About Author: Raymond Thornton Chandler (July 23, 1888 - March 26, 1959) was an American-British novelist and screenwriter. In 1932, at the age of forty-four, Chandler became a detective fiction writer after losing his job as an oil company executive during the Great Depression. His first short story, "Blackmailers Don't Shoot", was published in 1933 in Black Mask, a popular pulp magazine. His first novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939. In addition to his short stories, Chandler published seven novels during his lifetime (an eighth, in progress at the time of his death, was completed by Robert B. Parker). All but Playback have been made into motion pictures, some more than once. In the year before his death, he was elected president of the Mystery Writers of America
About the book: The Big Sleep (1939) is a hardboiled crime novel by American-British writer Raymond Chandler, the first to feature the detective Philip Marlowe. It has been adapted for film twice, in 1946 and again in 1978. The story is set in Los Angeles.
The story is noted for its complexity, with characters double-crossing one another and secrets being exposed throughout the narrative. The title is a euphemism for death; the final pages of the book refer to a rumination about "sleeping the big sleep".

These are some grade A voice actors, Thank you for bringing these classic stories back to life.
Listened to this again and it's still a classic tale. Top marks from Scotland 🏴👍
Thanks for listening!
Hi Scotland! Seattle, Washington
Loving the series! Could not have chosen a better actor for Marlowe.
Who are the voice actors?
very thanks for listening, share with your friends and family!
Love Chandler and Dashiel Hammet , audio is so good no need for pictures my imagination provides them ,easy with such good writing and actors.
Thanks!
Raymond Chandler, more than any writer before or since, has captured the poetry and paltriness that are the heart of Los Angeles, his characters move within the shadow of the Hollywood machine-tough, chauffeurs, dames and the wealthy gone bad. Haunting, flawed, and larger than life. Mr. Chandler I am in you seem to get the attention of people.
Listened to this 6 months ago and it's still a great story. Thanks
Thank you so much for posting this audio Bites Biswas. The tale & narration was terrific.
While not the full book, this is a great telling!
The cast was excellent. If that is in fact Toby Stephens, as some in the comments stated, I appreciate him even more!
He's on TH-cam making the recordings

Toby Stephens does one fine Marlowe.
Amazing
Thanks
I enjoy all of these videos, but, one thing they all have in common is that the volume sucks. I'm on an android with ear plugs, really have to concentrate to hear. You can always turn it down, but,you can't turn it up.
If you use a blue tooth radio you can jack up the volume
This is wonderful! Very nice work

Lady in the Lake: people don't talk to me that way.
Hey check your thumbnail. The title is The Big Sleep NOT the big sheep!

Glad you liked it!, keep watching, we have more amazing audiobook comming up. Please subscribe , like and share with your friends and family.
I just came here from the Ray Porter version and its terrible. The guy sounds like the singer from Metallica. If im listening to a detective noir story I want it to sound like the classic accent they used. This is like listening to an old radio program.
@@XDWX woah Ray is that guy 👦
Take it easy...
@@keiththebat1 Hes not even close. Have you ever watched a Humprey Bogart movie? Ray sounds like he isn't even interested. His pacing and tone are way off.

@@BTCAudiobook the website also only has the hour and 26 minute version
Heck, no. Uploader here should _really_ have indicated in the video title that this recording is an audio drama production with full cast, music, and sound effects ... not the full audiobook. (Obviously nobody could never read the book in only ninety minutes; it's nearly 300 pages.)
@@BTCAudiobook You failed to answer the question.
The Big "Sheep"? Please correct that.
surely i will
Almost impossible story to follow
The big sheep?
As a radio dramatisation it's not strictly true to call it a full length audiobook, as people may think it contains the full text of the novel, which it doesn't.
Many people like this series with Toby Stephens, but I prefer the earlier BBC dramatisations with Ed Bishop. Nevertheless, this series dramatises a few books that the Ed Bishop series misses.
Toby Stephens American accent
is excruciating . As for Marlowe :
his relentless wise cracking and
Sir Galahad moral rectitude is both
tiresome and unconvincing.
He s obviously Gay . Time he came out of the closet..!
I agree Ed Bishop s the better of the two, although Toby Steven is no slouch in the role.
Audio dramatization, not audiobook.
Did Marlowe get the better of that big sheep?

This is not a good audiobook. It misses many parts of the plot, such as the initial visit to Geiger’s book store.

First, it's not actually an audiobook (even though the video title here uses the words 'full audiobook' for some reason), it's an audio drama -- with cast and music and sound effects. Second, these kinds of productions have to condense things a lot to keep the running time at about ninety minutes. Scenes are jettisoned for time.
@@eduardo_corrochio Yeah.
I’d really like an audiobook of the actual text, not some condensed thing.
@@johnpurssey6880 Oh yeah the final film is an abomination, ruined by the Warner brothers interference. Out there is the original film that Hawks shot about 18 months before and it’s a lot closer to the novel. The final cut that Sam Warner forced upon Hawks has scenes filmed 18 months later when both Bacall & Bogey are noticeably older. And it entirely excises the scene with the missing Irishman’s wife. It’s a shame as the original cut is a bonafide classic. But I suppose that the final cut made more money during the mania of “bogey & bacall”…
