  • Playback Philip Marlowe - Raymond Chandler Mystery Free Full Length Audiobook Dramatized Radio Show
About Author: Raymond Thornton Chandler (July 23, 1888 - March 26, 1959) was an American-British novelist and screenwriter. In 1932, at the age of forty-four, Chandler became a detective fiction writer after losing his job as an oil company executive during the Great Depression. His first short story, "Blackmailers Don't Shoot", was published in 1933 in Black Mask, a popular pulp magazine. His first novel, The Big Sleep, was published in 1939. In addition to his short stories, Chandler published seven novels during his lifetime (an eighth, in progress at the time of his death, was completed by Robert B. Parker). All but Playback have been made into motion pictures, some more than once. In the year before his death, he was elected president of the Mystery Writers of America
About the book: Playback is a novel by American-British writer Raymond Chandler featuring the private detective Philip Marlowe. It was first published in Britain in July 1958; the US edition followed in October that year. Chandler died the following year; Playback is his last completed novel.
On 8 January 1947 Universal announced they had bought a story from Raymond Chandler called Playback. Joseph Sistrom was assigned to produce the film and it was intended Chandler would write the script.[1] The novel was reworked by Chandler from the screenplay. The script, thought by some to be superior to the novel (generally considered to be the weakest of the seven Marlowe novels, perhaps because of its less complex plot and pat resolution), was published posthumously.
Playback is the only Marlowe novel completed by Chandler that is set somewhere other than Los Angeles. The setting is the town of Esmeralda, a fictional name for La Jolla, where Chandler lived his last few years. Poodle Springs, which Chandler did not finish, is set in Palm Springs, California.
"Playback" by Raymond Chandler is a classic detective novel featuring the iconic private investigator Philip Marlowe. Set in the noir atmosphere of 1950s Los Angeles, Marlowe is hired to tail a mysterious woman named Betty Mayfield. As he delves deeper, he finds himself entangled in a web of deceit, danger, and intrigue. The story takes unexpected twists and turns, revealing dark secrets and exposing the underbelly of the city. Marlowe's wit, sharp observations, and determination lead him through a series of encounters with shady characters, ultimately uncovering a complex conspiracy that threatens to consume them all.

Excellent for getting to sleep and then when awakening in the middle of the night picking up the strands again - the ending I listen to just before getting out of bed in the morning.

Kudos to the vocal talent. This was an underappreciated genre of literature. Thanx to the provider for making this available. The actors deserve the majority of the accolades. Tbt

And this is, wherein Toby Stephens (narrator) really convinces & entertains, so does the rest of the cast. Atmospheric, believable, and without any erratic bitching about drux or unresolved LGBTQ issues. 🤗

This series is so well produced - the acting and characters work very well, especially the guy playing Marlowe. the direction includes the actors’ movements and sounds (like inhaling a cigarette), the noises off are brilliant. the scripts capture the nuances of the books. i’ve listened to three now, hope there’s more.
Thank you so much. have a great summer :) 🌷🌱

Now that was a great story on Philip Marlowe. He keeps his head even near death, pretty lying women, and other PIs. Can't get any cooler than than that. An old school Joe Mannix if Ive ever seen one!

I still miss Ed bishop as marlowe. He could have done it too. They just didnt record him doing playback. They did the story the long goodbye, 1978, this came out 20 years before in 1958. So thats the question im trying to figure out. Why didnt they do this one with ed bishop?

    • @pakde8002

@@bulletsunderpressure I'm assuming by "they", you refer to the motion picture industry since Playback was the only Chandler novel not adapted for film. This recording was made in 2011 for radio by the BBC (icydk).

And the plot a lot less convoluted
than some of his others . ( ie it actually made sense ! )
