Thanks so much. these radio plays are great.
The actor playing Marlowe has the character down to a T. the direction is perfect, too. the show really feels like the ‘30’s and ‘40’s.
just one thing, with all the times he gets hit on the head, i’m amazed it stills works 😂🌴☀️

I'm obsessed with Raymond Chandler. His way with words made me smile with happiness.

Maybe you are familiar with Ross Macdonald? His style is much like that of Chandler. I like Chandler a bit more, but Macdonald is reasonably close in quality, and he wrote more books.

The great thing about these radio plays are they are easy to listen to when you are driving or in bed at night. very convenient. Thanks.

Love Marlow! Chandler was a master storyteller in this genre.

The story is very good, but the production even better. It has a great aura, particularly appropriate music, and is complicated enough to warrant another listen. One of the best.

I've never read any Marlow stories, just seen the movies. Some good, some less good.. This is better than most movies. Theater of the mind is always better than MGM or Warner Bros.
Voices good. Acting believable. Sound effects good. Music good too.
I'm surprised about the high level of production values.
    Thanks for the experience.
    I'll subscribe.

I just watched The Big Sleep on BBC4 absolutely brilliant Bogart and Bacall were such a presence on screen and the story was sublime, a noir classic which will never to me get dated

Screen writing doesn't always do these things justice. Imagine it as straight dialogue, it loses a lot of his hilarious thoughts and descriptions.

My favorite novelist. Listen to the books if you can find then, sometimes you can on youtube. Most of his 6 major Marlow novels are pretty complex, except for Lady in the Lake I would say. But still I like Lady in the Lake as much as any of them. The abridged version fails though, because it minimized the role of the constable. He is one of the major shining points of that novel.

Chandler really pegged that self centered, virtue signaling hypocrite type 100%. Such a common character today.

Listened to the entire radio broadcast of Phillip Marlowe from the late 40s early 50s and have read the books. For some reason he seems more like an uncaring asshole in these broadcasts. Gerald Mohr had the personality perfect for Marlowe.

    • @jeanettesdaughter
      @jeanettesdaughter ปีที่แล้ว

A compression of the text. Chandler's Marlowe is wise, cheeky, lonely and built to be. Educated, fond of poetry and chess. A shop-worn Galahad. Too much for a radio play.

Yes. Dialogue / atmosphere and characters all excellent.
Unfortunately the plot is ludicrously over complicated and the final scene is even longer than the average Poirot
unmasking the murderer moment. Chandler was very critical
of the English Country House style mystery but his own
plots were just as implausible . !

In that old age, when most people were too mediocre to really change their lives, people ran out into the night, cravenly made it to the corner-store, diner, pub, or similar, and then babbled wild tales about mobsters, muggers & great adventures. Quality-wise, this series' did better than all the #OTR efforts! 🤗
