and thin. I spent a week in Paris and Toulouse last year and don't recall seeing one overweight local, anywhere I went. And then it dawned on me, the reason there are so many chunky/chubby/bulky people in the US is that we grow up drinking sugary soft drinks with practically everything. On the other hand it's rare to even see sweet sodas being sold in France and nobody drinks them with meals or for refreshment.
My whole family is not nice and thin. They are just average to overweight. Just like everyone else in the world. Infact, being French doesnt make them gym more, eat different, dress different or behave any different to anyone else in the world. Just humans, like you and me.
As much as I would like to agree with you, I must break your illusions and tell you it is not true. I am French and I am overweight and I know a number of people that fit in the obese category. Of course, if you take into account that the Americans have one of the highest obesity rates in the world, surely the French seem thin. But that is simply not true and obesity has been a growing concern in France for a number of years.
For the record, what struck me when I visited my sister when she lived in Chicago was that, by French standards, Americans were either really fat or really fit with next to no people in between.

Congratulations on your French citizenship! I live in the UK and find the French maternity leave so bad. It's good in terms of salary but bad in terms of length. Statutory pay in the UK is low but lots of companies give enhanced pay (mine gives 6 months) and you can take up to a year. Most people take at least 6 months, but usually more. I took 10 months both times and I'm so grateful. It was time that I've had with ny children that I would have never gotten back. So happy I had them in the UK instead of France.
I completely understand Cat. I guess because i compare to the US, i feel so so lucky to have given birth in France. but at the same time, if you compare to the UK, or the nordic countries or Germany, you're like ummm say what?!!
I find this really weird considering that unicef ranked the UK as one of the least family friendly country in Europe , ranking at 28th for 31 countries , and France ranking at the tenth place
@@T0xiikGaz14 well, it's the truth. It's the law in the UK that you can take 12 months + your annual leave. The maternity statutory pay is very little so you have to save to be able to take all that time off. But in France, most women I know take 3 months off, if they're lucky, they take 6 months off. In the UK, everyone I know take at least 6 months off, usually a lot more. It wasn't unusual at all for me to take 10 months off.

@@T0xiikGaz14 And I've been speaking of maternity leave which I have compared my experience with those I know who live in the UK and those I know who live in France and I am grateful that I've experienced maternity leave in the UK which has let me take so much time off. The 12 months in the UK is what is called extended maternity leave and any employed woman can benefit from it. The main difference between the first 6 months and taking the 6 additional months is that you are not guaranteed to go back to the exact same job you were doing before. Your employer can assign you a different job as long as it is exactly within the same conditions and responsibilities as your previous role. Quite often women do go back to the same job they were doing before regardless.
Parental leave is a completely different policy.

To me, overweight is not just related to social pressure. It's also because french healthcare system is based on solidarity. It means if you have in trouble because of your obesity, everyone will have to pay for it.

I keep hearing that people in the US are much friendlier than we are in Europe and I just have to wonder how much friendlier are they? I mean if you compare them to the mediterreneans are they friendlier? Is that even possible?
My personal opinion (having visited, never lived in other areas of Europe) is that being very friendly with strangers is a real sign of being polite in the US. So do i think Americans are friendlier with strangers. Absolutely. But in life in general are they friendlier? When we talk about family, friends, colleagues... not really.
When I lived in spain I found that Spanish people are friendlier than french, but I live in other countries, and in Africa, I found people were friendlier too. I concluded that in countries where the weather is warmer, people tend to socialize more because they go out more (in Spain you can go shopping the sunday, a lot of thing are open sunday where in France their are not). There's just another vibe. We I came back in France after being in Madrid for 6 years, the weather hit me hard on the face (cold weather is not for me) , I got a bit depressed by it (vive l'Alsace), but now I use vitamin D supplements so everything is good. And also I'm an introvert, making new friends wasn't easy. I have been in the same Spanish class with the same people for 5 years (depuis la 4ème) and I barely know them 😂😂.
As an American who has lived in France and traveled throughout Europe, I can tell you Americans are friendlier. But it’s a fake friendly. Really, we just smile and say hello to strangers a lot and act like everyone is our friend even if we’ve just met. Whereas Europeans I’ve found are more likely to be what many Americans would say are “cold”. Seeing as I have bad social anxiety though, I prefer French societal norms with strangers than American!

I am a Frenchy living in Australia, and everyone tells me I smile all the time and that I am friendly and approachable but quite a few people told me they thought French were rude haha, but not me 😅 Haha. I do feel French don't really go to the gym though, I don't but I love walking, hiking and being active in general just not working out for the sake of it...Here in Australia, people would drive everywhere and work out at the gym to balance things out, what the point?! I don't get it 😅 My friends in France also like being active or go to some fitness classes like yoga or Zumba but that's about it, far from being gym junkies I must say! Love your videos 🤩
Well, Australia is a sparsely populated continent , so naturally the Aussies drive a lot. It's entirely possible to drive for days without seeing another human being. Not only that, but it has very challenging geography and climate, and walking long distances in extreme heat is foolish and futile.

