Dude this is EXCELLENT. I had no idea there were more Marlowe novels! I read the Big Sleep years ago when I rented it from the LA Public Library. I loved it so much! Now I'm stuck between listening to the rest of these novels, or finding the books and reading them...
I grew up in Venice Beach many happy years reading all the Horse Books in the Venice library then all the sci Fi books then graduated to checking out 10 big sci Fi books every week from Santa Monica Library and consuming them at night while attending Notre Dame Academy
What a great book. That line near the end about writing a good poem and losing it has to be one of the best in all of detective fiction. When I was in my twenties I used to play the matches of the past chess masters by myself. After a while I could play my friend even who used to beat me all the time, and could beat my brother all the time who I used to play even. Later in life I bought a better double-weighted chess set and displayed it, but it just sat there. Now, it sits boxed on a shelf. The two chess books I used to play from sit in my library, lending me a certain appearance of erudition, but I don't have it in me anymore.
@@umac76 , I am older now . I had to have two shoulder surgeries. But I've read hundreds of books . Now for the life of me cannot keep my mind on one . I have lots of books I have not read . I'm struggling with getting rid of them . Like you I see them in my book shelf , have them stashed in my closet, under my bed . But I just can't read them , I listen to these audio books . I am thankful for that . I think the surgeries did something to me. I guess one day I will finish getting rid of my books . Heck lol maybe just older age . I hope one day you play chess again . I used to play as a kid a little by no means good at it .
@@Sherrisewingroom I'm kind of in the same boat. I've had a couple of tragedies in my life that kind of knocked the sense out of me. For about ten years I had no interest in reading anymore, little interest in anything really. Now that I want to read my eyes are giving me trouble, they just can't get my prescriptions right. So I listen to audiobooks and take tremendous pleasure from them.

Toby Stephens as Marlowe? He's no Bogart, but he kills it... (when he keeps the accent on the West coast.) Great job on the serial, team. Love 'em all.
Absolutely first rate radio version of this iconic film noir classic. These work superbly well as they were written by the best crime writers the US had in the 1940’s. Sheer brilliance and never bettered
This came up in my feed tonight, took a chance & damn glad I did! I ❤this what an excellent way to drift off. Thank you you've impressed another subscribers immensely!
Watched the movie with George Montgomery the other day. Great movie, but I prefer this medium. Toby Stephens did a remarkable job on every one of these! Would really enjoy seeing it on a screen. JJ -South Alabama

When I was a youngster I saw the movie "The Brasher Babloon" starring George Montgomery (Dinah Shore's husband). It, for reasons I am uncertain about, has remained in my memory. I was very young, so it was probably the style of acting, photography, direction... things that make movies so exciting. I hope I'll enjoy this production. I'll report at the end of the video.
Excellent production quality. I'm still not sure about why I remember the George Montgomery movie. Probably the complex plot. I probably never quite figured it out. And George Montgomery's acting. It's hard to overdo Philip Marlow. Thanks for the video. It must take quite a lot of planning and effort to pull together so many aspects of the production... script, music, sound effects, casting for voices as well as acting ability. I expect that from a radio program, but an independent site like this...I'm VERY impressed. Good work!!!
This BBC radio series (of all 7 Chandler novels) is even more amazing when you learn that ALL the actors were Brits. Marlowe was played by Toby Stephens, son of dame Maggie smith, the dowager countess on Downton Abbey. Merle was Jessica Raine, star of Call the Midwife. Oh, and the nasty Mrs. Murdoch was Judy Parfitt, the demented but saintly sister Monica on Midwife - amazing acting.
@@2msvalkyrie529- He keeps it together on Lady in the Lake, but your right... He tends to wanders the country. That said, I think his voice and overall tone really carries the Marlowe character well... ... And that's saying something when you have to stand in Bogart's shadow.
I saw the movie when I eleven, I cried the hole way through, It was marvelous. Raymond chandler, people don't no, was Irish. In a of his stories, there was an somebody, mostly a cop. And like most Irish, he like to drink. At the end, he drank himself to death, when the love of his like, his wife, died.
I think it lacks a certain something in the over all tone. If I could change one thing it would be to have the narration in the past tense, as it is in the books, instead of present tense.
