No one is on steroids that’s how South African guys that play rugby are if you saw the under 20 of the springboks you’d be shocked . We just built different in South Africa
In South africa we call that No 4 guy the " Enforcer ," you definetly dont want to mess with him. He is a gentle giant, but he can also be a beast. Eben Etzebeth.
Eben Etsebeth was in my Highschool Tygerberg in Parow near Cape Town in South Africa 🇿🇦 He finished Highschool 20 years after I was there. I finished in same Highschool Tygerberg in 1990. EBEN Finnished there in 2010.
To be honest, approx 99% of all rubgy players at school, club and international level from all rugby playing countries are as fearless and tough.....big respect to all rugby players
It’s international test rugby. If they throw a punch they get sent off the field and then your country looses the match. So sadly a punch isn’t worth it. No.4 is the great Eben Etzebeth. He is a clean player who pushes to the boundary but never beyond. Other teams bait him repeatedly because he is the most valuable player on the field bar none. He comes from a family of rugby players, rumour has it back in the day his uncles used to warm up on a Friday night before Saturday games by having fights on local bars. We love them over here!
Do not distort or prostitute your idea of how this beautiful game is played...there are no gangbangers or chopheads, ...these are proper sportsmen, playing for the love of the game....
5:32 That's Eben Etzebeth he's 270lbs, 6'8". Before him there was Bakkies "The Enforcer" Botha, he was more brutal than him. In fact he slapped dudes at will. 😂 You should react to "Bakkies Botha Rugby Tribute"
Bakkies was more brutal because it was a different age of rugby, brotha. Coming from a South African. Bakkies would get banned in every game he played if he he played like that today.
No 4 is Eben Etzebeth and he is a really good player and it's usually him just taking whatever comes his way first. Most players do that but most players don't like going up against him. He is a Springbok player and so is little Faf (the blonde one). Size does not matter. The scrappy looking dudes are just as vicious when called upon. It is not allowed but certainly a part of the game. No steroids necessary. Have you been to South Africa? Some guys are just built different here. Eben can bench press 385 pounds and legend has it he bench pressed a cow before. His dumbbells had to be custom made. It is a combination of how they are raised, not having any fear and man do they have heart. And if you think our South African boys are tough, you should see our women! 😅😉
In rugby, the team bond is huge. If you break discipline and throw a punch, you could be out for several games, letting your brothers down in the process. Still, there is the occasional fistfight, and those are brutal
number 4 is Eben Etzebeth. He is known as a bar brawler but he just stands up for his players. He was a captain at one stage. You cant swing in rugby as you get big bans and fines.
Eben etzebeth is a beast... Definitely one of the greats in this Gen... Probably gonna be one of the few GOATs when he retires... Apart from him always fighting, like you saw, he fills he's position well
The game is far more controlled than what you are seeing. There are consequences for rough play and unnecessary violence. Sometimes the violence is necessary LOL.
Throwing a punch means you are immediately sent off. That is off the field for the rest of the game and your team will have to play the remainder of the game with one player less. In the old days mass fights were a regular occurrence, but those days are gone. So punching is very very much less these days.
The reason no punches are thrown is because that will get you sent off. If can cause serious injury. But roughhousing is semi allowed/tolerated. But honesty getting shook around by a guy that bicep curls the weight of an average human is not a fun experience :D Getting punched by that kind of strength will break bones. Very strict about that. Although it has happened. Rugby is just one of those sports where you have to start playing and training at the age of 6 when you start school otherwise your body will not develop to endure the hits. Very fun though. I suck at it, but still enjoy the game. Best thing about rugby is that you try to kill each other on the field, but after the game you all party together like you've been best friends since birth. That is the spirit of the sport
Little brief description of rugby for those who dont know. The goal of rugby is get over the try-line where you have to physically place the ball on the ground which is then followed up by a place kick (conversion), like your American Football. The other way to get points is if the opponent violates any rules that warrant a 'penalty', where we can go for another 'place kick' (or a scrum or lineout kick) which awards 3 points as opposed to a try which is 5, followed up the conversion attempt, awarding 2 points. Tries and conversion go hand in hand but you can miss the latter, only resulting in a 5 point gain, awarded from a try and not a total of 7. Basic Info: 1. Pass the ball straight or backwards - forward is well forward and not allowed. 2. Can kick the ball from hand to gain yards into enemy territory which is a gamble as you will either lose possession or reclaim it from the kick - this is used when you cant get through a defensive line or their line and or fullback as pushed up leaving space for a kick and run to retake and make ground. 3. That thing of the players being bent down, bound together, is a 'scrum', awarded from foul play, it gives the attackers a chance to execute a set piece or move, very much like in American Football, its like your hucks, just not for every single play as only arises from foul play. The opponents can however overpower the attackers scrum and push them backwards to gain the ball back using their feet. A scrum is used to open the playing field up as less players are roaming or to gain yards close to the try-line or to result in a penalty from applying too much pressure in the initial hit, causing the opponents to collapse the scrum for example which is not allowed. 4. When players are tackled, the ball carrier needs to release the ball back into play once on the ground (why you see many of them stretch their arms out to place the ball back on their side to be picked up), and this is where the opponents pile in as they are going to try rip the ball out of your hands (theres more to it but thats the basic principle), which will result in you either giving it away or holding onto it (which is a penalty as you must not stop the ball from being played in essence), this is why the teammates pile in once someone is tackled to 'clear' and prevent the opponents from getting over the ball and causing a penalty. Teammates clearing these 'rucks' also allows the ball to become readily available for faster movement and plays. 5. When the ball is kicked out (there are other things like where the kick took place, did it bounce beforehand but thats for another time), this is a 'line-out' where more set moves are executed, like your hucks, so players try move around the line-out to confuse the opponents as the thrower is throwing for a pre-determined distance and height depending on what 'move' they are doing and this is why the opponents try mimic their movement so they can get their jumpers at the same location in the line so they can jump with the attackers to try contest the throw. 6. Player jersey numbers from 1-8 are the 'forwards', these are usually the bigger guys that participate in scrums, ruck clearing, lineouts and general defensive-line bruising, think of them are your 'Guards' in football. Then the numbers 9-15 are the 'backs', think of these are your 'Receivers'. 7. One last way to get points, is by going for drop goals which awards 3 points. This is where you can drop the ball and upon the bounce, follow with a kick and must go in-between the up rights. Perfect example of this for me anyways, would be the retired English legend Jonny Wilkinson. I think that's the general idea of rugby without diving into the specifics of each areas and the rules. LETS GO BOKKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE #RWC23
That no4 are looking out for all his team mates and let me tell you he is a gentle giant. One of the best persons you can have as a friend, but definitely not as your enemy.
You don’t see many punches because players know they will get banned for a few games if they do. It’s why they mostly just push each other around. There are videos where you see rugby players throwing punches though, check them out.

they get disciplinary hearings and the risk of them not being play for a year or two is a risk thats why punches are risky but the jersey grabbing and throwing a mf is legal