Congrats on citizenship! My experience was bit different I've never wore sneakers in Paris for 20 years. And I had lots of ballets flats 3-5-7 cm leather heels and would walk in them comfortably from Marais to Opera for my work everyday. Also never went to gym and neither did any women I've known. I've learned while being nanny from Parisian ladies to walk a lot 1-2 hours a day. Take a stairs and buy appartment on 5 floor. Some swimming or yoga at home. Eating mindfully and that was it 😂

We actually get 3 full months at full pay for maternity leave. It started 3 years ago. I work at a fairly big bank based out of NY.

Je suis totalement d'accord. Pas de talons hauts (stilettos). Trop casse-gueule. Par contre, beaucoup de petites chaussures cuir talon large et 2/3 cm de haut.
Et quant à la reprise rapide du travail pour les françaises après une maternité... déjà en 1962 😲ma mère travaillait et à repris le travail 8 mois après. Ma soeur, mes cousines, les femmes de mes frères et cousin n'ont pas attendu pour retourner au travail. Leur motivation était économique, bien sur, mais sociale aussi. Le schéma de la "femme à la maison" n'est plus d'actualité pour la grande majorité des françaises depuis longtemps. Ouf !
Ceci est dû particulièrement aux professionels de la petite enfance, crèches et nourisses qui garantissent la sécurité des enfants. Les parents sont très confiants dans ces institutions.
I totally agree. No high heels (stilettos). Too badass. On the other hand, many small leather shoes, wide heels and 2/3 cm high.
And as for the rapid resumption of work for the French after maternity ... already in 1962, my mother was working and returned to work 8 months later. My sister, my cousins, my brothers' and cousin's wives did not wait to return to work. Their motivation was economic, of course, but also social. The scheme of the 'woman at home' is no longer relevant for the vast majority of French women for a long time. Phew!
This is particularly due to early childhood professionals, nurseries and nurses who guarantee the safety of children. Parents are very confident in these institutions.

Hey congrats! I am American living in Germany and am contemplating obtaining German citizenship. However I don't want to give up my American citizenship...did you have to?
No, there is a convention between France and the USA. So she have a dual citizenship. I don't know about Germany, though.
I don't think that it's a social pressure for women in France to stay thin, I think it's more that the French haven't succumbed to the madness of not acknowledging obesity as a "natural" thing and they realise that it's a health hazard. Extreme political correctness hasn't infiltrated French society yet (thank God!) and so people aren't afraid to point out unhealthy eating habits for what they are.
I completely agree with you that the French don't entertain the idea that obesity could be classified as something to own in the way that we have a rhetoric in the US of accepting your body no matter what the size and shape. However, i disagree that there isn't social pressure to stay slim. It's a more big city thing than smaller towns, but the slim french woman is still really idealised as the "beautiful" body for me. The love of some booty and curves seems to be more a more American thing.
@@UnintentionallyFrenchified I see your point, and for sure, living in a big city will make people more self conscious. But I do think that American culture has exaggerated in the last decade or so, and now blurs the limit between being having curves and being obese. For instance in Europe it's still unheard of for people to consider natural to move around in scooters because their weight limits their ability to move. But the impression I get is that in the US people would get offended if someone would mention that this is an unhealthy lifestyle. I may be wrong of course. I just think that people in Europe don't stay slim as much because they have to but rather because they believe it's healthier. At the end of the day though, what matters is that someone stays happy with his/her choice in the long run.
@@victoriagossani8523 Being rude to a person because of his/her weight, hell, even thinking ill of someone because of that is inexcusable in my book. But sadly it happens in all countries, because toxic people who like to bully others in order to feel superiour exist everywhere. I was thinking more in the advice given by doctors, friends, family because they are concerned about the overweight person's well being in the long run. Or the general guidance that comes from school, media, etc. I'm sorry you had to feel bad because of idiots, the sad thing is the same people who bullied you wouldn't hesitate to bully someone else if they thought he/she is "ugly", "stupid","poor", you get the picture.
I’m inclined to agree. I am American, but I live in France. To me, it seems that it’s actually popular or favorable to be obese in the US. You have songs like “All About That Bass” that criticize so called “skinny bitches”, and you have a star like Lizzo whose whole brand is all about being obese and beautiful. I do agree that you can be obese and beautiful, but being obese in France isn’t something that’s glamorized.
But then why do the French still smoke?

Where I live we get 1 year off of work fully paid when we have a baby.
I have to say I disagree, french women I know are slim wothout caring about what they eat or exercising, the food in France is less fat overall and our way of life is more active, we exercise less but walk and cycle more in our every day life !
They smoke and eat very little. Also walk more. And probably save money on buying food.

My ancestors left France for the New World five hundred years ago (1612). I am French in ancestry and physically while being American of nationality.
